Charles L. Roy Armstrong

BONAPARTE - Charles L. Roy Armstrong, 71, of Bonaparte died at 1:38 p.m. Monday, April 20, 2009, in Van Buren County Hospital, Keosauqua.
He was born
on Feb. 19, 1938, in Des Moines, the son of Charles and Inez Armstrong.
He married
Rose James on June 21, 1967, in Fort Madison. She survives.
Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Schmitz-Lynk Funeral Home and Crematory, Farmington, with the Rev. Larry Wallingford officiating.
Visitation is after 10 a.m. Friday at the funeral home, where the family will meet with friends from 12:00 p.m. until the time of service.
Memorials may be made to the PAWS Animal Shelter.
John W. 'Jack' Cronin Jr.
Jan. 24, 1922 - April 20, 2009
John W. 'Jack' Cronin Jr., 87, of Keokuk died at 6:15 p.m. Monday, April 20, 2009, in Keokuk Area Hospital.
He was born
at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 24, 1922, in St. Joseph Hospital, Keokuk, the son of John William and Mayme Louise Thompson Cronin.
He was a bill collector for James Cameron and Sons. With the help of Henry Landman, he platted what is now the original and middle Keokuk Catholic Cemetery with a sheet for each lot and information on each known remains. Later all of this was lost in a fire at the city. Jack managed Cronin Coal Company followed by an almost perfect job as math teacher and basketball coach at St. Peter/Cardinal Stritch High School from 1952 to 1968. He was then a math teacher at Ernest Righetti High School in Santa Maria, Calif., from 1968 to 1984.
He married
MarScine Clara Thompson Burch on May 8, 1970, in Clark County, Nev. They renewed their vows on May 8, 2003, at All Saints Catholic Church, Keokuk. She survives.
He was a member of All Saints Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, VFW Post 3508 and American Legion Post 41. He had been a member of the Rotary Club for 33 years, with more than 30 years of perfect attendance. He played snare drum in St. Vincents/St. Peter Regina Band, Keokuk Municipal Band, Boy Scout Drum and Bugle Corps and McNamaras Band.
Additional survivors include: stepsons, Steve Burch and his wife, Cherie, of Plainfield, Ill., and Christopher Burch and his wife, Darline, of Worthington, Ohio; five step-grandchildren; three stepgreat-grandchildren; a nephew, Dr. John V. Doering; and two nieces, Kathleen Whitley and her husband, William, and Mary V. Matenear and her husband, Mark.
He also was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Mary Ann Doering and her husband, Robert.
Jack appreciated his educational opportunities, including St. Vincents Grade School and St. Peters High School, the Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent DePaul, Msgr. Martin OConnell and St. Ambrose College where he earned a bachelors degree, Dr. Francis Reganand and St. Louis University where he received his masters degree and The National Science Foundation.
In spite of my many faults, God was great to me, Jack was quoted as saying. He gave me a great mother, father and sister and wonderful friends both in Keokuk and California. The best thing He gave to me was my wife MarScine. During World War II, he put me on a destroyer that worked with Navy TF 38 (Halsey) and TF 58 (Mitchner) but did not take any Japanese lead.
A mass of Christian burial service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at All Saints Catholic Church, with the Rev. Paul Connolly officiating.
Burial will be in Keokuk National Cemetery, with full military honors.
Visitation is after 4 p.m. today at Greave's Mortuary, Keokuk, with family meeting friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. A Christian vigil service is at 7 p.m.
Memorials may be made to All Saints Catholic Church or First Lutheran Church.
Tonya Sue Adkins
Feb. 3, 1950 - April 25, 2009
Tonya Sue Adkins, 59, of Keokuk died Saturday, April 25, 2009, at her home.
She was born
on Feb. 3, 1950, in Fort Madison, the daughter of Johnnie Lee Adkins Sr. and Gladys Little Adkins.
She married
Cecil Barnes in 1969. They later divorced.
She grew up in Montrose and graduated from Central Lee High School, Donnellson, with the Class of 1968.
She moved to Keokuk in 1995.
She had been employed at the Ordnance Plant in Middletown, Fruehauf in Fort Madison and Sasco in St. Louis.
She enjoyed going to garage sales, antiquing and collecting cobalt blue dishes. She loved her family and especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.
Survivors include: two daughters, Tera Hart and her husband, Jason, of Fort Madison and Erica Hawkins and her husband, Stacey, of Keokuk; her father, Johnnie Lee Adkins Sr. of Montrose; three brothers, Randall McCarty and his wife, Susan, of Montrose, David Adkins and his wife, Mary, of Donnellson and Johnnie Lee Adkins Jr. and his wife, Cindy, of Donnellson; seven grandchildren, Cody Barnes of Donnellson, Carissa and Carey Kay and Tiffanee Hart, all of Fort Madison, and Shea, Gage and Mercedes Hawkins, all of Keokuk.
She was preceded in death by her mother and grandparents.
Services will be at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at Vigen Memorial Home, Keokuk, with Fr. Paul Connolly officiating.
Burial will be in the Montrose Cemetery.
Visitation is after 4 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, with family meeting friends from 6 to 8 p.m.
Memorials may be made to the family.
Thelma D. Blakely

Thelma D. Blakely, 74, of Keokuk died Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2008, in Keokuk Area Hospital.
She was born
on May 2, 1934, in Lewis County, Mo., the daughter of Homer George and Nada Fay Tompkins Lay.
She married
Kenneth Albert Blakely on May 30, 1952, in Hannibal, Mo. He preceded her in death on Feb. 4, 1996.
A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Lewistown Cemetery, Lewistown, Mo.
Mark Edward Adams
Mark Edward Adams, 48, of Charlotte, North Carolina, and formerly of Keokuk, died Saturday, June 15, 2002 at his home.
He was born
May 30, 1954, the son of C.E. and Joy Dose Adams. He graduated from Keokuk High School in 1972. During school he worked at the Elks Fairview Golf Course. After graduation, he attended Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids and received a degree in horticulture. He worked as a golf course greens keeper in Ft. Madison, Iowa, and then in Carthage, Illinois before starting his own landscape business in Keokuk. He then moved to the Charlotte, North Carolina area in 1987.
He was first married
to Jackie Kraus and they had two children, Melanie Adams and her companion, Kevin Fleck, of Greenville, South Carolina and Brian Adams who is stationed in Groton, Connecticut with the United States Navy. He later married
Cindy Hutcherson and they had one daughter, Lauren Adams. He was recently married
to Sharon McGraw of Chicago, Illinois. She survives and they resided together in the Lake Norman area where he was engaged in landscape construction.
Other survivors include his parents, C.E. and Joy Dose Adams of Keokuk, Iowa; sister, Lisa Adams Carel and her husband, Robin, of Hamilton, Illinois; mieces, nephews, cousin, aunts, and uncles, and many good friends.
He enjoyed boating, was a Nascar fan, and liked taking his friends to the racetrack, and entertaining his friends and family in his home.
His body was cremated.
A memorial service was held Wednesday, June 19, 2002 at the Hills Chapel United Methodist Church near Lake Norman, North Carolina. A service was held in Keokuk Saturday, June 22, 2002 at Trinity United Methodist Church with Rev. Paul Pennington officiating.

Dorrys Anderson
Dorrys E. Anderson, 83, formerly of Keokuk, died Friday September 20, 2002, in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
She was born
the daughter of Harry and Clara Merrick. She married
Raymond Anderson of Keokuk in 1946. He preceded her in death in 1995.
She is survived by her son, John Anderson, and three grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by three siblings; Ivan, Ruth, David and Jack.
She worked for the Western Union in Keokuk and Kansas City during World War II. Mrs. Anderson and her husband moved to Minneapolis, retired to Phoenix in 1980, and moved to Santa Fe in 1991.
Graveside services will be held at 1:30 P.M. Friday, October 18, at Keokuk National Cemetery in Keokuk, Iowa, with Pastor Don Rothweiler officiating.
The family requests no flowers.
Sylvia I. Batley
Sylvia Irene Batley, 95, of 20 Village Circle, Keokuk, died Wednesday, October 09, 2002 at 1:45 A.M. at Keokuk Area Hospital in Keokuk, Iowa.
Sylvia Batley was born
on August 26, 1907 in Easton, Missouri. She was the daughter of Frank and Nellie Jane Bennett Nichols. She married
Charles L. Kennedy. She later married
Raymond O. Batley on November 17, 1945 in Keokuk, Iowa. He preceded her in death on March 21, 1973. She had live in Keokuk for most of her life and had been employed in production at Benner's Grocery and the Keokuk Canning Company. She was a former member of St. Paul United Church of Christ, Ladies of the Eagles, and Ladies of the Moose.
Survivors include a daughter, Alice Harman and her husband, Howard, of Keokuk, Iowa; three granddaughters, JoAnn Gillman of Bettendorf, Iowa, Sharon Sheffler of Golden, Colorado, and Becky Sowers and her husband, Mark, of Warsaw, Illinois; one grandson, Mark Kennedy, serving in the U.S. Marines; one sister, Viola Wilson and her husband, Oscar, of Spencer, Iowa; and many nieces, nephews, and great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Raymond; a son, Charles; a stepson, Gerald; three sisters; and two brothers.
Services were Friday, October 11, 2002 at DeJong's Funeral Home in Keokuk with Reverend Fred Lohman officiating. Burial was in Sunset Memorial Park in Keokuk.

Edwinna Beaty
Edwinna Beaty, 88, of Ft. Madison, Iowa, died Friday, June 14, 2002, at University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City, Iowa.
She was born
November 9, 1914 in Woodward, Iowa, the daughter of Jack and Martha Tomey Ramsey. She married
Ellery Beaty on January 21, 1943. He preceded her in death on May 28, 1987. She had lived in the Montrose area since 1943 and the last three years in Ft. Madison. She had worked at Sullivan-Auwerda in Keokuk. She was a member of Montrose United Methodist Church.
She is survived by two daughters, Katy Carlson and her husband, Gary, of Iowa City, Iowa and Phyllis Schulte of Keokuk, Iowa; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and a son, John Beaty.
Graveside services were held Monday, June 17, 2002, at Oakland Cemetery in Keokuk.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
Dorothy Collier Berry
Dorothy Annamay Collier Berry, 82, of Ft. Madison, Iowa died Monday, August 5, 2002 at the Ft. Madison Health Center in Ft. Madison.
Dorothy Berry was born
on November 24, 1919 in Keokuk, Iowa. She was the daughter of William Jefferson and Lanieury Leah Porter Collier. She married
John Arthur Berry on September 3, 1938. He preceded her in death in May 2002. She had been a lifelong resident of the Ft. Madison-Keokuk area and was a homemaker. She attended the First Christian Church. She loved doing crossword puzzles, knitting, crocheting, and she enjoyed the outdoors. She loved the Mississippi River.
Survivors include three children, John Arthur 'Jack' Berry and his wife, Karen, of Salem, Iowa, Michael David Berry of Keokuk, Iowa and Dorothy 'Dotti' Daskalos and her husband, Nick, of Hamilton, Illinois; one brother, James 'Larry' Collier of Harbour Heights, Florida; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one son, Theodore 'Ted' Berry; two brothers, William F. 'Bud' Collier and Robert Collier; and three sisters, Evelyn Collier Dettmer, LaVera Collier Sackman, and Nellie Blanche 'Mickey' Hall.
Services were held Thursday, August 8, 2002 at DeJong's Funeral Home in Keokuk with Reverend John Simpson officiating. Burial was in Oakland Cemetery in Keokuk.

Patsy Best
Patsy 'Pat' Stark Best, 68, of Keokuk, Iowa, died Sunday, January 19, 2003 at 10:31 A.M. at the University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City, Iowa.
Patsy Best was born
on December 7, 1934 in Centertown, Kentucky. She was the daughter of John and Lily Davis Stark. She married
Charles Best on June 17, 1963 in Keokuk. He survives. She had lived in Keokuk for the past fifty-two years and was a homemaker. She enjoyed fishing, camping, cooking, and taking care of her grandchildren. She loved to play cards and staying up late to watch television. She was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include her husband, Charles 'Lonnie' Best, of Keokuk, Iowa; one daughter, Audrey Burgess, of Keokuk, Iowa; five sons, Daniel Stark and his wife, Kathy, of Keokuk, Gregory 'Buzz' Stark and his wife, Sheila, of Keokuk, Terry Best and his wife, Brenda, of Keokuk, Charles 'Lonnie Jr.' Best of Keokuk, and Dennis Best of Keokuk; nine brothers and sisters, John 'Buster' Stark of Keokuk, Betty Lou Knight of Elvaston, Illinois, Francis Stark of Winona, Minnesota, Norma Steffensmeier of Keokuk, Perry Vermeesch of Keokuk, Earl Vermeesch of Keokuk, Gale Barrones of Bonaparte, Iowa, Zenia Vermeesch of Keokuk, and Mary Burdess of Redfield, Arkansas; sixteen grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her stepfather; three sisters; and one brother.
Services were Friday, January 24, 2003 at DeJong's Funeral Home in Keokuk with Reverend William Mitchell officiating. Burial was in Oakland Cemetery in Keokuk.
