Jerry Joan Kerr
April 27, 1932 - April 11, 2009

FARMINGTON - Jerry Joan Kerr, 76, of Farmington died at 9:25 a.m. Saturday, April 11, 2009, after an 11-year battle with cancer.

She was born icon on April 27, 1932, in Fort Madison, the daughter of Albert and Louella Davidson.

She married icon Hillis Edward Kerr on June 10, 1951, in Primrose. He survives.

Additional survivors include: a daughter, Sandra (David) Boley of rural Hillsboro; two sons, Don (Stephanie) Kerr of Richland, Ky., and Jeffery (Sandra) Kerr of Rolla, Mo.; nine grandchildren, Brian (Susan) Boley of Roy, Utah, Rick (Heather) Boley of rural Hillsboro, Christopher Boley of rural Hillsboro, Melanie (Brad) Kerr Fraughiger of Carmel, Ind., Erin (Shawn) Sylvester of Muncie, Ind., Lauren (Johnathan) Capps of Fort Wayne, Ind., Jennifer (Val) Leppert of Macon, Ga., Ryan Kerr of Farmington and Ashley Kerr of Rolla; 12 great-grandchildren, Justin and Mason of Roy, Jaelyn and Kaedyn of rural Hillsboro, Savannah, Ella and Hudson of Carmel, Jenna and Lilly of Muncie, Brynlee of Fort Wayne, and Carmine and Kenley of Macon; a sister, Betty Lou Schau of Donnellson and her twin sister, Patty (Paul) Smith of Kansas City, Kan.; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, five sisters and three brothers.

Joan was a dedicated wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was an active member of the United Methodist Church, where she often volunteered and had served as president. She also served on the church board, was a Sunday School teacher and a lay speaker. She helped start the meals at the Senior Citizens Center and also helped start funds for the citys Christmas decorations. She and her family served as a host family for the AFS program in 1976.

She will be remembered for her beautiful smile, positive attitude and caring for those in need. She will be remembered always looking after others and lending a helping hand. She absolutely loved the coming of spring as she worked in her flower beds and fed the birds of beautiful Iowa. She had a gentle kindness about her, always seeing the good in everyone and everything.

Friends may call after noon Tuesday at Schmitz-Lynk Funeral Home and Crematory, Farmington, where the family will meet with friends from 6 to 8 p.m.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Farmington United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Paul Rekward officiating.

Burial will be in the Primrose Cemetery near Primrose.

A memorial has been established for the Farmington United Methodist Church.

Allen Floyd Miller
Oct. 6, 1933 - April 14, 2009

Allen Floyd Miller, 75, of Keokuk died Tuesday, April 14, 2009, at his home.

He was born icon on Oct. 6, 1933, in Brainerd, Minn., the son of Floyd Arthur and Edith Marie Larson Miller.

He was united in marriage to Janette Arlene Pawson on June 28, 1955, in Inglewood, Calif. She survives.

Additional survivors include: a daughter, Vicki Hart of Burlington; two sons, Dale Miller and his wife, Konnie, of Howard Lake, Minn., and Timothy Miller and his wife, Julie, of Santa Ana, Calif.; seven grandchildren, Melynda Clute and her husband, Raymond, of Burlington, Will Hart and his wife, Mandy, of Gravette, Ark., Jill Miller and her fiancé, Andy Massengill, of Superior, Wis., Alli Balts and her husband, Derek, of Hopkins, Minn., and Matt Miller, Mikey Miller and J.T. Miller, all of Santa Ana; two great-grandchildren; eight foster children; and a sister-in-law, Pat VanVerst of Springtown, Texas.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his mother and father-in-law, Lucy and Otha Adams; and a brother in infancy.

He graduated from the Buffalo, Minn., High School with the Class of 1952. He graduated from the Northrup Aeronautical Institute in 1954.

He was a veteran of the United Sates Army and served as a helicopter crew chief for the 521st Engineer Corp. He had been employed with TransWorld Airlines as an aircraft and powerplant mechanic for 40 years, retiring in 1991.

He was a member of Bel Air Baptist Church in Keokuk and the Community Bible Study group.

He also was a member of the IAM Local 1111 union.

Allen was committed to furthering Christian broadcasting and was instrumental in getting the radio station KMDY on the air. He also enjoyed traveling.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Vigen Memorial Home, Keokuk, with Pastor Mike McMillen officiating.

Burial with military rites will be in Keokuk National Cemetery.

Visitation is after 1 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, with family meeting friends from 6 to 8 p.m.

Memorials may be made to KMDY Good News Radio.

Frederick Robert Dean Mortimer III
Jan. 28, 2009 - April 13, 2009

Frederick Robert Dean Mortimer III, 10 1/2 weeks old, of Keokuk died early Monday morning, April 13, 2009, at his home.

Robbie was born icon on Jan. 28, 2009, in Keokuk Area Hospital, the son of Frederick Robert Dean Mortimer Jr. and Jamie Rash Mortimer.

He is survived by his parents of Keokuk; two sisters, RayLyn and KayLyn Mortimer, both of Keokuk; paternal grandparents, Frederick Robert Dean Mortimer and Bonnie Mortimer of Keokuk; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at DeJong's Funeral Home, Keokuk, with Pastor Randy Ewart officiating.

Burial will be in Babyland in Oakland Cemetery, Keokuk.

Visitation is from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made in the name of Frederick Robert Dean Mortimer III.

Velva Marlene Schmitt
July 19, 1946 - April 11, 2009

DES MOINES - Velva Marlene Schmitt, 62, of Des Moines died early Saturday, April 11, 2009, at her home.

She was born icon on July 19, 1946, in Keokuk, the daughter of Virgil A. and Velva M. LeMaster Johnson.

She married icon James L. Irvin Jr. and then Carl Schmitt in 1976. He preceded her in death on Feb. 25, 2009.

She lived in Burlington before moving to Des Moines seven years ago.

She was a member of First Christian Church in Keokuk.

Survivors include: her mother, Velva Johnson; three children, Patsy Brewer and her husband, Rick, of Des Moines, and Merle Irvin and Darrell Irvin, both of Des Moines; a stepdaughter, Carol Vinson of Keokuk; a stepson, Jason Schmitt and his wife, Caroline, of Keokuk; two grandchildren, Katrina Irvin and Gabriella Brewer; stepgrandchildren, Danielle and Nathan Vinson and Matt, Jacob, Joshua and Allison Schmitt; and two great-grandchildren, Brionna Dent Chloe Vinson.

She also was preceded in death by her father and a brother, Gene Johnson.

Services will at 11 a.m. Saturday at DeJong's Funeral Home, Keokuk, with the Rev. William Mitchell officiating.

Private burial will be in Keokuk National Cemetery at a later date.

Visitation is from 10 a.m. until time of service Saturday at the funeral home, with family meeting friends during that time.

Memorials may be made in memory of Marlene.

Jeanette Jeane White

ANACOCO, La. - Jeanette Jeane White, 66, of Anacoco, La., died Tuesday, April 14, 2009, at Lake Charles Memorial Hospital.

She was born icon in Leesville, La., and lived most of her life in Vernon Parish. She was a beautician by trade. She spent most of her life as a homemaker.

She survived by her husband of 50 years and seven months, James V. White of Anacoco.

Additional survivors include: two sons, Jimmy White and his wife, Kandie, of Keokuk and Michael White and his wife, Amanda, of Burr Ferry, La.; a daughter, Cynthia White and her companion, Johnny Parks, of Leesville; four brothers, Malcom Jeane of Burr Ferry, Milford Jeane of Burr Ferry, Jerald Jeane of Leesville and Lee Bull Jeane of Burry Ferry; five sisters, Lilian McKee of Pickering, La., Marie Kay of Leesville, Norma Cryer of Merryville, La., Faye West of Leesville and Margie Pace of Waxahachie, Texas; and seven grandchildren who were the light of her life, Jarred White of Baton Rouge, La., Whitney Wagaman and her husband, Corey, of Cedar Rapids, Megan White of Arlington, Tenn., and Krystal White, Rachel White, Levi Jeane and Teegan White, all of Burr Ferry.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Wilburn and Lola Jeane, and brothers Clyde Jeane and Jack Jeane.

Services were scheduled at 3 p.m. today at Labby Memorial Funeral Home Chapel, Leesville, with Dean Sebourn, Ricky Kay and Andy Addison officiating.

Burial will follow in the Burr Ferry Cemetery, Burr Ferry.

Visitation was held Thursday evening until the time of services today at the funeral home.

Labby Memorial Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Eula G. Gibson
March 18, 1912 - April 20, 2009

Eula G. Gibson, 97, of Keokuk died at 3:55 a.m. Monday, April 20, 2009, in Keokuk Area Hospital.

She was born icon on March 18, 1912, in Keokuk, the daughter of Tony G. and Grace Dodson Cramer.

She was a lifelong resident of Keokuk.

She worked doing laundry and helped her son at the Ten Pin.

She married icon John E. Gibson on July 8, 1933, in Kahoka, Mo. He preceded her in death in 1991.

She was a member of the First Christian Church in Keokuk.

Eula loved taking care of her family and she enjoyed her pets and stuffed animals.

Survivors include: three grandchildren, Tammy Blanford and her companion, Terry Allen, of Keokuk; Mike Gibson and his wife, Roseann, all of Keokuk, and Lisa Van Winkle and her husband, Brian, of Moline, Ill.; a daughter-in-law, Pat Samuels; five great-grandchildren, Eric, Tia, Michelle, Michael and Matt; 11 great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She also was preceded in death by her parents; two sons, George and Donald; two brothers; and a sister.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Greave's Mortuary, Keokuk, with the Rev. William Mitchell officiating.

Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park.

Visitation is from 10 a.m. until the time of services Wednesday at Greave's Mortuary.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Friends of Keokuk Animal Services (FOKAS).

Greave's Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

James T. McCarthy Jr.
Oct. 28, 1915 - April 14, 2009

KEY BISCAYNE, Fla. - Keokuk native James T. McCarthy Jr. died Tuesday, April 14, 2009, in Key Biscayne, Fla.

He was born icon on Oct. 28, 1915, the son of Grace and James T. McCarthy.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Betty.

Survivors include: a sister, Patricia Boettcher of Fairborn, Ohio; a brother, Joseph McCarthy, of Jackson, Mich.; five sons, Tom of San Francisco, Calif., Tim of Key Biscayne, Joe of Franconia, N.H., John, of Boise, Idaho, and Peter of North Kingston, R.I.; 10 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

He also was preceded in death by his parents.

A graduate of the University of Iowa College of Law, he moved to the East Coast in 1941, residing in Schenectady and Chappaqua, N.Y., Southport, Conn., West Barnstable, Mass., and Key Biscayne.

He had a 31-year career with General Electric Co., serving for some time as the company's chief tax counsel.

Services and burial were in West Barnstable.

Brenda Lee Pekerol
Nov. 15, 1960 - April 20, 2009

FORT MADISON - Brenda Lee Pekerol, 48, of Fort Madison died at 10 a.m. Monday, April 20, 2009, in Fort Madison Community Hospital.

She was born icon on Nov. 15, 1960, in Iowa City, the daughter of Robert W. Jr. and Zella A. (Bearbower) Kramer.

She married icon Sadi Maurice Pekerol Sr. at Largo, Fla. He preceded her in death.

Her body has been cremated.

Private family services will be held at a later date.

Barr Memorial Chapel, Fort Madison, is in charge of arrangements.
