Merton 'Mert' W. Lien, 67, of Webster, WI formerly of Cedar Rapids died suddenly Sunday, September 21, 2003 at St. Luke's Hospital from complications of Diabetes. A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 P.M. Thursday at Swedberg-Taylor Funeral Home in Webster City, WI. With a time for visiting prior to the service. Local arrangements by Cedar Memorial Funeral Home.
Survivors include his wife Delores and their companion 'Tenner'; sons Gene and his wife Deb of Marion, and Craig and our friend Gail of Phoenix, AZ; six grandchildren, Jennel Lien, Cara and her husband Mike Morrow, Carrin and her husband Jeremy Johnson, Andrea Lien of Cedar Rapids, Vinton and Marion, and Justin Lien and Kasi Jo Lien of Phoenix, AZ; two brothers, Alton Lien of St. Marie, Montana and Darvey Lien of Kittery, Maine; and two sisters, Ardyce Salzal of Darwin, MN and Janice Christenson of Grantsburg, WI.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Hector Lien and two sisters, Opal Hunter and Ilet Benson.
Mert was born July 3, 1936 in Grantsburg, WI the beloved son of Ole and Hannah Torgerson Lien. He married
Delores Wicklund on March 24, 1956 in Pine City, MN.
Mert and his family moved from Wisconsin to Cedar Rapids in February 1966 where he began a 28 year career with Collins Radio until he retired in January 1994. He returned to live at a lakeside home near Webster, WI, in the land he loved. Mert enjoyed family and friends, and the time spent with them. He enjoyed many outdoor activities such as fishing, harvesting wild rice and berries, hunting, ice fishing, gardening and the presence of a variety of wildlife.
The deer he fed and would film through the old chicken coop door, the eagles that roost in the big white pine at the front of the house overlooking Big Yellow Lake that would sound off at sunrise bringing in the new day, the black bear and wild turkey that left signs of their visits, and a large number of other birds and critters.
A memorial fund will be established in his name to the American Diabetes Association and contributions may be sent to 27498 County Road FF, Webster, WI 54893.

F. Arlyne 'Sally' Barta, 81, of 1030 Memorial Dr. SE, died Sunday, September 21, in Mercy Medical Center from heart complications. Memorial services at 10:30 AM Thursday in Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories. Inurnment in Cedar Memorial Park cemetery . Sally is survived by two daughters Karen Kehoe and husband John, and Lu Barron and husband Bill, a son Dave Barta and wife Beth, four grandchildren, Tim Kehoe and Megan (Kehoe) Rife and husband Adam, B. J. and Barbara Barron, one great grandson Jacobi Rife, and a niece Nancy Showalter, all of Cedar Rapids. She was preceded in death by her parents, Jesse and Gladys Showalter, and four brothers Gail, Darwin 'Peanuts', Wayne, and Melvin Showalter.
Sally was born August 3, 1922 in Clarence, Iowa. She married
Howard J. Barta and later divorced. She worked at Standard Appliance, AAA Auto Club, and Cimino Distributing.
Sally was dedicated to her family and cared very deeply for her grandchildren. She had an endless list of friends, loved playing cards, and everyone who met her was touched in a special way.
She will truly be missed.

Howard R. Peckham, 88, of 4845 Johnson Ave NW, died Thursday, September 25, 2003, in Willow Gardens Care Center in Marion following a short illness. Services at 10 AM Monday in Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories. Dr. Herbert Isenberg of Westminster Presbyterian Church will officiate. Burial in Cedar Memorial Park cemetery . Friends may call at Cedar Memorial Funeral Home from 2 to 4 PM on Sunday and at the chapel after 9:30 AM on Monday.
Survivors include a daughter Joan Eidel, and two grandsons Matthew and Heath Eidel all of Marion, and his brother Arthur Peckham and wife Olene of Fredericksburg, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, a brother Barclay Peckham and a sister Amy Sturgeon.
Howard was born November 18, 1914 in Paullina, Iowa to David and Pearl DeWees Peckham. He married
Iona Young on August 25, 1940 in Gaza, Iowa. She died July 5, 2000. Howard was a driver for Hawkeye Motor Express and was Maintenance Superintendent for B. L. Anderson from 1949 to 1980. Howard was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, Mt. Hermon Masonic Lodge No 263 A.F. & A.M., Cedar Rapids Consistory, and El Kahir Shrine Hospital Dads.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Mercy.

James R. Romizer, 52, of 190 Derek Dr. in Marion died Monday. Sept. 29, 2003 at University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City after a short illness. Graveside services at 10 AM on Wed. at Cedar Memorial Park cemetery . There will be no visitation. Cedar Memorial Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include a son, Christopher, a daughter, Amanda, both of Cedar Rapids and a sister, Sherry Armstrong-Shanahan of Marion. He is also survived by several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Jim was born on May 11, 1951 in Cedar Rapids, the son of Joseph and Beverly Clark Romizer. A special thanks to Clint, who made the last few months easier for Jim.

Ruth E. O'Kelly, 85, of West Ridge Care Center, Cedar Rapids, formerly a resident of Village Ridge Assisted Living in Marion, died Saturday, September 27, 2003, in West Ridge Care Center after a courageous battle with cancer. Services at 10:30 AM Tuesday in Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories. Rev. Christine Wagner-Hecht Hospice of Mercy Chaplain will officiate. Entombment in Cedar Memorial Park cemetery . Survivors include her daughter Barbara (Lange) Charlier and husband Darrel of Marion, two granddaughters, Debra and Dawn Charlier of Marion, a brother David H. White of Columbia City, Indiana, and a sister-in-law Pauline Wagner of Marion. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, and her brothers, Carl R. White and Harold N. White.
Ruth was born May 27, 1918 in Cedar Rapids, the daughter of Carl Oliver and Angeline Hunter White. She graduated from Springville High School in 1936. She married
Glenn A. Lange on November 12, 1936. He passed away August 8, 1957. She married
Orval L. 'Pat' O'Kelly on December 19, 1958. He passed away March 18, 1994. Ruth worked at Rockwell Collins for 28 years in the white room before retiring in 1979.
Ruth loved her family and friends. She also loved music, dancing, traveling, books, crossword puzzles, crocheting, volunteer work and her cats. She shall be greatly missed by all who shared her life.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Hospice of Mercy in Cedar Rapids.

She is also survived by 10 grandchildren, and a sister-in-law, Maie Satterfield of Santa Rosa, CA. She was preceded in death by her parents.
Margaret was born on May 24, 1920 in Elmore, MN., the daughter of William and Esther Coupanger Schroeder. She graduated from St. Olaf College in 1942 with degrees in Music and English. She married
Albert J. Scott on Sept. 1, 1946 in Lakota. Margaret was a homemaker. Memorial donations may be given to the Truth and Life Mission Church or the Colorado Therapeutic Riding Center.

Barbara A. Lagerstrom, 66, of 331 Brentwood Dr. NE died Thursday, Oct. 2, 2003 at her home after a long illness. Memorial Services at 1 PM on Monday at the Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Nathan and Christine Bell, Samantha and Josephine Lagerstrom. She was preceded in death by a sister, Connie.
Barbara was born on Sept. 14. 1937 in Watertown SD. She graduated from the University of Nebraska in 1959. She married
Charles A. Lagerstrom on June 20, 1959 in Lincoln, NE. Barbara was a homemaker, a member of P.E.O. Chapter LU and Chi Omega. She was a long-term member of St. Lukes Auxiliary, first working in the Flower Stall and later moving to the administrative board, frequently serving as treasurer, both for the board and Festival of Trees. She was extensively involved in various craft work; participated in the Rockwell Craft Fair both as 'crafter' and as treasurer for the administration. In lieu of flowers, memorial donation may be given to St. Lukes Hospice in Barbara's name.

Merlin E. Herberger, 74, of 4169 Lakeview Dr. SW.,died on Friday, Oct. 3, 2003 peacefully at home following a long illness.
Survivors include his wife, Carolyn A. Herberger of Cedar Rapids, a son, Thomas D. Herberger, of Cedar Rapids and a daughter, Ann Woods Herberger, of Miami, Florida. He was preceded in death by his mother Sadie C. Streight and his father, Gregor Herberger.
Merle was born in Mackinaw, Illinois on January 6, 1929. He attended the Allendale Farm School and went on to graduate from Moline Public High School. Merle attended the University of Illinois at Champagne-Urbana and was a member of Delta Sigma fraternity. He was in the United States Naval Reserve and a longtime member of the Elks Club.
Merle came to Cedar Rapids in 1952 to manage Bremer's Clothing Store then in the Town and Country Shopping Center. He married
Carolyn Moeller on January 15, 1977. He was an independent contractor for the past 35 years.
Merle was loved by all who knew him and he will be greatly missed. The family would like to extend their sincere thanks to the St. Luke's Hospice program, particularly Julie, Shelly and Jim, along with Dr. Abby Thrower and Beth from Oncology Associates for their kind and loving care of Merle.
Visitation will be at the Cedar Memorial Funeral Home from 5 to 8 PM on Monday, Oct. 6, 2003. Funeral services will be held at 3 PM on Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2003 in the Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories. Entombment at Cedar Memorial Park cemetery . Rev. William B. Harnish will officiate.
