Hilding `Pete' Pearson
Hilding V. ``Pete" Pearson, 96, formerly of Colona House, died Wednesday, Aug. 16, 2000, at Forest Hill Health Care and Rehabilitation Center, East Moline.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Calvary Lutheran Church, Moline. The visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. today at Esterdahl Mortuary Ltd., Moline, with one hour visitation prior to service time at the church. Memorials may be made to the church.

Hilding V. was born Aug. 14, 1904, in Port Wing, Wis., the son of Carl and Alma Kristopherson Pearson. He married Hattie M. Franzen July 16, 1932, in Washburn, Wis. She died Oct. 4, 1991. The Pearsons moved to Moline in 1937.

Hilding retired from the former Montgomery Elevator Co., Moline, as a machine assembler in 1969 after 18« years. Prior to Montgomery, he had been employed at McLaughlin Body Co., Moline, assembling tractor cabs and at International Harvester, Moline, as a machinist. During WW II, he had worked at the Rock Island Arsenal as a machinist's assistant.

He was a Marine Corps veteran between WW I and WW II for four years. He stood guard at the Great Wall of China around Peking as part of his duty. He had been a very active member of Calvary Lutheran, holding various offices within the church, including being a board member, former president of the Men's Group, serving as trustee, deacon and head usher. He also was a member of the Building Committee when they built the sanctuary.

Hilding enjoyed woodworking and refinishing furniture.

Survivors (and spouses) include daughters, Francine Pearson (Robert), East Moline, Karen Luebbers (James), Glen Ellyn, Ill., and Lynne Smith (Richard), Aston, Pa.; five grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; a sister, Eunice Beeksma, Herbster, Wis.; and a brother, Phillip Pearson (Margaret), Mount Home, Ark.

Coal Valley

David Cook
David L. Cook, 67, of Tucson, Ariz., formerly of Coal Valley, died Wednesday, Aug. 16, 2000, at Trinity Medical Center, Rock Island.

Memorial services will be held at a later date in Tucson. Local arrangements were by Trimble Funeral Home, Moline.

David was born on Nov. 27, 1932, in Coal Valley to Everett and Dorothy (Baraks) Cook. He married Iris Brewer on Dec. 28, 1956, in Prescott, Ariz.

He was a Korean War Army veteran. He was self-employed. He enjoyed trap shooting and was president of the Tucson Trap and Skeet Club for many years.

David is survived by his wife, Iris; a daughter and son-in-law, Laurie and Pat Milord of Cloverdale, Calif.; grandchildren, David, Marissa and Macey; and a sister and brother-in-law, Donna and Richard Boens of Coal Valley.

Diane Hanson
Diane Hanson, 53, Sterling, died Tuesday, Aug. 15, 2000, at Sterling Pavilion Nursing Home.

Celebration of the Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Friday at St. Andrew Catholic Church, Rock Falls. Burial is in Calvary cemetery . Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. today at McDonald Funeral Home, Rock Falls.

She was born Jan. 9, 1947, in Canby, Minn., to Russell James and Leona Winkels Hanson. She was employed at Self Help Enterprises in Sterling. Diane enjoyed dancing and music.

Survivors include brothers, Donald, Alpha, Paul, Clinton, and Allan, Hampton; sisters, Dorothy Heaton, Geneseo, Janice Bates, Rock Falls, Marilyn Seidel, Ocoee, Fla., and Linda Ellis, Tucson, Ariz.; numerous nieces and nephews; and her friends and family at Hammet House in Sterling.

Marjie Helslander
Marjie I. Helslander, 55, Kewanee, died Tuesday, Aug. 15, 2000, at Kewanee Hospital.

Services are 11 a.m. Friday at Schueneman-Tumbleson Funeral Home, Kewanee. Burial is in Mount Olivet cemetery , Kewanee. Visitation is 6 to 8 p.m. today, with a rosary at 8 p.m. A memorial fund has been established.

She was born April 14, 1945, in Kewanee, the daughter of Vernon and Jesse Hegwood Tuthill. She married David Helslander May 11, 1983, in Kewanee.

Survivors include a daughter, Emily Shadrick, a son, Donald ``Lee" Watson, both of Kewanee; four grandchildren; sisters, Virginia Peed and Verna Briggs, Kewanee, Velma Sargent, Elmore, Ill., and Juanita Durrett, Wyoming, Ill.; and brothers, Vernon and Ivan Tuthill, Kewanee, and Leslie Tuthill, of Colorado.

Bradley Homer
Bradley Homer, 32, Galesburg, formerly of Kewanee, died Wednesday, Aug. 16, 2000, at OSF St. Mary Medical Center, Galesburg.

Services are 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Assembly of God Church, Kewanee. Burial is in Evergreen Memory Gardens, Kewanee.

Visitation is 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Rux Funeral Home, Kewanee. Memorials to the church.

He was born March 27, 1968, in Kewanee to George and Marjorie Howes Homer.

He graduated from Wethersfield High School in 1986. He was a client of Bridgeway, Galesburg.

Survivors include his parents, Kewanee; a brother, Steven, Kewanee; a sister, Jeri Hallinan, Colchester, Ill.; and a nephew, Christopher Hallinan, Colchester. He was preceded by his grandparents.

Ethel Janssen
Ethel Janssen, 87, formerly of Prophetstown and Erie, died Tuesday, Aug. 15, 2000, at Coventry Village, Sterling.

Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Gibson Funeral Home, Erie. Burial will be in Riverside cemetery , Prophetstown.

Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. Friday. Memorials may be made to First Lutheran Church, Prophetstown, where she was a member, or Webber Alzheimer Unit at Coventry Village.

The former Ethel Gerdes was born Aug. 5, 1913, in Lyndon, the daughter of Andrew and Christina Bolt Gerdes. She married Edward Janssen Feb. 15, 1934, in Morrison.

She enjoyed her community women's clubs, her friends and, especially, her grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband; daughters and sons-in-law, Beverly and Jerry Alls, Erie, and Anita and Ernie Schroeder, Erie; son and daughter-in-law, Gene and Marlene Janssen, Rock Falls; 11 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; a sister, Marie Jackson, Sterling; a brother, Elmer Gerdes, Tampico; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a grandson, two great-grandchildren and two brothers.

Martha Kophamer
Martha M. Kophamer, 97, died Tuesday, Aug. 15, 2000, at Resthave Nursing Home, Morrison.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Morrison. Burial will be in Oak Knoll Memorial Park, Sterling. Visitation will be 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Bosma-Renkes Funeral Home, Morrison. Memorials to St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Morrison, or Resthave Nursing Home.

She was born Nov. 10, 1902, in Wakefield, Neb., to William and Wilhelmina Brammer Lessman. She married John L. Kophamer Oct. 8, 1924, in Wayne, Neb. He died March 26, 1970.

She farmed with her husband in the rural Morrison area.

Survivors include a son, James Kophamer, Morrison; 14 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Wilbur Lessman, Sacramento, Calif.

Joan Larsen
Joan M. Larsen, 61, Aledo, died Tuesday, Aug. 15, 2000, at Genesis Medical Center, East Campus, Davenport.

Services are 10 a.m. Saturday at St. John's Catholic Church, Viola. Burial is in St. John's cemetery , Viola.

Visitation is 3 to 8 p.m. Friday at Family Funeral Services, Viola. Memorials may be made to the family.

She was born March 8, 1939, in Viola, the daughter of Merrill and Martha DeBlock Myers. She married Richard Larsen May 23, 1990, in Perrault Falls, Ontario, Canada.

She was a data entry clerk at Genesis Medical Center, East, for six years. She enjoyed gardening and flowers.

Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Cynthia Lowery, Moline; a son, Mark Lowery, Aledo; a stepdaughter and her husband, Jeannine and Alex Wildy, McHenry, Ill.; a stepson and his wife, Richard Jr. and Pamela Larsen, Capron, Ill.; four stepgrandchildren; and brothers and a sister-in-law, James Myers, Bettendorf, John Myers, Viola, and Warren and Anita Myers, Viola. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Virginia Caywood
Services for Virginia E. Caywood, 88, Bettendorf Healthcare Center, will be 1 p.m. Friday at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Davenport. Entombment will be in Davenport Memorial Park.

Visitation is one hour prior to service time at Halligan-McCabe-DeVries, Davenport. Memorials may go to the family or St. Anthony's Care & Share.

She died Wednesday, Aug. 16, 2000, at the center.

She was born July 4, 1912, in Delta, Iowa.

Survivors include a daughter, Jean Caywood, Bettendorf. She was preceded in death by a sister, Kay, May 28, 1999.

Thomas Nichol Jr.
Thomas L. Nichol Jr., 63, Winfield, Ala., formerly of Davenport, died Tuesday, Aug. 15, 2000, in Winfield.

Arrangements are pending at Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home, Davenport.

Suzanne Nielsen
Memorial Mass for Suzanne Kroppach Nielsen, 75, Tower, Minn., formerly of Davenport, will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Davenport. Private burial is in Davenport Memorial Park. Visitation is 4 to 7 p.m. today at Weerts Funeral Home, Davenport.

She died Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2000, at St. Mary's Medical Center, Duluth, Minn.

She was born May 7, 1925, in Davenport, the daughter of Arthur and Anna Kroppach. She married Louis S. Nielsen Oct. 14, 1950, in Davenport. She was co-owner and operator of Midwest Insurors Ltd., Davenport.

Survivors include her husband; daughter, Amy Nielsen, Cordova; son, Jeffry Nielsen, Alamogordo, N.M.; a grandson, Scott Nielsen; and a brother, Lt. Col. James R. Kroppach, Tacoma, Wash.

Nancy Purdy
Nancy A. Purdy, 48, Bettendorf, died Tuesday, Aug. 15, 2000, at home after an extended illness.

Services are 11 a.m. Friday at McGinnis, Chambers and Sass, Bettendorf. Burial is in Pleasant Valley cemetery . Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. today.

She was born Dec. 22, 1951, in Davenport. She married Art Purdy June 21, 1980.

She was an IBEW electrician.

Surviving are her husband; daughter, Jennifer James, Davenport; sons, Christopher and Travis, Bettendorf; two grandchildren; and her parents, Stanley and Arlene Schutter, and a brother, John Schutter, all of Bettendorf.

Rosamond Dowden
Rosamond Dowden, 91, a resident of Spencer Tower, Rock Island, died Saturday, April 14, 2001, at Comfort Harbor Home in Milan.

Graveside services are 8:30 a.m. Saturday at Carbon Cliff cemetery , Carbon Cliff. There is no visitation. Arrangements were handled by Hodgson Funeral Home, Rock Island.

Ms. Dowden was born Nov. 27, 1909, in Illinois.

She was employed as a clerk at JCPenney.

Rosemary Garard
Rosemary K. Garard, 76, Rock Island, died Tuesday, April 17, 2001, at Parkview Healthcare Center, East Moline.

Services are 8:30 a.m. today at DeRoo Funeral Home, Moline and 9 a.m. at St. Pius X Church, Rock Island, where she was a member. Burial is in National cemetery , Arsenal Island. Visitation was Thursday at the funeral home with a Christian Wake service. Memorials may be made to Beacon of Hope Hospice or Alzheimer's Association.

Mrs. Garard was born Sept. 22, 1924, in Chicago, the daughter of Wallace and Hilda Balluff Hugunin. She married Robert A. Garard Sept. 14, 1940, in Davenport.

She retired after 30 years as a systems analyst and security officer for data processing for the Headquarters, U.S. Army Weapons Command, Rock Island Arsenal.

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Kenneth Van DerGinst, Moline; son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Lisa Garard, Rock Island; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Wilroy Henderson
Wilroy Henderson, 59, Rock Island, died Wednesday, April 18, 2001, at home.

Arrangements are pending at Knox-Larson Funeral Home, Rock Island.

Hope Moffitt
Hope Vella Marguerite Moffitt, infant daughter of Jeff and Kristine Snyder Moffitt, Rock Island, died at birth, Thursday, April 19, 2001 at Trinity Medical Center, West Campus, Rock Island.

Graveside services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Monday at National cemetery , Arsenal Island. Visitation will be 10-11 a.m. Monday at Wheelan Funeral Home, Rock Island. Memorials may be made to Memorial Heights United Methodist Church, Rock Island.

Survivors include her parents, Jeff and Kristine; a brother, Seth, at home; grandparents, Larry and Vicki Finley, Aledo, Wally and Pat Moffitt, Channahon, Ill., Roger and Claudia Snyder, Monmouth, Norm and Nancy Wirtala, Rock Island and a great-grandmother, Carolyne Moffitt, Macomb.
