Marjorie `Aunt Marge' Riley
Marjorie 'Aunt Marge' Riley, 80, Galva, died Wednesday, July 30, 2003, at Kewanee Hospital.

Cremation has been accorded. Graveside inurnment is 1 p.m. Monday in Galva cemetery .

There is no visitation. Memorials may be made to the Galva Library. Rux, Galva, is handling arrangements.

She was born June 13, 1923, in LaFayette, Ill., the daughter of John and Florence King DeMay. She married Hurley 'Curley' Riley Jan. 2, 1942, in Hannibal, Mo. He died Nov. 13, 1983.

Survivors (and spouses) are her son, John 'Jack' (Sue) Riley, Houston, Texas; stepson, Johnny Payne; sister, Betty (David) Radler, Milwaukee, Wis.; and several nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and -nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and brother, Gilbert DeMay.

Erma Speck
Erma E. Speck, 85, of Keithsburg, died Thursday, July 31, 2003, at Mercer County Hospital, Aledo.

Delmar `Butch' Ward
Delmar C. 'Butch' Ward, 38, of Port St. Lucie, Fla., formerly of Keithsburg and Aledo, died Wednesday, July 30, 2003, in Stuart, Fla.

The body will be cremated. A private memorial service and burial will be held at a later date. A memorial fund has been established; memorials may be sent to the family. Fippinger Funeral Home, Aledo, is handling arrangements.

He was born Aug. 6, 1964, in Aledo to Delmar and Sharon Johnson Ward. He graduated from Westmer High School in 1983.

Survivors include his mother and stepfather, Sharon and Jim Bridgford, Aledo; his father, Delmar Ward; sisters, Becky Koresko, Taylor Ridge, Kris Johnson, Keithsburg, and Jennifer Bridgford, Milan; a brother, Jeff Bridgford, Aledo; grandfather, Bob Johnson, Keithsburg; and nephews.

Willard Farnum Sr.
Services for Willard Farnum Sr., 80, Buffalo, Iowa, are 10 a.m. Monday at Halligan-McCabe-DeVries, Davenport. Burial is in Rose Hill cemetery , Buffalo. Visitation is 2-5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

He died Wednesday, July 30, 2003, at Bettendorf Health Care.

Surviving are his children, Roy and Daniel, both of Davenport, Gordon, Bettendorf, Margaret Eisenbise, Roswell, N.M., Charon Estabrook, Blue Grass, Iowa, Rose Miers, Bellview, Wis., and Lois Mayfield, Angleton, Texas; a daughter-in-law; a brother; a sister; 33 grandchildren, 46 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.

Norman Hartz

Services for Norman L. Hartz, 93, Davenport, are 10 a.m. Monday at Holy Family Catholic Church, Davenport. Burial is in Holy Family cemetery . Visitation is 4-6 p.m. Sunday at Halligan-McCabe-DeVries, Davenport, with a 5:30 p.m. prayer service.

He died Wednesday, July 30, 2003, at Genesis West, Davenport.

He was born Aug. 26, 1909, to Conrad and Norma Fick Hartz.

Survivors are his wife, Gertrude; children, Janet Schroeder, Bettendorf, Mary Harmsen, Fort Collins, Colo., and Richard Hartz, Davenport; eight grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Everett Stapleton
Everett Stapleton, 88, Bettendorf, died Wednesday, July 30, 2003, at Genesis East, Davenport.

Services are 11 a.m. Saturday at St. John Vianney Catholic Church, Bettendorf. Visitation is 10-11 a.m. Saturday at the church. Family burial services are in National cemetery , Arsenal Island.

He was born June 13, 1915. He married Helen Marie Koss in 1947.

Surviving are his daughters, Marie Johansen, Midland, Mich., and Reen Keller, Littlerock, Calif.; grandson, Curt Ophaug-Johansen, Broomfield, Colo.; great-grandson, Ian, and special friend, Janet Meyers, Bettendorf.

Glenn Gerlich
Glenn B. Gerlich, 76, of Plano, Texas, formerly of Rock Island, died Tuesday, July 29, 2003, at the Clyde W. Cosper Texas State Veterans Home, Bonham, Texas.

Services will be 9:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Rock Island. Burial will be Monday at National cemetery , Arsenal Island.

Visitation is 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at Wheelan Funeral Home, Rock Island, where a Christian wake service will be held at 7 p.m. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.

Mr. Gerlich was born March 21, 1927, in Rock Island, son of Raymond and Lydia Morrison Gerlich.

He worked as a quality-assurance specialist with the U.S. government. Glenn was a World War II Navy veteran.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Tanya and Paul Engle, Danville, Calif.; son, Garry Gerlich, Plano, Texas; grandchildren, Taylor Engle, Christopher Gerlich and Alisha Hall; a great-grandson, Dalton Hall; a sister, Bernice Jerkins, Rock Island; and a brother, Paul Gerlich, Moline.

Katrena Drewes
Katrena Drewes, 75, of Moline, died Wednesday, July 30, 2003, at her home.

Arrangements are pending at Esterdahl Mortuary, Moline.

James Durbin
James Newton Durbin, 88, of East Moline, died Monday, July 28, 2003, at his home.

Services and Requiem Mass are 11 a.m. Friday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Hampton, with the Rev. James DeBisschop officiating. Burial is in St. Mary's Catholic cemetery , East Moline. Visitation is 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today at Sullivan-Phillips Funeral Home, East Moline, with a rosary recited at 2 p.m.

He was born Feb. 24, 1915, in Morrisonville, Ill., to James N. and Vieanna Durbin. He married Mary G. Traeger April 4, 1938. He married Myrtle Tranum July 23, 1970. She preceded him in death in 1996.

He worked as a molder at Frank Foundries, Moline, for 30 years, retiring in 1980. He had lived in the Quad-Cities for 40 years. He was a World War II Navy veteran.

He was a member of Moline Conservation Club and St. Mary's Catholic Church, Hampton. He enjoyed fishing and playing horseshoes.

Survivors (and spouses) include his daughters, Mary (Richard) Vojas, Collinsville, Ill., and Agnes (Harry) Stephens, Loveland, Ohio; sons, John F. (Mary Ann) Durbin and Michael P. (Cindy) Durbin, both of East Moline; 22 grandchildren; 51 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and daughter-in-law, Patricia Durbin, Moline. He was preceded in death by sons, James N., Arthur C. and infant son, Joseph P. Durbin, who died at birth.

Charles VanAusdall
Charles R. 'Van' VanAusdall, 77, of Venice, Fla., formerly of East Moline, died Monday, July 28, 2003.

A memorial service will be announced. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Southwest Florida, 5955 Rand Blvd., Sarasota, FL 34238, or Immanuel Lutheran Church, East Moline, where he was a member.

He was born Oct. 10, 1925, in Moline. He moved to Florida from East Moline in 1973. He served with the U.S. Navy Amphibious Forces during World War II.

He was a retired electrician/maintenance foreman for J.I. Case Co., Bettendorf. He was a member of the American Legion, Venice, and former member of Elks and Moose, Moline.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Joyce; daughters, Cheri Salisbury, Eatonton, Ga., and Laura Kilmer, Moline; son, John, Monmouth; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sister, Velma Stolbom, Arizona; and brother, Thomas, California.

Esther Weber
Esther M. Weber, 88, of East Moline, formerly of Erie, died Tuesday, July 29, 2003, at Illini Restorative Care, Silvis.

Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Erie Christian Church. Burial will be in Rose Lawn Memorial Estates, Moline. Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Gibson Funeral Home, Erie. Memorials may be made to the church or the Erie Ambulance Service.

The former Esther Marie Hasty was born June 29, 1915, in Deer Creek, Ill., daughter of Alva and Susie Whistler Hasty. She married John Butler Oct. 19, 1934, in Silvis. He died Dec. 14, 1979. She then married Walter Weber Nov. 1, 1980, in Erie.

She was a beautician and had operated beauty shops in the Quad-Cities area.

Mrs. Weber was a member of Erie Christian Church and the Bereans Class of the church. She was one of the founders of the Port Byron Senior Citizens Meal Site.

Survivors include her husband; daughter, Sue Wriedt, Port Byron; sons, Donald Butler and John Butler, both of San Jose, Calif.; stepdaughters, Jane Carlsen, Kasson, Minn., Judy Hannis, Erie, and Janet Matesic, Flint, Mich.; eight grandchildren; nine stepgrandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; 14 stepgreat-grandchildren; and four stepgreat-great-grandchildren.

Riffe Seymour
Riffe R. Seymour, 80, of Milan, died Wednesday, July 30, 2003, at River Park Healthcare Center, Rock Island.

Services are 1 p.m. Friday at First Church of the Nazarene, Rock Island. Burial with military rites presented by the Reynolds American Legion Post 1166 will be in National cemetery , Arsenal Island. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, Milan. Memorials may be made to the building fund of First Church of the Nazarene.

Riffe was born Jan. 5, 1923, in Liberty Center, Ohio, son of Clarence and Della Redfield Seymour. He married Grace Kessler Sept. 29, 1946, in Liberty Center, Ohio.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in the Normandy and Rhineland campaigns during World War II. Riffe was a Purple Heart recipient.

Riffe worked at the former Rossford, Ohio, Ordnance Depot for 17 years. He later worked at the Rock Island Arsenal, retiring in 1990 following 24 years of service. He and his son also operated a vegetable stand at the Davenport Farmer's Market for many years.

He was a member of First Church of the Nazarene and Reynolds American Legion Post 1166.

He enjoyed his family, particularly his grandchildren, and picnics together with them.

His interests included walking and gardening.

Surviving are his wife, Grace, Milan; daughter, Riffann Klavohn, and her husband, Ronald, Bolingbrook, Ill.; son, Clarence Seymour, and his wife, Barbara, Milan; 12 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; sisters, Eloise Stevens, Napoleon, Ohio, and Bernice Compton, Findlay, Ohio; and three nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and three sons and one daughter, all in infancy.

Edward Dorland
Edward D. 'Ed' Dorland, 75, of Port Charlotte, Fla., formerly of Coal Valley, went to be with his Lord and Master Saturday, July 26, 2003, in Wayne, Neb.

His body was cremated and memorial services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Trimble Funeral Home, Coal Valley. The Revs. Steven and Marjolein Anderson will officiate. Burial is in Coal Valley cemetery . Visitation is 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, where Valley Lodge 547, AF & AM, Coal Valley, will conduct Masonic funeral services at 6 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Alzheimer's Treatment and Research Center, 640 Jackson St., St. Paul, MN 55101 or your local hospice association.

Edward David Dorland was born June 5, 1928, in Table Rock, Neb., to Edward L. And Eula Bader Dorland. He married Yvonne Koltenbeck Sept. 24, 1949.

He was a general foreman in the assembly division of John Deere Harvester Works, East Moline, for 35 years, retiring in 1982.

Ed was a former trustee of the Coal Valley Fire Protection District; a Boy Scout scout master; a member of Valley Lodge 547, AF & AM; and Order of Eastern Star, Coal Valley; Scottish Rite Bodies, Valley of Moline; and Coal Valley Lions Club. He was a longtime member of Oakwood Country Club, Coal Valley, and a member of Punta Gorda, Fla., Country Club. He was a member of the Port Charlotte United Methodist Church.

He volunteered as a bus driver for the church, picking up children for after-school programs and the elderly for Sunday morning services. Ed enjoyed golf and traveling, he dearly loved spending time with his grandchildren, and he loved his pet, Lady.

He will be remembered by all who knew him for his great sense of humor and his ability to tease and please.

Ed is survived by his wife, Yvonne; children and spouses, Diane and Grant Schlotman, Milford, Neb., David and Nancy Dorland, Rock Island, and Denise McMaster, Port Charlotte; grandchildren, Tracy, Shana, Lucinda, Nicole, Melissa, Damian, Royanne, Chelsea and Patty; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and two sisters.

Harold 'Shorty' Parker
Harold C. 'Shorty' Parker, 80, of 208 4th Ave., Albany, Ill., died Wednesday, July 30, 2003, at Harbor Crest Nursing Home, Fulton.

Arrangements are pending at Bosma-Renkes Funeral Home, Fulton.

Roberta Price
Roberta H. 'Bert' Price, 70, of Neponset, died Wednesday, July 30, 2003, at her home.

Services are 11 a.m. Friday at Rux Funeral Home, Kewanee. Burial is in Evergreen Memorial Gardens, Kewanee. Visitation is 6 to 8 p.m. today.

She was born Aug. 7, 1932, in Bureau County, Ill., to Robert L. and Lillian H. Becker Hancock. She married Willard Q. Price Sept. 25, 1982, in Kewanee.

Survivors (and spouses) include her husband, Willard; son, Frank (Suzanne) Price, Sandwich, Ill.; daughters, Madelyn (Bob) Green, Galva, Carolyn (George) Magis, Hennepin, Ill., Rebecca (Dennis) DeClercq, Brownsburg, Ind., and Patricia (Paul) Nelson, Thiensville, Wis.; nine grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and brother, Donald (Catherine) Hancock, Kernersville, N.C.

Otho Spears
Services for Otho K. Spears, 89, of Sterling, Ill., formerly of Tampico and Deer Grove, Ill., are 11 a.m. Friday at Garland Funeral Home, Tampico. Visitation is 9 a.m. to services Friday. Graveside services are 3 p.m. at Rochelle, Ill., cemetery , with burial to follow.

He died Tuesday, July 29, 2003, at CGH Medical Center, Sterling.

He was born Feb. 16, 1914, in Bingham, Ill., to Otis and Ethel Spears. He married Bernice Beardin March 27, 1937.

Surviving are his wife; daughter, Nadine Miller, Grand Rapids, Mich.; sons, Ronald, West Bend, Wis., DeWayne, Rockford, and Merwin, Fort Meyers, Fla.; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; three stepgreat-grandchildren; brothers, Raymond Spears, Rockford, and Earl Spears, Ohio; sisters, Violet Masters and Teddie Stevens, both of Taylorville, Ill.
