Rock Rapids, Iowa

Phyllis Dirks, 74, of Rock Rapids died Thursday, June 10, 2004, at Merrill Pioneer Community Hospital, Rock Rapids.

Services were Monday at Bethel Reformed Church, rural Ellsworth, Minn., with interment in the church cemetery .

Phyllis TeKrony was born Aug. 3, 1929, in Bemis, S.D., the daughter of Anton and Delia (Wiemap) TeKrony. She grew up and attended country school in the Bemis area. She attended nursing school in Pierre, S.D., then moved to New Underwood, S.D., where she worked as a nurse assistant. In 1951, she moved to Rock Rapids and worked as a nurse assistant for Dr. Wubbena in the Rock Rapids hospital.

On June 23, 1953, she married Melvin Dirks in Bemis. They farmed northeast of Rock Rapids. In 1982, she began working as a registered nurse aide at Rock Rapids Health Centre. In 2001, the couple moved to Rock Rapids.

At Bethel Reformed Church, she was a member of Joy Circle and Quilting Guild.

Survivors include her husband; three sons, Gerald and Douglas, both of Rock Rapids, and Randy of South Sioux City, Neb.; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two brothers, Albert of Long Beach, Calif., and Lloyd of Clear Lake, S.D., and five sisters, Gertie Schwake and Marth Tesch, both of of Watertown, S.D., Agnes Greenfield of Castlewood, S.D., Mrs. Charles (Verna) Brogmann of Minneapolis, Minn., and Mrs. Clinton (Norma) Krause of Clear Lake, S.D.

She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers and one sister.

Theodora Schelling, 71
Sioux Center, Iowa
July 26, 2004

Theodora (Van Batavia) Schelling, 71, of Sioux Center died Monday, July 26, 2004, at Sioux Center Community Hospital.

Services were Thursday at First Reformed Church, Sioux Center, with interment in Memory Gardens cemetery .

Survivors include her husband, one daughter, one son, nine grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Bob (Sharon) Soodsma of Doon.

Melvin Wissink, 74
Rock Rapids, Iowa
July 28, 2004

Melvin Wissink, 74, of Rock Rapids died Wednesday, July 28, 2004, at his home.

Services were Saturday at Christian Church (Disciples), Rock Rapids, with interment in Riverview cemetery .

Mr. Wissink was born April 10, 1930, in Sioux Center, the son of Martin and Lillian (Jongerius) Wissink. When he was 7, the family moved to Rock Rapids. After graduating from high school, he worked in construction with his father. In 1949, he began working at Rasmussen Tin Shop.

On April 15, 1951, he married Gloria Frohloff in Rock Rapids. After serving in the army, he returned to work at Rasmussen Tin Shop. In 1963, he began working construction with his father and brother. He 1999, he was diagnosed with multi-infarct dementia.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Scott of Rock Rapids and Kent of Sioux Falls, S.D.; one daughter, Melanie DeGroot of George; eight grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Gerrit (Betty) Vander Kolk of Doon.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Delmer, and an infant son.

Felicitas Underberg, 86
Rock Rapids, Iowa
July 30, 2004

Felicitas "Sid" Underberg, 86, died Friday, July 30, 2004, at Merrill Pioneer Community Hospital, Rock Rapids.

Funeral mass was Monday at St. Mary Catholic Church, Larchwood.

Felicitas Perkinson was born March 20, 1918, in Larchwood, the daughter of James and Nellie (Schat) Perkinson. She attended St. Mary Catholic School in Larchwood, graduating in 1936. She worked as a live-in nanny in the Sioux Falls, S.D., area several years.

On Aug. 27, 1940, she married Theodore Underberg in Larchwood. They lived in Larchwood and worked as farm hands. She later worked at Jack and Jill store, retiring in 1981. Her husband died in 1992. She had been a resident of Lyon Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Rock Rapids, the past eight years.

Survivors include five sons, Jim of Baldwin, Kan., Fritz and Tom, both of Sioux Falls, S.D., and Willie and Ted, both of Larchwood; seven daughters, Mrs. Robert (Barb) Sehr of Larchwood, Mrs. Jon (Patti) Schmidt of Lake Placid, Fla., and Sharon Hinrichs, Mrs. Cliff (Shirley) Breen, Mr. Ron (Diane) Brower, Coni Kangley and Meribeth Larson, all of Sioux Falls; 36 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; two brothers, Johnny and Robert, both of Sioux Falls, and three sisters, Viola Lape, Florence Hansen and Mary Oren, all of Sioux Falls.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one sister, Katherine Kadinger, and one grandson, Greg Sehr.

Ruth Knadle, 96
Inwood, Iowa
October 1, 2004

Ruth Knadle, 96, of Inwood died Friday, Oct. 1, 2004, at Fellowship Village, Inwood.

Memorial services were Monday, Oct. 4, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Rock Rapids, with interment in Forest Hill cemetery , Canton, S.D.

Ruth Knowlton was born July 24, 1908, in Canton, S.D., the daughter of Jefferson and Florence Knowlton. She attended school in Canton and at Augustana Normal.

On Aug. 5, 1932, she married Myrlan Anderson. He died Sept. 9, 1950.

On Feb. 28, 1956, she married Frank Knadle. They lived in Watertown, S.D., before moving to Rock Rapids in 1966. They had been residents of Fellowship Village in Inwood since 2000.

He died March 22, 2002.

She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and Mission Circle in Rock Rapids.

Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Dick (Kay) Haisch of Canton and Mrs. Morrie (Jane) Trandal of Greeley, Colo.; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and two sisters, June Burks of Minneapolis, Minn., and Mary Burns of Wichita, Kan.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, two brothers and one sister.

Beverly Monkemeier, 86
Sheldon, Iowa
October 3, 2004

Beverly Monkemeier, 86, of Sheldon died Sunday, Oct. 3, 2004, at Northwest Iowa Health Center, Sheldon.

Services were Wednesday, Oct. 6, at Tabernacle Baptist Church, George, with interment in Evergreen Lawn cemetery .

Beverly Thoelke was born Aug. 22, 1918, at White, S.D., the daughter of Henry and Grace (Boekhout) Thoelke. She grew up on a farm and attended country school and two years of high school in White. Her family moved to George in 1935.

In December 1936, she married Raymond Cassens. They moved to Sioux Falls, S.D., and later to George where he operated a gas station and delivery truck. In 1949, they sold the station and bought a farm at Eagle Bend, Minn., where they farmed 17 years. After selling the farm, they moved to Minneapolis, Minn. Her husband died in 1976. Beverly remained in Minneapolis until she retired in 1980 and moved back to George.

In 1989, she married William Monkemeier in George. They lived in George until 2002 when they moved into Christian Retirement Home in Sheldon.

She was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church, George.

Survivors include her husband; one son, Daryl Cassens of Minneapolis, Minn.; one daughter, Mrs. Bruce (Shirley) Bowman of George; two stepdaughters, Shirley Winkowitsch of Ashton and Mrs. Daryl (Karen) Olson of Albuquerque, N.M.; four grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; six step grandchildren; 11 step great-grandchildren; two brothers, Bud of George and Duane of Forest City, and one sister, Earlene Hilbrands of Sheldon.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and one sister, Viola Heidebrink.
