Little Rock, Iowa
November 27, 2004

Gladys Christians, 75, of Little Rock, died Saturday, Nov. 27, 2004, at Sibley Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Services were Tuesday, Nov. 29, at Salem Reformed Church, Little Rock, with interment in Pleasant View cemetery .

John Van Bemmel

Mr. John Van Bemmel, age 92, of Orange City, passed away Friday, March 23, at the Sioux Center Community Nursing Home.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 27, at 10:30 a.m. at the Redeemer United Reformed Church in Orange City. Rev. Ralph A. Pontier officiated.

John was born June 7, 1908, in Barneveld, Gelderland, the Netherlands, the son of Hendrik and Maria (Van Hill) Van Bemmel. He came to America with his parents at the age of 9, and they settled at Rock Valley.

On Feb. 22, 1934, he married Gertrude De Jong at Le Mars (Carnes). They made their home in Orange City, where John was a barber for 58 years. Mrs. Van Bemmel passed away Sept. 26, 1989, in Orange City.

In January of 1993, Mr. Van Bemmel became a resident of the Pioneer Memorial Home in Orange City. In April of 1999, he transferred to the Sioux Center Community Nursing Home.

Currently, he was a member of the Redeemer United Reformed Church. He was a former member of the First Christian Reformed Church in Orange City, where he had served as a deacon, elder, Sunday school superintendent, and men's society leader for many years.

Survivors include his son and his wife, Harold "Sonny" and Thelma Van Bemmel, of Orange City; daughter and her husband, Jennie "Snooks" and Donald Pluim, of Hull; six grandchildren and their spouses, Dave and Laura Pluim; Verla and Alvin Hoogland, Ruthann and Kevin Haverhals, Karen and Mike Bosma, Lora and Kevin Ten Napel, and Jeffrey and Wanda Van Bemmel; and nineteen great-grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a grandson, Glenn Pluim; three brothers, Al, Joe, and Henry Van Bemmel; and four sisters, Hattie (Boon) Vink, Gert Hoekstra, Cornelia Haak, and Jeanette Peterson.

Jennie A. Miller

Jennie A. Miller, 84, of Hawarden died suddenly Wednesday, March 21, at the Hillcrest Health Care Center in Hawarden.

Services were 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 24, at the United Methodist Church in Hawarden. Rev. Dean Shelly officiated.

Mrs. Miller was born Nov. 7, 1916, in Rock Valley, the daughter of Peter and Jennie (Buitenhuis) Smit. She married Russell H. Miller on Aug. 14, 1941, in Sheldon. He died Feb. 21, 1965. She moved to Hawarden in 1983. She moved to Hillcrest Health Care Center in 1986.

She enjoyed needlepoint, bingo and playing cards. She sold Avon products while living in the nursing home.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Hawarden.

Survivors include two sons, Russell Miller of Canton, S.D., and Wayne Miller and his companion, Marlyn Lohr, of Hawarden: two daughters and their husbands, Elsie and Gene Evans of Cedar Rapids, and Kathryn and Willis Den Boer of Sioux Falls; two daughters-in-law, Bonnie Miller of Hawarden and Diana Miller of Canton; 18 grandchildren; 45 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by two sons, Harvey Lloyd Miller and Peter Calvin Miller.

Ruth Ann Johnson

Ruth Ann Johnson, 55, of Sunrise Manor Nursing Home in Sioux City, formerly of Craig, and Le Mars, died Tuesday, March 20, in Sioux City.

Services were 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 24, at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Craig. Rev. Pete Petersen officiated.

Ruth Ann Johnson was born Jan. 20, 1946, in Le Mars, the daughter of Chris E. and Hazel Tullis Johnson. She was baptized and confirmed at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Craig. She graduated from Le Mars Community High School in 1964.

She lived with her parents in Craig while she worked at the Truck Haven Cafe in Le Mars for 18 years. The family moved to Le Mars in 1976. Miss Johnson moved to an apartment in Le Mars when her mother died in 1982.

She later moved to the Casala House in Le Mars and worked at Plymouth Pride. In June of 1998 Miss Johnson moved to the Sunrise Manor Nursing Home in Sioux City. She enjoyed bowling.

Survivors include several aunts, uncles and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Lois Van Den Berg

Lois Van Den Berg, 79, of Doon died Saturday, March 24, at Hegg Memorial Hospital in Rock Valley.

Services were 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 28, at the First Reformed Church in Doon. Rev. Don Baker officiated.

Mrs. Van Den Berg was born April 23, 1921, in Brent, Ala., the daughter of Ottie and Adeal (Fulford) Whaley. She married Clarence Van Den Berg on July 13, 1947, in Killeen, Texas. They moved to Sioux Center, before moving to Doon in 1956, where they opened Doon Feed and Produce and later became part owners of Doon Elevator Company.

She was active in school, community and church activities. She was a member of First Reformed Church where she taught Sunday school, Vacation Bible School and catechism.

Survivors include her husband; two sons and their wives, Gary and Lori Van Den Berg, and Jeff and Laurel Van Den Berg, all of Sioux Falls; two grandchildren; four sisters, Polly Oakley, Mert and her husband, Joe Peeks, all of Humboldt, Tenn., Minnie and her husband, Ed Brown of Randolph, Ala., and Carolyn and her husband, Gerald Smitherman of Birmingham, Ala.

Eugene C. Mulder

Mr. Eugene Mulder, age 84, of Orange City, passed away Saturday, March 24, at the Orange City Municipal Hospital.

Funeral services were Wednesday, March 28, at 11 a.m. at the American Reformed Church in Orange City. Rev. Harlan Van Oort and the Rev. Robert Wallinga officiated.

Eugene Charles was born Aug. 6, 1916, at Orange City, the son of Charles R. and Grace (Pranger) Mulder. He was raised at Orange City, where he attended Northwestern College. During World War II, he served in the United States Army Air Corps.

On Aug. 11, 1939, he married Gladys Viola Bloemendaal at Orange City. They made their home in Orange City, where he was employed by the Sioux Rural Electric Cooperative from 1938 to 1983, serving as manager since 1939. He oversaw the tremendous growth of the REC locally and was active in their local, state, and national associations.

In the summer of 1987, Mr. and Mrs. Mulder moved to Des Moines. Later they moved to Iowa City. For many years, they wintered in Clearwater, Fl. In December of 2000, they returned to Orange City, where they became residents of the Landsmeer Ridge Retirement Community.

He was a member of the American Reformed Church, where he served on the consistory and sang in the choir. He served as president of the Sioux County Concert Series and was a member of the Ramblers, the Lions Club, and the American Legion.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter and her husband, Pamela and Vince Nelson, of Iowa City; and a sister, Genevieve Dahlke, of Williamston, Mich.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Ryan B. Mulder and Harlan Mulder.

Memorials are being directed to Landsmeer Ridge.
