Rock Rapids, Iowa

Ethel Shinkle, 95, of Rock Rapids died Sunday, Nov. 21, 2004, at Rock Rapids Health Centre.

Services were Saturday, Nov. 27, at Christian Church (Disciples), Rock Rapids, with interment in Graceland cemetery , Madison, S.D.

Ethel Tystad was born June 14, 1909, near Veblen, S.D., the daughter of Joseph and Ida (Johnson) Tystad. The family moved to Washington where she started school. They moved back to South Dakota. When she was 13, her mother died and she helped care for the family and with farming. She attended high school one year. She worked on a ranch in Scoby, Mont., then returned to South Dakota where she worked in Sisseton, Webster and Madison.

On Dec. 31, 1931, she married Clinton Shinkle in Sioux Falls, S.D. They lived in Madison and Howard, S.D., and Pipestone, Minn., before moving to Rock Rapids in 1943.

At Christian Church (Disciples), she belonged to the women's organization and taught Sunday School.

Survivors include one son, Clinton of Seabeck, Wash.; one daughter, Mrs. Arnold (Gayla) Tiedemann of Hull; 13 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; two step great-grandchildren; one step great-great-grandchild and one sister, Clara Skaarhaug of Grenville, S.D.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one daughter, Loretta; one brother and one sister.

Edna Jongewaard, 97
Rock Rapids, Iowa
November 22, 2004

Edna Jongewaard, 97, of Rock Rapids died Monday, Nov. 22, 2004, at Rock Rapids Health Centre.

Services were Monday, Nov. 29, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Rock Rapids, with interment in Riverview cemetery .

Edna Schmidt was born Sept. 23, 1907, in Rock Valley, the daughter of John and Minnie (Kruse) Schmidt. After the death of her father in 1920, she moved with her mother, brother and sister to Rock Rapids. She graduated from Wilson High School in Rock Rapids in 1926. She attended Morningside College in Sioux City and Drake University in Des Moines to earn her teaching certificate. She taught country school in northwest Iowa several years and then taught at schools in Alton and Sioux Center.

On Oct. 14, 1937, she married Harold Jongewaard at Rock Rapids. They lived in Rock Rapids where she was involved in and was the receptionist for her husband's business, Jongewaard Funeral Home. They retired in 1967.

Her husband died March 21, 1983. She became a resident of Premier Estates in May 2004 and moved to Rock Rapids Health Centre Oct. 7, 2004.

She was a member of PEO Sisterhood and had served on the Rock Rapids Public Library Board.

Survivors include nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two sisters and three brothers.

Hubert Tiedeman, 85
Sheldon, Iowa
November 22, 2004

Hubert Tiedeman, 85, of Sheldon, died Monday, Nov. 22, 2004, at Northwest Iowa Health Center Senior Care, Sheldon.

Services were Friday, Nov. 26, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, rural Hull, with interment in the church cemetery .

Survivors include his wife, two sons, one daughter, eight grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and three sisters including Lori Thompson and Dorothy McCormack, both of Rock Rapids.

Scotty Reynolds, 83
Sioux City, Iowa
November 23, 2004

Scotty Reynolds, 83, of Sioux City died Tuesday, Nov. 23, 2004, at a Sioux City hospital.

Memorial services were Friday, Nov. 26, at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel.

Mr. Reynolds was born May 9, 1921, in Teresita, Mo. He attended school in Merrill, Bronson, Salix and Sioux City, graduated from East High School in 1939. He served in the army, then graduated from Morningside College in 1950 with teaching and physical education certificates. He coached boys basketball and baseball and taught typing and bookkeeping in Alvord, Climbing Hill and Sloan before he began teaching industrial arts at East Junior High School in Sioux City. He acquired a master's degree in industrial arts from Colorado State University.

On Aug. 30, 1947, he married Peggy Smith of Sioux City.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Randy of Sioux City and Tom of California; two daughters, Mrs. Randy (Becky) Hansen and Mrs. Alan (Tammy) Fagan, both of Sioux City; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild and one brother, Bruce of California.

John Harkema, 62
Rock Rapids, Iowa
November 25, 2004

John Harkema, 62, of Rock Rapids died Thursday, Nov. 25, 2004, at Merrill Pioneer Community Hospital, Rock Rapids.

Services were Tuesday, Nov. 30, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Rock Rapids, with interment in Riverview cemetery .

Mr. Harkema was born April 4, 1942, near sioux Falls, S.D., the son of Benjamin and Lillian (Sommervold) Harkema. He attended Sioux Falls Community schools, then worked several different jobs in the Sioux Falls area.

On Nov. 4, 1963, he married Marie Driscoll in Sioux Falls. In 1969, they moved to Auburn, Wash., where he worked in the carpentry field. They moved back to Sioux Falls in 1971 and he worked for Stadum Construction.

His wife died July 20, 1975.

On Jan. 30, 1978, he married Penny (Borman) Harr in Slayton, Minn. They moved to Rock Rapids in 1981 where he worked for Cayel Craft several years, then for S&R; Manufacturing. Due to health reasons, he retired in 2002.

Survivors include his wife; five children, Vance Harkema of Sioux Falls, Keith Harkema of Baltic, S.D., Wade Harkema of Aurora, S.D., and Donie and Danie Harr, both of Rock Rapids; four grandchildren; two brothers, Raymond of West Fargo, N.D., and David of Sioux Falls, and four sisters, Mrs. Stan (Alice) Gillette and Mrs. Don (Marlene) Schlieman, both of Sioux Falls, Mrs. Jack (Violet) Sellers of DeBois, Pa., and Mrs. Duane (Evelyn) Beskow of Watertown, S.D.

He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife and an infant son, Shane Harkema.

Coba Bliek, 74
Larchwood, Iowa
November 27, 2004

Coba Bliek, 74, of Larchwood died Saturday, Nov. 27, 2004, at George Good Samaritan Center after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer's disease.

Services will be today (Wednesday, Dec. 1) at 10 a.m. at New Life Assembly of God Church, Inwood, with interment in Richland cemetery .

Coba Jacobsma was born July 24, 1930, in Rock Valley, the daughter of Bert and Hattie Jacobsma.

On Sept. 8, 1950, she married Arie Bliek. They farmed in the Larchwood area.

Survivors include her husband; two sons, Larry and Harlan, both of Larchwood; three daughters, Mrs. Ron (Donna) Bos of Inwood, Mrs. Russ (Cheryl) Borchardt of Sioux Falls, S.D., and Mrs. Joel (Connie) Pollema of Brandon, S.D.; 11 grandchildren; five brothers, Pete of Rock Valley, Gerrit, Bernie and Harold, all of Luverne, Minn., and Rob of Grand Rapids, Mich., and two sisters, Mrs. Martin (Katie) Postma of Rock Valley and Mrs. Ken (Lucy) Bolkema of Leota, Minn.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Dennis; one daughter, Sharon, and one sister, Jennie Groen.
