Clara I. Fiser, age 88 of Brooklyn, formerly of Marengo, died Tuesday morning, July 12, 2005 at Brooklyn Community Estates, Brooklyn, IA. following an extended illness. Funeral Services: 11:00 A.M. Saturday, July 16, 2005, Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo with Rev. Dianne Buswell officiating. Burial will be in the Marengo Cemetery. Friends may call after 9:00 A.M. Saturday until service time at the funeral home. A memorial fund has been established.
She is survived by her husband William of Brooklyn Community Estates, Brooklyn; 3 sisters, Opal Roller of Marengo and Dorothy Hohnstein and Anna McIlrath of Laguna Woods, CA; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, and two brothers, Clyde and Charles Fowler, Jr.
Clara Isabelle Fowler was born icon December 17, 1916 in Ozark, Arkansas, the daughter of Charles Alfred Fowler, Sr. and Beulah Belle Reynolds Fowler. She received her education in the Marengo schools and married William Fiser on February 8, 1937 at the Presbyterian Manse.
She was a homemaker.

Ernestine M. Gerner, age 94, died Tuesday evening, June 14, 2005 at the Marengo Memorial Hospital, following an extended illness. Funeral Services: 10:30 A.M. Friday, June 17, 2005 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Marengo with Pastor Douglas Morton officiating. Burial will be in the Marengo Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 P.M. Thursday, June 16, 2005 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. A memorial fund has been established.
She is survived by a granddaughter, Colleen Conrad and husband Mike of Marengo; a son-in-law, Darwin Huedepohl of Victor; and two sisters-in-law, Irene Jacobi of South Amana and Esther Meeks of Cedar Rapids. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Harry on February 19, 1971, a daughter, Phyllis Huedepohl on July 2, 1999, and two sisters, Lina Semer and Sue Miller.
Ernestine Marie Wittig was born icon January 10, 1911 in South Amana, the daughter of Alvin and Wilhelmina Baust Wittig. Wilhelmina died from childbirth complications, and consequently Ernestine and her sisters were raised by their father and step-mother Kathryn Spect Wittig. Ernestine received her education in the Amana and Iowa County schools. She married Harry Elmer Gerner on January 25, 1932 at the Lutheran Parsonage in Marengo. The couple farmed for many years in Iowa County. She was a homemaker and also worked at the Ox Yoke and Ronneburg restaurants until her husband died in 1971. Ernestine then spent her time managing the family farm. She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Marengo. Since 1999, Ernestine has made her home at the Marengo Memorial Hospital due to failing health.

Bernese L. York, age 102, formerly of Ladora and Cedar Rapids, died Wednesday, May 18, 2005 at Brookhaven Nursing Home, Brooklyn following brief illness. Private Family Graveside Services will be held Friday, May 20, 2005. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo is in charge of arrangements.
She is survived by a son, Harley and wife Vera of Ladora, two daughters, Kay Shaull and husband Kenneth of Otto, NC, and Aletha Green of Cedar Rapids; 16 grandchildren, and many great and great-great grandchildren. Also surviving is a daughter-in-law, Lois York of Ladora. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a daughter, Marjorie Kayrol a son, Edwin and two sisters, Elva Jones and Arlene Wooton.
Bernese Leola Beemer was born icon March 18, 1903 in Ladora, Iowa, the daughter of Floyd Beemer and Bertha Maudlin Beemer. She received her education in the Ladora schools. Bernese married Richard Dale York and the couple lived in Ladora for many years, where she worked at Wayne Shaull Grocery Store. Dale died January 28, 1948. Following her husband’s death, Bernese moved to Cedar Rapids, where she was employed at SunMart Groceries, in Cedar Rapids and Marion. Since 1997, she has made her home at Brookhaven Nursing home due to failing health.

Ruth Marie Olson, age 89, of Sacramento, CA, formerly of Marengo, died Sunday, May 1, 2005 at Sutter General Hospital in Sacramento. Funeral Services: 11:00 A.M. Saturday, May 7, 2005 at First Lutheran Church, Conroy with Rev. Jackie Tjarks officiating. Burial will be in First Lutheran Cemetery. Friends may call after 9:30 A.M. Saturday at the church. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo is in charge of arrangements.
She is survived by a son, John Robert Olson and wife Delores of Pollock Pines, CA, and a daughter, Rebecca K. Olson of Sacramento (Elk Grove), CA; two grandsons, Eric Olson of Denver and Ben Olson with the Peace Corp in Albania. In addition, she is survived by two sisters, Thelma Borg and husband Arnold of Cedar Rapids, and Ann Amosson of St. Cloud, MN; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Ruth Marie Olson was born icon January 14, 1916 in Norway, IA, the daughter of Ole S. and Stella T. Hage Olson. She graduated from Norway High School and Coe College, Cedar Rapids. She was an elementary school teacher, in Conroy, Ottumwa and Cedar Rapids. Ruth married Robert E. Olson on July 3, 1943 while he was stationed on the West Coast during World War II. Following the war, the couple lived in Marengo until the 1960’s, moving to Cedar Rapids, Los Angeles, Chicago and Oklahoma City. Ruth sold real estate while in Oklahoma City. Robert died on November 17, 1998. In 2000, Ruth moved to California to live with her daughter.
Ruth enjoyed playing bridge, traveling, antiques and spending time with her family and friends.

Lorraine Von Lienen, age 66 of Marengo, died Thursday, April 21, 2005 at the Rose Haven Nursing Home following an extended illness. Friends may call from 5 to 7 P.M. Sunday, April 24, 2005 at Kloster Funeral Home in Marengo. Private Family Services will be held on Monday. A memorial fund has been established.
Lorraine is survived by her husband, Leo “Pete”; two sons, Richard “Rick” of Cedar Rapids and Christopher of Iowa City; and a daughter-in-law, Stephanie Von Lienen of North Liberty; three grandchildren, Chase, Breanna and Elijah Von Lienen; and two sisters, Mary Barr and husband George of Blairstown and Sally Ollinger and husband Bernard of Vinton. She was preceded in death by her parents.
Lorraine Helen Eichler was born icon September 9, 1938 in Ladora, Iowa, the daughter of Edward and Evelyn Brown Eichler. She received her education in the Iowa County schools and graduated from Marengo High School in 1957. She married Leo “Pete” Von Lienen on February 2, 1962 in Dubuque, Iowa. Lorraine was a homemaker.

Veda G. Kanke, age 85, died Friday April 1, 2005 at the Marengo Memorial Hospital following an extended illness. Funeral Services: 10:00 A.M. Monday, April 4, 2005 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Marengo with Pastor Douglas Morton officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Blairstown. Friends may call from 4 to 8 P.M. Sunday, April 3, 2005 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. Memorials may be contributed to St. John’s Lutheran Preschool or Amenity Hospice.
She is survived by her son Wayne and wife Linda of Marengo, two grandchildren, Jock (Mandi) and Stacy Healey of Marengo; and 5 great-grandchildren, Stephanie, Katelin, Andrea, Tre and Lorenzo. She is also survived by three sisters, Ella Meeks of Marengo, Laura Frey of Dubuque and Cora Schoenfelder of Van Horne. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and two brothers, Lloyd and Clarence Furler.
Veda Gladys Furler was born icon October 11, 1919 in Van Horne, Iowa, the daughter of Emil and Minnie Webert Furler. She received her education in the Van Horne schools and married Myron F. Kanke on November 10, 1942 in Van Horne. He died in 1987. In 1992, Veda moved to Marengo, where she was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, the RSVP and was very active in the Marengo American Legion Auxiliary.

Raymond Joseph O’Brien, age 96, of Parnell, died Thursday morning, March 24, 2005 at the English Valley Care Center, North English following a sudden illness. Mass of Christian Burial: 10:30 A.M. Monday, March 28, 2005, St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Parnell with Fr. Pat Lumsden officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Parnell. Friends may call from 5 to 8 P.M. Sunday, March 27, 2005 at the church where there will be a Vigil Service at 7 P.M. A memorial fund has been established. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo is in charge of arrangements.
He is survived by a son, Edward “Eddie” O’Brien and wife Jean of Parnell, a daughter, Mary Jane O’Brien of Milwaukee, WI; 5 grandchildren, Katie and fiance’ Freddie Chapman of Piedmont, GA, John and Molly O’Brien of Parnell, and Eric and Aaron Johnson of Milwaukee, WI; nieces, nephews and countless friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Nelle on October 24, 1981, 2 brothers, Robert and Bert, and a sister, Agnes Moneypenny.
Raymond Joseph O’Brien was born icon on January 12, 1909 at Cosgrove, IA, the son of James and Mary Barry O’Brien. He moved to the farm a mile east of Parnell in 1920, which he later purchased. In 19541. He graduated from Parnell High School in 1927 and he married Nelle McGrory on February 20, 1939 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Brooklyn. He followed in his father’s footsteps and farmed alongside his brothers, for many years. He gained a reputation as a breeder of fine Angus cattle. He served on the Parnell School Board for 12 years, was instrumental in establishing the ASCS Office in Williamsburg and assisted with many church projects at St. Joseph’s where he was a member since 1920.

Terry E. Sloan, age 60 of Marengo died Saturday evening, March 12, 2005 at his home following a sudden illness. Friends may call from 4 to 8 P.M. Tuesday, March 15, 2005 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo where there will be a Time of Sharing at 7:30 P.M. Memorial Services and committal will be at a later date.
He is survived by 3 daughters, Annette Sloan and fiance’ Jeff Lockwood of Falling Waters, West Virginia, Tressa Scott and husband Kevin of Cedar Rapids, and Tara Sloan of Cedar Rapids; 2 grandsons, Cole Scott and Connor Thompson; his Mother, LaVaun Edwards of Belle Plaine; his step-mother, Marlene Sloan of Victor, two brothers, Zachary Sloan of Colon, NE, and Eric Sloan of Des Moines; two sisters, Faye Kimm of Blairstown, and Marjena Sloan of Grinnell; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father Eugene Sloan, and his stepfather, Robert Edwards.
Terry Eugene Sloan was born icon May 29, 1944 in Belle Plaine, IA the son of Eugene Dale Sloan and LaVaun Keller Sloan. He graduated from Victor High School in 1962. He was employed as a tool and die maker at Williamsburg Manufacturing in Williamsburg.
Terry was a member of the Sons of the American Legion and the Knights of Columbus.

Floyd W. Meyer, Jr., age 64, was called home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, March 2, 2005 at the Marengo Memorial Hospital following an extended illness. Funeral Services: 2:00 P.M. Saturday, March 5, 2005 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Marengo with Pastor Douglas Morton officiating. Burial will be in the Marengo Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 P.M. Friday, March 4, 2005 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. A memorial fund has been established.
He is survived by his wife, Marcella; a son Scott and wife Lisa of Williamsburg; a daughter, Susannah Rayas and husband Alex of El Paso, TX, six grandchildren, Joel Dronebarger, Skyler Meyer, Gramm Meyer, Sarah Rayas, Cashlee Rayas, and Stetson Rayas;; four brothers, Vernon of Conroy, Edward of Marengo, Richard of Parnell and Leonard of Conroy; and two sisters, Della Stevens of Deep River and Ruth Melsa of Marengo. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, David, Melvin and John in infancy and a daughter and son-in-law, Sarah and Gary Wetjen.
Floyd William Meyer was born icon March 8, 1940 in Iowa County, Iowa, the son of Floyd G. and Alice Mumm Meyer. He received his education in the Iowa County schools and married Marcella Meeks on September 30, 1960 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Marengo. He was employed by George Myers at the Phillips 66 station in South Amana for several years. From 1965 until 1990 he owned and operated Floyd’s DX in South Amana, which later was renamed Floyd’s Repair.
Floyd was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Marengo, and especially enjoyed dartball. His passion was classic cars and street rod shows, and he enjoyed participating in local parades.
