Robert L. “Bob” Brandon, Sr., age 75, died suddenly, Sunday afternoon, June 5, 2005 at his home in East Amana. Funeral Services: 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, June 8, 2005, Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo with Rev. Morris Hurd officiating. Burial will be in the Marengo Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 7 P.M. Tuesday, June 7, 2005 at the funeral home.
He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth; two sons, Robert Jr. and wife Mary Ellen of North English, and Jeff of Marengo, a daughter, Debbie Peters and husband Steve of Belle Plaine, four grandchildren, Doug, David, Michelle and Lisa; two brothers, Dean and Harold and three sisters, Helen Wilburn, Mary Wages, and Laura Still and husband Fred, all of Missouri. In addition he is survived by a brother-in-law, Dale White and wife Donna of Springville, Uncle John and Aunt Rosella, along with many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and a sister.
Robert Lewis Brandon was born icon May 2, 1930 in Sydney, Nebraska, the son of Earnest and Effie Lund Brandon. He attended school in the Eddyville, Iowa schools. He served in the Marine Corp, stationed in Hawaii as a military police during the Korean War. He married Elizabeth White on June 1, 1957 in Lancaster, MO. Robert was employed with the John Morrell Company in Ottumwa for 25 years. He then moved to the Amana area where he was employed by the Amana Society Farms from 1974 until 1992 when he retired.
Bob enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, mushroom hunting and spending time with his family and friends. He was a member of the Ottumwa American Legion Post #3.

Anthony “Andy” C. Moore, age 16, of South Amana, died Saturday morning, May 14, 2005, at the University Hospitals, Iowa City, after injuries sustained in an accident in Amana on Friday. Funeral services: 10:30 A.M, Wednesday, May 18, 2005, St. John’s Lutheran Church, rural Homestead with Rev. Wayne Woolery officiating. Burial will be in St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery. Friends may call from 1 to 8 P.M., Tuesday, May 17, 2005, St. John’s Lutheran Church, rural Homestead where there will be a presentation of Eagle Scout Court of Honor at 7:00 P.M. A memorial fund has been established. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo is in charge of the arrangements.
He is survived by his parents, Tim and Carol of South Amana; two sisters at home, Kathryn “Katie” and Meghan “Maggie”; paternal grandmother, Virginia Hammer, Coralville; maternal grandparents, Bill and Bonnie Eberhardt, San Antonio, TX; and “special” grandparents, Dale and Shirley Noyes, Victor. He was preceded in death by his step-grandfather, Kenneth Hammer.
Anthony Cameron Moore was born icon February 16, 1989 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the son of Shawn Timothy and Carole Nannette Eberhardt Moore. He received his early education at Lutheran Interparish School in Williamsburg and was a sophomore at Clear Creek Amana High School. He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church where he was active as a church usher and involved in the church choir, L.Y.F., and helped with special church music. Through school he was involved in the band, show choir, jazz band, pep band, academic decathlon, was a tutor for Math Counts and a volunteer at the middle school band and choir competition. Andy was also involved in Amana On-The-Hill at the Iowa State Fair, the Old Creamery Theatre, Boy Scouts in which he became and Eagle Scout in August of 2004, and was an honorary member of the Iowa County Cattlemen’s Association. He also worked at the Brick Haus and previously at Zuber’s Restaurant.
Because of his great love for his country, his stewardship to the outdoors, and his love of God and all mankind, for his project to become an Eagle Scout he chose to make upwards of 150 crosses for all the veterans buried at Koszta Cemetery, rural Marengo.

Viola Nieland, age 92 of Houston, TX, formerly of Marengo, died Wednesday evening, April 27, 2005 at Hermann Memorial Hospital in Houston from congestive heart failure. Funeral Services: 10:30 A.M. Friday, May 6, 2005 at the First United Methodist Church in Marengo with Rev. Morris Hurd officiating. Burial will be in International Cemetery, rural Luzerne, IA. Friends may call from 5 to 7 P.M. Thursday, May 5, 2005 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. Memorials may be contributed to First United Methodist Church or the Marengo Public Library Building Fund.
She is survived by a son, Robert B. Nieland and wife Andrea of Hickory, NC; a daughter, Jonel Ankrum and husband Charles of Missouri City, TX; five grandchildren, Christopher, Matthew and Melody Ankrum and David and Daniel Nieland and two great-grandchildren, Peyton and Morgan Ankrum.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Lester Nieland on March 13, 1982, two brothers, Guy and Tunis Wisgerhof, and four sisters, Nellie McMahon, JoAnn Muller, Areka Fehrman and Gertrude Paul.
Viola Wisgerhof was born icon August 1, 1912 in Kellogg, IA, the daughter of Cornelius and Gertie Van Woerkman Wisgerhof. She graduated from Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls and was employed as a grade school teacher in Marengo for over 25 years. Viola married Lester C. Nieland on December 20, 1936 in Laurel, IA.
She was a member of the PEO, National Honor Society, Kappa Delta Pi and Gold Key. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Marengo and was active in the United Methodist Women’s Association. Her favorite pastimes were reading and music.

Alice W. Simmons, on Tuesday, April 19, 2005 entered heaven to enjoy eternal life won for her through the death and resurrection of her savior, Jesus Christ. She died at Mercy Medical Center, Cedar Rapids.
Funeral services for Alice Simmons, 89, Cedar Rapids, formerly of Marengo, are at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 23, 2005 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Marengo with Rev. Doug Morton officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Blairstown. Friends may call after 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 23, 2005 at St. John’s Lutheran Church. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be sent to St. John’s Lutheran Church, Marengo or Lutheran Bible Translators. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo, is in charge of arrangements.
Alice was born icon July 12, 1915 the daughter of Joseph and Della Friese Dickenson in their rural Marengo home. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Martins Lutheran Church, rural Marengo. Alice married E. Owen Simmons November 28, 1935 at St. Martins Lutheran Church. She was a faithful and much loved Christian wife and mother.
She is survived by four children; Joseph (Mary) of Tucson, AZ, Joyce (William) Riley of Cedar Rapids, Elaine Simmons of Belle Plaine, and Dennis (Ruth) of Phoenix, AZ; 11 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild. Alice is also survived by a brother Arnold Dickenson of Rialto, CA and a sister Myrna Herzog of Holliston, MA. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Owen on September 21, 1998, and a sister Ferne Altenburg.

Lina Christina Rettig, age 90, died Thursday morning, February 2, 2006 at Colonial Manor Care Center, following a long illness with Alzheimer’s Disease. Funeral Services: 10:00 A.M. Monday, February 6, 2006 at the Middle Amana Community Church in Middle Amana with Elder Peter Hoehnle officiating. Burial will be in the Middle Amana Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 4 P.M. Sunday, February 5, 2006 at the Middle Amana Church. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo is in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include three children, Lawrence L. Rettig (Wilma) of South Amana, Bonnie J. Hertel (Stan) of Middle Amana, and Rosemary A. Houser (David) of Moatsville, West Virginia, and three grandchildren, Robin Rettig, Keegan Houser and Kaleigh Houser. Also surviving are a sister, Rose Leonhardt, a brother, Harry Leonhardt, three sisters-in-law, Elizabeth Parvin, Anne Leonhardt and Mary Leonhardt Schupanitz, and countless friends and neighbors. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard, her parents and a brother, Elmer Leonhardt.
Lina Christina Leonhardt was born icon February 25, 1915 in Middle Amana, the daughter of Ferdinand and Minnie Reihmann Leonhardt. She attended school in communal Amana until age 14, when she was assigned by the governing elders to work in one of Middle Amana’s communal kitchens. After the Amana Society abandoned communalism, she enrolled in and graduated from the Cedar Rapid’s Business College. For a number of years she worked in the Main Office of the new Amana Society Corporation. In later years, she served as Assistant Postmaster at the Middle Amana Post Office and as bookkeeper for the Amana Heritage Society. She married Leonard A. Rettig on February 18, 1939 at the Middle Amana Community Church. The couple remained in Middle Amana, where three children were born icon to this happy 66-year union. Leonard died March 20, 2005.
Lina was a beautiful lady, both in stature and in temperament. She was a gentle soul who made friends easily and who loved and cared for her family unconditionally. She was a member of the Amana Church Society, AARP, the Amana Heritage Society, and the Amana Arts Guild. She also participated in the Calico Investment Club and volunteered her time as a Campfire Girl leader.
Memorials may be contributed to the Amana Church Society, Amana Heritage Society or the charity of the donor’s choice.

Carl E. Graesser, age 81 died Wednesday morning, March 23, 2005 at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids, following a sudden illness. Funeral Services: 10:00 A.M. Friday, March 25, 2005 at the Middle Amana Church, Middle Amana with Elder Tony Berger officiating. Burial will be in the Middle Amana Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 6 P.M. Thursday, March 24, 2005 at the Middle Amana Church. A memorial fund has been established. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo is in charge of arrangements.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy, a son, Joel of Oxford; two daughters, Nancy Graesser of Oxford and Colleen Langreck and husband Kenneth of Marengo; 6 grandchildren, Dustin Langreck and wife Kathy of Blairstown, Shannon Langreck, Brooke Langreck and Brandi Langreck of Marengo and Jessica and Megan Graesser of Middle Amana. In addition, he is survived by two brothers, Ivan Graesser of Marion, and Robert Graesser and wife Darlene of West Amana and a sister, Ellen Patik of Cedar Rapids. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers in childhood.
Carl Ernest Graesser was born icon December 25, 1923 in West Amana, the son of Carl and Emilie Schoenfelder Graesser. He received his education in the West Amana School and attended Amana High School. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1943 to 1946. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1947 to 1951. Carl married Dorothy Trumpold on February 24, 1951 at Lowry Air Force Base in Denver, CO. When he returned to the Amanas, he was employed by Jake Selzer Construction in Fairfax for several years. He then worked as a carpenter for the Amana Builders for many years and then as a security guard at the Amana Refrigeration Plant, retiring in 1987. Following retirement, Carl and his wife worked at REC in Amana. He was a member of the Amana Church Society and enjoyed gardening and spending time with his grandchildren.

Melvin “Mel” Meier, age 70, died Saturday, March 12, 2005 at University of Iowa Hospitals, Iowa City following an extended illness. Funeral Services: 10:30 A.M. Tuesday, March 15, 2005, St. John’s Lutheran Church in Marengo with Pastor Douglas Morton officiating. Burial will be in the Marengo Cemetery with military honors. Friends may call from 4 to 8 P.M. Monday, March 14, 2005 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. Memorials may be contributed to St. John’s Elevator Fund or the St. John’s Agape Fund.
He is survived by his wife Jan; a son, Michael and wife Pat of Marengo, two daughters, Jane Fry and husband Randy of Marengo, and Jodi Garrett and husband Michael of Swisher; 6 grandchildren, Jeremy, Roxanne and Dustin Meier, Samantha, Natalie and Benjamin Fry; a brother, Dennis and wife Glenda of Marengo, and a sister Nellie Weih and husband Gene of Tipton. In addition, he is survived by a sister–in-law, Jan Meier of Marengo and a brother-in-law, Clifford Danielsen of Bettendorf and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Mardelle Danielsen and a brother, Allan in 2002.
Melvin Leonard Meier was born icon May 28, 1934 in Scott County, Iowa, the son of Leonard and Helen Reese Meier. He graduated from Wheatland High School in 1952. He served in the U.S. Marines from 1953 until 1957, attaining the rank of Sergeant. Mel married Janice M. Marks on October 22, 1955 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, in Bennett, IA. The couple lived in California during Mel’s time in the service. In 1965, the couple moved to Marengo where Mel worked at the Marengo Elevator for his brother, Allan. From 1976 until 1991 Mel owned and operated Meier Feed and Fertilizers. Most recently he sold seed for the Kruger Seed Company.
Mel was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Marengo, serving as and elder and on many boards. He was a member of the Marengo American Legion Post #76 for which he served as chaplain.

Alvin Donald Wyland, 77, of Williamsburg, died Friday, February 25 of heart failure at the Tucson Heart Hospital in Arizona. Funeral services: 10:30 A.M. Saturday, March 5, 2005 at the First Presbyterian Church, Williamsburg with Rev. James Stewart officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Williamsburg, with military honors. Friends may call from 4 to 8 P.M. Friday, March 4, 2005 at the church. Memorials may be contributed to the American Heart Association or the American Cancer Society in Alvin’s name. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo is in charge of arrangements.
Alvin was born icon in Kensington, Kansas on May 27, 1927 to John Donald Wyland and Marie Ann Norden Wyland. He attended primary school through 8th grade in Almena, Kansas. In 1941 his family moved to San Gabriel, California, in Los Angeles County. From there they moved to Fresno where Alvin was graduated from Fresno High School in June 1945. In February 1945, while World War Two was still in progress, he enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard. At that time the Coast Guard was an arm of the U.S. Navy. For training, Alvin was temporarily assigned to the U.S. Navy destroyer USS Haynsworth, DD700. Following that, he was assigned to the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Sebago, similar to a navy destroyer, where he served until discharged in May 1946.
On August 27, 1955 Alvin and Bonnie Lou Menzmer were married in Fresno. Alvin was graduated from the University of California at Berkeley in 1957 with a B.S. in Engineering. After graduation Alvin accepted employment with General Electric Company.
In April of 1980 Alvin and Bonnie were involved in an automobile accident; Bonnie did not survive. On February 12, 1983 he married Loretta Williams at the First Presbyterian Church in Williamsburg. Alvin practiced engineering for 33 years as a design engineer, retiring in 1990 from Amana Refrigeration, Inc. in Amana, Iowa.
As a young boy, Alvin took a five-dollar airplane ride at a local carnival after which he developed a love of airplanes, flight, and the skies that remained a part of him all his life. He kept and flew many small airplanes over the years and between 1970 and 1990, worked meticulously to build his own Starduster Too, an open-cockpit biplane, which he enjoyed flying for several years. Throughout his career and in retirement, he published technical and magazine articles and received ten patents for a variety of inventions. Alvin enjoyed Ham radio, painting, music, astronomy, historical and scientific reading, wildlife, thunderstorms, and time with his family. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather who remained involved and dedicated to the members of his family every day of his life.
Surviving Alvin are his wife Loretta; his three daughters, Lisa Marie Wyland of Silver Springs, MD, Nancy Gayle Newkirk and husband Ramon of Solon, IA, Janet Wyland Grondin and husband Patrick of Fairfax, VA; two stepchildren, Scott Dwight Williams and wife Robin of Williamsburg, IA, Peggy Swick and husband Bill of Cedar Rapids, IA; a brother, David Carl Wyland and wife Kathy of Morgan Hill, CA, and a sister, Jessie Marie Johnson of Sweet Home, OR. Alvin had eight grandchildren: Alex and Miles Newkirk, Joseph and Donald Grondin, Jennifer and Shanna Williams, and Michael and Katherine Swick, and a host of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Bonnie, a newborn son, Donald Scott Wyland, mother and father Marie and John Wyland, and his sister Alice Marie Grundt.

Olga M. Nagel, age 80 of Amana, died Tuesday, November 1, 2005 at the Marengo Memorial Hospital following an extended illness. Funeral Services: 10:00 A.M. Friday, November 4, 2005 at the Middle Amana Church with Elder Betsy Momany officiating. Burial will be in the High Amana Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 7 P.M. Thursday, November 3, 2005 at the Middle Amana Community Church. Memorials may be contributed to the Marengo Hospital Extended Care or the Amana Church Society. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo is in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include her husband George; a son Larry, and wife Kathleen of High Amana; two daughters, Sharon Rude and husband Bob of Coralville and Mary Lou Reihmann and husband Bob of Denver, CO; five grandchildren, John Nagel, Karl and Anna Reihmann and Katy and Nicholas Rude; and a sister Lottie Janesovsky of Cedar Rapids. She was preceded in death by her parents, and three sisters, Louise Vomacka, Frannie Andrlik, and Mimi Sloup.
Olga Mary Sloup was born icon August 17, 1925 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the daughter of Thomas and Mary Shimek Sloup. She received her education in the Cedar Rapids schools, graduating from Wilson High School in 1944. Following graduation, she was employed at the People’s Bank in Cedar Rapids. Olga married George Nagel on June 12, 1955 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Besides being a homemaker, Olga worked at Merchants Bank, the Amana Woolen Mills and later at the Barn Restaurant. She loved her husband and family and her cats. She enjoyed gardening and watching the birds and nature. She produced fine needlework, evidence of her Czech heritage. She always made the best with what they had. She was a member of the Amana Church, and the ZCBJ Lodge #13 in Cedar Rapids.
