William G. Vincent, 82, of Iowa City, died Friday evening, December 21, 2001, at the Iowa City Rehabilitation & Health Care Center following a short illness. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, December 24, 2001, at the Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, 605 Kirkwood Avenue, Iowa City, with the Reverend Robert Dean, officiating. Friends may call after 10:00 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. Interment will be private at Memory Gardens Cemetery, Iowa City. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Iowa City or the Iowa City Rehabilitation & Health Care Center. William G. Vincent was born icon June 17, 1919 in West Branch, Iowa, the son of James T. and Helen (Selby) Vincent. He was united in marriage to Carol M. Raymond on April 30, 1944 in West Branch, Iowa. William worked for Watson Bros. Trucking for many years and then was associated with Bob and Henry’s Phillips 66 Station. He later was employed in maintenance at the University of Iowa, retiring in 1979. He enjoyed golfing, square-dancing and playing bridge, he was an avid train buff and enjoyed camping, traveling and attending Holiday Rambler Camping Rally’s. He and his wife both enjoyed wintering in Texas many years, Mr.Vincent is survived by two daughters; Marilyn Milder and her husband, Leonard of Solon, Dixie Fowler and her husband, Richard of Cedar Rapids, one son, Steve Vincent and his wife, Rosemary of Iowa City, fourteen grandchildren and twenty-eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, an infant son, two brothers and one sister.

Bob "Red" Ihrig

Bob ‘Red’ Ihrig, 74, of 1123 W. Benton Street died at his home Monday, December 31, 2001 following a short illness. Funeral Services will be held Friday, January 4, 2002 at 11AM at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service with the Rev. Judy Gingerich officiating. Burial will be at Memory Gardens Cemetery. Friends may call from 3-8 PM Thursday. A memorial fund has been established. Mr. Ihrig was born icon December 19, 1927 in Wellman, Iowa, the son of Walter and Laura Powell Ihrig. He married Anita J. Miller on May 1, 1955 in Iowa City. Red was a machine operator for many years with H.P.Smith. Prior to that, he had worked with Railway Express and Protein Blenders. Survivors include his wife Anita, Two sons, Bobby Ihrig and his wife Becky of Riverside Randy Ihrig of Iowa City One daughter, Cheryl Chalupa and her husband Jarrod of Washington Four Grandchildren Kyle Ihrig, Cody and Jacy Chalupa and Amber Ihrig. He was preceded in death by one brother, Francis Merle and one sister Arleen McGlumphrey

Charles Teague

Charles A. Teague, age 93, of 1500 1st Avenue North in Coralville and formerly of 3913 West Overlook Road in Iowa City, died Monday, December 17, 2001 at Greenwood Manor in Iowa City on Monday, December 17, 2001 from complications of pneumonia. There will be no visitation or services. His body has been cremated. Burial of cremains will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery in Iowa City. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Camp Courageous. Charles was born icon August 25, 1908 in Greenville, Tennessee, the son of William & Molly Brumley Teague. Charles was raised in Greenville and has lived in Iowa City for over 60 years. He graduated from Iowa City High School. He received military training in Columbia, Missouri and served as a Machinist’s Mate, First Class in the United States Navy during World War II. Charles owned & operated Strub’s Welding & Repair Shop in Iowa City for 25 years. Charles was united in marriage to Marguerite Tehle on August 25, 1935 in Coralville, Iowa. He was a member of Iowa City Moose Lodge #1096. Charles is survived by his wife Marguerite of Coralville and several nieces and nephews including Beverly Rook of Boulder, Colorado. He was preceded in death by his parents and three sisters, Edith Slade, Mary Walker & Geneva Bryant.

Alexis Hope Schroeder

Alexis Hope Schroeder, 10 day old daughter of Curt and Jill Schroeder, 30 Vixen Court, North Liberty died Tuesday, December 17, 2001 at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Family Graveside Services will be held Thursday at Ridgewood Cemetery, North Liberty with the Rev. Chuck Kelsey officiating. Memorial may be directed to the Neo-natal Intensive Care Unit, UIHC c/o University of Iowa Foundation, 1 West Park Road, Iowa City, Iowa 52242 Arrangements are with Lensing Oak Hill, Coralville, Iowa Alexis was born icon December 7, 2001, the daughter of Curt and Jill Ahlers Schroeder. She is survived by her parents and her twin sister, Madison Grace Maternal Grandparents, Jack and Judy Ahlers of LeClaire, Iowa Paternal Grandparents, Ron and Georgie Schroeder of Bettendorf, Iowa Great Grandparents, Andrew and Dorothy Neilson of LeClaire, Iowa Lowell and Ella Ahlers and Jeannette Kapinski, all of Bettendorf She was preceded by paternal great grandparents, George Kapinski and Florence and Hugo Schroeder.

Vera Hurr

Vera E. Hurr, 90, formerly of 320 S. Dubuque Street died Monday, December 24, 2001 at Riverbend Care Center in Muscatine, Iowa following an extended illness. Graveside Services will be held Thursday, December 27, 2001 at 11AM at Memory Gardens Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Church of the Nazarene. Arrangements are with Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service. Born May 27, 1911 in Kansas City, Kansas, she was the daughter of Harvey and Nora McCorcle Adams. She was married to Harold F. Hurr on January 29, 1927 . Vera had resided in Iowa City since 1952. She was a line worker at Owens Brush for seventeen years, retiring in 1976. Prior to that she worked at Kresge’s. She was a member of the Church of the Nazarene, where she had done volunteer work. Survivors include five sons: Donald Hurr and his wife Bonnie of Hobart, Indiana, Earl Dale Hurr of Kalona, Harold Hurr Jr., Ronald Hurr of Florida, Jim Hurr of LaSalle, Illinois, Shirley Hurr, and Two Sisters and Three Brothers.

Emilie Rubright

Emilie JoAnn Rubright, 64, of 3742 Forest Gate Drive, died Friday, December 21, 2001, at Mercy Hospital of cancer. Mrs. Rubright was born icon February 17, 1937, in Indianapolis, IN, to Kenneth and LaVerne (Freeman) Kohlstaedt. She graduated in 1958 from DePauw University with a B. A. degree in English and attended the University of Missouri School of Journalism. On August 29, 1959, she married Dr. William Campbell Rubright in Indianapolis. She lived in Kansas City, MO, Chicago, IL, and Fort Polk, LA while her husband completed his dental and graduate training and Army obligations. Mrs. Rubright moved with her husband to Iowa City in 1967 when he joined the faculty of the College of Dentistry at the University of Iowa. She was Managing Editor and Co-Editor of The Iowa Dental Bulletin, the alumni magazine of the College of Dentistry, from 1974 to 1982. She served as Promotion Director for the Sycamore Mall Merchants Association from 1974 to 1982. Mrs. Rubright presided over the growth of the Mercy Hospital Foundation where she was Development Coordinator and later, also President of the Foundation. She was at Mercy from 1984 until her retirement in 1996. During her tenure as Development Coordinator, the Foundation established the Festival of Trees and the annual Love Lights program. Mrs. Rubright made outstanding contributions to the University and the Iowa City communities. Her civic contributions include her work as President of the Board of Directors of the Iowa City-Coralville Convention Bureau, board member of the Iowa City Chamber of Commerce and a Charter Member of the Chamber Ambassadors. Long interested in community health issues, Mrs.Rubright was a past member of the board of the Mid-Eastern Iowa Mental Health Center. For the past five years, she was a member of the board of the Visiting Nurses Association; she was vice-president of the board for the last two years and was elected to be president for the coming year. As a 33-year member of Project Green, Mrs. Rubright helped change the Iowa City landscape. She was part of the core leadership of Project Green since its inception in 1968. She was co-chair of the Steering Committee for seventeen years. As the public voice for Project Green, she handled publicity in addition to writing many articles about Iowa City's finest gardens and public green spaces. For the past five years, Mrs. Rubright was co-chair of the Garden Fair and Plant Sale at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. She worked on the College Green Park project, landscaping for school grounds, and the reestablishment of Gretchen Harshbarger's original Iowa Avenue plantings. A supporter and patron of the arts at the University and in Iowa City, Mrs. Rubright was one of the original docents at the UI Museum of Art. She was a current board member of the Hancher Guild. She was also a member of the Nineteenth Century Club, a study group, and a University Club book group. Mrs. Rubright was a past president of the Noon Optimist Club and an active member of the Altrusa Club and P.E.O. Chapter HI. A member of the founding chapter of Alpha Chi Omega at DePauw, she was past president of the House Corporation for the University of Iowa chapter of the sorority. Survivors include her Husband, Dr. William, her son and his wife, David and Jutta Rubright of Solon, her daughter and her husband, Diane Rubright and Robi Chakraborty of Minneapolis, MN; her sister Katie Kohlstaedt Laos of Almont, CO; one niece, Ingrid Laos Rochniak of Woodbridge, CT and one nephew, Jon Carter Laos of San Francisco, CA. Memorials may be made to the Mercy Hospital Foundation, 500 East Market Street, Iowa City, IA 52245 or Project Green in care of Treasurer Janet Maas, 321 MacBride Drive, Iowa City, IA 52246. Funeral Services will be Monday, December 24, 2001 at 10AM at First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. David Johnson officiating. Burial will be at Oakland Cemetery. Friends may call Sunday from 2-6PM at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service. A Memorial Service will also be held Sunday, January 6, 2002 at 2PM at First Presbyterian Church service will be held at a later date.

William "Bill" Kelly

William “Bill” J. Kelly, 76, of 1108 Sunset Street, Iowa City, died Tuesday morning, December 25, 2001, at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics. Funeral Services will be held at 1PM, Friday, December 28, 2001 at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, 605 Kirkwood Avenue, Iowa City, with the Reverend Robert Welsh officiating. Burial with Military Rites will be in Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery, Cedar Rapids. The family will greet friends after noon on Friday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Iowa City Senior Center or the Kidney Foundation. A Memorial Service will also be held at 10AM on December 31, 2001 at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery, Cedar Rapids. William Kelly was born icon October 9, 1925 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the son of John Leland and Loretta Mae (Barker) Kelly. William attended Cor College, where he was a cheerleader, and the University of Iowa. He received his BA in business from Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia. He served in the United States Army as a combat medic during WWII, serving both in the Pacific and European Theaters. He served in active and reserve duty for 30 years, retiring as a Colonel. He was united in marriage to Betty Nolting on June 17, 1949 in Rock Island, Illinois. Bill was employed by the United States Government Defense Logistics Agency as a production director, retiring in 1987.For many years William and his wife resided in Cedar Rapids where he was active as a leader for the Boy Scouts, having received Silver Beaver Award and Scout of the Year, he was a regional officer for Tau Kappa Epsilon, was a member of Alpha Phi Omega service fraternity.Mr. Kelly had been a state and chapter president of the Reserve Officers Association. In 1977 they moved to Iowa City where he was a past president of the Johnson County Chapter of AARP, had been a member of fifty-five Alive, was an assistant state coordinator for the Senior Drivers Refresher Course, past chair for the Johnson County Task Force for Seniors, wasa member of the task force for Heritage Area Agency Advisory Council, served on the advisory council, State of Iowa, Department of Elder Affairs, Johnson County delegate to Older Iowa Legislature serving five terms, State Director of the Iowa Aging Coalition, life member of the VFW, a member of the American Legion, was appointed to Iowa City Senior Center Commission and was a ham radio operator with call signal, WAOSXG. Bill is survived by his wife, Betty of Iowa City, his daughter, Katherine “Kathea” Kelly of Iowa City, two sons; Kevin Kelly of Marion and his daughter, Melissa of Sacramento, California and Dr. Kristopher Kelly and his wife, Kimberly of Mason City and their children, Ensign Charles Kelly, USS Tucson, Pearl Harbor, Benjamin and Michelle both of Mason City, two brothers, Michael Kelly of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Patrick Kelly and his wife, Mary of Des Moines. One uncle, Thomas Kelly of Cedar Rapids and one aunt, Mary Kelly of Marion. He was preceded in death by his parents and one son, Keenan.

Ruth Barbara

Barbara J. Ruth, age 55, of 3316 Shamrock Drive in Iowa City, died suddenly Wednesday, December 19, 2001 at her home. Services will be held Saturday at 10:00 am at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service in Iowa City with Reverend Dee Lundberg officiating. Friends may call Friday from 2:30 – 8:00 pm at the funeral home. Following the service, Barbara’s body will be cremated. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorials be directed to the Barbara Ruth Memorial Fund – to benefit Barbara’s favorite charities. She was born icon August 5, 1946 in Sioux Rapids, Iowa, the daughter of Kenneth & Grace Poitevin Cate. She graduated from Sioux Rapids High School in 1964 and then attended Cornell College, studying vocal music. Barbara worked for many years at Procter & Gamble. She was united in marriage to Ronald Ruth on December 30, 1977 at Faith United Church in Iowa City. Barbara was a very active member of Faith United Church of Christ, serving on church council and numerous other committee’s, including time serving as a Sunday school teacher, pianist and substitute secretary. She was also instrumental in the success of Vacation Bible School. Barbara assisted in serving the free lunch program at the Wesley House and as a volunteer for the Festival of Tree’s. She is survived by her husband Ron of Iowa City; two sons, John Ruth & his wife Valerie of Clarendon Hills, Illinois and Joe Ruth & his wife Becky of Longmont, Colorado; one sister, Harriet Leitch & her husband Duane of Des Moines; one brother, David Cate of Prescott, Arizona; two grandsons, Max & Perrin; 1 nephew, Justin Leitch of Iowa City; aunts, Frances Poitevin of Woodbine, Ferne Sharp & her husband Wayne of Denison, and Lois Olsen of Florida; brother in law, Terry Ruth & his wife Karen of Lafayette, Colorado and her mother in law, Marie Ruth of Kalona. Barbara was preceded in death by her parents & her grandparents.

Thomas Finnegan

Thomas J. Finnegan, 73, of 932 Cottonwood Avenue, died Tuesday, December 11, 2001, at his home following a brief illness. Mr. Finnegan was born icon January 27, 1928, in What Cheer, Iowa, the son of John and Ellen Lenaghan Finnegan. He married Alice Sueppel on June 29, 1957, at St. Mary’s Church in Iowa City. He was a graduate of Parnell High School and was a Corporal in the United States Army. He served in the Korean Conflict and received the Combat Infantrymans Badge, the Korean Service Medal and the Bronze Service Star. Thomas had been employed by the City of Iowa City in the Parks Department for over 32 years. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and a past member of the Knights of Columbus Marquette Council 842. He was an avid L.A. Dodger and Iowa Hawkeye Fan. He is survived by his wife, Alice; four children, Barb Tang of Iowa City, Tom Jr. (ToJo) Finnegan and his wife Patti of Eldridge, Bob Finnegan and his wife Jeanie of West Branch, and Katie Ryan and her husband Tim of Atalissa; ten grandchildren, Aaron, Chris and Tony Tang, Darby, Rachael and Katie Finnegan, Austin, Ashley and Drew Finnegan, and Allison Ryan; four sisters, Sr. Marie Finnegan, CHM of Davenport, Margaret Swick of Blairstown, Irene Bergen and Ione Lawrence, both of Cedar Rapids; two brothers, Vincent Finnegan of Williamsburg and Terry Finnegan of Parnell; two brothers-in-law, John Kempf of Cedar Rapids and Eugene Bud South of Williamsburg, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, and two sisters.
