Kery Beck

Davenport, Iowa
Kery K. Beck, 35, a resident of Davenport, died unexpectedly Tuesday, September 11, 2012 at Genesis Medical Center, West Central Park, following a sudden illness.
Funeral services to celebrate Kery's life will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, September 14, 2012, in the All Faith Chapel at Halligan McCabe DeVries Funeral Home, 614 Main Street, Davenport. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Davenport. Visitation will be today (Thursday) from 3:00 until 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. There will be additional visitation on Friday at the funeral home from 10:00 a.m. until the service time.
Kery K. Beck was born icon on September 21, 1976 in Davenport, a son of Jack Gilbert and Judith Karen (Humphreys) Beck. He graduated from Central High School in 1995 and earned his associates degree from Scott Community College.
Kery had an infectious personality which would light up a room and make everyone smile. This served him well during his career as a bartender; he turned many a stranger into a friend and loyal customer.
He was a diehard Cubs fan, loved soccer and was a Pearl Jam fan.
Memorials may be made to the family.
Those left to honor Kery's memory are his sister, Jodi Beck, brothers, Kris (Pratiabha) Beck, and Erik Beck; his nieces who adored him, Heather and Alexandrea; his best friend and confidants, Josie Kausal and Sasha Rowland; his honorary mother, Donna Siebert; aunts, uncles, cousins, and all of his friends and co-workers who were like family to him; plus his dear canine companions, Addison, Riley, and Lilly.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Lisa, in infancy.

Mr. Nathan W. Bedford
September 21, 1978 - January 05, 2003
Nathan W. Bedford, 24 of 2871 Irving Avenue died suddenly Saturday, January 5, 2003, at the West High School Football field.
Funeral services will be on Wednesday 11:00am at Parkview Evangelical Free Church. Friends may call on Tuesday from 3:00 to 8:00pm at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service, Iowa City. Memorials may be directed to the Nathan W. Bedford Memorial Fund.
Nathan was born icon September 21, 1978, the son of Barry and Roxianne Hick Bedford in Iowa City, Iowa. He was a West High graduate and he graduated from the University of Iowa. On March 11, 2000, he was united in marriage to Nichole Butters.
Nathan was an excellent hardworking student; he was a member of the National Honor Society. He received a Leadership Award from Hills Bank. He was a member of Good News Bible Church where he also taught Sunday school. Nathan was the coach of the Iowa City girl’s softball and basketball teams. He worked for the University of Iowa as a Research Assistant. He also was a Reserve Deputy Sheriff with the Johnson County Sheriff's department, which was a great joy of his. His greatest love was his family and his dogs. Nathan loved life and was busy enjoying it. He will be greatly missed by his family and his friends.
He is survived by his wife, Nichole Bedford of Iowa City, Iowa; one daughter, Alyssa Bedford of Iowa City, Iowa; his parents, Barry and Roxie Bedford of Coralville, Iowa; twin brother and sister, Justin Bedford of Coralville, Iowa, and Kirsten Bedford of Iowa City, Iowa; mother-in-law, Carol Butters of Iowa City, Iowa; father-in-law, Boyd Butters and his wife Marcia of Central City, Iowa; grandparents, Warren and Colleen Bedford of West Des Moines and Anna Hick of Ankeny, Iowa.

Roy Sedivec

Roy A. Sedivec, 73, of Iowa City, died Thursday, January 3, 2002 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City following complications of lung cancer. Funeral services will be held Monday at 1:00 pm at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service in Iowa City, Friends may call Sunday from 6:00 – 8:00 pm at the funeral home. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery in Iowa City. Memorials may be directed to Systems Unlimited. Roy was born icon August 8, 1928 in Iowa City, the son of Carl Charles “Charlie” & Maud Stafford Sedivec. He was united in marriage to Alice Smith Brown on January 6, 1951 in Iowa City. Roy was a truck driver for Iowa City Transfer & Storage for over 23 years, retiring in 1988. He was a lifelong Iowa City resident. He served as a Corporal in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict. He enjoyed fishing and model railroading and was a member of Teamsters Local #238. Survivors include: Mother: Maud Sedivec of Coralville Daughters: Klarene Cook & her husband Sidney of Mechanicsville Korrene Greenwald of Iowa City Donna Peer & her husband Larry of Kalona Joanne Corbett & her husband Mike of St. Cloud, Minnesota Sons: Richard Sedivec of Iowa City David Sedivec of New Hampton, Iowa John Sedivec of Tiffin Brother: Charles Edward “Ed” Sedivec & his wife Tina of Iowa City 20 Grandchildren 16 Great Grandchildren 6 Great-Great Grandchildren Roy was preceded in death by his father, his wife Alice and an infant son, Thomas.

Richard "Dick" Corcoran

Richard Thomas (“Dick”) Corcoran, 82, of 21 Ashwood Drive, Iowa City, died Monday, Dec. 31, 2001, in his home. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, January 7, 2002 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Iowa City. The Rev. Kenneth Kuntz will officiate. Burial with military rites provided by local military organizations will be in St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Iowa City. Friends may call from 4 -7PM Sunday at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service, where a Parish Vigil and Remembrance Service will be held at 7PM Sunday. A reception will follow burial services at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Iowa City Hospice. Mr. Corcoran was born icon Sept. 7, 1919 in Rock Rapids, Iowa, to Dr. Louis Leonard and Myrtle Early Corcoran. In 1937 he graduated from Central Lyon High School, where he was an honor student, a member of the glee club and captain of the boys varsity basketball team. He attended Creighton University and after service in the U.S. Army during World War II, completed his studies at the University of Iowa. He married Margaret Josephine (“Marge”) O’Connor in Iowa City on Aug. 16, 1944. He worked at Alden’s department store, St. Clair Johnson men’s store and was an independent agent for Prudential, Franklin Life and several other insurance companies. He and his wife owned and operated The Shamrock tavern at 525 S. Gilbert St. in Iowa City from 1971 until their retirement in 1983, when they sold the business and it became Fitzpatrick’s. He was a past president of the Regina High School Booster Club and a 58-year member of St. Mary’s Church, where for many years he sang in the choir and was an usher, the Elks Club and the Friends of the Iowa City Public Library. He was a member and past grand knight of Knights of Columbus Council 842 and a member of Bishop Cosgrove Assembly, 4th Degree of the Knights of Columbus. He was affiliated with Iowa City Hospice from 1989 until his death, serving 12 years as a volunteer and as a board member from 1996-2001. In 1996 he received the Helen L. Zerwas Award for outstanding service as a volunteer. In 1997 he founded The Friends of Hospice and in 2001, served as honorary chairman of the Hospice Walk for Dignity. He was on the board of the Johnson County Unit of the American Cancer Society from 1990-2000. He was a member and 1994 president of the Golden K. Club of Kiwanis International; a life member of the Disabled Veterans of America and the UI Alumni Association; and a member of the Iowa City I-Club. He served on the Johnson County Compensation Commission from 1982 until his death. Survivors include a son and his wife, Tom and Joanna Corcoran of Iowa City; two daughters and their husbands, Kate Corcoran and Lars Hill of Iowa City and Jayne and Dr. Blaine Thomas of Hannibal, Mo.; a granddaughter and her husband, Anne and Dr. Donald Peterson, of Brooklyn, N.Y. and grandchildren Trisha Thomas of Omaha, Neb., Megan Corcoran of Taegu, South Korea, Elizabeth Hill of Olympia, Wash., and Alexander Hill of Iowa City; three great-grandchildren, Thomas and Nicholas Vivero both of Omaha, Neb., and Zachary Peterson, of Brooklyn, N.Y.; nine nieces and six nephews. His parents, his wife, a sister, Katherine, two brothers, Louis and Thomas, and a nephew Michael died earlier.

Mitchell J. "Mitch" Hall

Mitchell J. “Mitch” Hall, 50, of 65 Heritage Drive in North Liberty, died Tuesday, January 1, 2002 at University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics in Iowa City after a lengthy illness. Services will be held graveside on Friday at 11:00 am at Ridgewood Cemetery in North Liberty with Reverend Nancy English officiating. Friends may call Friday from 9:00 – 10:30 am at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service in Iowa City. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be directed to the Mitchell Hall Memorial Fund. Mitchell was born icon October 8, 1951 in Jefferson, Iowa, the son of Melvin & Shirley Allan Hall. He was raised in Guthrie Center and later graduated from East Des Moines High School. Mitchell married Janice Kono on December 13, 1975 in Newton, Iowa. He moved to the Iowa City area in 1974 and has lived in North Liberty since 1978. He worked as an auto detailer at Hartwig Motors in Iowa City. Mitchell was also a volunteer at University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics. Survivors include: His wife: Janice of North Liberty Son: Gary Slauson & his wife Chris of Iowa City Daughter: Denise Schalla & her husband Scott of North Liberty Father & Mother In Law: Gerald & Abbie Kono of Newton Mother: Shirley Bentz of Des Moines Sister: Nancy Ryan & her husband Dennis of Des Moines Brother In Law: Fred Kono & his wife Jean of Davenport Sisters In Law: Ruth Moore and Jo Kono, both of Newton Grandsons: Aaron, Tanner & Tyler Two Nieces & 4 Nephews He was preceded in death by his father, his grandparents and one uncle.

Francis X. White

Francis X. White, 92, of 805 8th Avenue, Coralville, died Thursday, December 27, 2001 at his home following a short illness. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, January 5, 2001 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Iowa City, with the Reverend James Vrba, officiating. Burial will be in the North English Cemetery, North English, Iowa. Friends may call after 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the church. Lensing’s Oak Hill in Coralville is in charge of the arrangements. Memorials may be made to Walter Johnson American Legion Post #721 in Coralville or the charity of your choice. Francis X. White was born icon August 21, 1909 in Eldora, Iowa, the son of Francis X. and Louise (Wolfe) White, Sr. He attended Iowa State University, the University of Iowa and later received his bachelor of arts at Loras College in Dubuque. He served in the United States Navy during WWII. He was united in marriage to Jeanne Mahannah on April 26, 1946 in Iowa County. They moved to Coralville in 1951 and he was employed at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, serving as Chief of Industrial Therapy for twenty-five years, and then Chief of Building and Grounds, retiring in 1985. He was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, the Walter Johnson American Legion Post #721 in Coralville and had been a member of the Knights of Columbus. Francis is survived by his sister, Leocadia Klein of Decatur, Georgia and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, five brothers and four sisters.

Marie J. Stebral

Marie J. Stebral, 89, formerly of Capitol House Apartments in Iowa City, died Saturday, January 5, 2002 at the Lone Tree Care Center after a lingering illness. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday at 10:00 am at St. Patrick Catholic Church with Reverend James Vrba officiating. Friends may call Monday from 4:00 to 7:00 pm at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service in Iowa City. A rosary will be recited at 7:00 pm. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery in Iowa City. Memorials may be directed to the Marie Stebral Memorial Fund. Marie was born icon August 31, 1912 in Cosgrove, Iowa, the daughter of Thomas & Nellie King Donahue. She attended schools in the Cosgrove area. She was united in marriage to Frank Stebral June 26, 1935 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Iowa City. Marie was a homemaker and also worked as a housekeeper at the Congress Inn and at the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity at the University of Iowa. The couple farmed in the Newport area until moving to Iowa City in 1980. She was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church. Survivors include: one daughter: Margaret Goering & her husband Richard of Iowa City three sons: Jim Stebral & his wife Virginia of Solon Bill Stebral & his wife Judy of Lone Tree Paul Stebral & his wife Mary Jean of Newport two brothers: Leo Donahue of Cedar Rapids Father Paul Donahue of Davenport eight grandsons nine great-grandchildren several nieces, nephews and grand nieces & nephews Marie was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Frank in 1984, an infant sister Cecilia, one sister Margaret Kabela and one brother Frank Donahue.

Ron Ameche

Ron Ameche, 66, of Homestead, Iowa, formerly of Iowa City, died Wednesday, January 2, 2001 at Marengo Hospital. Memorial Mass will be at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, January 5, at St. Thomas More Church in Iowa City with Father Walter Helms and Father David Hitch officiating. The family will greet friends at the church beginning at 10:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Ron Ameche Memorial Fund. Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service in Iowa City is in charge of arrangements. Mr. Ameche was born icon December 30, 1935 in Chicago, Illinois, the son of Dominic and Honore Prendergast Ameche. He served in the Navy in the 1950’s and then attended Loras College. He had been a restaurateur since the mid-1970s in Cedar Rapids and Iowa City, and owned The Pumpernickel, Ron Ameche’s and The Lighthouse. He managed the restaurant at the University Athletic Club and at numerous country clubs, including the Elmcrest Country Club in Cedar Rapids. Most recently, he was employed at Zuber’s in Homestead. Mr. Ameche was active in the Iowa City community for many years. Among other things, he was an active supporter of West High’s music, athletic and other programs. Survivors include: three brothers: Don and his wife Carol Ameche of Scottsdale, Arizona, Tom and his wife Pat Ameche of Lexington, Kentucky, and Larry and his wife Marilyn Ameche of Overland Park, Kansas; two sisters: Bonnie Ameche of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida and Connie Ameche of Fredricksburg, Virginia; eleven nieces and nephews; his former wife, Mary Burmeister-Ameche of Iowa City and step-children, Ann Burmeister of Burlington, Vermont and Paul Burmeister of Iowa City.

Darrell Kuenster

Darrell J. Kuenster, 69, of 320 E. Washington Street, Iowa City, died Sunday, December 23, 2001 at Mercy Hospital following a lengthy illness. Funeral Mass will be celebrated will be at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, December 29, 2001, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Iowa City, with the Reverend James Vrba officiating. Burial with military rites provided by local military organizations will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Iowa City. Friends may call from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. Friday at the funeral home where there will be a 7:00 p.m. Parish Vigil Service. Memorials may be directed to Iowa City Hospice. Darrell J. Kuenster was born icon February 19, 1932 in Cassville, Wisconsin, the son of Carl and Lillian (Kirschbaum) Kuenster. He was raised in Cassville, Wisconsin and moved to Iowa City in 1948. He was united in marriage to Patricia Rutherford in September, 1951 in Iowa City. He served in the United States Army from 1952 until 1954. Darrell worked as a tree trimmer for Asplundh until 1966 when he became employed with the City of Iowa City in the sanitation and later the parking division. He was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church and a lifetime member of the VFW. Darrell is survived by his daughter, Theresa Jay and her husband, Steve of Boone, Iowa, four sons, Rod Kuenster and his wife, Margaret “Marnie”, Jim Kuenster and his wife, Margaret “Peg”, all of Iowa City, Al Kuenster and his wife, Jackie of Las Vegas, Nevada, Jeff Kuenster of Glenwood Springs, Colorado. One brother, Norman “Mick” Kuenster and his wife, Maisie of Iowa City Fourteen grandchildren and12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia, his parents, Carl and Lillian and one brother, Lorraine
