Matthew J. Eckermann, 82, of 2004 20th Avenue Place in Coralville, died Saturday evening, June 22, 2002, at University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics following a short illness. Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, June 26, 2002, at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Cosgrove, with the Reverend Ed Dunn officiating. Burial will be in St. Peter’s Cemetery in Cosgrove. Friends may call at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, 605 Kirkwood Avenue in Iowa City on Tuesday from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. where there will be a Catholic Foresters rosary at 6:00 p.m. and a parish vigil service at 7:00 p.m.. Friends may also call Wednesday morning at the church from 10:00am until 11:00am. Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice. Matthew J. Eckermann was born icon March 21, 1920 in Emerson, Nebraska, the son of Charles E. and Genevieve (Norris) Eckermann. He grew up and attended schools in Emerson and moved with his family to Cosgrove in 1937. He studied nursing for a time at Kirkwood Community College. Matthew was a farmer in the Cosgrove area for many years until retiring due to a disability. He made his home in the Coralville area for many years. He was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Cosgrove & St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Iowa City and a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters. He was a 4H leader for over twenty years, served on the State Care Review Board Committee and the Volunteer Task Force of Johnson County. Matthew is survived by two sisters; Judy Conner of Coralville, Geraldine Downes of Oxford and one brother, Louis Eckermann & his wife Imelda of Cosgrove, 20 nieces and nephews and many great and great-great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, John & Charles Eugene.

Elaine I. (Kval) Hovet

Services will be held at:
Visitation times are:
Elaine I. (Kval) Hovet, 67, of 1427 Oakcrest in Iowa City, died Sunday, June 23, 2002 in her home of cancer. Memorial services will be held Tuesday at Zion Lutheran Church in Iowa City. Elaine chose to be cremated. Burial of cremains will be in St. Paul Cemetery in Lisbon, North Dakota. A memorial service will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church in Lisbon at 11:00 am Friday. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials may be directed to Zion Lutheran Church or Iowa City Hospice. Memorials may be sent directly to the family home. Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service in Iowa City, Iowa is in charge of arrangements. (319-338-8171) Elaine was born icon October 20, 1934 in Lisbon, North Dakota, the daughter of Edwin & Ella Larson Kval. She attended schools in North and South Dakota and graduated from Wildrose High School in Wildrose, North Dakota, where she was valedictorian of her class. Elaine received her Bachelor of Science degree from the University of North Dakota in Home Economics. She was again chosen as valedictorian of her graduating class at the University of North Dakota. She later received her masters degree in nutrition from the University of Iowa. Elaine married Richard Hovet on June 5, 1956 in Fisher, Minnesota. Elaine served as assistant director of the Dietary Department at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics for 30 years. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, of which she was past Chair of Congregation and served as a Bethel Bible Teacher and Sunday School Teacher. She was also a member of ELCA Women of the Church, AAUW, Mortar Board Alums, Norwegian Club and president of Lutheran Brotherhood. Elaine served with The American Dietetic Association on both the state and national levels. Elaine is survived by her husband Dick, a son, Donald Hovet & his wife Cynthia and a daughter, Kathryn Hovet, all of Iowa City, two grandchildren, Signe & Iver, a brother, Erwin Kval & his wife Donna of Grand Blank, Michigan and a sister, Ellen Kval of Denver, Colorado. Elaine was preceded in death by her parents, a daughter, Laura Hovet and a sister, Elsie Lundy.

W. Paul Young

W. Paul Young, 90, of Iowa City, died Tuesday, June 11, 2002 at his home after a long illness. There will be no visitation or services. Mr. Young deeded his body to the University of Iowa Department of Anatomy. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery at a later date. Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service in Iowa City is in charge of arrangements. (319-338-8171) Mr. Young was born icon August 23, 1911 in Powersville, Missouri, the son of Clem and Sarah Martin Young. He was raised in Moulton, Iowa and received his B.A. degree from the University of Iowa. Paul served in the United States Army during World War II. He lived in Davenport for 27 years, working as the office manager at Linwood Stone Products, retiring in 1976. He moved to Iowa City in 1993 to live with his sister Helen L’Heureux. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister.

Virgil E. "Jack" Morgan

Virgil “Jack” E. Morgan, 85, of 3701 2nd Street, #50, Coralville, died Thursday morning, May 30, 2002 at his home following a lengthy illness. Memorial services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Monday, June 3, 2002, at the Lensing’s Oak Hill, 210 Holiday Road, with the Reverend Judy Gingerich, officiating. Burial will be in the Oxford Cemetery. Friends may call from 11:00 a.m. until service time, Monday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Jack Morgan Memorial Fund. . Jack Morgan was born icon April 20, 1917 in Oxford, Iowa, the son of Harrison Morton and Mina Mae (Elliott) Morgan. He was raised and educated in the Oxford and Cosgrove area. Jack married Dora Dewey on November 2, 1938 in Iowa City. The couple made their home near Oxford where he farmed and operated a backhoe service. They moved into Oxford in 1963 and then to West Branch in 1995. Jack had been a member of the Oxford United Methodist Church. He enjoyed fishing, playing cards and telling stories. Jack is survived by his wife, Dora of Coralville, his son, Gary Morgan and his wife, Ginger of Hiram, Georgia, four daughters; Marcy Villhauer of Iowa City, Jackie Mossman and her husband, Michael of Mesa, Arizona, Debby Houlton and her husband, Dan also of Mesa, Arizona, Sherry Morgan and her husband, David Huston of Coralville, Iowa, ten grandchildren; Shelly, Brett, Michelle, Tammy, Nathan, Jamie, Josh, Amber, Breon and Lindsey, 10 great-grandchildren; Kyle, Austin, Stephanie, Weston, Jessica, Ashley, Anna, Shelby, Bree and Blake, two sisters; Velma Tompkins, Boone, Iowa, Betty Louis and her husband, Norbert “Bud” of Iowa City. He was preceded in death by his brother, Charles “Bud” Morgan, three sisters; “Mid” Mildred Davin, Bernice Corbin and Corinne Mottet.

Laverne A Barnes

Visitation times are: 5:00 - 8:00 p.m., Thursday, May 30, 2002, at Lensing's Oak Hill, Coralville, Iowa.
Laverne A. Barnes, 83, of 1515 Penn Street and formerly of 713 13th Ave. Coralville, died Friday, May 24, 2002 peacefully at Liberty Country Living after a brief illness. Funeral services will be 2:00pm, Friday at Lensing’s Oak Hill- 210 Holiday Road -Coralville. With Rev. Diane Thownsley of Oxford Methodist Church will be officiating. Friends may call on Thursday from 5:00 to 8:00pm. Burial will be in Grout Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Liberty Country Living 1515 Penn Street, Iowa City, Iowa 52240. Laverne was born icon February 2, 1919 in Iowa City, Iowa the daughter of Charles and Iva (Niffenegger) Lackender. She attended University High School. On June 24, 1943 Laverne was united in marriage to Arthur H. Barnes, he died in 1990. She grew up on the family farm south of Iowa City, later she lived in Norway, Iowa and then in 1961 she moved to Coralville. She worked for ten years as a nurse’s aide at the University Hospitals. She was a member of First Methodist Church of Coralville and a member of the Women’s Moose Auxiliary. Survivors include her children, Holly Gray and her husband Jerry of San Diego, California, son, William C. Barnes and his wife Carolyn of Mesa, Arizona. One grandson, Glenn Gray, one sister, Arlene Johnson of Phoenix, Arizona. Laverne is also survived with special remembrance to her niece, Penny Jenn and many other nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Glenn Lackender.

Robert J. "Bob" Finnegan

Robert “Bob” J. Finnegan, 36, of 158 Bickford Dr., West Branch, died at his home on Monday, June 3 following a courageous battle with cancer. Funeral mass will be held Friday at 10 am at St. Mary’s Church in Tipton with Rev. Eugene Benda officiating. Burial will be at West Branch Cemetery. Friends may call on Thursday from 3 to 8 pm at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service in Iowa City, where a parish vigil service will be held at 7 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the children’s education fund or to Iowa City Hospice. Bob was born icon Nov. 20, 1965 in Iowa City, the son of Tom and Alice Sueppel Finnegan. He married Jeanie Johnson Sept. 26, 1992 at St. Mary’s Church in Iowa City. He graduated from Regina High School in 1985. Bob worked as an equipment operator for Johnson County Secondary Road division. Bob will always be remembered for his love of family and friends, particularly Jeanie and their children. He also enjoyed football, golf, racing and his work. Bob was always one to count on in times of need, whether it be to family, friends or strangers. Survivors include: his wife Jeanie of West Branch; his children, Austin, Ashley and Andrew, all at home; his mother, Alice Finnegan of Iowa City; his grandmother, Katherine Sueppel of Iowa City; one brother, Tom Finnegan Jr. and his wife Patti of Eldridge; two sisters, Barb Tang of Iowa City and Katie Ryan and her husband Tim of Atalissa; his mother and father-in-law, Pete and Sharon Johnson of Tipton; his sister-in-law, Jennifer Frederick and her husband Dean of West Branch; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Tom Sr.

Robert W. Cech

Robert W. Cech, 66, of 2 Highview Knoll, died Tuesday, June 4 at his home following a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Funeral services will be held at 2 pm Sunday, June 9 at First Presbyterian Church with Pastor David Johnson officiating. Friends may call at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service on Saturday from 4 to 7 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to First Presbyterian Church Organ Fund, Habitat for Humanity or Iowa City Hospice. Mr. Cech was born icon Jan. 15, 1936 in Saginaw, Michigan, the son of William and Winnifred Hellus Cech. He married Nancy Elliott on June 21, 1959 in Princeton, Iowa. He graduated from Franklin High School in Cedar Rapids, Iowa in 1954 and Westmar College in LeMars, Iowa in 1961. He worked for Wiltgen Cement Co. and the county engineer’s office in LeMars moving to Iowa City in 1966. He was the Manager of Quality Assurance for Amana Refrigeration where he worked for 26 years retiring in 1992. Upon his retirement, he established his own business, Cech Home Improvements. Mr. Cech was a member of First Presbyterian Church where he also served as a ruling elder, deacon, trustee and member of the music committee. He was on the board for Habitat for Humanity. He also served on the United Way Allocations Committee. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend whose humor, talents and devotion will be missed by all. Survivors include: his wife of Iowa City; two daughters, Caroline Godinez and her husband Del and their children Michael and Alexandra of Miami, Florida and Melissa Dorman and her husband Steven and their children Erika, Derek, Katrina, Patrick and Ryan of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; one sister, Barbara Fisher and her husband James of Mequon, Wisconsin. His parents preceded him in death.

Margaret E. "Peg" Villhauer

Margaret E. “Peg” Villhauer, 90, of Oxford, died Wednesday evening, June 5, 2002, at Colonial Manor in Amana, following a short illness. Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, June 10, 2002 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Oxford with the Reverend Ed Dunn and Reverend Bill Reynolds, officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Oxford. Friends may call at the church from 3:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, where there will be a Catholic Order of Foresters Rosary at 5:00 p.m. and a parish vigil service at 7:00 p.m. Memorials may be made to St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Oxford, or the Oxford First Responders. Margaret E. Villhauer was born icon October 1, 1911, in Oxford, Iowa, the daughter of Harry M. and Mary Ellen (Ahern) Stockman. She grew up and was educated in the Oxford area, graduating from Cosgrove High School in 1928. She moved to Iowa City following high school and worked as a housekeeper for the Mercer family. She was united in marriage to Philip Villhauer on September 5, 1934 in Iowa City. The couple made their home in Oxford. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Oxford, the Altar & Rosary Society and the Catholic Order of Foresters. Peg is survived by three daughters; Janice Nelson (Dave) of Matherville, Illinois, Geraldene Ries (Charles) of Shellsburg, Iowa, Nancy Freeland (Charles) of Waterloo, three sons; Marcus Villhauer (Ann) of Oxford, Mike Villhauer (Faith) of Rockwell City, Kirk Villhauer (Cris) of Iowa City, her daughter-in-law, Karen Vanorny (Leonard) of Solon, 31 grandchildren, 58 great-grandchildren, her brother, Edward Stockman (Colleen) of Tipton, her sister, Edna Draker of Amana, her brother-in-law, Dale Steckly of West Branch, and her sister-in-law, Regina Stockman of Iowa City. She was preceded in death by her husband, her son, Stanley, one great-grandchild, four brothers; Leo, Sylvester, Frank and Eugene, three sisters; Marie Smith, Alice Liddicoat and Dorothy Steckly.

Timothy was born icon November 11, 1946 the son of Raymond and Marjorie (Deatrich) Stockstell in Marengo, Iowa. On June 3, 1995 he was united in marriage to Bernadine Applewhite. Timothy worked for St. Luke’s Chemical Dependency Center as a substance abuse counselor. Survivors include his wife, Bernadine Franks-Stockstell of Iowa City, six children, Marjorie Nash of Iowa City, Iowa, Troy Nash of Wellman, Iowa, Amanda Creamer and her husband (Bob) of Iowa City, Shawndell Stockstell of Washington, Iowa, Brennan Moriati of Springfield, Massachusetts and Aaron Stockstell of Iowa City, Iowa. His parents, Raymond and Marjorie Stockstell; two sisters, Mary Reshley of Washington, Iowa, Kathy Blakley and her husband Roger of Kalona, Iowa. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by one brother, Ron Stockstell and one sister, Betty Stockstell.
