Visitation times are: 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. Friday at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, Kirkwood Avenue, Iowa City.
Doris Kinney, 61, of Clinton, formerly of 14 Arbandy Drive, Iowa City, died Tuesday evening, May 21, 2002, at Mercy Medical Center in Clinton, Iowa, following a lengthy illness. Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, May 25, 2002, at the Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, 605 Kirkwood Avenue, Iowa City. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery, Solon, Iowa. Friends may call from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to a general fund in her name. Doris Kinney was born icon February 9, 1941, in Solon, Iowa, the daughter of James and Caroline (Studt) Prohaska. She grew up on the family farm is Solon and graduated from the Solon High School. She was united in marriage to Gordon Kinney. The couple made their home in Prairie City. She returned to Solon in 1974 following the death of her husband and to Clinton in August of last year. Doris was proud of her family and especially enjoyed her grandchildren, as well as, cooking and sewing. Doris is survived by her son, William Kinney and his wife, Michelle of Austin, Minnesota, two daughters, Bonnie Kinney, Patricia Fields and her husband, Jeffrey all of Iowa City, four grandchildren; Madeline and Benjamin Kinney, Xavier and Zachary Fields, two sisters, Ruth Frauenholtz and her husband, Francis Sr., of North Liberty, Donna Johnson and her her husband, Mark of Iowa City and her brother, Francis Prohaska of Solon. She was preceded in death by her husband, three brothers; James, Frederick and Leo and one sister, Esther.

Evelyn A. Martin

Evelyn A. Martin, 90, of 3476 G Richard Circle SW, Iowa City, died Wednesday, June 5 at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Funeral mass will be Saturday at 10 am at St. Wenceslaus Church with Rev. Michael Phillips officiating. Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery. Friends may call on Friday from 4 to 8 pm at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service in Iowa City where a vigil service will be held at 7 pm Friday. Memorial donations may be made to American Heart Association or American Cancer Society. Mrs. Martin was born icon February 10, 1912 in Platteville, Wisconsin, the daughter of Frank and Frances Dolezal Kasparek. She married William Martin October 9, 1943 in Rockford, Illinois. She was a homemaker and enjoyed sewing. Mrs. Martin was a member of St. Wenceslaus Church and the Altar & Rosary Society. Survivors include: one daughter, Pat and her husband Stacy Pechman of Iowa City; three grandchildren, Bill, Brenda and Brad; three great-grandchildren, Katie, Emma and Abby; She was preceded in death by her husband; her son, William and ten brothers and sisters.

Duane M. Bross

Visitation times are:
Duane M. Bross, 76 of 1300 Brookwood Drive died Wednesday, May 22, 2002 at the University of Iowa Hospital after a brief illness. Funeral services will be 10:00am on Saturday at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church with Rev. James Vrba officiating. Friends may call on Friday from 4:00 to 8:00pm at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service, 605 Kirkwood where a rosary will be said at 5:00pm and a parish wake service will be conducted at 7:00pm. Visitation will also be held Saturday after 9 am at the church. Burial will be in St. Peter’s Cemetery, Cosgrove. A memorial fund has been established in his name. Duane was born icon June 25, 1925 in Van Horne, Iowa the son of Henry F. and Alvena S. (Knaack) Bross. On June 29, 1944 he was united in marriage to Virginia Ball, the couple was married at St. Peter’s Church in Cosgrove, Iowa. He worked as a car salesman for many years. He worked for Weinbrenner and Wagner Pontiac. He was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. He enjoyed his family. He is survived by his wife, Virginia of Iowa City; four children, Mary Ellen Stigers and her husband Roger of Tiffin, Robert Bross and his wife Martha of Cape Coral, FL, Timothy Bross and his wife Lori of Iowa City, Gina Richardson and her husband Mike of Ainsworth, Iowa; 8 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren, he is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Duane is preceded in death by his parents, one daughter, Linda, one brother, Vernon and two sisters, Iris and Lorine.

Judith "Judy" Slaughter Curtis

Judith A. Slaughter Curtis, 60, formerly of Lone Tree, died Sunday, January 20, 2002 in St. Louis, Missouri following a long illness. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 am Thursday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Iowa City with Reverend Joseph Van Phung officiating. Friends may call Wednesday from 3:00 – 8:00 PM at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service in Iowa City, where a parish vigil service will be held at 7:00 PM. Burial will be in the Lone Tree Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to The Life and Hope Fund at St. Luke’s Hospital, c/o Jim Humphrey’s, St. Luke’s Hospital, 232 S. Woods Mill Road in Chesterfield, Missouri, 63017. Judy was born icon September 1, 1941 in Iowa City, the daughter of Raymond & Helen Colbert Slaughter. She was united in marriage to Danny D. Curtis on June 8, 1963 in Lone Tree. Judy was a longtime schoolteacher of which the past 17 years were with Parkway Central High School in St. Louis. Survivors include: Husband: Danny D. Curtis of St. Louis, MO. Son: Clayton J. Curtis of Chicago Sister: Brenda Ewing & her husband Joe of Iowa City Brothers: Gary Slaughter & his wife Marla of Lone Tree Ronald Slaughter & his wife Kathy of Coralville Keith Slaughter & his wife Diane of Iowa City David Slaughter & his wife Jan of Cedar Rapids Richard Slaughter & his wife Margaret of Iowa City Mother: Helen Slaughter of Iowa City Mother in Law: Ester Curtis of Lone Tree Several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends Judy was preceded in death by her father Raymond Slaughter and her father in law, Lloyd Curtis.

Margaret B. Brooke

Margaret Battelle Brooke, 61, of 638 S. Governor Street, died Saturday morning, January 26, 2002, at Mercy Hospital following a lengthy illness. Services will be held in Northern Virginia, with burial in Fairfax Memorial Park Cemetery in Fairfax, Virginia. The Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, Iowa City is in charge of local arrangements. Margaret Battelle Brooke was born icon March 9, 1940 in Elgin, Illinois, the daughter of Clinton Lee and Ethel Willcox Brooke. She received her bachelor’s of music degree from Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York, studied privately in Paris with Andre Navarra. She obtained her master of music degree from Bowling Green State University and she was a candidate for her D.M.A. at the University of Iowa after moving to Iowa City in the early 1980’s. She taught music in various public schools, Fort Hays Kansas State College, Luther College in Decorah and taught and was a research assistant at the University of Iowa. She also taught private cello students for many years. Her most recent employment at the University of Iowa was as immigration adviser in the office of International Education and Services until retiring in 1997. Margaret married William Blackwell of Iowa City. She was very active in Quad Cities Symphony, was a member of the Birmingham, Alabama Symphony, had volunteered for the Domestic Violence Project. She currently was a co-owner and operator of Leslie’s Luxuries with Leslie O’Leary in the Uptown Bill’s Small Mall in Iowa City. Margaret is survived by her husband, William Blackwell of Iowa City, her brother, Tyrrell Brooke of Vienna, Virginia, three nephews; Thomas, Robert and James Brooke, two great-nephews, William and Tyrrell Brooke.

Dona Fae Park

Dona Fae Park, 78, of 816 E. College Street, Iowa City, died Thursday, January 31, 2002 at Mercy Hospital following a lengthy illness. Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 5, 2002 at the Congregational United Church of Christ, 30 N. Clinton Street, Iowa City, with the Reverend Bruce Fischer, officiating. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery, Iowa City. Friends may call at the church from noon until service time Tuesday at the church. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Ronald McDonald House. The Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service of Iowa City is in charge of the arrangements. Dona Fae Park was born icon November 10, 1923 in Gilman, Iowa, the daughter of John F. and Stella M. Baustian Siehl. She was raised in Grinnell, graduating from Grinnell High School and later Grinnell College with a bachelor’s in business. She moved to Iowa City in 1950 and received her Masters in Library Science from the University of Iowa. She was united in marriage to Keith A. Park on August 22, 1952 in Grinnell. The couple made their home in Iowa City, where she worked as a librarian for the Iowa City Community School District for 24 years, the last fifteen years at Grantwood Elementary. She was a member of the Congregational United Church of Christ and Alpha Xi Delta. Dona Fae is survived by two daughters; Emily Park of Belfast, Ireland, Martha Wichert and her husband, John of Plantation, Florida, two grandchildren, Timothy Keith and John Kearney, her brother, Farrell Park and his wife, Ruth, her sister, Blanche Harris all of Grinnell, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her former husband, Keith Park.

Clara M. Jones

Clara M. Jones 95 of Oaknoll, formerly of Windmill Pointe, Coralville died Tuesday, February 05, 2002. A memorial service will be held this summer in Salem, Oregon. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association. Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service is in charge of arrangements. Clara was born icon September 26, 1906 in Talmidge, Nebraska the daughter of Frank and Marie Meier Siebens. She was raised in the Cresco, Iowa area. In August of 1936 Clara was united in marriage to William “Norman” Jones in Salem, Oregon, where she resided until 1989.He preceded her in death in 1985. She received her BA from Western Oregon University (0regon Normal). She taught grade school in Salem, Oregon. Survivors: 1 Son Dr. Ron Jones and his wife Jane of Iowa City, IA 1 Sister Laura Butenschoen of Portland, OR 2 Grandchildren Kristine M. Jones-Bynum of Portland, OR Michael N. Jones of Seattle, WA 4 great grandchildren Riley and Regan Jones, Spencer and Jonathan Bynum Proceeded in death by her parents, her husband, 3 sisters, 4 brothers and 1 granddaughter, Karen.

Margaret Zimmerman

Margaret E. Zimmerman, 86, of 926 12th Avenue died on Friday, May 3, 2002 at Meadow Lawn Care Center in Davenport following a lengthy illness. Private family services will be held at a later date. Arrangements are with Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service. Mrs. Zimmerman was born icon on April 5, 1916, in Johnson County, Iowa, the daughter of Andrew and Matilda Ericson Johnson. She married Arthur Zimmerman on March 8, 1952. Mrs. Zimmerman had been a waitress at the D & L Cafe and Doug’s Diner for many years. She is survived by her husband, Arthur of Coralville, Her daughter in law, Nancy Frack of Burlington, Vermont, One nephew, Donald Johnson and his wife Betty of Dardanelle, Arkansas, Three Grandchildren, and Three Great Grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, one son Ronald Frack, three brothers and three sisters.

Mary Ellen Gatens

Mary Ellen Gatens, 75, of 1500 First Avenue, Coralville, died Saturday morning, May 4, 2002 at her home following a short illness. Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 7, 2002 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Iowa City, with the Reverend James Vrba, officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Iowa City. Friends may call from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. Monday at the Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, 605 Kirkwood Avenue, where there will be a 7:00 p.m. parish vigil service. Memorials may be made to the Regina Foundation for Music Education or the American Lung Association. Mary Ellen Gatens was born icon May 16, 1926 in Iowa City, Iowa, the daughter of Daniel Joseph and Anastacia (Peters) Gatens. She grew up and was educated at St. Patrick’s High School in Iowa City. She later graduated from the University of Iowa with a bachelors in music. She was a piano teacher for many years retiring in 1991. Mary Ellen was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, the Voices of Experience, and volunteered thousands of hours at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, she also was an active volunteer at the Senior Center. Miss Gatens is survived by two brothers: Don J. Gatens and his wife, Marylou of Iowa City, J. Harold Gatens and his wife, Norma of San Antonio, Texas, also several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister, Irene (Mrs. Earl) Riley and one brother, Edmund Gatens.
