Mary “Helen” Connelly, 95, of 712 6th Avenue, Iowa City, died Saturday morning, June 1, 2002, at her home following a lengthy illness. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 4, 2002 at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, 440 S. 1st Avenue, Iowa City, with the Reverend Tim Zimmermann, officiating. Burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery, Iowa City. Friends may call from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. Monday at the Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, 605 Kirkwood Avenue, Iowa City. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Iowa City or Our Redeemer Christian Preschool. Mary “Helen” Connelly was born icon January 21, 1907 in Johnson County, the daughter of Walter F. and Elmira (Rhoades) Cline. She was raised in Madison County and as a young adult, moved to Johnson County, where she has since been a resident. She was united in marriage to Ervin Connelly on May 23, 1928 in Iowa City. The couple made their home in the Iowa City area, where they farmed and she later worked in housekeeping at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center until retiring in 1969. She was a charter member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church and a member of the LWML. Helen is survived by two daughters, Iola Betow of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Jean Cox and her husband, William of Vacaville, California, seven grandchildren; Terry, Sandy, Sherry, Candy, Jerry, Doug and Anne, seventeen great-grandchildren, thirteen great-great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, five sisters, three brothers, one daughter, Marilyn Connelly and two great-grandchildren.

Elaine A. Earnest, 63, of 1717 11th Street, Coralville, died Monday evening, June 3, 2002, at her home following a brief illness. Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, June 6, 2002 at St. Andrew Presbyterian Church 1300 Melrose Avenue, with the Reverend Kyle R. Otterbein, officiating. Burial will be in Oakhill Cemetery, Coralville. Friends may call from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Lensing’s Oakhill, 210 Holiday Road, Coralville. Memorials may be made to Iowa City Hospice. Elaine A. Earnest was born icon July 27, 1938 in Wellman, Iowa the daughter of Enos and Erma (Doolin) Miller. She was raised in Wellman. On June 1, 1957 she was united in marriage to Donald Earnest the couple was married in Wellman, Iowa. Elaine worked as a secretary for Essany Custom Cabinetry. She was a member of St. Andrew Presbyterian Church. Elaine is survived by her husband, Donald of Coralville, Iowa, two daughters, Michelle Aubrecht and her husband Tom of Iowa City, Beth Gray and her husband Dan of Iowa City, Iowa; two sons, Kenton and his wife Michelle of Iowa City, Randy Earnest of Davenport, Iowa. 6 grandchildren; by her parents, Enos and Erma Miller of Wellman, Iowa; one sister, Ermadine Boshart and her husband Norman of Wayland, Iowa; three brothers, Duane Miller and his wife Florence of Iowa City, Iowa, Gene Miller and his wife Edna of Kalona, Iowa, Dale Miller and his wife Carol of Iowa City, one brother-in-law, Jim Blosser of South English, Iowa and by her Mother-in-law, Elsie Earnest of Kalona, Iowa. She was preceded in death by one sister, Janice Blosser, one brother, Eldon Dean Miller and one grandchild Kourtney.

Robert "Bob" Work

Robert “Bob” Work, 75, of 916 Kirkwood Avenue, Iowa City, died Monday, June 10, 2002 at Mercy Hospital of cancer. Funeral Mass will be celebrated Thursday at 10AM at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church with Rev. Jim Vrba officiating. Burial will be at Memory Gardens. Friends may call from 4-8PM Wednesday at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service, Iowa City, where a parish vigil service will be held at 7PM. Memorial donations may be made to St. Patrick’s Church. Mr. Work was born icon July 14, 1926 in Manchester, Iowa, the son of Amasa and Alice Paisley Work. He married Catherine Wilcox on May 25, 1949. He worked for the telephone company for 31 years. He volunteered at Mercy Hospital and was was instrumental in the installation of Lifeline in people’s homes. He had served in the Army during World War II. He was a member of American Legion Post #1, the Iowa City Moose Lodge and Telephone Pioneers of America. Survivors include: his wife Catherine of Iowa City; four daughters, Barbara Work and her husband Michael Cline, Maureen Lenoch, Teresa Osmundson and Patricia Work, all of Iowa City; three grandchildren, Katy Lenoch, Robert and Michael Osmundson one sister in law; Barbara Work of Littleton, Colorado his dachshund, Crystal. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Richard.

Dr. Gilbert E. "Gil" Lilly

Dr. Gilbert E. “Gil” Lilly, age 71, of 11 Lakeview Drive in Iowa City, accidentally drowned Monday, May 27, 2002 while fishing at his home. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 10:00 am at First United Methodist Church in Iowa City with Reverend Paul Akin officiating. Friends may call Friday from 4 – 8 pm at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service in Iowa City. Burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery in Iowa City with military rites provided by Coralville American Legion Post 721 and assisted by other local military organizations. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Fish & Wildlife Projects through the Department of Natural Resources or The American Heart Association. Dr. Lilly was born icon May 14, 1931 in Barron, Wisconsin, the son of Everett & Mary Beecroft Lilly. He graduated from Barron High School in 1949. He was united in marriage to LaVonne Lloyd October 23, 1954 in Barron. Dr. Lilly graduated from River Falls State University in River Falls, Wisconsin in 1951 and earned his bachelor’s and dental degrees from the University of Minnesota in 1955. He also completed a predoctoral program in orthodontics from the University of Minnesota in that same year. He received his Certificate in Oral Pathology from Walter Reed Army Hospital in Washington, D.C..He served in the Army Dental Corps. For 20 years, attaining the rank of Full Colonel. In 1975, Dr. Lilly came to the University of Iowa as professor and head of the Department of Oral Pathology, Radiology and Medicine. He remained department head until 2000. Dr. Lilly earned numerous awards for service and education at the University of Iowa. The dental classes of 1983 and 1984 selected him as best instructor and he received the Dental Educator of the Year Award from the UI Dental Alumni Association in 1984. He also received the UI Hancher-Finkbine Medallion in 1987 and in 2000, the UI Council on Teaching recognized him for educational excellence. Dr. Lilly was an active researcher, leading more than 50 clinical, laboratory and epidemiologic studies. He wrote and presented widely and served as a consultant at the national level, advising the National Institutes of Health, the Surgeon General and other government agencies and organizations. He was a member of numerous professional organizations, including the American Dental Association, American Academy of Oral Pathology, American Association for the Advancement of Science, International Association for Dental Research, American Association of Dental Schools, International College of Dentists, American Academy of Dental Radiology, American Academy of Oral Medicine, International Association for Dental Research, University District Dental Society, Omicron Kappa Upsilon and was a member of the local British Car Club. Dr. Lilly’s interests included gardening, fishing, cooking, traveling and the Iowa Hawkeyes. Most of all, he cherished his family and his friends. He is survived by his wife LaVonne; a son, Scott Lilly and his wife Lisa of Tulsa, Oklahoma; a daughter, Kim Lilly and her husband Lynn Sigler of Iowa City; a sister, Caryl Olson and her husband Severt of Barron, Wisconsin; six grandchildren, Rachel, Ethan, Everett, Ryan, Jennifer and Shane; three nephews and one niece. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Miriam Meade

Miriam Meade, 75 of in Iowa City, died Saturday, May 18, 2002 at Mercy Hospital after a long illness. Funeral services will be held 1:30pm Monday at Lensing’s Funeral and Cremation Service, 605 Kirkwood with Sr. Agnes officiating. Friends may call Sunday from 3:00 to 6:00pm at Lensings Funeral and Cremation Service. Burial will be at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Iowa City. Memorials may be directed to Iowa City Hospice or American Cancer Research Fund. Miriam was born icon November 7, 1926 the daughter of Earnest A. and Frances (Frits) Horner. She attended Brighton High School graduating in 1944. On May 29, 1965 she was united in marriage to Michael Louis Meade. Miriam worked for the telephone company in Cedar Rapids, Iowa for nineteen years. She was a person who loved life, enjoyed her family and friends. She was an avid Hawkeye Fan, she enjoyed playing bridge and golf at High Point Golf Club. She is survived by two sons, Timothy M. Meade of Austin, Texas and Jeffrey W. Meade and his wife Tammy of Bartlett, Illinois, two grandsons, Ethan and Chad, two sisters, Millie Nollsch and her husband Duane of Iowa City, Iowa, Ruth Lewis and her husband Arch of Gainesville, Texas; one brother, Harold Horner and special friend, Barbara Hall both of Dublin, Ohio. Miriam is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Miriam was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Michael on February 19, 2001.

Sydney Spayde

Sydney H. Spayde, 94, of 3500 Lower West Branch Road, Iowa City, died Sunday morning, February 3, 2002 following a short illness. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 16, 2002, at Trinity Episcopal Church, 320 E. College Street, Iowa City, with the Reverend Peter Sanderson officiating. Burial will be at a later date at the Evergreen Cemetery, Fairfield, Iowa. Memorials may be made to the Red Cloud Indian School in Pine Ridge, South Dakota. The Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, Iowa City, is in charge of the arrangements. Sydney H. Spayde was born icon October 17, 1907 in Rapid City, South Dakota, the son of Fred LeRoy and Anna Kimble Spayde. He received his BA from Northwestern University School of Speech in 1929, obtained his MFA from the University of Iowa in 1937 and received an honorary Ph.D. from Parsons College in Fairfield, Iowa. He was united in marriage to Gladys Carlson on September 8, 1950 in Hisega, South Dakota. Sydney worked as a theatre director, designer and educator for twelve community and professional theaters and twelve university theatres across the country, including the University of Iowa Theater Department. They made their home in Fairfield, Iowa, from 1964 until moving to Iowa City in 1984. He was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church, Phi Mu Alpha, was a 32nd Degree Mason and a member of Phi Kappa Phi. Sydney is survived by his wife, Gladys of Iowa City and his son, Jon Spayde and his wife, Laurie Phillips of St. Paul, Minnesota.

Arthur H. Miller

Arthur H. Miller, 66, of Iowa City, IA died Tuesday August 19, 2008.
Arthur was born icon on April 24, 1942 in Little Falls, MN to Robert and Bernardine (Welters) Miller Sr. He was a professor at the University of Iowa. He married Natasha Ivanova on September 27, 2001 in Iowa City, IA.
Arthur is survived by his wife Natasha of Iowa City, four children; Bret Miller of Michigan, Maija Rowland of Michigan, Marcus Miller of Iowa, Lucas Miller of Iowa, six siblings; Maryann McDougal, Robert Miller Jr., Ronald Miller all of Minnesota, James Miller of Missouri, Joel Miller of Arizona, David Miller of North Carolina, and a grandson Randy Corey.
Arthur was preceded in death by his parents.

John W. McLure

Associate Professor Emeritus John W. McLure’s life will be celebrated at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 20, at the Unitarian Universalist Society, 10 South Gilbert Street in Iowa City with the Rev. Benjamin Maucere officiating. John died Feb 8 from multiple myeloma cancer, following four years of treatment. He was 74.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Gail Thomas McLure, Iowa City; two sons David (Karin), Shrewsbury, MA, and John R. (Kristine) of Iowa City; grandchildren Matthew, Amanda and John D. McLure; brother-in-law Randall Thomas (Murl and their adult son and daughter, Joel and Emily), Tulsa, OK; sister-in-law Corine Perkins (adult daughter Laura de Turro and her children Zach and Miranda), Madison, WI; nephew Phillip Thomas (Marianne and their children Jacob and Greta), Bergen, Norway; niece Sharon (Stephen) Parramore, Tuscaloosa, AL; and niece Celeste Thomas, Mason City, IA.
Before joining the UI College of Education faculty in 1969, John had taught in junior and senior high schools in Alabama and Illinois and had been a school counselor, an assistant principal, and while at Fort Riley, KS, an adult education teacher for Army personnel. At the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, he completed a master’s degree in history and a PhD in educational administration, curriculum and supervision.
Until he retired in 2005, John taught in the areas of teaching and learning, helping students to envision the interdisciplinary nature of learning and explore issues in their specialty areas. He published in journals for teachers of science, social studies, English, mathematics, home economics, physical education, counseling, equity, and more.
John made efforts to eliminate sex-role stereotyping in schools, curriculum materials, and national curriculum associations. He kept current on secondary school curriculum by visiting schools as part of North Central Accreditation teams. He worked with middle school science teachers to develop hands-on activities to peak students’ interests in science. He served nine years as senior executive editor of Science Activities, a Heldref publication.
John’s work also included developing democracy-building curricula for post-Soviet nations in Eastern Europe, surveying the junior high to middle school movement in the upper Midwest, and promoting educational gaming and simulation. His most popular game, Puzzle: A Simulation of a Biographer’s Tasks, helps students learn to do historical research.
With the late UI Associate Professor David Leslie, he developed an instruction booklet, Exercise for the Elderly, and two television series to bring exercise programs to older adults across Iowa and to help nurses and activity directors to initiate such programs. First published in 1975, the booklet is in its third edition. The cutting-edge program gave physical education a lifelong focus.
With some proficiency in five languages, John had a range of international interests; he chaired the UI International Education Committee; served as visiting professor for a 1985 Soviet Union summer travel seminar for American educators and for six summer sessions at the University of Yucatan, Mexico; traveled to Nigeria and other African countries to coordinate a program that brought small groups of ministry of education personnel to the UI for intensive training; was active with CIVIC, the Council for International Visitors to Iowa City; and kept his door open to students.
During his 35 years on the Iowa faculty John served on 135 PhD thesis committees, nearly 30 of which he chaired, and another 20 he co-chaired.
John was born icon on Nov. 9, 1934 in Citronelle, AL, attended elementary schools in that state and New York, and earned a Bachelor of Science degree with double majors in general science and English at the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa in 1956. Upon completion of Reserved Officers Training Corps in college, he was cited as a Distinguished Military Graduate. To enable his wife to complete her senior year of college, he served for a year as a Reserved Commissioned Officer with grade of Second Lieutenant and taught high school near their campus home. The next year he entered active duty at Fort Benning, GA and later at Fort Riley, KS, where he was promoted to First Lieutenant before his honorable discharge in 1959.
His science interests ranged through archaeology, botany, biology, entomology, geology, mycology, ornithology and paleontology, with most of these reflected in his writings. He was active athletically in volley ball, jogging, swimming and Tai Chi. John was a published essayist and poet. His last essay, “The Hen of the Woods, ” about a species of mushroom, was published last year in the “Wapsipinicon Almanac, Number 14” by the Route 3 Press.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Iowa City Hospice or the Unitarian Universalist Society of Iowa City.
