Margaret F. Seemuth

Services: Margaret chose to be cremated. A graveside service will be held Saturday at 10:00 AM at Oak Hill Cemetery in Coralville.
Visitation: In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial gifts be directed to The Department of Speech Pathology and Audiology for a fund to be established in Margaret’s name.
Margaret F. Seemuth, 82, of 176 Bon Aire in Iowa City, died Wednesday, December 8, 2004 at her home after an extended illness.
Margaret was born icon November 9, 1922 in Iowa City, the daughter of George H. & Gertrude (Solnar) Seemuth. She graduated from St. Mary’s High School in Iowa City and has been a lifelong resident of Iowa City.
Margaret Seemuth worked for the University of Iowa Department of Speech Pathology and Audiology from 1956 until her retirement in 1992. She began her career as departmental secretary at the department’s first location in Seashore Hall. She moved to the department’s current location, Wendell Johnson Speech and Hearing Center, with it’s completion in 1968 and was the department’s Office Coordinator until her retirement in 1992. Margaret was beloved by her co-workers and many decades of PhD students who looked upon her as their heroine who typed their dissertations!
Survivors include two brothers, Robert Seemuth (Lois) of Iowa City and George Seemuth (Laura) of Nixa, Missouri; a very special friend, Robert George of Iowa City and several nieces and nephews.
Margaret was preceded in death by her parents.

John Henry Ehlers
Born: December 06, 1916
Died: December 07, 2004
Services: A short graveside gathering will take place @ 1PM, Saturday, December 11 for family and close friends at the Reinbeck Cemetery, Reinbeck, Iowa.
Visitation: Memorials can be sent to either the Iowa City Senior Center 28 S. Linn Street Iowa City, IA 52240 or Iowa City Rehabilitation and Health Care Center 3661 Rochester Ave Iowa City, IA 52245 to help support their great work.
John Henry Ehlers, 88, of Iowa City died December 7, 2004 in Iowa City.
Born December 6, 1916, John passed on to be with his wife, Maretta, deceased June 26, 1998 and patiently waiting for him. John died peacefully doing what he enjoyed most, enjoying a good dinner. His 88 years filled with great friends and wonderful memories will live forever among those who survive him, including daughter Debbie Krenz, her husband Gene, granddaughters Kari Downey and Stacie Woods, and great granddaughters Grace and Claire; sons in law Eric Downey and Dennis Woods; son Steve Ehlers, daughter in law Sharry, and grandsons Brian and John; brothers Ray, Bob, Gene and their families. John's other family includes his many friends at the Iowa City Senior Center where he was reigning pool shark and champion for many years and all the gifted and wonderful staff at the Iowa City Rehabilitation and Health Care Center.

Charlotte Elizabeth Rains

Died: December 06, 2004
Services: Funeral Services will be held Friday, December 10 at 2:30 p.m. at Faith United Church of Christ with Reverend Bruce Williams officiating. Burial will be at Memory Gardens.
Visitation: Friends may call on Thursday, December 9 from 4:00-7:00 p.m. at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service. Memorial donations may be made to Faith United Church of Christ or University of Iowa Labor Center, 100 Oakdale Campus-Room M210OH, Iowa City, IA 52242-5000..
Charlotte Rains, 78, of 823 Longfellow Court, passed away Monday December 6, 2004 at Mercy Hospital.
Charlotte Elizabeth Rains was born icon July 6, 1926 in West Liberty, Iowa the daughter of Ray and Elsie (Hannah) Smith. Char graduated from Oxford High School in May 1945. She was very proud to play on both the softball and basketball teams. She earned her teaching certificate from Cornell College. After graduating from college, Char taught school in the Oxford Community for four years.
Char married Craig Freeman Satterly in June 1948. Their son Kevin Craig was born icon March 29, 1952. Craig passed away in 1967. She married Rocky M. Rains on September 4, 1971. Rocky passed away on August 15, 1988.
Char worked at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Iowa City for the next 26 years. She was very active in the American Federation of Government Employees Union (AFGE). She was elected to the role of president and performed these duties for many years. After leaving the VA, she moved to Elkhorn, Nebraska to work for the 8th District office of AFGE. Char retired from AFGE on September 30, 2004 after 27 years. She then returned to the Iowa City area.
Char was a longtime member of Faith United Church of Christ. She and Craig helped establish the church community in Iowa City. Char loved to fish. She owned her own camper, boat, motorcycle and ATV. She enjoyed the quiet weekends fishing at the lake, alone or with family and friends.
When not working or fishing, Char was watching sports – baseball, basketball and football. She was a loyal Hawkeye fan despite living in Nebraska. She had a passion for her profession. She thrived on working on relationships between labor and management. She chose to work until two months ago because of this. Her work brought her a strong connection with politics, both local and national. Char had a very strong love for her family and friends.
Char is survived by her son Kevin Satterly and his wife Ann and their children Nicole and Ryan; her adopted son Scott Coffin and his wife Heidi and their children Olivia, Cayleb and Gabrielle; and her sister Erma Tomas.
Char was preceded in death by her parents, both her husbands, two brothers Harley and Kenneth Smith and four sisters Leatha Shafer, Dorothy Smith, Margaret Tomash and Helen Kinney.

Jonathan A. Goldstein
Born: July 19, 1929
Died: December 01, 2004
Services: Funeral Services will be Friday, December 3, 2004 at 11:00AM. at Agudas Achim with Rabbi Jeff Portman officiating. Burial will be at Agudas Achim Cemetery.
Visitation: In lieu of flowers, contributions may be directed Agudas Achim or the University of Iowa History or Classics Department c/o the University of Iowa Foundation.
Jonathan A. Goldstein, 75, of Iowa City, died Monday, December 1, 2004 at Greenwood Manor.
Jonathan was born icon July 19, 1929 in New York City and grew up in Omaha, Nebraska, where he graduated from Central High School in 1946. He was the son of Rabbi David A. and Rose Berman Goldstein. On February 1, 1959 he married Helen Tunik in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.. He was a graduate of Harvard University and the Jewish Theological Seminary. He received his PhD from Columbia University.
Jonathan was professor emeritus at the University of Iowa in the Department of History and Classics.
Jonathan is survived by his wife Helen; his daughters, Rachel Goldstein and her husband, Steve Lester of Chicago and Rise Goldstein of Los Angeles; two brothers Jeremy (Barbara) Goldstein of Elkins Park, Pennsylvania and Rabbi Nason (Carole) Goldstein of Royal Palm Beach, Florida.
Jonathan was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Alexander.

Enoch J. Wood
Born: August 16, 1921
Died: November 28, 2004
Services: Funeral Services will be held at 1:30 pm on Thursday, December 2, 2004 at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, 605 Kirkwood Ave, Iowa City. Burial will be at Oakland Cemetery, Iowa City. Pastor Tim Malek will officiate.
Visitation: Visitation will be held from 12:00-1:30 pm on Thursday. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Iowa City, 1025 Wade St, Iowa City, IA 52240 or Zion Lutheran Church, 310 N. Johnson St, Iowa City, IA 52245.
Enoch J. “Dick” Wood, 83, died Sunday November 28th, 2004 at Solon Nursing Care Center.
Dick was born icon August 16, 1921 in Hazelton, Iowa, the son of Henry F. and Mabel (Mencl) Wood. He moved to the Iowa City area with his family at age two and spent his early years in Iowa City and North Liberty. He attended City High School. He served in Italy in the United States Army during WWII, where he was wounded and was awarded the Purple Heart. Dick was united in marriage to Mary Jean Sparks on December 30, 1946 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Disabled American Veterans.
Dick is survived by his wife, Mary Jean of Solon, his two daughters; Juanita M. Walker of Lone Tree, Sandra K. Robe and her husband Steven of Coralville, two sons; Larry J. Wood and his wife, Robin of Anderson, South Carolina, Steven D. Wood and his wife, Laurie of Iowa City, Nine grandchildren; Trisha and Shonda Shockley, Jamie Walker, Nathan Robe and special friend Melanie Hebl, Brandon and Kathryn Robe, Benjamin Wood and his wife Betsy, Philip Wood and his wife Jennifer and Jenny Wood, two great grandchildren; Campbell and Meredith Wood.
He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant son, Dennis, his daughter-in-law, Rose Marie Wood, son-in-law, James Walker and an infant sister, Mary.

Kenneth J. Kasper
Born: April 19, 1927
Died: December 07, 2004
Services: Funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday at 10AM, December 10, 2004 at St. Mary’s Church with Rev. Ken Kuntz officiating. Burial with military rites provided by local military organizations will be at St. Joseph’s Cemetery.
Visitation: Friends may call from 4 to 7PM, Thursday at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service, where a Vigil Service will be held at 5PM. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Regina Education Center c/o Catholic Community Foundation.
Ken J. Kasper, 77, 2316 Wayne Avenue, died Tuesday, December 7, 2004 at Windmill Manor following a brief illness.
Ken was born icon April 19, 1927 in Solon, Iowa, the son of Delbert and Anna Kessler Kasper. He was a 1945 graduate of St. Mary’s High School and served in the Air Force during World War II. On April 19, 1951 he married Alice Holdgrafer at St. Mary’s Church in Marshalltown.
Ken had been employed by the F.W. Means Company for twenty six years and later the Iowa State Liquor Store in Iowa City.
Ken was a member of St. Mary’s Church, where he was a greeter and usher, the Knights of Columbus Marquette Council 842 and American Legion Post #17. He enjoyed time with his family, especially attending the activities that his grandchildren were involved in at Regina. Ken liked to travel and follow the Iowa Hawkeyes.
Ken is survived by his wife Alice and their daughter, Barb (Mike) Earles of Iowa City; two grandchildren, Nick and Caite; two sisters Delma and Wilma Kasper of Iowa City;
His sister in law, Elsie Holdgrafer of Marshalltown.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister Mary Louise and one brother Ralph.

H. Marion Klein
Born: May 27, 1913
Died: December 07, 2004
Services: Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday at 10:00 AM at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Iowa City with Reverend Ken Kuntz officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery in Iowa City.
Visitation: Friends may call Sunday from 3:00 to 8:00 PM at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service in Iowa City. A Catholic Foresters Rosary will be held at 3:30 PM and a Parish Wake Service at 7:30 PM. Memorials may be directed to Iowa City Hospice, 1025 Wade Street, Iowa City, Iowa, 52240 or Crestview Nursing & Rehab Center, 451 W. Orange Street, West Branch, Iowa, 52358.
Hannah Marion Klein, 91, formerly of Oxford, died Tuesday, December 7, 2004 at Crestview Nursing & Rehab Center in West Branch following a long illness.
Marion was born icon May 27, 1913 in rural Iowa City to George and Johanna (Andersen) Jensen. She attended country school in rural Johnson County and she was a graduate of University High School in Iowa City. She married Louis Klein on February 2, 1932 at St. Mary’s in Iowa City. They farmed near Tiffin until 1969 when much of their farm was purchased by the government to make way for I-80 and I-380 highways and interchange.
Marion enjoyed gardening, flowers, feeding and watching the birds, baking Danish pastry, sewing Raggedy Ann dolls, handicrafts and her family and friends. She was devoted to her family and beloved by her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Marion was a member of St. Mary’s Church in Iowa City and the Altar & Rosary Society; Farm Bureau Rural Women; Iowa City Women’s Club; and the National Catholic Society of Foresters. She received a 50 year membership pin from the Foresters.
Marion is survived by four sons: Jim (Marilyn) Klein of Wilmington, NC; Jack of Eagan, MN; George (Kathy) Klein of Oxford; and Tom Klein of Oxford; three daughters: Joan (Francis) Cahill of West Branch; Betty (Maynard) Rayner of Lone Tree; and Rose (David) Stevens of Borden, IN; 23 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Blanche Klein; and many nieces and nephews.
Marion was preceded in death by her parents; husband Louis in 1973; two brothers: Fred Jensen and John Jensen; five sisters: infant twins Sidsel and Marie Jensen, Agnes Sexton, Sylvia Volk and Mary Jensen.

Barbara E. Gorvin
Born: December 30, 1943
Died: December 04, 2004
Services: Funeral Mass will be celebrated Tuesday, December 7, 2004 at 10:30AM at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Oxford with Father Edmund Dunn officiating. Burial will be at Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
Visitation: Friends may call from 4 to 8 PM Monday at Lensing’s Oak Hill, Coralville, where a Vigil Service will be held at 7 p, m. and after 9:30AM Tuesday at the church. A luncheon in the Parish Hall will follow the committal. A memorial fund has been established.
Barbara E. Gorvin, 60, of 230 State Street, Oxford, passed on Saturday, December 4, 2004 at her home following a long illness.
Barb was born icon December 30, 1943 in rural Lone Tree to Arthur and Eleonora Seering Hora. She was a graduate of Lone Tree High School and married Larry Gorvin on August 22, 1964 at St. Patrick’s Church in Iowa City.
Barb cared for her husband and children until her youngest started school. She then became a library assistant at the University of Iowa College of Law where she worked for twenty three years, retiring in 2001. Following retirement, Barb enjoyed many hobbies, especially caring for her grandchildren. She will be greatly missed by family, friends and the crew at the Depot.
Barb enjoyed her position as the founder and coordinator of the USS Eaton DD510 Navy Reunion and spent many hours organizing the reunions which occur every two years.
She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Oxford and the Altar and Rosary Society.
Barbara is survived by her husband Larry J. of Oxford and their six children; Lori Swim and fiancé Christian Brenneman and Christine (Gary) Vance, both of South Amana, Kimberly (Shane) Ozburn and Melanie (Michael) Barnes, both of Cedar Rapids, Terri Gorvin of Kansas City, Missouri and Jerry Gorvin of Oxford; her mother Eleonora Kinkaid of Abilene, Texas; two sisters, Yvonne (Duane) Collison of Abilene, Texas and Pat Christner of Independence, Missouri; nine grandchildren, Nicholas, Matthew, Aaron, Keaton, Conner, Mayghan, Hallie, Spencer and Shannon.
Barbara was preceded in death by her father and step-father Ellsworth “Al” Kinkaid
