Eugene E. 'Gene' Brown

Services: Funeral Services to celebrate Gene’s life will be held Wednesday, December 22, 2004 at 10AM at St. Mary’s Church with Rev. Ken Kuntz officiating. Burial will be at Oak Hill Cemetery in Coralville.
Visitation: Friends may call Tuesday from 4-7PM at Lensing’s Oak Hill in Coralville. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Iowa City Hospice or to the Friends of the Coralville Public Library.
Eugene “Gene” E. Brown, 79, of 711 19th Avenue, died at Mercy Hospital Saturday, December 18, 2004 following a lengthy illness.
Gene was born icon April 6, 1925 in St. Paul, Minnesota, the son of Morris and Adeline Hartle Brown. He was a 1943 graduate of Ft. Dodge High School and had attended the University of Iowa. During World War II he served in the Army Air Force. On November 24, 1948 he married Marian Alwine at St. Mary’s Church.
Gene was a contact lens fitter in the Department of Ophthalmology at University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics for twenty seven years. He had served on the Coralville Public Library Board of Directors and had over 1000 hours of volunteer service at the library. He was a member of St. Mary’s Church and the American Legion. Gene was an avid reader who gardened, collected stamps, coins and rocks, and loved to travel.
Gene is survived by his wife Marian; his daughter Becky Crooks and her husband Dave of Iowa City; his son Rick of West Liberty and his grandson Garrison Brown; his in-laws Ruth (Art) Lorack of Hills; his sister-in-law Donna and brothers-in-law Kenneth and Daryle; and his beloved dog Skipper.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one son Gary.

Carrol Jean Havener
Born: August 10, 1919
Died: December 17, 2004
Services: Funeral Services to celebrate Carrol Jean’s life will be held Tuesday, December 21, 2004 at 1PM at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service, Iowa City with Rev. Judy Gingerich officiating. Burial will be at Indian Creek Cemetery in rural Columbus Junction.
Visitation: Friends may call from 5 to 7 PM Monday at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to Iowa City Hospice.
Carrol Jean Havener, 85, of Legacy Point, 1020 Scott Blvd. and formerly of Oskaloosa died peacefully Friday, December 17, 2004 at her home.
Carrol Jean was born icon August 10, 1919 in Haskins, Iowa, the daughter of LeRoy and Nellie Knott Littrel. She was a 1936 graduate of Columbus Junction High School and had attended Iowa State Teacher’s College. In 1938 she married Ezra Smith in Washington, Iowa. They had two children Paul and Marcia. In 1959 she married Orin Havener in Nashua, Iowa at the Little Brown Church. Orin died January 17, 2004.
Carrol Jean had been employed at Townsends Industry in Altoona as a bookkeeper for ten years, retiring in 1981. In 2003 she moved to Legacy Point where she enjoyed all her new friendships.
Carrol Jean had been a lifelong member of the Eastern Star in Washington, Iowa and liked to fish, dance, read and was a loyal Cubs fan. Upon her move to Iowa City she even became a supporter of the Hawkeyes.
She is survived by her two children; Paul Smith and his wife Dee of Washington and Marcia Dautremont of Iowa City; seven stepchildren, Charles (Jane) Havener, Billie (Ernie) Wilfong, Lyle (Terri) Havener, Don (Connie) Havener, Jane Ann (Norman) Kisling, Jerry (Sherri) Havener and Peggy (Burk) Taylor; many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two infant sisters and one infant brother.

Nancy C. Nissley
Born: November 07, 1933
Died: December 04, 2004
Services: Funeral Services will be held at 3:00 pm on Tuesday December 7th, at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, 605 Kirkwood Ave, Iowa City. Pastor Bob Smith and Pastor Richard Grimm will co-officiate.
Visitation: Visitation will be held from 4-8 pm on Monday and 2-3 pm on Tuesday at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service. Memorials can be directed to Iowa City Hospice, 1025 Wade Street, Iowa City, IA 52240.
Nancy C. Nissley, 71, of Wellman, IA, died Saturday December 4, 2004 in Iowa City.
Nancy was born icon November 7, 1933 in Iowa City to R. Maynard and Silence (Norenberg) Bowers. She married L. Leroy Nissley in 1949. They were later divorced. She married Richard Enfield August 2, 1997 in Wellman, IA. Nancy was a member of First Mennonite Church of Iowa City. Nancy worked at the Iowa House Hotel in the Iowa Memorial Union for twenty years.
Nancy enjoyed sewing, gardening, flowers, quilting, cooking, handcrafts and her family and many friends.
Nancy is survived by her husband Rich, five sons; Eugene (Pat) Nissley, John (Sandy) Nissley of Iowa City, Terry (Denise) Nissley of Lacey, WA, Randy (Deb) Nissley of Hills, Mervin Nissley of Buford, GA. Two stepchildren; Rick Enfield (Brenda) of Cedar Rapids and Tina (Terry) Chapman of North Liberty. One brother Paul Bowers (Mary Lou) of Iowa City. Nine grandchildren, five step-grandchildren, Nine great grandchildren, seven step-great grandchildren, one nephew and 3 nieces.
Nancy was preceded in death by her parents and a son Kevin.

Katherine Margaret Joslin-Lemire
Born: December 14, 1998
Died: December 07, 2004
Services: A memorial service will be held at St. Thomas More Church in Iowa City on Tuesday, December 14, 2004 at 6:00 pm. A reception will follow at the family’s home.
Visitation: In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a memorial fund established in Katherine’s name at Hills Bank.
Katherine Margaret Joslin-Lemire died December 7, 2004, of complications following surgery. Born December 14, 1998, Katherine was a fabulous almost-6-year-old!! She faced many challenges in her short life and met them all with fierce determination. Katherine relied on her loving family and friends, outstanding doctors, and the unflagging support of her nurses and therapists to flourish. She was a joyous blessing to her family and they will miss her every day.
Awaiting Katherine in heaven will be her great-grandmother Hester Waddell and grandmother Karen Lemire. She will be missed enormously by her parents Jennifer Joslin and Theresa Lemire, her sister Melissa, and brother Anthony; her grandparents, Edwin and Norma Henderson, Richard Lemire, and Janis and Lou Kessler; her great-grandmothers Margaret Lemire, and Verna Gamel; her great-aunt Jimmie Crawford; her aunt and uncles Jerri and Mike Bradley, and Rick Lemire, and her large extended family.

Dorothy E. O'Brien

Dorothy E. O’Brien, 83 died Sunday, September 21, 2003 at her home surrounded by her family.
Dorothy was born icon May 27, 1920 the daughter of William and Lillian Narbert Kieser in St. Louis, Missouri. In October, 1937, she married Robert James Mills II. They established Mills Pharmacy in 1947 in Waukegan, Illinois and a second store in 1951 in Mundelein, Illinois. He died September, 1949. She later married William E. O’Brien on March 14, 1953. He died in February, 1995.
In 1958 they moved to Iowa City to open the first McDonalds in Iowa City on Riverside Drive. This was a major achievement for a woman in that she was the first woman franchisee of McDonalds. She opened the second store in Coralville on First Avenue in 1977 and a third at Sycamore Mall in 1990.
Dorothy and Bill were instrumental in developing and supporting the Midlands Tennis Tournament and the Iowa City Boys’ Baseball. In 1985 she helped establish the Ronald McDonald House of Iowa City where she served on its Board of Directors. They were gracious contributors to Iowa City’s charities and were awarded the “Service to Mankind” award from Sertoma.
Dorothy was a very determined, positive and unstoppable woman with a very positive outlook on life. She had a strong work ethic and took tremendous pride in her business and her customers. Dorothy loved her family, her grandchildren, her trips to Florida, orchids, and her garden. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church.
Survivors include her daughter, Jeannine D. Mlynski and her husband David of Naperville, Illinois; her sons, Robert J. Mills III of Chicago, Illinois, Kevin W. O’Brien and his wife Jil of Iowa City, Iowa; stepson, Thomas O’Brien and his wife Laura of Danbury, Connecticut; fourteen grandchildren, Robert J. Mills IV and his wife, Cathy, Bradley Danaher, Kristen Heraty and her husband Shawn, O’Brien Mills and his wife Anna, Michael Mills, Elizabeth Gracey and her husband Peter, Ryan O’Brien and his wife Angie, Heather Ruzicka and her husband Bill, Jr., Alexander O’Brien, Lauren O’Brien and Lillian O’ Brien, Erin, Shawn, and Colin O’Brien; seven great grandchildren, Braiddey, Karter, and Jensen Ruzicka, Hannah, Lauren, and Jack Heraty, and Gabriel O’Brien.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands, Robert J. Mills II and William E. O’Brien; her son, Walt O’Brien; and her grandson Graham Mills.

Mary Maxwell
Born: October 27, 1919
Died: July 17, 2004
Services: Memorial Mass will be celebrated Monday, July 19th at 3:00 PM at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Iowa City with Reverend Rudolph Berndt officiating. Mrs. Maxwell chose to be cremated. Private burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery in Iowa City.
Visitation: The family will greet friends Monday in the parish hall at St. Mary’s from 1:00 until 3:00 PM. The family requests that memorials be directed to Iowa City Hospice or St. Mary’s Catholic Church.
Mary Maxwell, 84, of 36 N. Lowell Street in Iowa City, died of cancer on Saturday, July 17th at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City surrounded by her family.
Mary was born icon October 27, 1919 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the daughter of Lawrence and Gladys (Betzler) Coloton. She graduated from Berea High School in Berea, Ohio and attended business college. She married John A. Maxwell on December 28, 1946 in Berea. The couple moved to Iowa City where John studied dentistry at the University of Iowa.
Mary worked for several years at West Music Co. in Iowa City and later for 12 years, at Iowa State Bank & Trust Co., retiring in 1993. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church.
Mary is survived by her children, John and his wife Kathy, Patty Teeple and Greg and his wife Mary Jean, all of Iowa City; grandchildren Jennifer (Teeple) Barham of Bloomington, Illinois, Heather (Teeple) Jeanneret & her husband Sean of Niceville, Florida, Sarah Maxwell of Northfield, Minnesota, Laurie Maxwell of Cedar Falls, Iowa, Amber Maxwell of St. Paul, Minnesota, Matthew Maxwell of Madison, Wisconsin and Christopher Maxwell of Iowa City; a brother, James Coloton and his wife Elsie of Berea, Ohio and a sister, Sister Mary Catherine Rennecker of Chardon, Ohio.
Her parents and her husband John preceded her in death.

Lynn A. 'Trimmer' Detweiler
Born: November 25, 1952
Died: August 03, 2003
Services: Funeral Mass will be at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, August 7, 2003, at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 405 N. Riverside Drive, Iowa City
Visitation: Friends may call from 1:00 until 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, 605 Kirkwood Avenue, Iowa City, where there will be a parish rosary recited at 6:00 p.m.
Lynn A. “Trimmer” Detweiler, 50, of 51 Gleason Drive, Iowa City, died Sunday morning, August 3, 2003, near Salem, South Dakota, from injuries received in a motorcycle accident while on his way to a Harley Rally at Sturgis.
Funeral Mass will be at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, August 7, 2003, at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 405 N. Riverside Drive, Iowa City, with the Reverend Walter Helms, officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Iowa City. Friends may call from 1:00 until 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, 605 Kirkwood Avenue, Iowa City, where there will be a parish rosary recited at 6:00 p.m. Memorials may be made to St. Thomas More Catholic Church.
Lynn Detweiler was born icon November 25, 1952, in Fort Clayton, Panama, the son of Dwain and Ruth (Marine) Detweiler. He was a lifelong resident of Johnson County. He was united in marriage to Theresa Kopatich. Lynn had owned and operated his own construction company for over twenty years. In the last two years he had retired and he and his wife opened Petland in Iowa City. Lynn leaves behind many loved ones.
He is survived by his wife, Theresa Kopatich; his son, Troy Detweiler of Iowa City; two step-sons, Ryan Detweiler of Iowa City, and Jeremy Withrow and his wife Malina of Coralville; his step-daughter, Dawn Walters and her husband J.D. of Kalona; five grandsons; his parents, Ruth and Dwain Detweiler of Brownsville, Texas; two sisters, Linda Bang of Coralville, and Cheryl Detweiler of Bluegrass, Iowa; one brother, Carroll Detweiler; as well as many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. “We will miss you Trimmer”.

June McCarney
Born: June 15, 1920
Died: June 08, 2004
Services: Funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday, June 12, 2004, at 9:00 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with Rev. Ken Kuntz officiating. Burial will be at St. Joseph’s Cemetery.
Visitation: Friends may call Friday from 4:00-7:00 p.m. at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service, where a rosary will be recited at 6:30. A reception will be held at Minerva’s following the committal. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Mercy Hospital Foundation or the University of Iowa Foundation, Box 4550, Iowa City, Iowa 52240-4550 for the June McCarney Student Award Fund at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry.
June McCarney, 83, of Silvercrest Legacy Pointe, 1020 Scott Blvd. died peacefully at her home Tuesday, June 8, 2004, one week shy of her 84th birthday.
June was born icon June 15, 1920 in Mechanicsville, Iowa, the daughter of William J. and Mary Ann (Dvorak) Butler. She was a graduate of Mechanicsville High School and attended Mt. St. Clare College in Clinton, Iowa, and later attended the Iowa State Teacher’s College in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
During World War II, she was employed by the U.S. Department of Defense in Tucson, Arizona. On October 20, 1944, June was united in marriage to Patrick J. McCarney in Tucson. They later moved to Iowa City.
June worked in Clinical Administration at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry for thirty years. During this time she established the Patient Representative Program, the first person so designated in Dental Education Nationally. She served on the Executive Board of the Iowa Society of Patient Representatives, and belonged to several professional organizations. She retired in 1988.
She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, the Altar and Rosary Society, University Club, Iowa City Women’s Club and was a volunteer at Mercy Hospital.
June was well known for her kindness and compassion. Everyone she met was a potential friend or adopted child. She touched the lives of all who came in contact with her. Hearing her loving words of pride and encouragement inspired others to strive to be better people. June was a glorious role model, possessing a magnetic sense of humor and vibrant joy of life.
June’s greatest interests were her family, friends and her many associations in dentistry. She enjoyed traveling extensively, and played in several bridge clubs for many years. Her friends and family will be forever grateful to her for her consistent love and generosity.
June is survived and lovingly remembered by her husband, Pat “P.J” and their four children: Michael and Elizabeth McCarney of Rapids City, South Dakota and their children Daniel and Sara; Katy McCarney and her fiancé, Dennis Mayer of Portland, Oregon; Dan and Margy McCarney of Ames and their children Jillian, Melanie and Shane; Mary McCarney and Paul Hartleben of St. Paul, Minnesota and their children Michael, Devin and Garrett.
June was an aunt to Karen, John and Pat. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers Harold and William and one sister Hazel Connor.
