Virginia Hebert
Feb. 15, 2011
Virginia L. "Ginni" Hebert, 80, formerly of Iowa City, died Sunday, Feb. 6, 2011, at Windmill Manor in Coralville. Mass of Christian Burial was held Feb. 11 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, Iowa City, with the Rev. Michael Phillips officiating. Burial will be at a later date in the Brick Chapel Cemetery, east of Iowa City.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be directed to Elder Services Inc., RSVP.
Ginni was born icon Dec. 5, 1930, in Oxford, the daughter of Cyril and Esther (Schmidt) Bireline. Graduating from Iowa City High School in 1948, Ginni attended the University of Iowa and the St. Francis School of Nursing. A lifelong Iowa City resident, she worked as a secretary at the University of Iowa. She married Donald Hebert on Jan. 26, 1957, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Iowa City.
Ginni was a member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church and was a dedicated volunteer for RSVP, The Rock 'N Read Program and at the Johnson County Courthouse as a visitors assistant. She had served on the boards of the Iowa City High School Alumni, RSVP and Iowa City Parks and Recreation Department.
Survivors include her children, Chuck Hebert (Melissa) of Solon, Laura Hebert of Tuscaloosa, Ala., and William "Bill" Hebert (Lori) of Oakland, Calif.; four grandchildren, Morgan, Rachel, Nicole and Jordan; and two sisters, Marilyn Davisson and Barbara Bireline.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Don in July 2001; a sister, Mary "Babe" Hanrahan; and a brother, Robert Bireline.

Marie Hannen
Feb. 15, 2011
Marie E. Hannen, 89, formerly of Center Point, died Monday, Feb. 7, 2011, at Cottage Grove Place, Cedar Rapids. Services were held Feb. 9 at St. Michael's Catholic Church, Norway, with the Rev. Brian Dellaert officiating. Burial was in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Blairstown.
Marie was born icon Sept. 12, 1921, in Ossian, Iowa, to Charles and Gertrude (Boddicker) Schulte. She married Warren Hannen on Nov. 24, 1943.
She is survived by her eight children, Rick (Sharon) Hannen of Center Point, Jean (Bob) Ohlen of Blairstown, Steve (Rosie) Hannen of Alburnett, Jim (Judy) Hannen of Hiawatha, Julie (Jim) Foltz of Cedar Rapids, Mary Lou (Lee) Roudybush of Muscatine, Trudie (Cliff) Pearcy of Solon and Bill (Lori) Hannen of Hiawatha; 15 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
She is also survived by her siblings, Marion Kurt, Rita Hunter and Denny Schulte; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 54 years; and her siblings, Lloyd Schulte, Margaret Schulte, Evelyn Barta, Vernon Schulte and Edwin Schulte.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Michael's Catholic Church, Norway.
Arrangements are with Brosh Funeral Service of Norway.

Charles Duffy

Charles D. "Charley" Duffy, 83, of rural Solon passed away at home in his sleep on Tuesday morning, Feb. 22, 2011.
Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Feb. 25 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church with Rev. Michael Phillips officiating. Burial was at St. Joseph Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Charles Duffy Memorial Fund.
Charles Duffy enjoyed offices and activities on numerous environmental, political, agricultural, educational, health, athletic, civic and fraternal boards and associations with extensive honors, awards, and recognitions.
Charles served 12 years as member and Chair of the Johnson County Board of Supervisors. He was instrumental in developing Emergency Management and roadside protection and organic land use. He was principal director on the original National Groundwater Policy Forum with Bruce Babbitt in Washington D.C. and co-authored the book "Groundwater: Saving the Unseen Resource" sponsored by the National Governor's Association and Conservation Foundation. Lifetime political activity included visiting President Franklin Roosevelt at the White House as a child. Charles remained active in presidential politics and hosted John Glenn's international media Iowa Caucus event on his farm and events for Bill Clinton, Bruce Babbitt and Dick Gephardt. He served on Johnson County's original Health Board and the Iowa City Catholic School Board.
As a graduate of Iowa State University Livestock Program, Charles was a respected Midwest livestock judge and raised registered Shorthorn cattle. He served as Farm Bureau president and director of the first Iowa Farm Bureau Political Action Committee. He held offices in 47 livestock associations and received all awards as 4-H Leader including induction into the Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame. Charles was also named to the Iowa City High School Hall of Fame.
Charles and Joyce Kasper married on July 28, 1948. His parents were Joseph P. and Laura Duffy.
As a young child Charles' natural singing talent was discovered by Roy Rogers and Dale Evans followed by talent scouts who chose Charles to be Shirley Temple's singing companion in films. However, his parents said "No, thank you, " likewise when he was asked to play son to Henry Fonda in "The Grapes of Wrath" Charles enjoyed singing and acting around his family his entire life.
Charles was also a fine athlete, played first string varsity basketball at Iowa City High, pitched fast-league baseball, and set the record for the farthest ball hit out of the Brown Street Diamond. He coached 4-H basketball five seasons.
Charles is survived by his wife Joyce; their son Charles J. "Chuck" Duffy, who continues farming, and daughters, Bonnie Bradley, Patricia desJardins, Beth Duffy, and Lora (John) Danker; seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; his siblings include Betty of California, Emery of Illinois and Alta Cook of Iowa City.
Charles was preceded by his parents and his brother Bob.

Rita B. Dvorsky

Rita B. Dvorsky, 95, of Iowa City, died peacefully Sunday, Feb. 27, 2011 at Solon Nursing Care Center.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Wednesday, March 2, at St. Mary's Catholic Church with Rev. John Spiegel officiating. Visitation was Tuesday at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service, with a Rosary by the Catholic Daughters and Foresters, and Wednesday at the Church before the service. Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Regina Foundation or the charity of the donor's choice.
Rita was born icon Oct. 28, 1915, in Newport Township, the daughter of Louis J. and Rose (Bumba) Sedlacek. She was a 1934 graduate of Iowa City High School, where she received her teaching certificate. Rita taught in rural Johnson County Schools from 1935-38. On Aug. 16, 1938, Rita married Adolph Dvorsky at St. Wenceslaus Church.
Adolph and Rita farmed near Solon for many years, where she liked to garden, can, cook and sew. In 1969, they moved into Iowa City. Rita enjoyed her work at Cathy's Candle Cupboard and collecting family genealogy. Special moments were the fishing trips with her grandchildren.
Rita was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, the Altar and Rosary Society, Catholic Daughters of America, the National Catholic Society of Foresters and the Diocesan Council of Catholic Women.
Rita is survived by three children, Robert L. (Loretta) Dvorsky of Solon, Joan (Ronald) Gringer of Hills and Karen Weseman of Marion; six grandsons, Randy (Tracy) Gringer, Eric Gringer, Brad (Michelle) Dvorsky, Brent (Deanna) Dvorsky, Brian (Annette) Weseman and Chad Weseman; seven great-grandchildren, Jordan, Jared, Brandon, Brenton, Brooklyn, Brittney and Tanner; numerous nieces and nephews.
Rita was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and her sister Mildred.

Vernell Esch

Vernell Esch, 68, of Strawberry Point, joined Christ on Sunday, Feb. 20, 2011, when she died peacefully at her home, surrounded by her family, after a brave battle with cancer. Funeral services were held Feb. 23 at Emanuel Lutheran Church in Strawberry Point, with the Rev. James Adix and the Rev. Al Hock officiating. Interment was at Cass Township Cemetery, Strawberry Point.
Vernell was born icon Vernell Mary Herman on Feb. 22, 1942, to Elmer and Mary (Grotegut) Herman. She was the youngest of four children and was raised on a farm in rural Waukon. She was confirmed at Zalmona Presbyterian Church in Waukon.
Vernell attended a small country school and in 1959, graduated from Waukon High School. She moved to Cedar Rapids, where she worked as a secretary at Prudential Insurance Co. It was in Cedar Rapids that she met Jan Esch. They were married July 23, 1961, at Zalmona. Jan and Vernell have spent nearly 50 years living and farming north of Strawberry Point, where they raised beef cattle.
Vernell was a wonderful, loving mother and grandmother to her five children and 16 grandchildren. She loved her family and her home, spending time gardening, cooking and canning, quilting, fishing, hunting mushrooms and reading. One of her special talents was he ability to find a four-leaf clover for every special family event.
Spending time with Jan out on the farm defined her life, as did her strong passion for her beloved grandchildren. She was greatly anticipating the birth of her 17th grandchild to Kim and Chad in early April.
Vernell had a strong Christian faith and was an active, longtime member of Emanuel Lutheran Church and most recently of Mission in Christ in Strawberry Point, participating in Bible study and serving through the church women's organization.
Survivors include her husband, Jan Esch of Strawberry Point; their five children, Carrie (John) Martin of Olympia, Wash., Kristi (Peter) McGreal of Elkader, Kellie (Cory) Grabenbauer of North Liberty, Dr. Kevin (Staci) Esch of Ames and Kim (Chad) Blackwell of North Liberty; 16 grandchildren, Peter, Chris, Benjamin and Lisha Martin, Jacob, Tim, Joe, Maria, Sam and Dan McGreal, Ilsa, Ayla and Elias Grabenbauer, Gabriella and Eva Esch and Isaac Blackwell; one brother, Nyles (Ruby) Herman of Waukon; one sister, Marian (Hanley) Jenkins of West Des Moines; a brother-in-law, Harold Wessels of Strawberry Point; dear family friends, Greg and Joan Mohr of Spirit Lake; and many nieces nephews, and friends.
Vernell was preceded in death by her parents, Elmer and Mary Herman; her brother and sister-in-law, Ruben and Helen Herman; and a sister-in-law, Beverly Wessels.
Memorials may be directed to the Strawberry Point Public Library or the Strawberry Point Lutheran Home.

Everett Harrelson

Everett L. Harrelson, 85, former resident of Cedar Rapids, died Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2011, in Rockford, Ill. Graveside services will be held in the spring at Rockton Township Cemetery, Rockton, Ill.
Born June 18, 1925, in Cedar Rapids, the son of Clarence and Frances (Ellison) Harrelson, he married Marilyn J. Fabor on March 14, 1953. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Marine Corps.
He was a member of the Moose Club, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and former member of the Elks, all of Cedar Rapids. Everett was an avid reader and artist. He loved television, especially western type movies. He loved and adored all animals, especially his many family pets.
Survivors include daughter, Dolores (Jim) Speers, Rockton, Ill.; grandchildren, Amber (Jesse) Gottman and Ryan Speers; brothers, Ronald (Lillian) Harrelson, Cedar Rapids, and John (Gloria) Harrelson, Ely.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Marilyn, on Jan. 6, 2010; parents; and sisters, Kathleen Strueble, Mildred Vollbrecht and Dolores Harrelson.

Phyllis M. Hershberger, 70, of Macomb, Ill., formerly of North Liberty, died Monday, Feb. 21, 2011. A celebration of life was held at the Peterseim Funeral Home in Kalona. Burial was at the Sharon Hill Cemetery in Kalona.

Guy McFarland IV

Guy E. McFarland IV, 29, a longtime resident of Iowa City, died Saturday, Feb. 19, 2011 at his home in Denver, Colo.
A Memorial Mass was celebrated Feb. 26 at St. Mary's Catholic Church with Rev. Thom Hennen officiating. Burial was at Oak Hill Cemetery in Coralville.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial be directed to The Regina Foundation to benefit the Regina Boosters Sports and Bleacher Improvement Project or the Colorado Rockies Charities Fund to benefit Colorado youth programs.
Guy was born icon August 25, 1981, in Iowa City, the son of Guy E. and Bonnie (Barnes) McFarland, III. Growing up in Iowa City, Guy attended Regina Catholic Education Center and graduated in 1999. At Regina, he was active in football and track. Guy attended the University of Iowa before working in the sleep medicine industry as a certified sleep medicine technologist. He moved to Denver in 2004 where he recently returned to college.
Guy lived his life to the absolute fullest. He had many friends and was a good friend in exchange. He traveled to country and the world to attend Black Crowes concerts, most recently traveling to San Francisco to attend the final three U.S. concerts before the group disbanded. Guy was the proud owner of Denver Broncos season tickets and attended almost every Colorado Rockies home game.
He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Iowa City.
Guy is survived by his parents; his grandmother, Doris Barnes of Coralville, brother, Ryan (Melissa) Eckhoff and their children, Mia, Neal, Rachel and Roan, all of Iowa City; sister Katie (Mat White) and their children, Evan and Maggie, all of Madison, Wis.; uncles, Al (Lori) Barnes of Sunrise Beach, Mo., John (Marianne) Barnes of Swisher; Jim (Jan) Barnes of Coralville, and Kevin (Lisa) Barnes of Iowa City; aunt, Debra (Bob) Rogers of Iowa City and many cousins.

Visitation will be held Thursday from 3-7 p.m. at Lensing Funeral Service in Iowa City. A parish rosary will begin at 7 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday at 10 a.m. at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church with Reverend Michael Phillips officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery in Iowa City.
