Farrell "Verlee" Andrle
Feb. 22, 2011
Farrell "Verlee" Andrle, 92, of Ely, died Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2011, at Northbrook Manor Care Center in Cedar Rapids.
Verlee was born icon July 11, 1918, the daughter of John and Beatrice (Thompson) Trimble. She married Milo Andrle on Aug. 27, 1940. She attended Iowa State Teachers College after graduating from high school. Verlee taught in rural Toddville and then Honey Grove School near Ely, where she met Milo. She then taught at Hardshell and Jappa schools near Ely. After raising a family, she attended Mount Mercy and Coe colleges and then taught for one-and-a-half years at St. Patrick's and for six years at All Saints, both in Cedar Rapids.
Verlee is survived by three sons, John (Helendale, deceased) Andrle of St. Louis, Mo., Bob (Carol) Andrle of Ely and Michael Andrle of Des Moines; seven grandchildren, John Dale (Julia) Andrle, Rene (Scott) Tedrow, Craig (Becky) Andrle, Marna (Joel) Schutte, Marci (Matt) Whitaker, Clint (Kerrin) Andrle and Luke Andrle; 15 great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Lorraine Trimble of Marion. She was an aunt, cousin, sister-in-law, and friend to many. She will be missed by all.
Verlee was a member of Rebekahs in Ely, Friendship Club of Ely, and Johannas at Ely Presbyterian Church, where she was a member. She enjoyed playing pinochle, doing china painting, and playing the piano. She was known for her home-baked kolaches and cream puffs and all around good cooking.
Verlee was preceded in death by her husband, Milo "Mike" who died April 17, 2001; and daughter-in-law, Helendale, who died Dec. 19, 2010.
Memorials may be directed to the First Presbyterian Church near Ely, 11100 Spanish Rd., Ely, IA 52227 or to Camp Courageous of Iowa, 12007 180th St., Monticello, IA 52310.
Funeral Services were held Feb. 19 at First Presbyterian Church near Ely, with burial following in Rogers Grove Cemetery.

Robert Dahnke
Feb. 22, 2011
Robert "Bob" Dahnke, 61, of North Liberty, died Tuesday evening, Feb. 15, 2011, at home with his family beside him.
Bob chose to be cremated. A celebration of Bob's life was held Feb. 19 at Lensing's Oak Hill in Coralville.
Memorials may be directed to Iowa City Hospice, Johnson County Relay For Life or the Macbride Raptor Project.
Bob was born icon May 22, 1949, in Iowa City, the son of Robert L. and Edith (Evans) Dahnke. Growing up in Iowa City, Bob graduated from Iowa City High School in 1967. Bob married Cindi Kennedy on Feb. 10, 1968, in Iowa City. Bob worked for Moore Business Forms in Iowa City for 25 years. He then operated his own business, Surface Specialists. For the past 15 years, Bob worked as a correctional leadsman at Iowa Medical Correction Center (IMCC) at Oakdale.
He was a member of the Iowa City Eagle's Lodge and the Classy Chassy Cruisers car club.
Both Bob and Cindi volunteered for Johnson County Relay for Life and at the Macbride Raptor Project. Bob and Cindi kept a home in Rotonda, Fla., where for many years they enjoyed the sun, the ocean and the warm weather.
He is survived by his wife Cindi; son Rob (Idaliz Maldonado) of Eden Prairie, Minn.; Bob and Cindi's Alaskan Malamute Kenji; sisters-in-law Laurie (Rick) Barenz of Middle Amana and Sherrie Faas of Coralville; nieces and nephews, Ron and Emily Hobbs and their children Kyle and Quenten, Rachelle (Ron) Flake and their children Tyler and Dustin, Justin (Lindsey) Knottnerus, Taran (Jason) Knottnerus, Kristen (Mark) Kelso and Kari (Dan) Blakeslee and their children, Carter and Quenten.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents and a sister Rita.

Nancy DeLung
Feb. 22, 2011
Nancy Charlene DeLung, 66, of North Liberty, died Monday, Feb. 7, 2011, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.
Nancy was born icon Jan. 30, 1945, in Iowa City, the daughter of Charles and Thelma (Popham) DeLung. She graduated with the City High School class of 1963 and then attended the Career Academy in Milwaukee. She worked in the health profession for many years in the area. Nancy will be remembered for her love of animals, her wit and candid sense of humor, riding her motorcycle, watching old movies and just sharing time with good friends and family.
Her family includes a sister-in-law, Barbara DeLung of Albany, Ga.; two nieces, Debbie (Mark) Reinertson and Teri (Jeff) Mouser; great-niece Willow Mouser; and cousin Linda Popham Vikel of Iowa City.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, William L. DeLung.

L. Dean Redmon
Feb. 22, 2011
L. Dean Redmon, 77, of Cedar Rapids, died peacefully Friday, Feb. 11, 2011, at Valley Regional Medical Center in Brownsville, Texas.
Dean was born icon on Sept. 5, 1933, in Ottumwa, son of Merle and Hazel (Benson) Redmon. He graduated from Roosevelt High School in Cedar Rapids. He served in the United States Army during the Korean conflict running a machine shop in South Korea.
He considered himself a tool and die maker and others saw him as a teacher. He started his tool and die career with New Era Industries in Cedar Rapids. He began his career as a teacher, teaching machine shop and tool and die making at new Area Ten Community College, later to become Kirkwood Community College. He returned to private industry as training manager at Cherry Burrell which manufactured dairy equipment. The company often sent Dean to install the first machines in a new foreign market. He returned to Korea, where he was honored by the Korean government for his many contributions to their dairy industry. He retired from Evergreen, a successor to Cherry Burrell.
Dean was a 50-year plus member of Mizpah Masonic Lodge No. 639 A.F. & A.M., was a 32nd degree mason in the Cedar Rapids Consistory and belonged to the Color Guard Unit in the El Kahir Shrine. He served as the Worshipful Master of Mizpah Lodge in 1965 and Potentate of El Kahir Shrine Temple in 1993. He proudly celebrated his 50th year in Shrine in 2011.
One close friend said of Dean, "you didn't have to know Dean Redmon long before you knew about his children and grandchildren. He loved his two children who he affectionately referred to as 'my boy' and 'my girl.'"
Dean will be fondly remembered by his many, many friends and his wife Shirley (Young); son, Jeff (Cindy) of Roberts, Wisc.; and daughter, Connie (Rick) Buckroyd of Indianola; grandchildren, Benjamin Blackmon, Bobby (Sheena) Buckroyd, Anne (Kyle) Johnson, Thomas (Hattie) Redmon and Katherine Redmon; along with Shirley's son, Marty Schwab and grandson, Jason (Jennifer) Schwab.
Dean had five great-grandchildren and Adalyn Schwab was born icon on Feb. 12, 2011.
Dean is also survived by his sisters, Janice (Ken) Hook of Solon and Karen McMillen of Grinnell; along with many cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his mother Hazel (Perry) McMillen; a brother Franklyn (Doris) McMillen; and a niece Terri Lynn McMillen.
Masonic funeral and memorial services were held Saturday, Feb. 19, at Murdoch Funeral Home in Marion, with a reception following at El Kahir Shrine Temple. Memorials are requested to be made to the El Kahir Shrine Transportation Fund.

Dorothy Vcelka
Feb. 22, 2011
Dorothy G. "Dotty" Vcelka, 97, formerly of Iowa City, died Friday, Feb. 11, 2011, at the Crestview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in West Branch.
There was a period of visitation and celebration of Dotty's life at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service on Feb. 18. Private family graveside services were held at Oakland Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made in Dotty's memory to Iowa City Hospice. Dotty was born icon on Oct. 19, 1913, in Whitestone, Borough of Queens, New York, the fifth child of Hugo and Susan (Sherwood) Ulrich. She graduated from Flushing High School in Flushing, New York, in Jan. 1932. She met Joseph M. Vcelka in Whitestone and they were married on Aug. 12, 1939. They lived in New York and New Jersey before moving to Iowa City in 1978 to be near family. They celebrated their 63rd anniversary in 2002.
Dotty's family include her daughter and son-in-law, Dottie and Alan Frank of Iowa City; grandchildren, David Frank and wife Errin of North Liberty; Allison Corlette and husband, Gordon, of Coralville; and Erik Frank and wife Kathy of Thornton, Colo.; and great-grandchildren, Ruby and Clara (daughters of David and Errin), Joseph (son of Allison and Gordon), and Mikayla (daughter of Erik and Kathy).
Dotty was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph; her parents, Hugo and Susan Ulrich; and her four siblings (Charles Ulrich, Ruby Ashmore, Grace Wiesner, and Walter Ulrich).

Ronald Young
Feb. 22, 2011
Ronald E. Young was born icon on Aug. 18, 1949, in Creston, Iowa, the son of Harold L. and Mary Catherine (Kennedy) Young. Ron died on Jan. 11, 2011, at his home in Sacramento, Calif. following complications from strokes at the age of 61 years.
Ron attended Mount Zion #7 grade school in rural Adams County and graduated from Prescott High School with the class of 1967. Ron attended the University of Iowa, graduating in 1971, and then entered Theological College seminary at Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. On May 24, 1975, Ron was ordained a Catholic priest by Most Rev. Gerald O'Keefe, Bishop of the Davenport Diocese, at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Corning, Iowa, his family's parish. He served the Davenport diocese including parishes in Iowa City, Ottumwa, Eddyville, Charlotte, Villa Nova, Farmington, String Prairie, and Clinton. Ron also served as a liturgical campus minister at Loyola University in Chicago. In 2004, Ron received his Doctor of Psychology in Organizational Development from Alliant International University in Fresno, Cal. He worked with several companies as a consultant and coach, as well as having his own consulting company. Ron was presently an organizational strategy consultant and human resource strategist at CPS Human Resource Services in Sacramento, Cal. Ron also taught organizational development master's program courses for Alliant International University and the University of San Francisco. His gifts of language, both spoken and written, often inspired those who listened and read his words. He was proud of his rural heritage and appreciated the community spirit of the people in the towns in which he lived. He never lost his ability to focus on the strengths of individuals and discover the best in each person. Throughout Ron's life, his family and friends were able to recognize the loyalty, trust, compassion, humor, and concentration he displayed in his personal and professional life.
Preceding Ron in death were his parents: Harold and Mary Catherine Young; his grandparents: Walter and Ethel Young, James and Berenice Kennedy; his uncles and aunts: Carl and Maxine Stewart, Lloyd and Marjorie Young, Dorothy Beard and Billy Cooper, and James Kennedy; and cousin, Mark Kennedy.
Ron is survived by his brother: Douglas Richard Young and his wife Deborah of Snoqualmie, Wash.; sister Catherine Ann Young and friend Kathy Keifer of North Liberty; two nephews: Christopher Young and his wife Michele of Maple Valley, Wash.; Brandon Young and his wife Sandi of Edmonds, Wash.; two nieces, Rosemary and April Young of Snoqualmie, Wash.; two great nieces, Noelle and Lauren Young; aunts and uncles: Bernard and Marjorie Kennedy, Edward and Carla Kennedy, Louis and Kay Kennedy, and Richard and Carol Kennedy; numerous cousins and many friends; including special friends, Jeff and Suzanna Hoye of Sacramento, Calif., who cared for Ron as he worked to recover from his strokes.
Ron is also survived by his devoted companion and great source of happiness, Isaac, his dog.
Mass of Christian Burial and celebration of life for Ron was held at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Corning, Iowa, with interment at Calvary Cemetery in Corning, at a later date.
Memorials may be directed to Alegent Health Mercy Hospital, Hospice Services, Corning, Iowa.

Lenard Armstrong
Feb. 15, 2011
Lenard J. Armstrong, 82, died Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2011, at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids following an extended illness. To honor Lenard's wishes a brief memorial service was held Feb. 12 at St. Stephen's Lutheran Church in Atkins, with the Rev. Douglas Woltemath officiating. Interment was held at St. Stephen's Cemetery near Atkins, with graveside military rites conducted by Adolph H. Schueler American Legion Post 217 and Iowa Military Funeral Honors. Phillips Funeral Home in Vinton is in charge of arrangements.
Lenard was born icon July 30, 1928, in Cedar Rapids, to Elton and Mildred (Yilek) Armstrong. He served his nation in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War and was a member of Adolph H. Schueler American Legion Post 217 of Atkins. On May 7, 1955, he was united in marriage to Alice DeKlotz at St. Stephen's Lutheran Church, Atkins. She preceded him in death on April 27, 1997. Lenard and Dorothy Gillis Rathje were married Jan. 9, 1999, at St. Stephen's Lutheran Church, Atkins.
Lenard farmed in the Atkins area and served as a bus driver in Atkins for the Benton Community School District for 41 years before his retirement in 1992. He was an active member of St. Stephen's Lutheran Church, where he served his congregation as a trustee and as a member of the finance committee. Lenard also was an active member of the Atkins community.
Lenard is survived by his wife, Dorothy of Atkins; his daughters, Kris Armstrong of Atkins, Kim (Gary) Spiess of Lisbon and Kay (Ed) Bartholomew of Montrose; grandchildren, Jenny (Tony) Frey, Nicole and Allison Spiess, Megan and Bryce Bartholomew; three great grandchildren; stepchildren, Marvin (Sandy) Rathje of Anamosa, Melvin (Elaine) Rathje of Macon, Ga., Jeff (Tammy) Rathje of Watkins and Jolene Rathje of North Liberty; step-grandchildren, Melissa (Jeff) Smith, Marsha (David) Wimer, Amanda Rathje, Matt (Johnna) Rathje, Josh (Camilla) Rathje and Adam and Robert Rathje; three step great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and his first wife, he was preceded in death by his sister Patricia Rubin.
A memorial fund has been established.

Carlton, Janis Kay
Janis Kay Carlton, 72 of Cedar Rapids, died Thursday, February 18, 2010 at St. Luke’s Hospital from complications of COPD. Celebration of Life will be 1:30 p.m. Monday at St. James United Methodist Church with Rev. Beth Mary Straw presiding. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Five Seasons Clubhouse, located at 3421 Blairs Ferry Road NE, Cedar Rapids, 52402. Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids in charge of arrangements.
Janis was born icon August 13, 1937 in Greeley, Iowa, the beloved daughter of Floyd and Leta (Allen) Ripple. Janis married Boyd Carlton on May 29, 1976 in Greeley. Janis tended bar for years at the Fire Place and Log Cabin. She retired from Meth-Wick. She enjoyed country music, cards, crocheting, cooking, double diamond machines, fishing with Boyd, and spending time with her grandchildren and friends. She was a member of St James United Methodist Church.
Janis is survived by her husband and loving caregiver, Boyd Carlton; daughter, Julia (Randy) Coons, sons, Blair and Bruce Harbaugh; step children, Kathy (Luke) Durnan, Mike, Marty, Matt (Tina), Mark and Kelly Carlton all of the Cedar Rapids area; the loves of her life: 6 grandchildren, 17 step grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren and 22 step great - grandchildren; a sister and brother in law, Joyce (Eugene) Harbaugh of Manchester; brothers, Dr. Robert Klute of Athens, Georgia, and Henry (Ginny) Battin of Reed Springs, Missouri; brother in law, Gene (Chris) Carlton; former daughter in law Stacy Harbaugh; and beloved friends, Fred and Judy Reel, and the Kula family all of Cedar Rapids.
She was preceded in death by her parents and step mother Lorene Ripple, a brother Bob Battin, grandson Braxton Harbaugh and nephew Kirk Harbaugh.
The family would like to thank Rev. Beth Straw for her support and comfort through out our mother/wife's last days. She went way above and beyond. Dr. Paynter is a gift from God and the staff of St. Luke's UCI unit for their kindness and tender care to our mother/wife and her family. The family would also like to thank St. Luke’s Hospice for their tender care for Janis.

Pudil, Irene Frances
Cemetery: Anderson Cemetery
After residing her entire life within 400 feet of her birthplace, Irene Frances Pudil, 92 of Swisher, passed away from heart disease on Tuesday, February 16, 2010. Services will be 10:00 a.m. Friday, February 19, 2010 at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids, located at 2121 Bowling Street SW. Burial at Anderson Cemetery in Swisher followed by a luncheon served by the auxiliary at the Swisher American Legion. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids.
Irene was born icon April 23, 1917 in Swisher, the only child of Arthur E. and Frances Petrak Marak. Her years of education were spent at the Swisher Elementary School and Grant High School in Cedar Rapids where she graduated in 1935. She always spoke fondly of riding the Crandic interurban to Cedar Rapids at 6:30 in the morning, walking a block to Grant and having to turn on the lights in the school before anyone arrived and then waiting at the depot after school and not arriving home until 7 in the evening. August 23, 1938, she married Edwin J. Pudil also of Swisher. She and Ed spent many enjoyable winters in Florida and summer vacations in Ear Falls, Ontario, Canada at the camp now owned by their granddaughter Gretchen and her husband David. Irene worked for her father in Marak’s General Store, as a switchboard operator at the local telephone company, as an assistant postmaster at the local office (for which she received no salary or benefits), as part owner of Ed’s Tavern in Swisher and as a bookkeeper for Swisher Plumbing Company which she and her husband also owned.
She enjoyed being named Swisher Centennial Queen in 2003 and riding in a Corvette during the parade. Irene was an active member of the Swisher American Legion Auxiliary for many years and donated many hours volunteering there beginning in the 1950’s. She was also an excellent cook and baker and we will all miss her kolaches, hoska, pickles and cream puffs.
Irene is survived by two sons, Brian Pudil and Steve (Lynn) Pudil both of Swisher, six grandchildren, Robin (Gena) Pudil of North Liberty, Gretchen (David) Wetendorf of Ear Falls, Ontario, Canada, Kurtis Pudil of Cedar Rapids, Valerie Pudil of Austin, Texas, Corina Merritt and Chad (Kristin) Pudil both of Cedar Rapids. She also has eight great - grandchildren Kody, Kourtney, Wesley Pudil, Michael and Katie Wetendorf, Kyra and Jenna Merritt and Josie Pudil.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband of 49 years.
The family would like to thank Jennifer, Pam and staff at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy, Dr. Cindy Squires and staff for their gentle and thoughtful understanding care.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be sent to P.O. Box 55, Swisher, Iowa 52338 for distribution to the Swisher American Legion Auxiliary and to the Hospice House.
We will miss you Mom, Grandma and Great-Grandma!
