Phillips, Donald F.
Cemetery: Mt. Vernon Cemetery
Donald F. “Rusty” Phillips, 83 of Solon died Friday, March 10, 2006 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City after a brief illness. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 14, 2006 at Brosh Chapel in Solon. Burial will follow in Mt. Vernon Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at Brosh Chapel in Solon and for an hour prior to services Tuesday at the chapel.
Rusty was born
December 28, 1922 in Ely, the son of John and Adeline Hanssen Phillips. He married Janet Crew and they later divorced. He married Rita Marie Horner in February of 1972.
Rusty is survived by a son Randy (Mary Ann) Phillips of Solon ; a stepdaughter Robin (Bob) Irving of Solon; a stepson Don (Pam) Horner of Hiawatha; grandchildren Teresa, Gina and Patrick Phillips; great-grandchildren Jesse Reese, Jamie Laschanzky, and Evan Schneider; step-grandchildren April Grimm and Andrea Irving; step-great-grandson Carter Grimm; a niece Carol Ulch and a cousin John (Martha) Phillips.
Rusty owned and operated many businesses in the area, including the Country Café. He liked people and having coffee with the “old guys”. He was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed hunting and fishing in his early years. He followed the Solon sport teams and watched and listened to many games on the television and radio. Rusty said he was glad he lived long enough to see both Solon Boys and Girls Basketball teams make it to State. Rusty enjoyed the time spent with family including his weekly visits with Rocksy, and later Carol.
Preceding him in death were his parents John and Adeline Phillips, his wife Rita, a sister Rocksy Ulch.

Robovsky, Bessie Nemec
Cemetery: Czech National Cemetery
Bessie Nemec Robovsky, 93 of Cedar Rapids, died Wednesday, March 1, 2006 at Mercy Medical Center after a short illness. Services will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, March 6 at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids with Rev. William Harnish presiding. Burial will follow in Czech National Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. on Sunday, March 5 at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids and for an hour prior to services Monday at the chapel. A reception will be held immediately following the burial in the Oak Room at Cottage Grove Place.
Bessie was born
November 17, 1912 in Cedar Rapids the daughter of Joseph and Anna Nemec Sr. She attended Czech School as a youngster and was fluent in the language. Bessie married Charles Robovsky and they worked together for many years in their business Robo Plumbing in Cedar Rapids.
Bessie was extremely proud of her Czech heritage. She was involved in many organizations, including Western Fraternal Life Association where she served as an officer, Sokol, Eagle, American Legion and the Czech Museum. Bessie loved dancing polkas, listening to Czech music, attending festivals, being a homemaker, and her real passion was in the kitchen. She loved to bake especially kolaches.
Bessie is survived by her nieces and nephews, including Richard Nemec and Don (JoAnn) Nemec all of Cedar Rapids; great nephews Joseph Nemec and Justin Nemec; great-great-nieces and nephews Rachel Anne, Jeffrey Joseph, and Channing Elizabeth Nemec.
Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband Charles who died in 1995, a brother Joseph Nemec Jr., and a great niece Julie Ann Nemec.

Van Winkle, Joann Kay
Joann Kay Van Winkle, 63, of Cedar Rapids died Monday night, February 20, 2006 at Mercy Medical Center following a sudden illness.
Funeral Services will be held at 1:30 pm on Friday, February 24, 2006 at Brosh Chapel, Cedar Rapids. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 pm on Thursday at Brosh Chapel, Cedar Rapids.
Joann was born
on April 30, 1942 in Creston, Iowa the daughter of Harold and Fern (Pingree) Thompson. She married Darrell Van Winkle on August 25, 1961 in Creston. Darrell preceded her in death on July 4, 1986. She was a retired office manger having worked for the Cedar Rapids Schools for eleven years and later retiring from the Eastern Iowa Airport. Joann lived for her husband, kids, and grandkids. She especially enjoyed attending her grandkids’ sporting events. Whatever they were involved with, so was Joann.
She is survived by her daughter Teresa (Rich) Cooling of Cedar Rapids; son Rod (Janet) Van Winkle of Marion; and six grandchildren Christine, Chelsea, Cheyanna, Cory, Shay, and Christopher.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.
A memorial fund has been established in her name.
Spores Sr., Harold E.
Cemetery: Czech National Cemetery
Harold E. Spores Sr., 80, of Cedar Rapids died Saturday morning, February 4, 2006 at home following a lengthy illness.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am on Tuesday, February 7, 2006 at Brosh Chapel, Cedar Rapids with Reverend Rob Hollowell, officiating. Interment will follow at Czech National Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 pm on Monday at Brosh Chapel, Cedar Rapids.
Harold was born
on October 12, 1925 in Cedar Rapids, the son of Edward and Libbie (Medulan) Spores. He served in the US Navy during WWII. Harold married Maxine White on May 26, 1945 in Cedar Rapids. He worked for Iowa Steel and Metal Fabricators and also owned and operated his own business S&S Pickup Service. Harold was a member of Christian Missionary Alliance Church for many years.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years Maxine Spores of Cedar Rapids; children Arlene (Thomas) Barrow of Ely, Myra (Eugene) Barrette of Lowden, Harold (Karol) Spores Jr. of Cedar Rapids, Jerry (Debbie) Spores of Cedar Rapids, Stanley Spores of Mount Vernon, John (Sheryl) Spores of Wyoming, and Bill Spores of Des Moines; twenty-two grandchildren; forty-one great-grandchildren; and a sister Anna Bruce of Cedar Rapids.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother John, a sister Florence, and a great-grandson.
A memorial fund has been established for Mercy Hospice and Camp Courageous.
Bernard Jr., Wayman H.
Cemetery: Oak Hill Cemetery
Wayman H. Bernard Jr., 54, of Cedar Rapids went to be with the Lord Monday, January 16, 2006 following a sudden illness.
A Home Going Celebration will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, January 21, 2006 at Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church, Cedar Rapids with Brother Todd Bernard, officiating. Interment will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 pm on Friday at Brosh Chapel, Cedar Rapids and one hour prior to services Saturday at the church.
Wayman was born
on February 2, 1951 in Memphis, Tennessee the son of Wayman and Sallie (Matthews) Bernard Sr. He married Carole Levy on August 3, 1974 in Cedar Rapids. Wayman worked as a buyer for Evergreen Packaging Company in Cedar Rapids. He was a member of Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church and the NAACP. Wayman was very athletic and was a cycling and jogging enthusiast. He also enjoyed carpentry and his many home improvement projects.
Survivors include his wife of 31 years Carole Bernard of Cedar Rapids; daughter Michelle Bernard of New York City; sons Todd (Gertrude) Bernard, and Wayman Bernard III both of Louisville, Kentucky; parents Wayman and Sallie Bernard Sr. of Memphis, Tennessee; grandchildren Hilton, Hilary, Holly, and Halston; sisters Gwen Bernard of Marion, Delois Albright, Sandra (Stewart) White, and Vicki (Gerald) Paige all of Memphis, Tennessee; brothers Vernon (Rose) Bernard, and Ray (Lois) Bernard both of Memphis, Tennessee, Michael (Jarette) Bernard of Stone Mountain, Georgia, and Darryl (Barb) Bernard of Cedar Rapids; and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
A memorial fund has been established for The American Diabetes Association.
Kratzberg, Michael
Michael Kratzberg, 48, of Cedar Rapids, died Monday evening January 2, 2006 at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Iowa City.
Memorial services will be held at 2:00 pm on Friday at Eden United Church of Christ with Rev. Glenn Hunt, officiating. Brosh Chapel, Cedar Rapids is assisting with arrangements.
Michael was born
on July 12, 1957 in Des Moines the son of Edward and Phyllis (Norris) Kratzberg. He was a veteran of the US Navy. He worked as a cook at Diner on First for the last six years.
Survivors include his partner Dick Dixon; his parents Edward Kratzberg and Phyllis VanZandt; sisters Kathy, Sandy, and Jennifer; and brothers Doug, Kenny, and Steve.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents.

Andersen, Betty Ann
Cemetery: Oakland Cemetery
Betty Ann Andersen, 56, of Solon, died Tuesday, January 2, 2007 at her home surrounded by her family after a strong and courageous fight with cancer. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, January 6, 2007 at Brosh Chapel in Solon with Pastor Tom Carver presiding. Burial will follow in Oakland Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Brosh Chapel in Solon and for an hour prior to services Saturday at the chapel.
Betty was born
March 17, 1950 in Spencer, IA the daughter of Preston and Ruth Freemen Stone. Betty grew up on a farm in Webb, IA where she attended school and graduated from South Clay High School in 1969. She later moved to Cedar Rapids where she worked at Square D for 34 years and made many life long friends. Her passions included traveling, gardening, being surrounded by family and friends, and spending time with her granddaughter. Her smile and outgoing personality will be forever remembered by the people that loved her.
Betty is survived by her two daughters Angela McWilliams and husband Joe, and Corinna Egge and husband Mike; her granddaughter Alexandra Egge; their father Russ Andersen, her fiancé Bob Pedersen, her two sisters Mary Norgaard and husband David, and Linda Johnson and husband John; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by both parents, Preston and Ruth Stone.
