Cemetery: Cedar Memorial Cemetery
Everett C. Spidle, 80 of Ely, died Tuesday, July 8, 2008 at Mercy Medical Center following a brief illness. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, July 11, 2008 at Brosh Chapel in Solon, with the Rev. Jeff Borgwardt presiding. Burial will follow in Cedar Memorial Cemetery, Cedar Rapids. Visitation will be Thursday, July 10, 2008 at Brosh Chapel in Solon from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Brosh Chapel in Solon is in charge of arrangements.
Everett was born
on June 1, 1928 in Cedar County near Mechanicsville, the son of Chester and Bertha Craig Spidle. He married Lorraine A. Adams on February 6, 1948 at The First Lutheran Church, Cedar Rapids. They went on to raise five children and have lived at their current address for almost 46 years.
Everett farmed for six years and retired from Greyhound Lines after 30 years. He also did roofing for 45 years. Everett proudly served 41 years on the Ely Fire Department, was a 50 year member of the Ely Odd Fellow Lodge and member of the Ely Town and Country Club.
His hobbies included collecting fire memorabilia, bowling, gardening, his fish pond, his 1932 Ford Model A fire truck, golfing, attending State Fire Convention and making wine which he loved sharing with family and friends. He also enjoyed Iowa Hawkeye football and basketball games and his Wednesday morning breakfast group.
Everett and Lorraine spent 21 winters in Donna, Texas where they and many friends enjoyed dancing, shuffleboard, playing cards and trips to Mexico.
Everett is survived by his wife of 60 years Lorraine, sons Duane (Susan) Spidle, Douglas (Sandra) Spidle, Kevin Spidle and Scott (Kay) Spidle; daughter Sheryl (Gary) Schulte; grandchildren Kimberly Schulte (fiancé Francisco Martinez), Chad (Michelle) Schulte, Roy (Kathy) Spidle and Brian Kessler; great-grandchildren Cory Schulte and Chenoa Kessler.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Willard Arthur Spidle and Orville Spidle; Sisters Velma Beaver and Vesta Spidle; brother-in-law Elbert Beaver; sister-in-law Vivian Spidle and two infant grandchildren and one infant great-grandchild.
Everett truly enjoyed his family including a very special niece, Connie Throckmorton.
Everett will be dearly missed by many friends and family that were touched by his life.
A memorial fund has been established in his name.
Volesky, Skylar Kristine
Cemetery: Blain Cemetery
Skylar Kristine Volesky, 2 the daughter of Brianna Volesky and Lee Muldoon, laid to rest on Saturday, July 12 at St. Lukes Hospital in Cedar Rapids from a sudden illness. Celebration of Life services will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, July 17 at Brosh Chapel in Solon with Rev. Brenda Peconge presiding. Burial will follow in Blain Cemetery near Swisher. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, at Brosh Chapel in Solon and for an hour prior to services Thursday at the chapel.
Skylar was born
September 29, 2005 in Cedar Rapids. She is survived by her mother Brianna Volesky and Lee Muldoon of Coggon, maternal grandparents Mark and Lori Huenefeld of Ely; maternal great-grandparents Bill and Karen Volesky of Swisher and Shirley Jones of Cedar Rapids; paternal grandparents Dale and Laurie Muldoon of Coggon and Deniel and Bill Inman of Peoria, Illinois; a brother Will Inman; aunts Ashli Huenefeld of Cedar Rapids, Alicia Huenefeld of Marion, Hailie Huenefeld of Ely, Aubrey Coder of Cedar Rapids, Kaylyn Muldoon of Coggon, Rissa Inman of Peoria, Illinois, and Becky Inman of Oxford; Robby (Aislynn) Muldoon and Keegan Muldoon all of Coggon; and her best friend Faith Muldoon. She was preceded in death by her uncle Kori Huenefeld and a great uncle Brian Volesky

Kriz, Marilyn Rae
Marilyn Rae Kriz, 55 of Solon, died Tuesday, July 15, 2008 at her home after a long courageous battle with ALS. A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Monday, July 21 at St. John Lutheran Church in Ely with Rev. Jeff Borgwardt presiding. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Brosh Chapel in Solon. Visitation will also be an hour prior to services Monday at the church.
Marilyn was born
January 10, 1953 in Cedar Rapids, the daughter of Marvin G. and Arlene M. Devine Merck. She married Robert J. Kriz on May 2, 1975 in Cedar Rapids. Marilyn enjoyed gardening. She enjoyed sewing, crafts, was a great cook, and had a deep love for her family. She was known for her wonderful sense of humor. Marilyn was employed for over 21 years with the Iowa City Parks and Recreation. She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Ely.
Marilyn is survived by her husband Bob Kriz; her father Marvin Merck of Anamosa; children Heather (Bryce) Plathe of Cedar Rapids and Ryan (Kelly) Kriz of Solon; step-daughter Katie (Harry) King of Raeford, North Carolina; siblings Carol Leonhardt of Marion, Mike (Linda) Merck of Marion, and Linda (Leonard) Thompson of Anamosa; 5 grandchildren, Ryan, Delaney, Avery, Piper, and Gavin as well as many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her mother Arlene Merck, a brother Nile Merck, and a nephew Jake Merck-Thompson.
Memorials may be directed to Iowa City Hospice, Muscular Dystrophy Association ALS Division, and or to St. John Lutheran Church.

Whittom, Mary
Cemetery: Shueyville Cemetery
Mary Phillips Whittom, 81 of Cedar Rapids, died Wednesday, July 16, 2008 at Mercy Medical Center. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 22, 2008 at Brosh Chapel in Solon. Burial will follow in Shueyville Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at Brosh Chapel in Solon.
Mary was born
September 3, 1926 in Davis County, the daughter of Raymond and Orpha (Gooden) Phillips. She married Vernon E. Whittom on July 29, 1945 in Missouri.
Mary is survived by her sons Larry Whittom, Wayne (Judy) Whittom of Cedar Rapids, and Gary (Tresa) Whittom of Ely; grandchildren: Amy (Howard) Cobb, Kyle Whittom, and Cody Whittom; and great-grandchildren: Zachary Cobb and Isabella Cobb.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Vernon Whittom on August 23, 1996; two brothers; and a sister.

Hangartner, Doris Irma
Cemetery: Postville Cemetery
Doris Irma Hangartner, 92 of Cedar Rapids, died Sunday, July 27, 2008 at Heritage Nursing and Rehab Center. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, August 1, 2008 at Hope Lutheran Church. Visitation will be an hour prior to services at the Church. Burial will follow in Postville Cemetery.
Doris was born
December 29, 1915 in Elgin, the daughter of Harry and Della (Mathys) Miller. She married Oscar Hangartner on December 18, 1940 in Elgin.
Doris is survived by her daughters Verlene Hangartner and Elaine (Clair) Osborne of Cedar Rapids; four grandchildren: Elizabeth Conley, Beverly (Jim) Gieseman, James (Ceci) Osborne, Brenda (Joshua) Hammitt; 8 great-grandchildren; and sisters Violet Hangartner and Margaret Gage.
She was preceded in death by her husband Oscar; her parents Harry and Della Miller; and her siblings: Gertrude, Clifton, Gladys, Clarence, Shirley, June, and La Vonne.

Zbanek, Jean Ruth

Jean Ruth Zbanek, 84 of Ely, died Monday, July 28, 2008 at Mercy Hallmar from a brief illness. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 31, 2008 at St. John Lutheran Church in Ely with Rev. Jeff Borgwardt presiding. Burial will follow in Rogers Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at St. John Lutheran Church in Ely and for an hour prior to services Thursday at the church. Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids is in charge of arrangements.
Jean was born
October 27, 1923 in Johnson County, the daughter of Milo and Mina Minor Randall. She married Joseph Henry Zbanek on October 29, 1941 at the First Presbyterian Church, near Ely. She was a rural route mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service for over 20 years. She was involved with the St. John Dorcas Society, Ely American Legion Auxillary, VFW Auxillary, and the Ely Fire Department. Jean enjoyed gambling, bird watching, gardening, flowers and meeting her friends each evening for cocktails. Jean loved to spend time with her family and friends.
Jean is survived by her children Linda (Fonce) Landuyt, Bonnie (Paul) Slezak and Randy (Kelly) Zbanek all of Ely; 5 grandchildren Jeff (Darcey) Landuyt, Bret (Kellie) Voss, Jodi (Kevin) James, Kami and Kassi Zbanek, six great-grandchildren Kimberly, Alyssa, Keegan, Bailey, Shaffer, and Shelby; and a sister Edna Davis of Hiawatha.
Jean is preceded in death by her husband Joseph, a great-granddaughter Allanah, and a brother in law Mick Davis.

Vondracek, Jean Marie
Cemetery: St. John's Cemetery
Jean Marie Vondracek, 67, of Cedar Rapids, died Thursday, August 14, 2008, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy after an extended illness. Funeral Mass will be 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, August 19, 2008 at St. Ludmila’s Catholic Church with Fr. Chris Podhajsky presiding. Burial will follow in St. John’s Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at St. Ludmila’s Catholic Church, where there will be a 7 p.m. rosary. Visitation will also be an hour prior to services Tuesday at the church.
Jean was born
January 26, 1941, in Cedar Rapids, the daughter of Eugene and Clara Dunbar Bennett. She married Joseph R. Vondracek Jr. on June 10, 1961, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids. Jean started her career at Collins Radio and later joined her husband in operating Vondracek’s Meat Market and JV Truck Shine. In 1993 they opened the first Blimpie’s franchise in Iowa. In her retirement Jean worked as a special-needs bus attendant for Cedar Rapids Community School District.
Jean was a member of the Czech Heritage Association, Sokol of Cedar Rapids, First Catholic Slovak Ladies Association, Prokop Velky Lodge #137, National Czech Museum and Library, African American Museum, the Five Seasons Jim Beam Bottle Club, and Jim Beams’ International Bottle Club.
Jean is survived by her son, Joseph R. (Karen) Vondracek III of Hiawatha; daughters, Judy Vondracek of Cedar Rapids, Joanne (Brian) Ulch of Solon, and Janice Vondracek of Cedar Rapids; grandchildren Lauren and Mia Vondracek and Evan, Owen, and Ethan Ulch; and her brother Robert Bennett of Kentucky. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Joseph R. Vondracek Jr. on September 7, 2004, and a brother Harold Bennett.
Jean cherished her family and friends and loved spending time with her grandchildren. She and her husband Joe were avid Hawkeye, Cubs and Packers fans and tailgaters. They attended games with their close friends for many years as well as sponsoring JV Truck Shine 12” and 16” men softball teams.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Doug, Krista, Marylou, Sandra, and Stephanie of Home Health Watch, the Dennis and Donna Oldorf staff, especially Pat and Jodie for making Jean’s final days comfortable. The family would also like to thank the staff and friends from St. Luke’s Living Center West.
