Benson, Carol Ann
Cemetery: Czech National Cemetery
Carol Ann Steggall Benson, 55 of Fairfax, died Tuesday, August 19 at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy from a lengthy battle with cancer. Services will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, August 23, 2008 at Clover Ridge United Methodist Church in Walford, with burial to follow in Czech National Cemetery in Cedar Rapids. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Clover Ridge United Methodist Church and from 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday at the church. Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids is in charge of arrangements.
Carol was born
November 27, 1952 in West Bend, Wisconsin, the daughter of Walter and Margaret Milligan Steggall Sr. She graduated from Jefferson High School in 1971. She received her Bachelor of Education from Cornell College in 1975, and her Masters Degree in Counseling from the University of Iowa. She taught physical education at Washington High School in Vinton. Carol worked as an Elementary School counselor in Solon and at Cedar Rapids Nixon and Grant Schools. The last few years Carol and Ryan started a concession business selling Tropical Sno and Lemonade at local fairs and town festivals. Carol was an active member of Clover Ridge United Methodist Church in Walford and attended a weekly small group Bible study. Carol really enjoyed working on vacation bible school at Clover Ridge. Over the years Carol has enjoyed many different activities, especially playing cards with a Womans Card Club, gardening, camping, boating, golfing, hiking, jogging, and sailing.
Carol is survived by her husband Ryan, a brother Walter (Michele) Steggall Jr. of Ely, six nieces and nephews, Chase Steggall, Shana (Randy) Staab, Craig (Karla) Benson, Carrie Benson, Jared (Jennifer) Benson, and Lorissa (Justin) Green.
Carol is preceded in death by her parents and grandparents.
A memorial fund has been established in her name.
The family would like to give a special thank you to Iowa City Hospice and the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy and the Holden Cancer Center for the love, care and support for Carol during the past few years.

Louise Ziegler, 96, of Silvis, IL formerly of Guttenberg and Monona, Iowa died Saturday, April 24, 2004, at the Illini Restorative Care Center, Silvis, IL following a long illness. She was born
July 15, 1907, at Queens, NY. She came to Iowa on the orphan train from Queens. Louise was united in marriage to Weber F. Ziegler at the Little Brown Church in Nashua on October 1, 1925. They operated the City Service Station in Monona until 1950. They moved to Moline, IL, and in 1965, they moved to Guttenberg. She also lived with family members over the years. Survivors include three sons, Weber (Vera Mae) Ziegler of Silvis, IL, Donald (Mary Jo) Ziegler of East Moline, IL and Wayne (Aurelle) Ziegler of Davenport; two daughters, Betty Ellis of Moline, IL and Wilma (Paul) Barnhart of Guttenberg; nineteen grandchildren; twenty-eight great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband on July 19, 1986, a son, Darwin, on July 15, 2001 and a son-in-law, Lloyd 'Curly' Ellis.
Torres Jr., Agustin

Agustin Torres Jr., son of Dezerae S. Redwing and Agustin Torres Sr. died August 24, 2008 at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.
Agustin is survived by his parents, a sister Selena Torres of Cedar Rapids; maternal grandparents Michael and Tina Riechard of Cedar Rapids, paternal grandparents Victoria and Juan Torres of Mexico.
Graveside services will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, August 29 at Oak Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids, temporarily located at 3100 F Avenue NW.

Waller, Karl E.
Cemetery: Oak Hill Cemetery
Karl Eugene Waller, 55, died on Wednesday, August 27, 2008, at St. Luke’s Hospital following a lengthy battle with cancer. Services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 6, at Word of Faith Pentecostal Church of God in Christ, 2325 16th Avenue SW. Dr. Damian M. Epps, Sr. Pastor of Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church will preside. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday at Word of Faith Pentecostal Church of God in Christ and for one hour prior to services on Saturday at the church. Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids is in charge of arrangements.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his two sisters, Paulette (James) Clark and Delores Davis of Cedar Rapids; three brothers, Olen (Norma) Gibson of Blue Springs, MO, Landy Waller III of Phoenix, AZ, and Ralph (Delores) Becicka of Cedar Rapids as well as many nieces and nephews. Karl was preceded in death by his parents.
Karl was born
October 26, 1952, in Cedar Rapids, the son of L. G. Waller and Magnolia Hurst Waller. He graduated from Washington Sr. High School in 1971 where he lettered all three years in both football and wrestling. Karl was able to attend the University of Nebraska for only one year before being drafted into the service during the Viet Nam war. He continued wrestling throughout his service career winning championships. After his service years, Karl qualified for the Olympic Trials in wrestling. He was inducted into the Washington Athletic Hall of Fame on February 18, 2005. In 1981 Karl also obtained an Associates degree in Criminal Justice.
Karl worked for Quaker Oats, Hy-Vee stores and Mercy Hospital before becoming ill. He was a member of Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church where he served as an Usher and was also a member of the Baptist Laymen. Karl once wrote he owes all that he accomplished in his life to “the Grace of God” and to the guidance and wisdom to his mother and step father, Charles Fields. Christianity was very important to him. Karl’s favorite hobby was attending sporting events, especially those nephews and nieces participated in. His best buddy was his Dog “Goldie.” Goldie has a new home with a close family friend, Carole Simmons.
Karl was very close to and loved his family deeply. His family continues to feel this same deep love for Karl. His presence will be missed by all who knew him.

Brickner, Betty A.

Betty Arlene Brickner, 82 of Cedar Rapids, died Wednesday, September 17, 2008 at St. Luke’s Hospital. Memorial services will be 11:00 a.m. Monday at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids, temporarily located at 3100 F Avenue NW. Visitation will be an hour prior to services Monday at Brosh Chapel. Inurnment will follow in Czech National Cemetery.
Betty was born
November 6, 1925 in Mitchell, South Dakota, the daughter of Anders and Katherine Steensgaard. She married Vernon Brickner on August 24, 1944 in Solon. Betty enjoyed gardening, flea markets, playing cards and African violets.
Betty is survived by her children, Mary Jo (Jerry) Wolf, and Mike (Maxine) Brickner all of Cedar Rapids; grandchildren, Teresa (Robin) Stillwill, John (Tammy) Sybil, Robert Sybil; and her sister Dagmar Kaufman of Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Vernon on February 7, 1981, and her sisters Violet Seeman and Pat Steensgaard; a brother Dick Steensgaard.

Buresh, Martha Mary

Martha Mary (Blazek) Buresh, 89, of Cedar Rapids, died Tuesday, October 14, 2008 at Mercy Medical Center. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, October 17 at First Presbyterian Church, near Ely with Rev. Heather Hayes presiding. Burial will follow in Buresh Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids, temporarily located at 3100 F Avenue NW and for an hour prior to services Friday at the church.
Martha was born
January 27, 1919 in rural Cedar Rapids, the daughter of Edward and Ludmilla (Popelka) Blazek. She married Edwin W. Buresh on June 29, 1937 at the manse of the First Presbyterian Church, near Ely, where she and her family have been faithful members all of their lives. Martha loved life and loved children, especially her own. She was proud to teach them of her and her husband’s full Czech heritage. Martha lived by her mother’s mottos of, “be kind to everyone” and, “it takes less muscles to smile than it does to frown.” She taught that lesson to all around her. Martha was an excellent cook and fantastic kolache baker who prepared and served lunch to over 125 employees of the People’s Bank (Norwest Bank) in Cedar Rapids on a daily basis for many years. Prior to that she delighted the deli customers of the Me-Too food stores and worked at her husband’s side on their Century farm.
She was a loving Sunday School teacher for over 35 years, a 4-H leader, Farm Bureau Women’s and College Circle Club member, member of the church’s Johanna Society, served as ruling elder of her church and on many church committees, she received an award from the Presbytery of East Iowa, she was a volunteer at the College Community School district and had preserved the original Prairie school on the farm.
Martha is survived by her children, Dale (Betty) Buresh, Dennis (Mary Ann) Buresh and Diane (Jeff) Reist all of rural Cedar Rapids; eight grandchildren, Scott (Cindy) Buresh of Utah, Randy (Rachel) Buresh of rural Cedar Rapids, Brian Buresh of Cedar Rapids, Brad (Cheri) Buresh of Walford, Brenda (David) Lindemann of Solon, Dawn (Mike) DeMean of Anamosa, and Lauren and Hailee Reist of rural Cedar Rapids; 15 great grandchildren; 2 great great grandchildren; her sister Elizabeth Bedell; and 9 nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 62 ½ years, Edwin Buresh; and her eldest son Richard and his wife Eutona Buresh.

Crosheck, Marie Anna
Cemetery: St. Mary's Cemetery, Newport Township of Johnson County
Marie Anna Crosheck, 92, of rural Solon, died Thursday, October 16, 2008 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City from heart failure. Funeral Mass will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, October 20, 2008 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Solon with Fr. Michael Phillips and Fr. David Wilkening presiding. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Newport Township. Visitation will be from 4 until 7 p.m. Sunday at Brosh Chapel in Solon, where there will be a 7 p.m. rosary.
Marie was born
January 17, 1916 in Solon, the daughter of Frank F. and Mary A. (Brickner) Kral. She married Eugene “Gene” Crosheck on August 25, 1937 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Iowa City. Marie and Gene were married 63 years. Gene passed away May 9, 2001.
Marie was a mother, homemaker, and an active partner in the family farm. She still lived on the farm and treasured her independence. Marie will be remembered for her love of reading and her creative artwork on the computer. She was a wonderful cook- her kolaches and pies will be fondly recalled. She liked songbirds, poultry and her barn cats. She had a green thumb with vegetables and flowers. She enjoyed fishing and eating the fish she caught. Marie made a lot of handiwork by sewing, crocheting and embroidering. Her creations will be treasured. She loved going to play pinochle and euchre with longtime friends. She regularly attended Saturday mass where she visited with her special group of friends. Even though she was a longtime member of St. Wenceslaus, she also attended Tuesday mass and potluck at St. Mary’s in Solon. She was a member of the National Catholic Society of Foresters and prayed the rosary daily. Her thoughtfulness and care for friends and family will be long remembered. Her bright spirit and open heart showed others what it meant to live a life of loving kindness.
Marie is survived by her sons and their wives: James and Helen Crosheck and George and Eugenia “Gina” Crosheck; grandchildren: Mary Stietz, Ann (Randy) Hewitt, John Crosheck, Michael (Christin) Crosheck, Elizabeth (Brian) Globokar, Theresa (Adam) Bonnema, Sharon Crosheck (Jacob Young), and Joseph (Jennifer) Crosheck; step-granddaughter Heather Quinn; great-grandchildren: Matthew and Kathryn Stietz, Stephen and Jennifer Hewitt, Andrew, Timothy and Abigail Globokar, Olivia Bonnema, and Zoe, Kayla, and Owen Young; step-great-grandchildren Nicole McGee and Anthony Quinn; and extended family, John and Phyllis Connelly, their daughter Rebecca and her family.
Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband, an infant daughter, Marian, her brother Joseph W. Kral, and a daughter-in-law, Kathleen MacLean Crosheck.
