Vernon John Max Hoth, 76, of Farmersburg, died Friday, September 29, 2006, at the Central Community Hospital in Elkader, following a sudden illness.

Vernon was the son of Elmer and Esther (Bahls) Hoth and was born icon June 8, 1930, on a farm south of Clayton Center in Read Township. He was baptized August 31, 1930, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church at Garnavillo by Rev. K. Wm. Braun. He was confirmed April 12, 1944, at the Evangelical and Reformed Church in Elkader by Rev. Paul Kitterer. He attended Hanover and Bowden Schools.

Vernon entered the U.S. Marine Corps on April 29, 1952, and was discharged as rank of Corporal on February 25, 1954. On May 10, 1956, he was united in marriage with Geneva Marmann. Four children were born icon to this union. Farming was his life.

Vernon was a member of the St. Olaf Legion Unit 388 and a Farmersburg Township trustee. He sold Archer Oil for several years. He enjoyed fishing, card clubs, gardening and doing woodworking. Vernon enjoyed spending time with his family and he was blessed to celebrate fifty years of marriage with his loving wife. They went on several vacations, recently returning from a seven day trip out west. Vernon and Gen enjoyed playing bingo and pinochle.

Survivors include his wife, Geneva; his four children and their spouses, Karen and Don Martindale, Monona, Brad and Brenda Hoth, Farmersburg, Deb and Jerry Neuhaus, Monona and Jim and Kathleen Hoth, Marion; ten grandchildren, Nathan Martindale, Cedar Rapids, Ryan Martindale, Monona, Brett Hoth, Dodgeville, WI, Kelly Hoth and fiance, Jake Shaw, Farmersburg; Chad Hoth, Farmersburg, Justin Neuhaus, Monona; Joshua Neuhaus, Cedar Falls; Stacey Neuhaus, Cedar Rapids, Branden and Jamie Hoth, Marion, and one great-granddaughter, Ashley Shaw, Farmersburg; two sisters, Marlene Marmann, Elkader and Ila Mae (Ronald) Mueller, Monona; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Janice and Jim Eno, St. Olaf, Elvera Palas, Elkader, Ray Marmann, Jr. and special friend, Lu Phelps, Farmersburg, Nancy Marmann, Hiawatha, Betty Marmann, Elkader, Don and Shirley Marmann, Farmersburg; one aunt, Anita Staade, Garnavillo and many relatives and friends.

Vernon was preceded in death by his parents; his in-laws, Ray and Pearl Marmann; one grandson, Danny Martindale; one brother, Eugene Hoth; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, John Palas, Margaret Marmann, Vurnell Marmann, Everett Marmann and Alan Dale Marmann.

Herbert Herman Friedlein

Herbert Herman Friedlein, 83, of Farmersburg, died suddenly at his home on Friday, September 29, 2006. He was born icon August 8, 1923, to Herman and Ada (Burghardt) Friedlein in rural Boardman Township, Elkader. He grew up on a farm in rural mendon Township, McGregor, where he attended the rural school. He was confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church in McGregor by Rev. H.H. Kirchman on May 28, 1939. His memory verse was John 2:15. As a youth he was active in his church.

Herbert was drafted in the US Army on January 7, 1943. He served overseas eight months on the China-Burma Theater of Asia. He was honorably discharged on November 12, 1945. He was united in marriage to Inez Leuchtenmacher on June 10, 1946 at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Elkader by Rev. W. Tolson. Following the service he resumed his ambition for farming and did so for thirty-eight years. He bought the Torkelson family farm in 1952, and retired to Farmersburg in 1984. He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Farmersburg, was a member of the choir and had served on the church council. He was a Farm Bureau Township director. Herbert enjoyed fishing, crocheting, gardening, singing and spending time with his family.

Survivors include his wife, Inez Friedlein, Farmersburg; his children, Linda (Kenneth) Staff, Monona, Larry (Linda) Friedlein, Farmersburg and Lois (John) Storbeck, Elkader; grandchildren, Eric (Tricia), Matthew (Angela), Kory (Lori) Staff, Allison (Jeremy) Fuelling, Aaron (Danielle) Friedlein, Jennifer (James) Gundacker and Stacey (Joshua) Embretson; great-grandchildren, Katie, Maggie, Olivia, Elaine, Michael, Sara and Eva; a brother, Emil Friedlein, Lancaster, WI and four sisters-in-law, Ellen Bente, Elkader, Kathryn Leuchtenmacher, Waukon, Betty Leuchtenmacher, Elkader and Lorna Friedlein, Monona.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Floyd and one in infancy; granddaughter, Pamela Storbeck and three brothers-in-law, Clifford and Floyd Leuchtenmacher and Leighton Bente.

Clifford John "Jack" Newton
March 31, 1926 - September 28, 2006

Clifford John Newton was born icon March 31, 1926, in Waterloo, Iowa, the son of Artell and Mildred (Mishak) Newton. He was raised and educated in the area graduating from Our Lady of Victory Catholic Academy in Waterloo in 1944. He entered the United States Army on July 21, 1944, and was honorably discharged on July 7, 1946, as a Staff Sergeant. He received the American Theatre Service Medal, Meritorious Unit Award, Victory Medal and Good Conduct Medal. He then attended Iowa State Teacher’s College in Cedar Falls. Jack was united in marriage to Esther Thraenert on May 7, 1949, in Waterloo. They were blessed with seven children and many foster children. Jack worked for his father as a painter and went to work for the federal government in 1966, retiring from the Department of Labor on August 31, 1989. Jack died at his home on Lake Delhi on Thursday morning, September 28, 2006, of liver cancer. He was eighty years of age. Jack enjoyed spending time with family and hobbies of fishing, woodworking, furniture refinishing, crossword puzzles, and gambling at Diamond Jo Casino. Survivors include his wife Esther Newton of Delhi; six children, Gary (Vicki) Newton of Davenport, Jackie ( Mark Kintzle) Newton of Earlville, Becky (Patrick) Saunders of Eldridge, Michael (Laurie) Newton of Suaharita, Arizona, Susan (Mike) Kershner of Emmett, Idaho, Denise (Dan) Cook of Robins, three foster children, Kathy Mata of Davenport, Edith (Mike) Vaughn of Davenport, and Cindy (Byron) Pelton of Lexington, Kentucky; 16 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and eight foster grandchildren; two brothers, Bill Newton of Menassis, Virginia, and Paul (Gladys) Newton of Las Vegas, Nevada; two sisters, Carol (Dave) Koch of Marquette, Michigan, and Mary Ann Meyer of Cedar Falls. Jack was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Randy an infant in 1953; one brother, Robert Newton; and one sister, Marlene Smith.

He entered the United States Army on July 21, 1944, and was honorably discharged on July 7, 1946, as a Staff Sergeant. He received the American Theatre Service Medal, Meritorious Unit Award, Victory Medal and Good Conduct Medal.

Jack was an active member of the Delhi Lion’s Club, where he served as treasurer; he was also on the Delaware County Board of Health, and a member of St. John’s Catholic Church.

Memorials may be directed to the Hospice of Comfort.

Lyle Ray Meyer was born icon in Waukon, Iowa, on March 31, 1948, the son of Leslie C. and Elsie (Schellhammer ) Meyer. He was raised and educated in the Manchester area, graduating from West Delaware County Community Schools in 1966. He served honorably in the United States Army during the Viet Nam Conflict. Lyle attended Hawkeye School of Technology in Waterloo. On October 30, 1969, he was united in marriage to Janet Oldfather in Manchester. They made their home in Manchester, Cedar Falls for ten years, and since 1978 have lived in Cedar Rapids. Lyle was employed as a service technician by Bell & Howell now operating as Kodak for twenty-eight years. Lyle died suddenly on Thursday, September 28, 2006, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids. He was fifty-eight years of age. Survivors include his wife, Janet Meyer of Cedar Rapids; his mother, Elsie Meyer of Manchester; five children, Julie (Keith) Green of Chandler, Arizona, Linda (Paul) Moellers, David Meyer, Jennifer Meyer (special friend, Pat Eggleston), and Jonathan Meyer all of Cedar Rapids; five grandchildren, Amanda, Brittany, Logan and Kyle Green, and Carter Moellers; eight brothers, Leslie (Leona) Meyer, Gerald (Patty) Meyer, Vern Meyer, Curt (Colleen) Meyer, Denny (Krista) Meyer, all of Manchester, Rev. Rod (Cheryl) Meyer of Harcourt, Dale (Michelle) Meyer of Mt. Horeb, Wisconsin, and Bruce Meyer of Manchester; and his father and mother-in-law, Wally and Mary Oldfather of Manchester. Lyle was preceded in death by his father, Leslie Meyer in 1995; and one brother, David.

He served honorably in the United States Army during the Viet Nam Conflict.

Alice A. Stence

Alice A. Stence, 92, Elkader, died Wednesday, September 27, 2006, at the Elkader Care Center, Elkader, following a long illness. She was born icon September 12, 1914, on the family farm in Clayton Township to Edward and Minnie (Schroeder) Vorwald. She graduated from St. Mary's High School in Guttenberg.

Alice was united in marriage to John Stence on October 20, 1941, at St. Mary's Church in Guttenberg. John and Alice met at Lakeside Ballroom, Guttenberg, and enjoyed dancing throughout their married life. Four children blessed this union. They farmed south of Elkader until moving to town in 1974. Prior to her marriage, Alice worked at the button factory for five years. From 1961 to 1968, she worked the lunch program at St. Joseph's School in Elkader. She was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church and Guild.

Survivors include three children, Susan (Francis) Whittle, Elkader, Dick (Donna Daly) Stence, Dubuque, Ruth (Dick) Streicher, Farmersburg; nine grandchildren; Jacqueline Stence, Aaron (Wendy) Stence, Marie Whittle, John Whittle, James Stence, Joseph Stence, Jennifer (Doug) Horness, Michael Streicher, Bryan (Kryssi Colsch) Streicher and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband on July 25, 1990; her son Jack and daughter-in-law, Bev; great-grandson, Dominick; two sisters, Eliza Weber and Ruby Peterson and three brothers, Deak Vorwald, Ted Vorwald and Jack Vorwald.

Donald E. Smock
February 18, 1919 - September 26, 2006
Dundee, Iowa

Donald Eugene Smock was born icon near Wood Center in Clayton County, Iowa on February 18, 1919, the son of Homer and Aurilla (Fishel) Smock. He attended rural school and Greeley High School. Donald was united in marriage to Donna Duffy on June 14, 1941, at St. Mark’s Catholic Church in Edgewood. Donald farmed until 1961, worked at the Greeley Creamery, and worked in construction. In 1965 they moved to Dundee. Donald retired in 1981. Donald died at the Regional Medical Center in Manchester on Tuesday afternoon, September 26, 2006, following a lengthy illness. He was eighty-seven years of age. Donald liked gardening, horses, flowers, hunting, fishing, animals, and working on lawn mowers. Survivors include his wife, Donna of Dundee; three daughters, Shiela (Gerald) Dunn of Cedar Rapids, Suzanne (Richard) Langel of Manchester, and Debra (Ronald) Stoecker of Princeville, Illinois; nine grandchildren; and sixteen great-grandchildren. Donald was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, Rodney Cozad; a great-grandson, Carter DeMoss; and nine siblings.
