Olivia Rose Schmidt was born icon on March 29, 2006, at Regional Medical Center in Manchester, the daughter of Gary and Andrea (Bradley) Schmidt. She was baptized on March 30th by Rev. Harlan Kaden at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids. Olivia died at her home in Manchester on Sunday, October 8, 2006, following an extended illness. She loved to be held by her Mommy and Daddy, enjoyed being read to by her sister, Hannah, and entertained by her brother Grant. Olivia was a “little fighter” since birth. She has been a joy and a blessing that will never be forgotten by her parents, Gary and Andrea Schmidt; her sister Hannah; her brother Grant; maternal grandparents, Steve and JoAnn Bradley of Manchester; paternal grandparents, Gordon and Alice Schmidt of Manchester; maternal great-grandmother, Sylvia Bradley; paternal great-grandfather Paul Schmidt; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins. Olivia was preceded in death by her maternal great-grandfather, Donald Bradley; her paternal great-grandmother Elda Schmidt; and an Aunt Karla Schmidt.

Myrtle Edna was born icon May 10, 1914, in Halbrite, Saskatchewan, Canada, to Nick and Rose (Atkinson) Wilgenbusch. She was raised and educated near Farley, Iowa, where she attended rural school. Myrtle was united in marriage to Paul J. Krogmann on February 6, 1934, at Sand Spring, Iowa. Three sons were born icon to this union. Together they farmed south of Petersburg over the years. In 1979, they retired, but remained on the farm. Paul died August 10, 1996 and Myrtle moved to Manchester. Myrtle died on Friday night, October 6, 2006, at the Good Neighbor Home in Manchester. She was ninety-two years of age. Myrtle was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and the Altar and Rosary Society. She was a past-member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church and the Christian Mothers. Myrtle loved her family. She enjoyed crocheting, playing cards, and making quilts for the missions. Survivors include three sons, Paul Jr. (Rosemary) Krogmann of Manchester, James (Marian) Krogmann of Masonville, and Jerome “Jerry” (Rose Ann) Krogmann of Manchester; twenty-nine grandchildren; seventy-one great-grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren; one brother, Herman “Bud” Wilgenbusch of Manchester; six sisters, Gladys Kirby of Cascade, Rose Britt of Delhi, Mary Lauersdorf of Manchester, Laura (Art) Feldmann of Hopkinton, Elsie (Bill) Ries of Cascade, and Alice (Bob) Kirpes of Dubuque; and one sister-in-law, Rita Wilgenbusch of Monticello. Myrtle was preceded in death by her husband, Paul; two grandsons, John Krogmann and Charles Krogmann; one great-granddaughter, Kaye Krogmann; three sisters, Mable Guthrie, Viola Trumm and Ethel Kenny; two brothers, John Wilgenbusch, and Thomas Wilgenbusch; and her parents.

Patricia J. “Pat” Pierce, 61 of Cedar Rapids, formerly of Manchester, died at her home surrounded by her loving family on Thursday, October 5, 2006. Pat was born icon in Ryan on March 13, 1945, the daughter of Pete and Irene (Braun) Lahr. On June 15, 1963, she married Merle B. Pierce at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Manchester. Pat worked at Rockwell Collins for thirty-four years as a production planner. After retiring, Pat and Merle spent their winters in southern Texas. Pat enjoyed horseback riding with her children during their youth and spending time with her family, especially with her grandchildren. Survivors include her husband, Merle B. Pierce of Cedar Rapids; her children, Dana Pierce (friend Steve Haar) of Marion, Dedra (Andy) Cordes of Marion, and Lon A. Pierce of Cedar Rapids; seven grandchildren, Zachary Kerton, Jesse Hubble, Kiyla Ortmann, Briauna Ortmann, Jordan Pierce, Dakota Pierce, and Maicee Pierce; sisters and brothers, Valene (LeRoy) Schnieders of Manchester, Donald Lahr, of Manchester, Mary Ann (Donald) Digmann of Hopkinton, LaVern (Mary) Lahr of Cedar Rapids, Joan (Jerry) Heyer of Manchester, Charles (Nancy) Lahr of Battle Mountain, Nevada, and Linda (R.W.) McDowell of Manchester; and many nieces and nephews. Pat was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Betty and Theresa Lahr, and a nephew, Gregg Schnieders.

Jean Marie was born icon on December 5, 1957, in Manchester, Iowa, the daughter of Lyle F. and Marie (Langel) Neuhaus. She was raised and educated in the area graduating from West Delaware County Community Schools in 1976. She was employed by Exide for eight and one-half years. The past four and one-half years she was a residence at Edgewood Convalescent Home. Jean died at the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics in Iowa City, on Wednesday, October 4, 2006, following an extended illness. She was forty-eight years of age. Jean enjoyed bingo, embroidery, horseshoes and puzzle books. Jean is survived by two brothers, Mike (Judy) Neuhaus of Manchester, and Scott (Coni) Neuhaus of Dundee; two sisters, Kathy (Steve) Marshall, and Mary Jo (Chris) Demmer of Dundee; and several nieces and nephews. Jean was preceded in death by her parents, Lyle Neuhaus on July 6, 1996, and Marie Neuhaus on February 19, 1997; and a brother, William. A special thank you to the nurses and staff at the Edgewood Home for their excellent care!

Frank Chance Brown, 92 of Colesburg passed away on Sunday, October 1, 2006 at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics in Iowa City. He was born icon October 8, 1913, on a farm north of Colesburg in Mallory Township, Clayton County, the son of Frank and Effie (Garber) Brown. He attended the Colesburg schools, graduating from Colesburg High School with the class of ’32.

On June 12, 1936, he was united in marriage with Bethel Barclay, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. O.R. Barclay of Manchester. They are the parents of two children, a daughter Shirley of Sun City West, Arizona and a son Michael of Cincinnati, Ohio.

He spent his entire life in the cattle business and one time owned the Colesburg Stockyards. In later years he pursued his dream and became an auctioneer.

He was active in the Colesburg community as a member of the Commercial Club, member of the Colesburg United Methodist Church, past president of the Colesburg Consolidated School, and the Lone Pine Country Club. At one time he was president of the Delaware County baseball league and served on the Colesburg Farmers Savings Bank Board of Directors. He was an avid sports fan, enjoyed major league baseball, University of Iowa sports and played golf for many years.

Survivors include his wife Bethel Brown of seventy years, Colesburg; a daughter, Shirley (Dal) Thompson of Sun City West, Arizona; a son Michael of Cincinnati, OH; four grandchildren, David (Donna) Thompson of Scottsdale, Arizona, Michael Thompson (Teresa) of Galesburg, IL, Stacy (Joe) Bateman of Villa Hills, Kentucky and Amy (Brad) Baltz of Little Rock Arkansas; six great-grandchildren, David Chance & Taylor Thompson, Coby & Jaclyn Thompson, Elizabeth & Emma Bateman; three step-great-grandchildren, Allan, Nick, and Matt Baltz and two special friends, Shirley Vorwald and Marilyn Juergens.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Gweneth Brown, Mrs. Ralph (Geneva) Moser, and Mrs. Cleo (Jessie) Lee and a daughter-in-law, Ann Brown.

Carroll G. Ehrhardt

Carroll G. Ehrhardt, 90 years and 4 days, a former resident of West Union, died Sunday, October 1, 2006 at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City, Iowa following a long illness. He was born icon in Communia, IA on September 27, 1916, son of George and Henrietta (Stein) Ehrhardt. He graduated from Oelwein High School in 1936 and Elkader Junior College in 1938.

In 1939, Carroll married Ilo Mae Stiehl in St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Garnavillo, Iowa. Carroll worked at Rath Packing Company in Waterloo, Iowa, until 1944. At this time he joined the U.S. Navy, serving on a ship, USSPCS 1451, in the Aleutian Islands. After discharge, he went farming with his father-in-law, K.J. Stiehl, on a farm near St. Olaf, Iowa. Under the GI Bill, Carroll studied locker operation and then later purchased Hawkeye Lockers in 1947. He was well known with the Iowa Meat Processors Association receiving many awards for his championship, prize winning products. He also served as president of the association. In Hawkeye, he was Grand Master of the Masonic Lodge, Commander of the American Legion Post, and a member of the fire department for twenty-nine years as well as mayor and councilman for many years.

Carroll and Ilo Mae retired to West Union in 1976, and became active members of Bethel Presbyterian Church.

Carroll is survived by his wife of sixty-seven years, Ilo Mae Ehrhardt of Mason City; a son, Dr. Dennis K. Ehrhardt of Lafayette, Louisiana, a daughter, Debra L. Hanson of Mason City; three granddaughters, Deanna (Scott) Carew, Cindy (Robert) Kochansky both of Canton, Georgia and Kristin L. Hanson, Mason City; great-grandchildren, Austin and Kayleigh Carew and Julia and Katarina Kochansky all of Canton, Georgia.

Verl V. Peters, 90, of the Good neighbor Home in Manchester, formerly of Greeley, died Saturday, September 30, 2006, at the home, following a long illness. He was born icon July 7, 1916, near Colesburg. He graduated from Greeley High School in 1935, and attended business college.

He was in the US Navy during WW II from 1942-1946. He operated a hardware business for many years.

Survivors include his children, Linda Brasuell and John Peters both of Whittier, CA; two grandchildren; three brothers, Loren Peters, Manchester, Wilbur Peters, Kansas City, MO and Harold Peters, Monticello and two sisters, Ilene Buelow, Cedar Rapids and Mabel Cline, Hopkinton.
