Leo James Christofferson, 77, of Monona, IA, died Monday, September 11, 2006, at the Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospital following a courageous battle with cancer. He was born icon on December 19, 1928, at Postville, to William and Alice (White) Christofferson. He was baptized on April 17, 1938, and confirmed at Postville. On August 24, 1954, Leo was married to Ramona R. Bentien at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Leo attended Postville School and graduated in 1947, where he was Senior Class President and Homecoming King. He received the Iowa Farmers award from the FFA. He served in the United States Marines Corp at San Diego, CA. from 1951 to 1953. Leo farmed near Frankville for two years and then moved to the Luana area. He worked for Marhofer in Postville for eighteen months until it was sold to Hygrade and worked there for sixteen and one half years. He also worked for Lang's Dairy Equipment for six years, Beatrice Cheese Company of Fredericksburg for thirteen years, until he retired on May 1, 1996. Leo was Mayor of Monona for seven and one half years, served on the Harpers Ferry City Council for six years, where he also served as Mayor for two years. Leo was a lifetime member of the American Legion Post 722 of Harpers Ferry, where he was Vice Commander for one year, Brotherly Love Masonic Lodge of Postville, Scottish Rite Temple, 32 degree of Cedar Rapids, Lifetime member of the El Kahir Shrine Temple of Cedar Rapids, volunteer Fire Department for Monona and Harpers Ferry, Iowa Fireman's Association and the Northeast Iowa Shrine Clowns. For years Leo was a cast member of the "Living Last Supper" playing James the Elder. Survivors include his wife of fifty two years, Ramona Christofferson, Monona; three children, Wm. “Bill” (Joyce) Christofferson, Postville, Melon (Significant other Joe Hogan) Horns, Harpers Ferry, Tim (Linda) Christofferson, Monona; one step-daughter, Linda (Eldon) Kurth, Monona; nine grandchildren; one step-granddaughter; four great-grandchildren; one sister, Marian Linderbaum, Castalia; one brother, Roger (Marilyn) Christofferson, Postville; two half-brothers, Dean (Mary) Christofferson, AZ, Mark (Lonnie) Christofferson, KS, and two half-sisters, Myrna (Ron) Gordon, NM, and Ruth Walz, AZ and several nieces and nephews. Leo was preceded in death by his parents, step mother Lois; son-in-law, Myron Horns; brother in law, Charles Linderbaum; sisters-in-law, Betty Funk and JoAnn Benesh; maternal in laws Linford and Thelma Bentien.

Bennie J. Dahlstrom, 91, Monona, Iowa, died Saturday, September 09, 2006, at the Great River Care Center, McGregor, Iowa, following a long illness. Bennie was born icon February 19, 1915, in Manly, Iowa, to Louie and Bertha (Casey) Dahlstrom. He graduated from High School in Osseo, WI.

Bennie and his parents farmed several different farms in northern Iowa and Wisconsin. In 1937, they purchased a farm 3 miles north of Whitehill, WI, where they farmed for the next 31 years. In 1968, they sold the farm and in 1970, they moved to Monona to be closer to their relatives.

Bennie worked as a carpenter for several years in the Monona area and loved to work in his shop. He wrote several short articles in a rural Wisconsin newspaper and loved to tell stories about the good old days. Bennie enjoyed the friendship of several neighbors and friends in the Monona area.

Survivors include several cousins.

Bennie was preceded in death by his parents.

Steven Mark Burns was born icon on October 12, 1953, in Manchester, Iowa, the son of Marwan and Lillian (Johnson) Burns. He was raised and educated in Manchester and graduated from West Delaware High School in 1971. He attended a vocational school diesel truck school in Cedar Rapids. Steve drove truck and did mechanic work on truck. He later owned and operated his own semi for many years. On October 14, 1995, he was united in marriage to Theresa Schmitt at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Steve died suddenly and was found in his truck in Creve Coeur, Missouri on Wednesday, September 6, 2006. He was fifty-two years of age. Steve was an active member of First Lutheran Church where he taught Sunday School; enjoyed trucking and riding Ragbrai. Survivors include his wife, Theresa of Manchester; two sons, Levon and Nathaniel at home; his parent s, Marwan and Lillian Burns of Manchester; two brothers, Randy (Sheila) Burns and Brian Burns both of Manchester; and two sisters, Kathy (William) Zanner of St. Paul, Minnesota, and Janice Burns of Lisbon. Steve was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Oscar and Dora Johnson; and his paternal grandparents, Otto and Lula Burns.

Daniel Robert Besler was born icon on January 16, 1951, in Manchester, Iowa, the son of John and Margaret (McElmeel) Besler. He was raised and received his education in Manchester and later receiving his GED. Dan enlisted in the Marines and served honorably in Vietnam. On July 25, 1981, he was united in marriage to JoAnn Werner at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Manchester. They were later divorced. Dan was employed at John Deere in Waterloo, worked locally in Manchester in construction, and later owned and operated his own construction company. Dan died at the V.A. Hospital in Iowa City on Wednesday, September 6, 2006, following a brief illness. He was fifty-five years of age. Dan enjoyed socializing with family and friends and mushroom hunting. Survivors include his two children, Mandy Besler and special friend, Shannon Davis of Hopkinton, and Nick Besler and special friend Nicole Martinez of Cedar Rapids; a granddaughter Nevaeh Besler; two sisters, Diane (Paul) Mesch of Manchester, and Connie (Gary) Cooper of Cedar Rapids; three brothers, Jack Besler, and Dan’s twin brother Denny (Emmy) Besler all of Manchester, and Ron (Mary) Besler of Boone; four nieces and seven nephews. Dan was preceded in death by his parents.

Howard Clark Taylor was born icon on January 16, 1923, the son of Forrest and Charlotte (Wright) Taylor in Ellsworth, Michigan. He was raised by John and Elsie Barclay. He graduated in 1942 from Lamont High School. Howard entered the Army-Air Force on February 14, 1943, serving in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He was discharged from the service on February 14, 1946. Howard and Nell Jeane Granger were united in marriage on September 14, 1946, in Sarasota, Florida. Seven children were born icon to this union. Together they farmed and lived north of Masonville, until November 1993 they moved and made their home in Manchester. Howard died at his home in Manchester on Tuesday, September 5, 2006, following a fourteen-year battle with cancer. He was eighty-three years of age. Howard was a member of the United Methodist Church and a long-time member of the Lamont American Legion Post 346. Survivors include his wife Jean of Manchester; seven children, Janice (Jerry) Everitt of Strawberry Point, Joyce (Thomas) Bulgier of Huntsville, Texas, Joan Andrews of Manchester, Jacquelyn (Bruce) Brandes of Sealy, Texas, Russell (Michelle) Taylor of Fairfax, Randall (Cheri) Taylor of Manchester, and Lynn (James) Mischke of Newhall; twelve grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; one sister, Vera (Elvin) Gienapp of Manchester; and one sister-in-law, Iva Taylor of Manchester. Howard was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, William and Harry; an infant sister, Myrtle; two sons-in-law, James Rittmer and David Coleson.

The family requests that memorials be directed to Hospice or United Methodist Church.

Donald J. Timmer, 67, of Manchester, died suddenly on Monday morning, September 4, 2006, at the Regional Medical Center in Manchester. He was born icon August 19, 1939, in Dyersville to Elmer and Mary (Clement) Timmer. He attended rural schools in the area. He was united in marriage to Delores Robinson on April 28, 1959, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Manchester. Four children were born icon to this union. Donald worked for Wilson’s in Cedar Rapids, operated a feed mill for a time and also worked as a mechanic at Woody’s Skelly. He then started Don’s Southside Auto Sales in Manchester and operated it until he retired. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, car shows, spending time with family and visiting with friends over a cup of coffee. Survivors include his wife, Delores Timmer, Manchester; his children, Deb Putz, Manchester, Doug (Kathy) Timmer, Manchester, Dan (Sherry) Timmer, Marshalltown and David (Martha) Timmer, Manchester; nine grandchildren, Chris Putz, Kyle Timmer, Ashley Timmer, Brittany Timmer, Derek Timmer, Seth Timmer, Amber Denison, Hayley Timmer and Tyler Timmer; a great-granddaughter, Macie Putz and a sister, Janet (Andy) Bockenstedt, Strawberry Point. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Ferne Elizabeth Bennett
August 15, 1915 - August 31, 2006

Ferne Elizabeth Kerr was born icon at Volga City, IA on August 15, 1915 to William Y. and Anna (Gruver) Kerr. She attended school at Clayton & Fayette County country schools and graduated from Elgin High School in 1933. She was a life-long active member of the Illyria Community Church. She was united in marriage to Cleve LeRoy Bennett on November 22, 1937 at the United Methodist Parsonage, Elgin, IA. 2 children, Bill & Betty Lou, were born icon to this union. She & Cleve farmed in Clayton & Fayette Counties, settling at the home farm north of Highway 56 near Elgin in 1948.

Ferne enjoyed her family, hand-work, and maintaining large vegetable and flower gardens. She was a consummate hostess & was well known for serving meals to large crowds of family & friends at her home, often consisting of fresh or home-canned foods from her own garden and meats from the family farm. Relatives & friends were regular overnight guests anxious to enjoy her hospitality. Her Faith in God was an ever-present source of strength for her in daily living and in times of distress. The Bennetts moved into Elgin in 1992. Cleve & Ferne were annual “snowbirds” in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas for nearly 20 years. She was an excellent pinochle player until her final days. She became a resident of Eagle Ridge Retreat, rural Elgin, in 2004.Ferne, 91, was finally able to join Cleve in eternal rest on August 31, 2006 at Palmer Lutheran Health Center, West Union after a brief illness. The family invites you to honor Ferne’s memory at the visitation from 4 to 6 pm on Monday, September 4 at Leonard Funeral Home, Elgin and funeral on Tuesday, September 5 at 11 am, Illyria Community Church, rural Elgin. Interment to follow at the Illyria Cemetery.

She is survived by her son, William Bennett & wife Judy of Elgin, her daughter, Betty Lou Cook & husband James of Hiawatha, IA; her devoted sister & best friend Nona Torson of Elgin; 5 grandchildren: Jeff Cook of Cedar Rapids, IA, Bryan (Val) Cook of Marion, IA, Matt (Sarah) Cook of Central City, IA, Craig Bennett of Elgin, and Teresa (Danny) Burrack, of Wadena, IA; 9 great-grandchildren: Brock Thompson, Jessie, Kayla & Bryce Cook, Abigail & Sydney Cook, Garrett, Mallory & Marrah Burrack; sisters-in-law: Adeline Kerr of Raymond, IA, Grace Kerr of Elgin, and Hazel Kerr of Broward, FL, Toni Bennett of Antioch, CA, and Evelyn Ryan of Chicago, IL, Charlotte (Elmer) Olsen of Cedar Rapids, Joan (Kenneth) Alexander of Brooklyn, IA; brothers-in-law: Richard Bennett of Mansfield, TX, Bob Bennett of Palo, IA, Roger Bennett of Lansing, IA; a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

She was preceded in by her husband; her parents; 4 brothers: Thomas, James, Robert, & Clifton Kerr; & 2 sisters: Leone Shaffer & June Light.

Ferne will be fondly remembered for her deep & constant Faith, her devotion to her husband, her prolific quilting & crocheting, her always-present cinnamon rolls & noodles, and her gracious hospitality.
