Irene Albertha Mensen, 89 died Sunday, August 27, 2006, at the Good Neighbor Home in Manchester after an extended illness. She was born icon December 29, 1916, in Greeley, Iowa, the daughter of Ben and Margaret (Klosterman) Funke. On January 7, 1941, Irene was united in marriage to Edmund Mensen at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Greeley. The couple farmed in Edgewood, and then bought a farm northeast of Manchester where they farmed until they retired in 1979 and moved to Manchester. Edmund died March 19, 1980. Irene was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Manchester. She enjoyed her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and making quilts for her family. Irene was active in St. Mary’s Quilting Group, Rosary Society, and the neighborhood Jeff Club. She loved to walk and play cards. Irene is survived by her six children, Lois (John) Kaiser of Cresco, Mary (Delbert) Heims of Dundee, Doris (and the late Richard) Deutmeyer of Manchester, Jean (Robert) Grawe of Strawberry Point, Alice (Jerry) Deutmeyer of Dyersville, and Larry (Rhonda) Mensen of Manchester; twenty-six grandchildren; fifty-three great-grand children; four sisters, Helen Vaske of Greeley, Charlotte Mensen of Earlville, Esther (Fritz) Lechtenberg of Masonville, and Margie Reinert of Elkader; one brother, Ed (LouMae) Funke of Manchester; and brothers-in-law, Leo (Dorothy) Mensen of Earlville, and Lavern (Janice) Mensen of Petersburg. She was preceded in death by her husband Edmund, son-in-law, Richard Deutmeyer, grandson Mark Heims, two brothers, Ralph and Art Funke, brothers-in-law, John Reinert, Arnold Mensen, Ambrose Mensen, and Paul Vaske; and one sister-in-law, Mary Ann Mensen.

Patricia Ann Geno, 67, Harpers Ferry, Iowa, died Saturday, August 26, 2006, at University of Iowa Hospital, Iowa City, following a long illness. Patricia was born icon on August 11, 1939, in Iowa City, to Edward and Lucy (Fredrick) Farrell. She graduated from Volga High School.

Patricia was united in marriage to Robert Geno on July 6, 1973, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. She was in the banking business for many years. Patricia and Bob owned and operated a river front resort in Harpers Ferry. She loved spending time with her family and friends.

Survivors include four children, Lee Todd (Dee) Geno, Marengo, Joseph Edward (Cheri) Madlom, Austin, TX, Robert “Scott” (Lynn) Geno, Volney, Julie Lynn (Wes) Heying, Monona; twelve grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one brother, Edward Farrell, Strawberry Point; one sister, Lucille Kozul, OH, and many nieces and nephews.

Patricia was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bob, on June 28, 2005; one son, Mark, in infancy and seven brothers and sisters, John, Mildred, Marion, Chalista, Joe, Mae and Irene.

Carl Roy George Johanningmeier

Carl Roy George Johanningmeier, 89, Monona, Iowa, passed away on Friday, August 25, 2006, at the Good Samaritan Center, Postville, following an extended illness. He was born icon on June 26, 1917, in Monona Township to Wilhelm H. and Johanna (Wagner) Johanningmeier. Carl was baptized on August 5, 1917, and confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Monona. On November 28, 1942, he was united in marriage to Nellie A. Troester at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Postville.

Carl was a credit to the farming profession. He was respected and admired by those that knew him. Carl not only turned the soil, he turned the lives of those that were around him. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Emma in infancy and June Schriver and two brothers, Lloyd and Palmer Johanningmeier.

Survivors include his wife of sixty-three years, Nellie; three daughters, Barbara (Augie) Waltmann, Waverly, Elaine (Art) Waggoner, Commerce City, CO, Gayle (Bob) Nielsen, Council Bluffs; six grandchildren, Cheryl (Ned) Lundsgaard, Denise Waltmann, Heather (Jeff) Hein, Tyler Martin, Jeff Nielsen and Angela (Brett) Elam; six great-grandchildren; two brothers, Willis Johanningmeier, Waukon, Maloy Johanningmeier, Monona; one sister, Betty (Henry) Kleinow, Prairie du Chien, WI, and many nieces and nephews.

Betty Mae Palmer
September 25, 1927 - August 24, 2006
Garber, IA

Betty Mae Palmer, 78, of Garber, died Thursday, August 24, 2006, at the Guttenberg Municipal Hospital, Guttenberg, following a brief illness.

She was born icon September 25, 1927, rural Garber, to Ernest and Emma (Jaster) Smock. Betty graduated from Elkport High School in 1946.

Betty was united in marriage to Oscar Cole on September 25, 1948. Three children were born icon to this union. Oscar died November 8, 1969. She married Edward Palmer on June 9, 1973, and he died in February 19, 1976.

Betty and Oscar operated Cole's Store in Garber and also sold corn and feed. She was a correspondent for the Clayton County Register and the Guttenberg Press. Betty also helped Dennis Freitag with the voting process.

Survivors include her two sons, Al (Wendy) Cole, Strawberry Point and Aaron (Alysia) Cole, Glenwood; her son-in-law Jeffrey Moser, Marion; eighteen grandchildren; many great-grandchildren and sister-in-law Joleen Fassbinder, Guttenberg.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands; one daughter, Aileen Moser; four brothers, Burdette, Pete, Nellie and John and three sisters, Blanche Cardin, Beulah McAmis and Bernadine Rentschler.

Leona Anna Nachtman

Leona Anna was born icon on July 8, 1906, at Luxemburg the daughter of John B. and Susan (Thillen) Greiner. She received her early education at Holy Trinity School in Luxemburg and worked in the area until her marriage. She was united in marriage to Louis Nachtman on February 1, 1926, in Luxemburg. Together they farmed in the Ryan area. Leona was a homemaker and enjoyed gardening and quilting. She is a former member of St. Patrick’s Church in Ryan, Infant of Prague Guild, The Ryan Senior Citizens, Catholic Daughters of America, and the Franciscan Prayer Affiliates. Leona passed away peacefully at the Good Neighbor Home in Manchester surrounded by her loving family on Sunday morning, August 20, 2006. She was one hundred years of age. She will be sadly missed by her children, Sister Loretta Nachtman, Esther (Robert) Linden, Sister Mildred Nachtman, O.S.F. all of Dubuque, John (Caroline) Nachtman of Manchester, Edith Schwers of Anamosa, Harold (Lynn) Nachtman of Cedar Rapids, and Art (Marge) Nachtman of Ryan; twenty-seven grandchildren; fifty-three great-grandchildren; a sister, Marie Maiers of Bellevue; and four half sisters, Serena Endres, Matilda Morgenroth, Helen Gogel, and Jeanette Reed. Leona was preceded in death by her husband, Louis who died November 9, 1987; her parents; and two infant daughters.

Cathrine R.(Kate) Larson, 86, of Elkader, Iowa, died Wednesday, August 16, 2006, at Central Community Hospital after a long illness.

She was born icon on May 13, 1920, in rural Clayton County to Herman and Marie (Kuehl) Reimer. She was baptized and confirmed at Peace United Church of Christ in Elkader. Her brothers and sisters preceding her in death were: Orville, Clarence, Haldon Reimer and sister Laurene Larson. A brother, Melvin Reimer of Cedar Falls, survives her.

On May 20, 1942, Kate married Harry J. Larson in Columbus, Ga. He preceded her in death in 1996 after 54 years of marriage.

Kate lived all her life in the Elkader area except for one year when she lived in Berkley, CA, working for the telephone company while Harry served in World War II. After the war, they worked together at Larson Shell. She later worked for several businesses in the Elkader area and spent most of her last working years with Clayton County Farm Service Co. Kate enjoyed working with the public and cherished the many friends and co-workers she met through the years. She also treasured the time she was able to spend with her family and enjoyed cooking, gardening and playing cards. Kate was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church since 1957.

Also surviving are her children: James and Joyce (Seeland) Larson of Peoria, IL, Louise Larson of Elkader, Jeff and Terry (Hulbert) Larson of Manchester, grandchildren: Adam Larson of Cedar Rapids Kristin Larson, Cedar Falls along with many nieces and nephews. An infant son also preceded her in death.

Kate will also miss her loyal neighbors and the many faithful friends who visited her regularly the past several years when her health was declining.
