Kathryn Shannahan, age 84 of Williamsburg, died Sunday, March 6, 2011 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. Funeral Mass: 10:30 A.M. Wednesday, March 9, 2011 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Williamsburg with Fr. Joseph Roost officiating. Burial will be St. Mary’s Cemetery, Williamsburg. Visitation: 4 to 7 P.M. Tuesday, March 8, 2011 at St. Mary’s Hall, Williamsburg, with a VFW Auxiliary Service at 7 P.M. followed by a Vigil Service. A memorial fund has been established. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo is in charge of arrangements.
She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Joe; three daughters, Sandy Weldon (Jim) of Oxford, Marcy Wardenburg (Kent) of Williamsburg, and Julie Corman (Dan) of Broomfield, CO; eight grandchildren, Aimee Pitlick (Gary) of Oxford, Allison Weldon of North Liberty, Andy Weldon of Oxford, Tony Wardenburg (Kristi) of Littleton, CO, Kelly Vesey (Chris) of West Des Moines, Shannan Corman of Arvada, CO, Ryan Corman of Durango, CO and Ashandra Corman of Broomfield, CO; eleven great-grandchildren, Katie, Kyle, Tess and Taylor Pitlick, Addison and Jack Weldon, Brody and RosieLu Wardenburg, Gavin and Landon Vesey and Madison Corman.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a daughter Teri Shannahan, a granddaughter Tara Wardenburg, three brothers, Earl, Hubert and Joseph Gallagher, and four sisters, Mary Agnes Kinney, Anna Gallagher, Rose Mae Gallagher and Mary Jane Steffen.
Kathryn Gallagher was born October 18, 1926 in Parnell, Iowa, the daughter of Hugh F. and Teresa A. Ford Gallagher. She attended the Boyle Green Elementary School in Holbrook and graduated from Parnell High School in 1944. Katie married Joseph Shannahan on May 10, 1949 at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Besides being a wife, mother and homemaker, she co-owned and operated Joe’s Tavern for 22 years. She also worked as a clerk at the Amana Holiday Inn for 20 years and was employed at Sport Hill Country Club for 4 years. Katie received many awards for her devoted volunteerism. She received the Department of Iowa Ladies Auxiliary Volunteer of the Year in 2008, the Sharon Olson Award--Hospice Volunteer of the Year, and the Governor’s Award for Volunteering. She also did volunteer work for the VA Hospital in Iowa City. Katie was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, the Altar and Rosary Society, the Iburg-Poulson VFW Auxiliary 8797, the Hospice of Compassion, and the Care Review Commission. She was active with the Iowa County Food Bank and also the L.O.V.E. Network.

Wallace W. “Wally” Pasbrig, age 71 of South Amana, died Friday, March 4, 2011, at St. Luke’s Hospital, Cedar Rapids, IA, following a brief illness. Funeral Services: 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, March 8, 2011, Trinity Lutheran Church, Walford, IA with Rev. David Mosher officiating. Visitation: 4 to 7 P.M. Monday, March 7, 2011 at the church. A memorial fund has been established. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo is in charge of arrangements.
He is survived by his wife Paula; three children, David and special friend Elaine Sackett of Cedar Rapids, Jennifer Blankinship (Wes) of Oxford and Christopher (Jill) of Homestead; four grandchildren, Andrew and Samuel Graesser, and Lauren and Elizabeth Pasbrig. Also surviving are a brother David Pasbrig (Charlene) and a sister Cindy Fauerbach (Steve) all of Mayville, WI. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Wallace William Pasbrig was born December 15, 1939 in Madison, WI, the son of Wallace Henry and Myra Isabel Nelson Pasbrig. He graduated from Mayville High School in 1958 and attended the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and then Brown School of Broadcasting in Minneapolis. Wally served in the U.S. Air Force Reserves. He married Paula Louise Voehl on October 29, 1966 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Clinton, IA. He was employed with KCRG-Radio for many years, retiring in 2002. Wallace was active in several civic organizations in Wisconsin and Iowa. He was an avid supporter of the Green Bay Packers and the Wisconsin Badgers.

Karen E. Grimm, age 68 of Apache Junction, AZ, formerly of rural Deep River, died Tuesday, March 1, 2011 in Arizona.
Memorial Services: 10:00 A.M. Friday, March 11, 2011, Deep River Community Center, 701 Main Street, Deep River, IA. with Shirley Van Dee officiating. Visitation: 4 to 7 P.M. Thursday, March 10, 2011 at the Deep River Community Center. Inurnment will be at a later date. A memorial fund has been established.
She is survived by her husband Kenneth; a son Todd Grimm (Sara) of North English; two daughters Nicole Sue Hartman (James) of Montezuma and Lauri Guzman (David) of Fresno, CA; thirteen grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; a brother Darlo Kelting (Diana) of Grinnell and a sister Lanette Crow (Lyle) of Oxford. She was preceded in death by her parents, a daughter Kristi Neil, two brothers, Arlen “Buck” Kelting and Garth Kelting, a brother-in- law, Dean Wright, and a sister-in-law, Norma Kelting.
Karen Erlene Kelting was born March 5, 1942 in Williamsburg, Iowa, the daughter of Harold and Eleanor Newkirk Kelting. She received her education in the local Lutheran schools and graduated from Williamsburg High School in 1960. Karen married Kenneth Grimm on June 7, 1973 in Las Vegas, NV. Karen was a beautician in Deep River and Millersburg for 30 years. The couple also owned and operated the Livingroom Greenhouse in Deep River. In 1990, they moved to Arizona, where Karen worked with Allstate Insurance until 2000.
Karen was an awesome wife, mother and grandmother. She enjoyed floral arranging for weddings, bowling, playing cards and socializing with her friends. Karen was an avid sports fan and followed the Iowa Hawkeyes, Phoenix Suns, Diamondbacks and the Chicago Cubs.

James L. “Jake” Griggs, age 83, of Marengo, died Wednesday, February 16, 2011 at St. Mary’s Hospital, Mayo Clinic, in Rochester, MN. Funeral Services: 10:30 A.M. Monday, February 21, 2011, St. John’s Lutheran Church, Marengo with Rev. Douglas Morton officiating. Burial will be in the Marengo Cemetery with military honors conducted by Marengo American Legion Post #76. Visitation: 4 to 7 P.M. Sunday, February 20, 2011 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Marengo. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo is in charge of arrangements.
He is survived by his wife Beverly; two sons, Theodore Lee Griggs of Marengo, and Timothy Jay Griggs and wife Linda Anne of Marengo; three grandchildren, Trevor Griggs (Mary) of Cedar Rapids, Seth Griggs of Newton, and Trent Griggs of Marengo; and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Sarah M. Griggs Simmons in 1996, and his step-father John Howell “Slim” Simmons.
James Lowell Griggs was born October 22, 1927 in Des Moines, Iowa. He received his education in the Iowa school system and served in the U.S. Army from 1946-47. Jake married Beverly Rose Hannon on July 1, 1949 at St. John’s Lutheran Parsonage, Marengo, Iowa. He was employed as a factory worker for several years. He then managed several service stations. Most recently he was employed as a rural mail carrier from which he retired in 1993.
Jake enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling and working. He called Bingo for many years at the Legion Hall. He was a member of St. John’s dartball league, and enjoyed horseshoe pitching with the Whitey's Oil Team. He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Marengo, a retired member of the Marengo Fire Department and a life member of the Marengo American Legion Post #76.

“Bernie” Otte passed away peacefully surrounded by his family February 14, 2011 at Mercy Medical Center, Cedar Rapids. Funeral services will be held at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Norway, Saturday, February 19 at 10:30 am with Father Brian Dellaert officiating. Visitation will be at Kloster Funeral Home in Marengo from 4-7 Friday, February 18. Burial will follow mass at Lenox Cemetery north of Amana. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established.
Bernfried Hubertus Otte was born August 21, 1930 in Ringwitz, Kr. Neustadt, OberSchlesien, Germany, the son of Max and Charlotte Tilch Otte. He and Marianne Rys of Erding, Germany were married for 39 years. Bernie came to the United States in April of 1954. Bernfried worked at Robinson Wholesale in Cedar Rapids, The Ox Yoke Inn in Amana, and was administrator of Colonial Manor in Middle Amana for 25 years. Bernie, an accomplished gunsmith, also operated Otte’s Gun Shop in Amana. Hobbies he enjoyed included hunting, fishing and watching professional wrestling.
Bernfried is survived by his children Jutta W. Denson ( Morris) of Marengo, Renate M. Schulte (Harold) of Amana, Margaret E. Trumpold (Lynn) of Middle Amana, Peter B. Otte (Kim) of Cedar Falls, and Robert L. Otte (Denise) of Marengo. His grandchildren are Leah Denson of Scottsdale, AZ, Jill Drayfahl (Joshua) of Wapello, Staff Sgt. Robert Denson serving in Germany, Erica Zimmerman (Mark) of Cedar Rapids, William, Jeffrey, and Emilie Trumpold of Middle Amana, Eric Otte of Iowa City, Mark and Kathryn Otte and Victoria Hurst of Cedar Falls, and Madison Otte of Marengo. His great-grandchildren are Robert and Cecelia Drayfahl of Wapello. Also surviving are his brother, Dieter Otte of Markesan, WI, and brother-in-laws Ray Bender and Verlin Dickman (Mary Jo) of Colorado. Bernie is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews and his large tuxedo cat, Boots.
Bernfried was preceded in death by his parents, and Marianne (3-20-93) and two sisters, Jutta Bender and Sigrid Dickman and Son-in-Law, Neil Denson.
Bernie’s family graciously thank Dr. Martin Weisenfeld and staff at Oncology Associates for their sincere care in treating Bernie the past 10 years and to the staff of Hospice of Mercy.

Emma A. Albert, age 101, of Amana, died Monday, February 14, 2011 at Colonial Manor of Amana in Amana. Funeral Services: 10:00 A.M. Thursday, February 17, 2011, Middle Amana Community Church with Elder Harold Pitz officiating. Burial will be in the Amana Cemetery. Visitation: 4 to 7 P.M. Wednesday, February 16, 2011 at the Middle Amana Community Church. Memorials may be contributed to the Amana Church Society. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo is in charge of arrangements.
Emma is survived by a son-in-law, Lester Davis (Sue) of Johnston; five grandchildren, Kim Davis of Sioux City, Tracy Davis (Carmen Kealey) of Coralville, Terry Davis (Brenda) of Oxford, Julie Kotz of Des Moines and Jon Albert of Cedar Rapids; six great-grandchildren, Ryan Stille (Kristy) of Omaha, Nick Stille (Katie) of Omaha, Katie Stille of Sioux City, Conor Davis of Sioux City, Logan Davis of Oxford and Emma Davis of Oxford. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Paul Albert in 1963, a son Carl Albert, a daughter Carolyn Davis, and two sisters, Emily Roemig and Elsie Mattes.
Emma Alice Oesterle was born March 16, 1909 in Amana, Iowa, the daughter of Charles and Elise Clemens Oesterle. She attended the Amana Schools and married Paul Albert on December 5, 1929 in Amana. Besides being a homemaker, Emma worked in the Amana communal kitchens and the Sandstone Winery. Following the loss of her husband and daughter early in their lives, Emma raised her grandchildren. She especially loved caring for them and her great grandchildren. She enjoyed canning, crocheting and knitting, but her happiest moments were those spent in her garden. Emma had a strong faith and was an active member of the Amana Church Society. She also belonged to the Amana Heritage Society.

Ruthlene Cleppe, age 89 of Brooklyn, died Saturday, February 12, 2011 at the Grinnell Regional Medical Center. Funeral Services: 10:30 A.M. Saturday, February 19, 2011 at Kloster Funeral Home, Brooklyn, with Rev. John Dodds officiating. Burial will be in the Brooklyn Memorial Cemetery. Visitation: 6 to 8 P.M. Friday, February 18, 2011 at Kloster Funeral Home, Brooklyn. A memorial fund has been established.
Ruthlene is survived by her son Gary and wife Pat of Brooklyn; her daughter Marcia Kilmer also of Brooklyn, and seven grandchildren, Chad Kilmer (Pam) of Kirksville, MO, Michele Kilmer-Young (Trent) of Kirksville, Darcy Kilmer-Gashwiler (Alan) of Havelock, NC, Jocelyn Williams of Cedar Falls, Brian Beery of Waverly, Carrie Prugh of Cedar Falls and Paris Soboroff of Brooklyn. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 62 years, Wallace E. Cleppe and a brother William Simmons.
Ruthlene Simmons was born August 11, 1921 in rural Brooklyn, Iowa, the daughter of Earl and Margaret Kuntz Simmons. She graduated from Brooklyn High School in 1939 and taught in a rural one-room school house in Poweshiek County. She married Wallace E. Cleppe on March 13, 1947 in Davenport, Iowa. Ruthlene was a wife, mother and homemaker. In her free time Ruthlene enjoyed cross stitch and other needlework. She was a longtime member of the River Road Club.

Rachael M. Sherman, age 96 of Marengo, died Saturday, February 12, 2011 at her home. Funeral Mass: 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, February 16, 2011, St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Marengo with Fr. Joseph Roost officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Marengo. Visitation; 4 to 7 P.M. Tuesday, February 15, 2011, at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo with a Vigil Service at 7 P.M. Memorials may be contributed to St. Patrick’s Catholic Church or the Altar and Rosary Society.
Rachael is survived by her children, Melvin Sherman (Dorcas) of Robins, Constance Weichers (Gary) of Horseshoe Bend, AR, and Jeff Sherman (Laurie) of Marengo; eight grandchildren, Curt Hansel, Dan Sherman, Brad Sherman, Cyndi Sullivan, Rian Sherman, Chad Sherman, Aaron Sherman and Jeffrey Sherman; fourteen great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Also surviving are a brother, Duane Harris (Helen) of Des Moines and a sister Lois Weber (Alvin) of Sigourney. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Kermit in 1978, two brothers, William “Bill” and Maurice Harris and a sister Theresa Lansing.
Rachael Mary Harris was born December 14, 1914 in rural Keokuk County, Iowa, the daughter of George and Ida Van Dee Harris. She graduated from Webster High School in 1932 and married Kermit Kyle Sherman on November 9, 1935 in Iowa City, Iowa. Rachael was a wife, mother and homemaker. She was a Girl Scout leader for 15 years. She loved to cook dinners for her family, gardening, needlework and playing bridge. Rachael was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Marengo, and the Altar and Rosary Society. She also was a member of the Iowa County Historical Society, the Ingleside Club, the Marengo Garden Club and the Marengo Golf Club.
