Helen Louise Thormann

Helen Louise Thormann, age 82, died Wednesday morning, January 12, 2005 at her daughter’s home following a courageous battle with cancer. Private family services will be held at a later date. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo, is in charge of arrangements.

Helen is survived by one daughter, Jamie Frimml of Marengo; two granddaughters, Erin Frimml of Iowa City, and Ellary Frimml of Marengo; one sister, Iris Cooney of Marengo; one brother, Edward Gleason of Marengo; and eight nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Joyce Unglenk, and two brothers, Orrin and Kenneth Gleason.

Helen Louise Gleason was born icon June 1, 1922 in Marengo, Iowa, the daughter of John Henry and Anna Louise Eichhorn Gleason. She graduated from Marengo High School in 1940. She married Richard Walsh in 1942 until 1955. During that time she traveled and worked at many places throughout the U.S. She began work at Collins Radio in 1956 as a provisioning analyst in the avionics division for 26 years. Helen was married to Arthur Thormann between 1960 and 1965. The couple had one daughter. Upon retirement Helen enjoyed babysitting, gardening, playing cards, was an avid animal lover, and her favorite pastime of working the Sunday crossword puzzles.

Gordon Robinson

Gifted with wings, the soul of Gordon Robinson took flight from this earth early Thursday morning, January 27, 2005. Prior to Thursday, he enjoyed a final visit from family, receiving love and blessings for peaceful passage, and countless visits from his friends at Amenity Hospice and Rose Haven, where he lived.

Born September 23, 1923 in New Richland, MN, Gordon was one of six children born icon to Ernest and Marie Webster Robinson. As a young man he served in the CCC, working on community projects before enlisting to serve in World War II. His first experience with war came on December 24, 1944 near Bastogne, France during the Battle of the Bulge where he was later wounded. His discharge papers describe his military role as a Rifleman with the 4th Armored Division; he was authorized to wear the European Theatre Ribbon with three battle stars. Gordon was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge and Purple Heart.

On January 8, 1948, he married Regina Lacher in Marengo, Iowa. With hard work, dedication and numerous adventures, they raised four sons; Frank, Richard, Rod and Mark and one daughter, Dolores. In their later years they lived happily in their apartment on May Street in Marengo, enjoying card playing, visiting their children and grandchildren, fishing and all aspects of nature. Gordon lost his wife of 54 years on May 28, 2002.

During the last two years he lived comfortably at Rose Haven Nursing Home, enjoying music, friends and Buddy the facility dog. Even through times of illness, he portrayed a sense of humor and a deep love for life, friendship and family. His strength, humor and dignity will be fondly remembered.

Gordon is survived by two sisters, Annzetta Clough of New Richland, MN, and Marvel (Ken) Jones of Albert Lea, MN, also his children, Frank and Barbara Robinson of Hope, IN, Richard Robinson of Artesia, NM, Rod and Barbara Robinson of Janesville, MN, Mark and Denise Robinson of Zumbrota, MN and Dolores and Mark Sebetka of Atkins, IA. Gordon dearly loved and enjoyed his grandchildren, Rob, Kristin, Jeremiah, Tanyia, Courtney, Jolene, Jonele, Jordan, Emily and Anna and several great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held from 3 – 5 P.M. on Saturday, January 29, 2005 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. Private family services will be held at a later date. A memorial fund has been established.

Andrea Jo “Andy” Oehl Even

Andrea Jo “Andy” Oehl Even, age 43, of Amana, died Tuesday, March 1, 2005 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City, from injuries suffered in an auto accident. Funeral Services: 10:00 A.M. Friday, March 4, 2005 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Homestead with Rev. Wayne Woolery officiating. Burial will be in the Amana Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 8 P.M. Thursday, March 3, 2005 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. In lieu of flowers memorials may be contributed to Zach’s College Education Fund or the Children’s Miracle Network.

She is survived by her husband Michael, a son, Zachary, and her parents, Don and Judy Oehl, all of Amana. In addition she is survived by aunts, uncles and many cousins and a special friend, Jon Wylie. She was preceded in death by her grandparents.

Andrea Jo Oehl was born icon January 17, 1962 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the daughter of Donald and Judy Schwarting Oehl. She received her education in the Amana Community schools and graduated from Amana High School in 1980. She attended Edison Community College in Ft. Myers, FL. Andrea married Michael Even on August 25, 1984 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Homestead. She worked for many years with Oehl Plumbing and Heating, the family business and was employed as a ward clerk at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids at the time of her death. She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Homestead, and was active with the Amana Youth Soccer Organization.

Alvin Donald Wyland

Alvin Donald Wyland, 77, of Williamsburg, died Friday, February 25 of heart failure at the Tucson Heart Hospital in Arizona. Funeral services: 10:30 A.M. Saturday, March 5, 2005 at the First Presbyterian Church, Williamsburg with Rev. James Stewart officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Williamsburg, with military honors. Friends may call from 4 to 8 P.M. Friday, March 4, 2005 at the church. Memorials may be contributed to the American Heart Association or the American Cancer Society in Alvin’s name. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo is in charge of arrangements.

Alvin was born icon in Kensington, Kansas on May 27, 1927 to John Donald Wyland and Marie Ann Norden Wyland. He attended primary school through 8th grade in Almena, Kansas. In 1941 his family moved to San Gabriel, California, in Los Angeles County. From there they moved to Fresno where Alvin was graduated from Fresno High School in June 1945. In February 1945, while World War Two was still in progress, he enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard. At that time the Coast Guard was an arm of the U.S. Navy. For training, Alvin was temporarily assigned to the U.S. Navy destroyer USS Haynsworth, DD700. Following that, he was assigned to the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Sebago, similar to a navy destroyer, where he served until discharged in May 1946.

On August 27, 1955 Alvin and Bonnie Lou Menzmer were married in Fresno. Alvin was graduated from the University of California at Berkeley in 1957 with a B.S. in Engineering. After graduation Alvin accepted employment with General Electric Company.

In April of 1980 Alvin and Bonnie were involved in an automobile accident; Bonnie did not survive. On February 12, 1983 he married Loretta Williams at the First Presbyterian Church in Williamsburg. Alvin practiced engineering for 33 years as a design engineer, retiring in 1990 from Amana Refrigeration, Inc. in Amana, Iowa.

As a young boy, Alvin took a five-dollar airplane ride at a local carnival after which he developed a love of airplanes, flight, and the skies that remained a part of him all his life. He kept and flew many small airplanes over the years and between 1970 and 1990, worked meticulously to build his own Starduster Too, an open-cockpit biplane, which he enjoyed flying for several years. Throughout his career and in retirement, he published technical and magazine articles and received ten patents for a variety of inventions. Alvin enjoyed Ham radio, painting, music, astronomy, historical and scientific reading, wildlife, thunderstorms, and time with his family. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather who remained involved and dedicated to the members of his family every day of his life.

Surviving Alvin are his wife Loretta; his three daughters, Lisa Marie Wyland of Silver Springs, MD, Nancy Gayle Newkirk and husband Ramon of Solon, IA, Janet Wyland Grondin and husband Patrick of Fairfax, VA; two stepchildren, Scott Dwight Williams and wife Robin of Williamsburg, IA, Peggy Swick and husband Bill of Cedar Rapids, IA; a brother, David Carl Wyland and wife Kathy of Morgan Hill, CA, and a sister, Jessie Marie Johnson of Sweet Home, OR. Alvin had eight grandchildren: Alex and Miles Newkirk, Joseph and Donald Grondin, Jennifer and Shanna Williams, and Michael and Katherine Swick, and a host of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Bonnie, a newborn son, Donald Scott Wyland, mother and father Marie and John Wyland, and his sister Alice Marie Grundt.

Floyd W. Meyer, Jr.

Floyd W. Meyer, Jr., age 64, was called home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, March 2, 2005 at the Marengo Memorial Hospital following an extended illness. Funeral Services: 2:00 P.M. Saturday, March 5, 2005 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Marengo with Pastor Douglas Morton officiating. Burial will be in the Marengo Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 P.M. Friday, March 4, 2005 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. A memorial fund has been established.

He is survived by his wife, Marcella; a son Scott and wife Lisa of Williamsburg; a daughter, Susannah Rayas and husband Alex of El Paso, TX, six grandchildren, Joel Dronebarger, Skyler Meyer, Gramm Meyer, Sarah Rayas, Cashlee Rayas, and Stetson Rayas;; four brothers, Vernon of Conroy, Edward of Marengo, Richard of Parnell and Leonard of Conroy; and two sisters, Della Stevens of Deep River and Ruth Melsa of Marengo. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, David, Melvin and John in infancy and a daughter and son-in-law, Sarah and Gary Wetjen.

Floyd William Meyer was born icon March 8, 1940 in Iowa County, Iowa, the son of Floyd G. and Alice Mumm Meyer. He received his education in the Iowa County schools and married Marcella Meeks on September 30, 1960 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Marengo. He was employed by George Myers at the Phillips 66 station in South Amana for several years. From 1965 until 1990 he owned and operated Floyd’s DX in South Amana, which later was renamed Floyd’s Repair.

Floyd was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Marengo, and especially enjoyed dartball. His passion was classic cars and street rod shows, and he enjoyed participating in local parades.

Kathryn Williams Mumby

Kathryn Williams Mumby, age 84 of Marengo, died Sunday afternoon, February 20, 2005 at the Rose Haven Nursing Home following an extended illness. Funeral Services: 10:30 A.M. Wednesday, February 23, 2005, St. John’s Lutheran Church, Marengo with Pastor Douglas Morton officiating. Burial will be in the Ladora Cemetery, rural Ladora. Friends may call from 4 to 8 P.M. Tuesday, February 22, 2005 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. Memorials may be contributed to the St. John’s Lutheran Church Preschool or Sunday School.

Kathryn Williams was born icon July 3, 1920 in Williamsburg, Iowa, the daughter of Gwilym and Mary Ada Roberts Williams. She received her education in the Williamsburg schools. She married Vernon LeRoy Mumby on April 19, 1947 at the Presbyterian Parsonage in Marengo. The couple farmed in the Williamsburg and Ladora areas until retirement in 1976. In June of 1985 they moved to Marengo. Vernon died April 30, 1986. Kathryn has made her home at Rose Haven Nursing Home since 2002 due to failing health.

Kathryn is survived by a daughter, Sharon Denzler (Lauren) of Belle Plaine; a son, Allen (Mary Ann) of Marengo, a daughter-in-law, Elaine Wille of Cedar Rapids, 16 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, and 7 great-great grandchildren. In addition she is survived by 2 sisters, Jeanette Faas of Hiawatha and Lorna Ann Kuhnle (Carl) of Council Bluffs; 2 brothers, David Williams (Gladys) of Hiawatha and Russell Williams (Maxine) of Monticello, and a sister-in-law, Lois Williams of Grants Pass, Oregon.

Kathryn was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Vernon, a son, Larry Wille in 2004, 2 brothers, Elliott and Stanley Williams, a sister, Mary Olwen Linnell, a sister-in-law, Bobbi Williams and 2 brothers-in-law, Jim Faas and M.R. Linnell.

Garth H. Kelting

Garth H. Kelting, age 60, died Saturday, February 26, 2005 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City following an extended illness. Funeral Services: 10:30 A.M. Tuesday, March 1, 2005, St. Paul Lutheran Church, Williamsburg with Rev. Carl Cloeter officiating. Burial will be in Pilot Grove Cemetery, Williamsburg. Friends may call from 4 to 8 P.M. Monday, February 28, 2005 at St. Paul Lutheran Church Fellowship Hall. A memorial fund has been established. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo is in charge of arrangements.

He is survived by his wife Sandra; a son Greg and fiancée Dena Jackman of Williamsburg; two daughters, Katie Bauer and husband Scott of West Des Moines, and Natasha Kelting and fiance Tony Hauschilt of Marengo; a grandson, Brody Bauer; a brother, Darlo Kelting and wife Dianna of Grinnell; and two sisters, Lanette Crow and husband Lyle of Oxford and Karen Grimm and husband Kenneth of Apache Junction, AZ. In addition he is survived by a stepson, Mitchell Hughes of Williamsburg, and a step-daughter, Dayna LaTorre and husband Dan of Lander, WY and his special friend and companion, Sadie, his dog. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Arlen and his first wife, Norma.

Garth Harold Kelting was born icon January 13, 1945 in Linn County, Iowa, the son of Harold and Eleanor Newkirk Kelting. He graduated from Williamsburg High School in 1963 and attended Omaha Technical College, Omaha, Nebraska. He served in the Iowa National Guard. He married Norma Kinsinger in 1966 in her family home in rural Parnell. The couple resided in Williamsburg and enjoyed 30 years of marriage. Norma died in 1996. He married Sandra Cranston Hughes on November 26, 1999. Garth was a longtime manager of the Phillips 66 Truck Stop. He was a member of the Williamsburg Jaycees and Sport Hill Country Club. He enjoyed the Iowa Hawkeyes, carpentry, fishing, gardening, cooking and spending time with his family and friends.

Hildegard Schultz

Hildegard Schultz, age 92, died Friday, December 9, 2005 at Colonial Manor of Amana following a brief illness. Funeral Services: 10:00 A.M. Monday, December 12, 2005, Middle Amana Community Church, Middle Amana with Elder Mike Shoup officiating. Burial will be in the Amana Cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 5 P.M. Sunday, December 11, 2005 at the Middle Amana Community Church. Memorials may be contributed to the Amana Church Society or the charity of the donor’s choice. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo is in charge of arrangements.

She is survived by a sister, Else Dziennik of Calbe, Germany and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband George on April 19, 1978, her parents, two brothers and a sister.

Hildegard Gellart was born icon June 8, 1913 in Posen Germany, the daughter of Otto and Martha Gellart. She married George Schultz in April of 1940 in Germany.

The couple immigrated to the United States in 1950. Hildegard worked for many years at the Amana Woolen Mill as a weaver. She enjoyed gardening and traveling. She was a member of the Amana Church Society.

Frank Parvin

Frank Parvin, age 95 of Middle Amana, died Sunday, December 11, 2005 at Colonial Manor Care Center, Middle Amana following a brief illness. Funeral Services: 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, December 14, 2005 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo with Rev. Karl Heck and Elder Ivan Reihman officiating. Burial will be in the Middle Amana Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 7 P.M. Tuesday, December 13, 2005 at the funeral home. A memorial fund has been established.

He is survived by his wife Betty, two sons, Clifford “Skip” and wife Jean of West Amana, and Edward and wife Rita of Mountain Home, Arkansas; two daughters, Karen VonLienen and husband Ron of Marengo, and Susan Spidle and husband Duane of Peyton, Colorado; seven grandchildren, seventeen great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, four brothers, and a grandson.

Frank Neil Parvin was born icon July 2, 1910 in Persia, Tennessee, the son of Charles and Louvina Mooney Parvin. He received his education in the Rodgersville, Tennessee schools and served in the United States Army from 1943 to 1946. He married Elizabeth Rettig Sherman on December 9, 1946. Frank was employed as a dairy herdsman for the Amana Society for many years. He also worked in the Amana Woolen Mill, retiring in 1975. He enjoyed cooking, fishing and woodworking.
