Beata M. Sandersfeld, age 94, of South Amana, died Wednesday, January 5, 2011 at Rose Haven Nursing Home, Marengo following an extended illness. Funeral Services: 10:30 A.M. Saturday, January 8, 2011 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Conroy. Burial will be in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, Conroy, IA
Visitation: 4 to 7 P.M. Friday, January 7, 2011 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. Memorials may be contributed to Trinity Lutheran Church or the Lutheran Interparish School (LIS).
Beata is survived by a son Tom Sandersfeld of Williamsburg, a daughter Kim Knight of Tempe, AZ; seven grandchildren; two sisters, Doris Heitshusen of Luzerne and Ramona Huedepohl of Millersburg and a brother Eldon Weiss of Ladora. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Everett, and a brother Leroy Weiss.
Beata Marie Marita Weiss was born August 26, 1916 in Seward, Nebraska, the daughter of Walter William Weiss and Marie Neitzel Weiss. She was raised in Lincoln Township. She married Everett August Sandersfeld on October 16, 1941 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Lincoln Township. The couple resided in South Amana. Beata was a wife, mother and homemaker. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Conroy, past treasurer of the E.S.R., and secretary-treasurer for 17 years of the Aid Association for Lutherans local chapter. She enjoyed playing cards, and gardening.

Wilma D. Schaefer, 89 of Big Bear Lake, CA, formerly of Middle Amana, died December 30, 2005 at Doctor’s Hospital in San Bernadino, following an extended illness. Memorial services will be held at a later date. Interment will be in the Middle Amana Cemetery. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo, is in charge of local arrangements.
Wilma D. Dickel was born July 15, 1916 in Middle Amana, the daughter of Jacob and Louise Schmieder Dickel. She was educated in the Amana Society Schools and married Karl F. Schaefer in 1942 in Baltimore, MD. The couple moved to Hollywood in 1946. They managed real estate property there. He died in 1975. Wilma moved to Big Bear Lake and managed the Happy Hills Resort, owned by Milton Hofert, until it closed in 1986. Together, Mr. Hofert and Wilma donated the property to the City of Big Bear Lake to be used for the new Civic Center and Performing Arts Center, built in 1987. Wilma was known for her hard working and dedicated manner, business acumen and sharp wit. She was a kind and compassionate person and a devout practitioner of the Christian Science faith.
She is survived by two sisters, Marie Schaefer of Davenport, and Elizabeth Blechschmidt of East Amana; a brother, Willard Dickel and wife Mary Lou of Middle Amana, several nieces and nephews, and many friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Johanna Kellenberger. Memorial donations may be made to the First Church of Christ Scientist, Big Bear Lake, CA, the Amana Church, Middle Amana or the charity of donor’s choice. Alderica G. Newsom, age 85 of Riverside, formerly of Marengo, died Sunday, January 1, 2006 at her home in Riverside, from complications of cancer. Mass of Christian Burial: 10:00 A.M., Friday, January 6, 2006 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Marengo with Fr. Brian Shepley officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Marengo. Friends may call from 4 to 8 P.M. on Thursday, January 5, 2006 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo where there will be a Scripture Service at 7 P.M. Memorials may be contributed to the Hospice and Caring Hands of Iowa City.
She is survived by a daughter, Judy Newsom (Mike) of Brookfield, IL, and a son, John Greenwood (Joann) of Riverside; eleven grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, a great-great-grandchild; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, 8 brothers and sisters, and a son, George Greenwood in 1969.
Alderica Gloria Caselli was born February 1, 1920 in Chicago, IL, the daughter of Antonio and Julia Caselli. She attended and graduated from the Chicago school system. Alderica married Charles Henry Newsom on May 24, 1972 in Wheaton, IL. The couple resided in rural Marengo. She was employed as an art layout specialist in a family business and as a waitress in the past. She enjoyed scrapbooking, cards and bingo.

Leroy E. “Lee” Voigtmann, age 84 of Tucson, AZ, formerly of Marengo, died Thursday, December 29, 2005 at his daughter’s home in Vail, AZ following a brief illness. Funeral Services: 10:30 A.M. Saturday, January 7, 2006, St. John’s Lutheran Church, Marengo. Burial will be in the Marengo Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 P.M. Friday, January 6, 2006 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. A memorial fund has been established.
Survivors include his 3 children, Rev. James (Brenda); Pamela (Edward) Nied Jr., and Susan (Kevin) Churchill; 10 grandchildren, Leighanne (William) Bonnett III, Joseph, Jacob, Jenna, Marleigh, and Jamie Voigtmann, Ashleigh and Maryssa Nied, Aleighsa and Shelby Churchill; 3 great-grandchildren, Mikkaela, Ashley and Annastasiya Bonnett; a brother, Paul (Jean) Voigtmann; a sister Ruth (Mrs. Frank) Koehn as well as many nieces and nephews.
Lee was preceded in death by his wife, Mary E. Meeks, his parents, three brothers, Rev. Fred, Norman and Oris; a sister, Beata (Mrs. Clark) Hinrichs and grandchildren, Matthew, Mark, Luke, John and Esther Voigtmann.
Leroy E. “Lee” Voigtmann was born February 14, 1921 in Milwaukee, WI, the son of Fred and Louise Steinkraus Voigtmann. He moved to Lincoln Township near Victor Iowa in 1921. He was baptized into the name of the triune God on March 6, 1921. He attended St. John’s Lutheran Church School in Lincoln Township where his father taught for many years. He graduated from Williamsburg High School in 1938. Leroy worked for Sherwin-Williams Paint in Chicago and then enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, serving during World War II in England as a tech on the Nordic Bomb sight for B-17’s.
Following the war, he returned to Iowa and married Mary Meeks on May 29, 1946. Lee began working as a builder and formed the L.E.Voigtmann Construction Co., a general contracting business in Marengo, Iowa. Lee and Mary owned and operated their company for many years, building homes, commercial buildings and 19 schools. Many winters were spent in Tucson, AZ and eventually in 1968 Lee and Mary made Tucson their main residence while maintaining a home in Marengo. In Arizona, the couple owned and operated El Monterey Apartments. They, along with their children, formed Voigtmann Associates, an investment company, dealing with farming, land development and retail businesses. Mary died in 1990 after 45 years of marriage. Lee continued to spend his time between Tucson and Marengo. Later in life, he enjoyed starting the Lee Lake Estates development in Iowa County while fishing daily with his brother Oris and good friends John Danker, and Marlin Nidey. He returned to Arizona in December 2005 and passed away quietly into the Lord at his daughter’s home in Vail.
Lee was a faithful member of Faith Lutheran Church in Tucson and St. John’s Lutheran in Marengo. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion, VFW and DAV as well as a long time member of Associated General Contractors of American and Master Builders of Iowa.

Phyllis J. Patterson, age 75 of Marengo, died Monday, January 2, 2006 at Rose Haven Nursing Home following a brief illness. Graveside Services, 1:00 P.M. Thursday, January 5, 2006 at the Marengo Cemetery with Rev. Louis Bell officiating. Friends may call from 2 to 7 P.M. Wednesday, January 4 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo with the family present from 4 to 7 P.M. Memorials may be contributed to the Marengo Library Fund or Amenity Hospice.
Survivors include two sons, Jack and wife Micky of Marengo and Tom and wife Julie of Covina, CA; two grandchildren, Brad Patterson and fiancee Tamara of Marengo and Stacy Rump and husband Jim of Keystone; two step-grandchildren, Alex and Lenore Zoll; four great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Duane “Bolly” Patterson and two brothers, Truman and Lawrence.
Phyllis Jane Ramsell was born July 4, 1930 in Eldora, Iowa, the daughter of Thomas and Ethel Durr Ramsell. She received her education in the Eldora schools and graduated from Marengo High School in 1948. She married Duane “Bolly” Patterson on June 10, 1948 in Macomb, IL. Phyllis was employed as a secretary over the years at Iowa Valley Schools, Amana Refrigeration, Oakdale in Iowa City, and for Iowa Social Services in Marengo. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Marengo.

Lauren W. Denzler, age 68, died Monday, January 2, 2006 at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids, following a short illness. Funeral Services: 10:00 A.M. Thursday, January 5, 2006 at the First United Methodist Church in Marengo with Rev. Tom Carver officiating. Burial will be in the Koszta Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 P.M. Wednesday, January 4, 2006 at the First United Methodist Church. A memorial fund has been established. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo is in charge of arrangements.
He is survived by his wife Sharon; three children, Johnnette Lynn Ulch (Robert) of Alexandria, VA, Lori Lynn Ehlen (Andy) of Belle Plaine, and Kim Lynn Hynek (Curt) of Swisher; six grandchildren, Megan, Ben, and Jacob Ehlen of Belle Plaine, and Jesse, Calvin and Coilee Hynek of Swisher; and 2 sisters, Sharon Jacobs (Robert) of Ladora, and Linda Cruise (John) of Cedar Rapids. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Lauren Wayne Denzler was born August 18, 1937 in Marengo, Iowa, the son of Everette Wayne and Dena Jeannette Cronbaugh Denzler. He graduated from Marengo High School in 1955. Lauren married Sharon Kay Willie on January 14, 1961 at the First United Methodist Church in Marengo. The couple farmed in Iowa County. Lauren was a member of the National Guard for 10 years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing in Canada, and auctions. He loved his grandchildren and especially enjoyed spending time with them.

Ernest D. Dye, age 79, died Wednesday, December 21, 2005 at the Marengo Memorial Hospital following a brief illness. Funeral Services: 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, December 28, 2005 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo with Rev. Douglas Morton officiating. Burial will be in the Marengo Cemetery with military honors conducted by Marengo American Legion Post #76. Friends may call from 4 to 8 P.M. Tuesday, December 27, 2005 at the funeral home. A memorial fund has been established.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley, who resides at the Marengo Memorial Hospital; three children, Vera Dye of North English, Kevin Dye and wife Karen of Williamsburg, and Deanne Mumm and husband Todd of Parnell; ten grandchildren, Tiffany Dye, Jacob Dye, Amanda Glandorf, Katie Glandorf, Bryson Mumm, Braden Mumm, Richard Street II, Steve Street, Michael Street, and Melissa Street; a brother, Keith and wife Joyce of Keokuk and two sisters, Miriam Snider and husband Glen of San Antonio, TX, and Linda Hayes and husband John of Montrose, IA. His parents preceded him in death.
Ernest Delbert Dye was born November 23, 1926 in Montrose, Iowa, the son of James Irving Dye and Esther Elizabeth VanAusdall Dye. He received his education in the Montrose schools and graduated from Montrose High School in 1945. He graduated from the State of Iowa Barber College and was employed as a barber in Stockport, Iowa in the 1950’s. In 1954 he moved to North English and operated a barbershop there until 1976. Ernie married Shirley Schindler on June 23, 1957 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Marengo. He also was employed by Amana Refrigeration for 16 years.
Ernest was a past member of the North English Rotary Club, the Commercial Club, and was a volunteer fireman. He was a past member of the North English City Council and a member of Local 1526 Machinists at Amana. He enjoyed woodworking and sports, especially Chicago Cubs baseball. He was an avid Hawkeye football fan.

Jack F. “Jackie” Smith, age 65, died Tuesday evening, December 27, 2005 at Rose Haven Nursing Home, Marengo following a brief illness. Funeral Services: 10:30 A.M. Saturday, December 31, 2005 at First United Methodist Church in Marengo with Rev. Morris Hurd officiating. Private family inurnment services will be at a later date. Friends may call from 4 to 8 P.M. Friday, December 30, 2005 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. A memorial fund has been established.
He is survived by a brother, Gene Smith and wife Lucy of Cedar Rapids, a nephew, Rick Smith; a niece Kim Hodas; and a great-nephew Michael Roeseler. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Jim Smith and a nephew, Kerry Smith.
Jack F. Smith was born July 18, 1940 in Marengo, Iowa, the son of Thomas “Jack” and Evelyn Fesler Smith. He was a life-long resident of Marengo and attended the Iowa Valley schools. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church. Jack enjoyed attending bible study at Rose Haven, and was Marengo’s #1 “Tiger Sports” and “Iowa Hawkeye” fan.

Hildegard Schultz, age 92, died Friday, December 9, 2005 at Colonial Manor of Amana following a brief illness. Funeral Services: 10:00 A.M. Monday, December 12, 2005, Middle Amana Community Church, Middle Amana with Elder Mike Shoup officiating. Burial will be in the Amana Cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 5 P.M. Sunday, December 11, 2005 at the Middle Amana Community Church. Memorials may be contributed to the Amana Church Society or the charity of the donor’s choice. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo is in charge of arrangements.
She is survived by a sister, Else Dziennik of Calbe, Germany and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband George on April 19, 1978, her parents, two brothers and a sister.
Hildegard Gellart was born June 8, 1913 in Posen Germany, the daughter of Otto and Martha Gellart. She married George Schultz in April of 1940 in Germany. The couple immigrated to the United States in 1950. Hildegard worked for many years at the Amana Woolen Mill as a weaver. She enjoyed gardening and traveling. She was a member of the Amana Church Society.
