Frank Parvin, age 95 of Middle Amana, died Sunday, December 11, 2005 at Colonial Manor Care Center, Middle Amana following a brief illness. Funeral Services: 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, December 14, 2005 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo with Rev. Karl Heck and Elder Ivan Reihman officiating. Burial will be in the Middle Amana Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 7 P.M. Tuesday, December 13, 2005 at the funeral home. A memorial fund has been established.
He is survived by his wife Betty, two sons, Clifford “Skip” and wife Jean of West Amana, and Edward and wife Rita of Mountain Home, Arkansas; two daughters, Karen VonLienen and husband Ron of Marengo, and Susan Spidle and husband Duane of Peyton, Colorado; seven grandchildren, seventeen great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, four brothers, and a grandson.
Frank Neil Parvin was born July 2, 1910 in Persia, Tennessee, the son of Charles and Louvina Mooney Parvin. He received his education in the Rodgersville, Tennessee schools and served in the United States Army from 1943 to 1946. He married Elizabeth Rettig Sherman on December 9, 1946. Frank was employed as a dairy herdsman for the Amana Society for many years. He also worked in the Amana Woolen Mill, retiring in 1975. He enjoyed cooking, fishing and woodworking.

John N. Jurjevich, age 81 of Marengo, formerly of Victor, died Tuesday, December 20, 2005 at the Marengo Memorial Hospital following an extended illness. Mass of Christian Burial: 1:30 P.M. Friday, December 23, 2005 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Marengo with Fr. Joseph Roost officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Victor, Iowa. Friends may call Friday, December 23, 2005 from noon until service time at the church. Memorials may be contributed to St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, the Iowa County Hospice of Compassion, or the Iowa County Food Bank. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo is in charge of arrangements.
He is survived by a sister, Kay Chappuis (Steve) of Lakewood, WA; a nephew, Steve Chappuis (Jan) of Portland, OR; a niece Suzanne Winkles (Bill) of Seattle, WA and a brother-in-law, John Tibben and family of Victor. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his wife, Marna in 1989.
John Nicholas Jurjevich was born August 2, 1924 in Lincoln, Illinois, the son of John and Antonett Karlovich Jurjevich. He grew up in Galesburg. John served in the U.S. Army Air Force from 1943-1945 during World War II. Following his military service, John graduated from Arizona State University in Tempe and then continued his education receiving a master’s degree in Geography/Cartography from Northwestern University in Evanston, IL. During his college career, he worked at country clubs in Arizona, and caddied for several professional golfers. Following graduation, John was employed as a cartographer/editorial assistant by the Denoyer-Geppert Company in Chicago where he met his wife-to-be Marna Tibben. The couple married on November 9, 1963 in Chicago. They eventually moved to Elmhurst and John joined the staff at Elmhurst College as a professor of geography for 9 years. During that time, John spent a summer traveling around the world, gathering teaching and topic information for the classroom. While living and working in Chicago, John and Marna enjoyed traveling to Victor, to visit the Tibben family farm. In the early 1970’s the couple moved to Victor, where John worked in new building and real estate sales for several years.
John was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Marengo, the National Geographic Society, the Association of American Geographers and was a life-long member in the Croatian Fraternal Union. He was a hospice volunteer and enjoyed traveling, reading, fishing, cemeteries and the Iowa Hawkeyes.

Helen E. Jones, age 97, died Sunday, January 29, 2006 at Highland Ridge Care Center, Williamsburg, following a brief illness. Mass of Christian Burial: 10:30 A.M. Thursday, February 2, 2006, St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Williamsburg with Fr. Joseph Roost officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Church Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 P.M. Wednesday, February 1, 2006 at St. Mary’s Parish Hall, Williamsburg where there will be a Scripture Service at 6:30 P.M. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo is in charge of arrangements.
She is survived by a brother, Glenn McCabe of Williamsburg and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Truman in January 1969; 3 sisters, Sr. Ann Marita McCabe, Marietta Schamberger, and Margaret Louberto; and 3 brothers, Edward, James and Harold McCabe.
Helen Elizabeth McCabe was born December 13, 1908 in Iowa County, Iowa, the daughter of John F. and Maude Mary White McCabe. She attended the Williamsburg schools and graduated from Williamsburg High School in 1927. She married Truman Aubrey Jones on August 19, 1935 at St. Mary’s Rectory in Williamsburg. Helen was employed in various businesses around Williamsburg, most recently as an office clerk with the ASCS office in Williamsburg. She retired from there in 1965 after 20 years of employment.
Helen was a member of the Iowa County Historical Society, the Williamsburg American Legion Auxiliary, and the Royal Neighbors of America. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Williamsburg, St. Mary’s Altar and Rosary Society, St. Mary’s Cemetery Board, and the Catholic Order of Foresters. She enjoyed traveling, sewing, reading, and crossword puzzles. Helen was an avid letter writer, and enjoyed writing poetry.

Laurel J. Gerard, age 87 of Marengo, died Sunday, January 29, 2006 at St. Luke’s Hospital, Cedar Rapids, following an extended illness. Funeral Services: 10:30 A.M. Wednesday, February 1, 2006 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Marengo with Rev. Douglas Morton officiating. Burial will be in the Marengo Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 P.M. Tuesday, January 31, 2006 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. A memorial fund has been established.
Casket bearers are John Everett, Eric Disterhoft, Dale Gerard, Jody Gerard, Ryan Bazyn, and Pete Bazyn.
Laurel is survived by his wife Jo; two sons, Bob and wife Janet of Marengo, and Jerry “Jake” and wife Mary of Belle Plaine; four daughters, Judy Everett of Newhall, Vicki Foubert of Marengo, Susie Dutton and husband Wilson of Hornbeak, TN, and Rosemary “Rosi” Disterhoft and husband James of Marengo; 12 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren. In addition, he is survived by five sisters, Irene Hartgrave and Anna Hartgrave of Cedar Rapids, Mary Brecht of Marengo, Bonita Albert of East Amana and Twyla Coulon of Amana. He was preceded in death by his parents, and four brothers, Gene, Glen, Gerald, and Russell.
Laurel John Gerard was born May 12, 1918 at Genoa Bluff in Iowa County, the son of Laurel N. and Josephine Kroul Gerard. He attended the Iowa County schools and married Josephine Bostian on March 1, 1939 at the Ohio Church Parsonage, rural Ladora. Laurel farmed in the area for many years. Laurel also was employed by the Iowa Highway Commission and most recently at Marengo Ready Mix.

Phyllis J. Patterson, age 75 of Marengo, died Monday, January 2, 2006 at Rose Haven Nursing Home following a brief illness. Graveside Services, 1:00 P.M. Thursday, January 5, 2006 at the Marengo Cemetery with Rev. Louis Bell officiating. Friends may call from 2 to 7 P.M. Wednesday, January 4 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo with the family present from 4 to 7 P.M. Memorials may be contributed to the Marengo Library Fund or Amenity Hospice.
Survivors include two sons, Jack and wife Micky of Marengo and Tom and wife Julie of Covina, CA; two grandchildren, Brad Patterson and fiancee Tamara of Marengo and Stacy Rump and husband Jim of Keystone; two step-grandchildren, Alex and Lenore Zoll; four great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Duane “Bolly” Patterson and two brothers, Truman and Lawrence.
Phyllis Jane Ramsell was born July 4, 1930 in Eldora, Iowa, the daughter of Thomas and Ethel Durr Ramsell. She received her education in the Eldora schools and graduated from Marengo High School in 1948. She married Duane “Bolly” Patterson on June 10, 1948 in Macomb, IL. Phyllis was employed as a secretary over the years at Iowa Valley Schools, Amana Refrigeration, Oakdale in Iowa City, and for Iowa Social Services in Marengo. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Marengo.

Emma Johanna Zimmerman, age 80, died Sunday, January 8, 2006 at Colonial Manor Care Center in Middle Amana following a lengthy illness. Memorial Services: 11:00 A.M. Friday, January 13, 2006 at the Middle Amana Community Church, Middle Amana, with Elder Tony Berger officiating. Inurnment will be at a later date in the Amana Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Emma donated her body to the University of Iowa. Memorials may be contributed to Camp Courageous or the Cedar Valley Humane Society. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo is in charge of arrangements.
She is survived by a son, Peter of Fort Dodge; a granddaughter, Daniele Bajus and husband Cory of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada; three great-grandchildren, Carla, Jacob and Aaron Bajus; a sister, Henrietta Lastuvka and husband Joe of Des Moines, and a sister-in-law, Marie Stamen and husband Gilbert of Amana, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in 1999, 2 daughters, Carla Vido in 1993, and Ann Zimmerman in 1995.
Emma Johanna Kolb was born July 17, 1925 in Homestead, Iowa, the daughter of Carl and Ernestine Goerler Kolb. She received her education in the Amana schools and graduated from Amana High School in 1945. She attended and graduated from Coe College in Cedar Rapids in 1948. Emma married Paul Zimmerman on June 18, 1949 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Following her marriage, Emma taught private piano lessons for many years. She enjoyed reading, gardening, cooking, music and crafts and the companionship of her cats. She displayed much of her needlework in her room at Colonial Manor. She was a member of the Amana Church Society.
The family would like to thank the staff at Colonial Manor and Amenity Hospice for their help and compassion in caring for Emma. They also thank the many relatives and friends who visited her faithfully during her stay at Colonial Manor.

Alderica G. Newsom, age 85 of Riverside, formerly of Marengo, died Sunday, January 1, 2006 at her home in Riverside, from complications of cancer. Mass of Christian Burial: 10:00 A.M., Friday, January 6, 2006 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Marengo with Fr. Brian Shepley officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Marengo. Friends may call from 4 to 8 P.M. on Thursday, January 5, 2006 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo where there will be a Scripture Service at 7 P.M. Memorials may be contributed to the Hospice and Caring Hands of Iowa City.
She is survived by a daughter, Judy Newsom (Mike) of Brookfield, IL, and a son, John Greenwood (Joann) of Riverside; eleven grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, a great-great-grandchild; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, 8 brothers and sisters, and a son, George Greenwood in 1969.
Alderica Gloria Caselli was born February 1, 1920 in Chicago, IL, the daughter of Antonio and Julia Caselli. She attended and graduated from the Chicago school system. Alderica married Charles Henry Newsom on May 24, 1972 in Wheaton, IL. The couple resided in rural Marengo. She was employed as an art layout specialist in a family business and as a waitress in the past. She enjoyed scrapbooking, cards and bingo.

Wilma D. Schaefer, 89 of Big Bear Lake, CA, formerly of Middle Amana, died December 30, 2005 at Doctor’s Hospital in San Bernadino, following an extended illness. Memorial services will be held at a later date. Interment will be in the Middle Amana Cemetery. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo, is in charge of local arrangements.
Wilma D. Dickel was born July 15, 1916 in Middle Amana, the daughter of Jacob and Louise Schmieder Dickel. She was educated in the Amana Society Schools and married Karl F. Schaefer in 1942 in Baltimore, MD. The couple moved to Hollywood in 1946. They managed real estate property there. He died in 1975. Wilma moved to Big Bear Lake and managed the Happy Hills Resort, owned by Milton Hofert, until it closed in 1986. Together, Mr. Hofert and Wilma donated the property to the City of Big Bear Lake to be used for the new Civic Center and Performing Arts Center, built in 1987. Wilma was known for her hard working and dedicated manner, business acumen and sharp wit. She was a kind and compassionate person and a devout practitioner of the Christian Science faith.
She is survived by two sisters, Marie Schaefer of Davenport, and Elizabeth Blechschmidt of East Amana; a brother, Willard Dickel and wife Mary Lou of Middle Amana, several nieces and nephews, and many friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Johanna Kellenberger. Memorial donations may be made to the First Church of Christ Scientist, Big Bear Lake, CA, the Amana Church, Middle Amana or the charity of donor’s choice.
