Dorothy “Dottee” E. Newkirk, age 74 of Huntley, IL and formerly of Marengo, died peacefully on September 27, 2006 with her family by her side. Graveside Memorial Service: 11:00 A.M. Saturday, November 11, 2006 at the Marengo Cemetery with Rev. Gerald Rife officiating. Lunch and fellowship will follow at the First Presbyterian Church, Marengo. Memorials may be contributed to the Living Waters Lutheran Church, 1808 Miller Road, Crystal Lake, IL. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo is in charge of local arrangements.
She is survived by her husband, Harlan, a daughter, Lisa Newkirk Reimler and husband John of Holmen, WI; a son, Jeffrey A. Newkirk and wife Dian of Cary, IL; and five grandchildren, Benjamin and Darcy Reimler and Payton, Emma and Mary Newkirk. She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Jean Davenport.
Dorothy E. Ellis was born on February 29, 1932 in Marengo, the daughter of Glenn A. and Fanny M. (McQuitty) Ellis. She graduated from Grinnell College in 1954 with a B.A. in Speech Therapy and English. She married high school sweetheart Harlan Newkirk on July 30, 1955 at the First Presbyterian Church in Marengo. She taught speech therapy for four years before becoming a mother to Lisa and Jeffrey. Dottee was an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Lansing, IL and later at the Living Waters Lutheran Church of Crystal Lake, IL. She was also an active member of her local PEO chapter.
Dottee was loved and admired by all who knew her and she will be greatly missed. She enjoyed literature, music, card playing, travel, crossword puzzles, theatre, but most importantly her family. Love and laughter were always abundant in her presence.

Lawrence Francis Plotz, age 90, died Wednesday, November 22, 2006 at Rose Haven Nursing Home in Marengo. Mass of Christian Burial: 10:00 A.M. Saturday, November 25, 2006 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Marengo with Fr. Joseph Roost officiating. Burial will be in St. Michael’s Cemetery, rural Norway with military honors. Friends may call from 3 to 6 P.M. Friday, November 24, 2006 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo where there will be a Scripture Service at 6 P.M. A memorial fund has been established.
He is survived by his wife, Helen; a son, Larry Plotz and wife Sherry of Marion; three daughters, Karen Wesack and husband Steve of Middle Amana, Carol Bradfield of Denver, IA, and Marian Consumano and husband Carl of Manassas, VA; a stepson, John Connor and wife Mary of Manchester; a stepdaughter, Joanne Freshour of Cedar Rapids; nine grandchildren, and 6 step-grandchildren. He is also survived by two brothers, Martin Plotz and wife Mildred of Amana, and Walter Plotz and wife Dolores of Swisher; four sisters, Irene LaGrange of Amana; Margaret Frimml of Tama; Agnes Nie of Jesup; and Sister Charmaine Plotz of Dubuque. He was preceded in death by his first wife Violet in 1974, his parents, a sister Lucille Plotz, a brother, Edward and a grandson, Chad Wesack.
Lawrence Francis Plotz was born July 13, 1916 in rural Amana, Iowa County, Iowa, the son of Frank and Anna Huebl Plotz. He received his education in the Norway parochial school. He owned and operated a saw mill and later worked for the Amana Society. Lawrence served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He married Violet Rotella on November 25, 1943 at Bronx, NY. She died in 1974. He married Helen Bishop Connor on August 30, 1974 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Norway. He has resided in Marengo since 1974.
Lawrence was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, serving as an usher for over 30 years. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Marengo American Legion Post #76. He enjoyed playing cards and fishing.

Christa Annamarie Schmidt, age 84, died Tuesday, November 28, 2006 at Colonial Manor of Amana following a brief illness. Funeral Services: 10:00 A.M. Friday, December 1, 2006, Middle Amana Community Church with Elder Tony Berger officiating. Burial will be in the Middle Amana Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 7 P.M. Thursday, November 30, 2006 at the Middle Amana Community Church. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo is in charge of arrangements.
She is survived by a son, Rainer and wife Georgia of Cedar Rapids; a daughter, Shirley Schmidt of Middle Amana; three grandchildren, Aaron (Karla) Schmidt of Waucoma, Christopher Schmidt of Cedar Rapids, and Sarah Schmidt also of Cedar Rapids; three great-grandchildren, Karissa and Kourtney Schmidt and Leah Schmidt. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Kurt Axel Schmidt in 1997.
Christa Annamarie Erich was born September 14, 1922 in Hamburg, Germany, the daughter of Max and Emma Meier Erich. She married Kurt Schmidt on March 1, 1947 in Hamburg, Germany. The couple moved to the United States in 1950, settling in Amana. Christa was employed as a waitress at the Ox Yoke for over 30 years. She enjoyed knitting mittens and dancing, was an excellent cook, and especially enjoyed her coffee breaks. Christa was a member of the Amana Church Society. She was a loving and caring person, full of laughter and will be greatly missed by her family and many friends.

Marie E. Ehrmann, age 78, died Sunday, October 22, 2006 at Mercy Medical Center, Cedar Rapids, following an extended illness. Funeral Services: 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, October 25, 2006 at the Middle Amana Community Church, Middle Amana, with Elder Betsy Momany officiating. Burial will be in the East Amana Cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 7 P.M. Tuesday, October 24, 2006 at the Middle Amana Church. Memorials may be contributed to the Amana Sunday School or the American Diabetes Association. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo is in charge of arrangements.
She is survived by two sons, Paul (Susan) of Hughson, CA and Carl (Debbie) of Amana; a daughter, Kris Ehrmann of Amana; eight grandchildren, David and Bobby Ehrmann, Darcy, Carrie and Jacob Ehrmann, Nick (Lindsay) Kleinmeyer, and Kimberly and Andrew Kleinmeyer. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Roy on June 27, 2006.
Marie Emaline Schaefer was born October 21, 1928 in East Amana, Iowa, the daughter of Harry and Pauline Trumpold Schaefer. She graduated from Amana High School in 1947 and married Roy Henry Ehrmann on September 25, 1948 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Besides being a homemaker, Marie was a waitress at Colony Inn from 1947 until 1998. She was a member of the Amana Church Society. Marie was a “people person”, enjoying conversation with folks and always having the time to visit.

Paul Hursh, 87, of rural Marengo, Iowa, died Wednesday morning, November 1, at the Iowa Veteran’s Home in Marshalltown, Iowa, where he had resided since March, 2006. Memorial Service: 2 p.m. Sunday, November 12, 2006, at the First Presbyterian Church in Marengo with Rev. Gerald Rife officiating. Memorials may be contributed to the First Presbyterian Church or the Iowa County Conservation Board to be used in its public and educational programs. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo, is in charge of arrangements.
Paul is survived by his children Daniel Hursh, Morgantown, West Virginia; Lori Rathje and husband Dean, Ely, Iowa; and Nicholas Hursh and wife Cheryl, Waseca, Minnesota; and his grandchildren Megan Hursh, McMinnville, Oregon; Sarah Hursh, Forks, Washington; Jessica Hess, Minneapolis, Minnesota; and John Rathje, Ely, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Allen and Robert Hursh, sister Alma Balkin, and wife Dorothy.
Paul Eugene Hursh was born September 17, 1919, south of Marengo, Iowa, the son of Allen Everitt Hursh and Hattie Mae Smith. He attended Fairview Country School and graduated from Marengo High School in 1936. A veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict, Mr. Hursh later owned and operated an agricultural aviation business with his brother and partner Allen.
He was a past Master of the Marengo Masonic Lodge and an officer of the Grand Lodge of Iowa. He belonged to the Izaak Walton League and held numerous offices in the Iowa and national chapters of the Agricultural Aviators’ Association. In his retirement, he was active in the American Legion Post in Marengo and served enthusiastically on a committee that designed and raised funds to build a monument to Iowa County Veterans. Paul was a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association, and a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Marengo.
An avid hunter, fisherman and lover of nature, Mr. Hursh sat on the Iowa County Conservation Board and, in 1985, deeded 28 acres of woodland adjoining his home to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources as a wildlife preserve. This gift to the state was designed to guarantee that even after Paul’s death, wildlife would still have “a little spot to get into.” He was honored by the national Izaak Walton League that year for his conservation work. The league, at its national convention in 1985, said Hursh “almost single-handedly transformed his 28-acre property into a haven for wildlife.” (source: CR Gazette, August 10, 1985)
Paul’s body was deeded to University of Iowa Hospitals for research. His cremains will be buried at a graveside ceremony next year.

Shirley N. Loupee, age 81, passed away peacefully from complications of cancer, with her family by her side on Wednesday, November 1, 2006 at a residence in Iowa City. Funeral Services: 11:00 A.M. Monday, November 6, 2006 at First Presbyterian Church in Williamsburg with Rev. Robin Kash officiating. Private inurnment will be at a later date. Friends may call from 4 to 7 P.M. Sunday, November 5, 2006 at the church. Memorials may be contributed to Iowa County Hospice of Compassion or Amenity Hospice. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo is in charge of arrangements.
She is survived by three children, Rhonda Spratt and husband Bill of Coralville, Douglas Loupee and wife Trish of Littleton, CO, and Danette Raley and husband John of Iowa City; eight grandchildren, Ryan Spratt, Christopher, Kyle, Cory, and Kelsey Loupee, Jonathan, Nicholas, and Elizabeth Raley.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband George Martin Loupee, Jr., a son, John David Loupee, two brothers, Donald and Robert Altman, and a nephew, John Altman.
Shirley Nellie Altman was born July 7, 1925 at Mora, MN, the daughter of John and Bessie Marie Cree Altman. She graduated from Mitchellville High School in 1943. She then attended cosmetology school in Des Moines. She married George Martin Loupee, Jr. on June 12, 1955 at the Altoona Christian Church, Altoona, IA. She operated a beauty shop from her home in Altoona before moving to Williamsburg in 1967. The couple owned and operated a variety store in Williamsburg, which she continued to operate following George’s death in 1982.
Shirley was a member of the Williamsburg American Legion Auxiliary, the Eastern Star, T.o.p.s., the Republican Women, the Garden Club, Hills Friends Club, and the First Presbyterian Church and Mariner’s Club.
Shirley will be greatly missed by her family. She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and friend to all. She enjoyed traveling, music and theatre. She spent her life caring for and loving her family and friends. Her greatest joy was telling people about her family.

Arthur H. “Art” Stanerson, age 90, formerly of Conroy, died Sunday morning, July 22, 2007 at Rose Haven Nursing Home in Marengo following an extended illness. Funeral Services: 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, July 25, 2007, First Lutheran Church, rural Conroy, with Rev. Jackie Tjarks officiating. Burial will be in the First Lutheran Church Cemetery with military honors. Friends may call from 4 to 7 P.M. Tuesday, July 24, 2007 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo where there will be a Masonic Service at 7 P.M. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be contributed to the Conroy Park (C.C.R.), or First Lutheran Church, Conroy.
He is survived by a brother Walter Stanerson of Williamsburg, a sister Ethel Hartz of Marengo, a sister-in-law, Ethel Stanerson of Williamsburg and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Ed Stanerson, a sister Helen Overbaugh and brother-in-laws Don Overbaugh and Maurice Hartz, Sr. and a sister-in-law, Mae Stanerson.
Arthur Halvor Stanerson was born March 1, 1917 in rural Conroy, Iowa County, Iowa, the son of Staner and Helen Mae Groesbeck Stanerson. He attended Hilton Consolidated School in Conroy. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, stationed at Camp Callan in San Diego, CA. Art attended diesel engine school and entered into partnership with his brothers Walt and Ed at Stanerson Garage and Oil Company in Conroy. He drove school bus for nine years. He later operated the fuel and gas truck for Conroy Co-op until his retirement in 1976. Due to failing health, Arthur moved to Rose Haven Nursing Home in 2003.
Art enjoyed playing golf and the coffee times at Stanerson Implement, in Conroy. He had a lifelong love of motorcycles. He liked to spend time at his boathouse in Cedar Rapids, and enjoyed snowmobiling in the winter.
Art was a member of First Lutheran Church, rural Conroy, the Stellapolis Lodge #391 of Williamsburg, and the Marengo American Legion Post #76.

Martina “Tina” Milder, age 53, died Tuesday, July 17, 2007 at her home following a four month battle with Glimoblastoma multiform brain cancer. Funeral Services: 11:00 A.M. Saturday, July 21, 2007, Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo with Drew Disterhoft officiating. Private family inurnment services will be at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Iowa City at a later date. Friends may call from 4 to 8 P.M. Friday, July 20, 2007 at the funeral home. A memorial fund has been established.
She is survived by her husband of 37 years, Joseph Milder; three daughters, Melanie Ahrens (Chris) of Parnell, Jolene Slaymaker (Shawn) of Williamsburg and Cassandra Milder of Williamsburg; two sons, Jacob Milder and Philip Milder of Williamsburg; six grandchildren, Erikah Milder, Zackery Milder, Kristopher Brummond, Samantha Slaymaker, Caitlynn Slaymaker, and Shawn “Alex” Slaymaker and three step-grandchildren, Rachel Ahrens, Zachary Ahrens and Lucas Ahrens. In addition she is survived by her mother, Catarina Delgado of Grand Forks, ND and her siblings, Antonia Larson (Terry), Alfredo Martinez and Silvia Espinoza all of Grand Forks, and Esperanza “Bumbee” Grazier (Clark) of Fort Worth, TX. She was preceded in death by her father, Sotoro G. Martinez, her step-father, Solomon Delgado and a nephew Jeremy Larson.
Martina "Tina" was born October 1, 1953 in Fort Hancock, TX, the daughter of Sotero and Catarina Sanchez Martinez. Her family moved to Grand Forks, North Dakota where Tina received her education in the North Dakota schools. She worked at the Officers Club where she met Joseph Milder and the couple married on July 9, 1970 in Sisseton, South Dakota. They moved to Florida and their first daughter, Melanie was born on November 19, 1971. Joe was stationed in Alaska at Elmendorf Air Force Base, where Martina worked at the NCO Club for four years as a cook. Daughter Jolene was born on July 1, 1974. In 1976 they returned to Grand Forks where Tina was employed at a bowling alley and golf club as a short order cook. In 1979 the family moved to West Branch, Iowa where Tina worked at Oral B in Iowa City for 10 years. During this time she attended Kirkwood Community College where she received an associate degree. Their son, Jacob was born January 11, 1981. They moved to Parnell where they resided for over 25 years. Cassandra was born March 25, 1983. Tina then was employed by McDonalds, where she helped open and manage the store for the next year. Later she worked at ReXam Release as a press operator for ten years. During this time Philip was born December 12, 1985. In 1999, the family relocated one last time to Williamsburg where she was employed by Williamsburg Manufacturing as a welder where she remained until the time of her passing. Tina enjoyed collecting snowmen and spending time at her summer home in Lansing, Iowa. Most of all, she enjoyed reading and spending time with her family. She was a pillar of strength and wisdom and will be greatly missed by all that knew her.
