Levi D. Mast, age 75, died Sunday April 13, 2008 at Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha following an extended illness. Funeral Services: 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, April 16, 2008 Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo with Kim Vogel, Mercy Hospice Chaplain officiating. Friends may call from 5 to 7 P.M. Tuesday, April 15, 2008 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. Memorials may be contributed to the Hospice House of Mercy, Hiawatha.
Lee is survived by his fiancée, Janet Morrison of Marengo, two daughters, Brenda Jones and husband Jerry of Watkins and Sandra Means and husband Jerry of Cedar Rapids; five grandchildren, Erin Brunston of Cedar Rapids, Katie Mixdorf and husband Phillip of Cedar Rapids, Amanda Jones of Watkins, Justin Carder and fiancée Chrissy Lindeman of Cedar Rapids, and Cheryl Carder also of Cedar Rapids; four great-grandchildren, Jayson Jones, Michael and Thomas Brunston and Kaylyn Cates; two brothers and six sisters.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Lois, three brothers, a grandson Michael Clothier and a great grandson Shawn Mixdorf.
Levi D. Mast was born July 4, 1932 in Hutchinson, Kansas, the son of Daniel Mast, Sr. and Katie Bontrager Mast. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. Levi married Lois Kottman in 1955 at Caledonia, MN. She died in 1993. Levi was a route salesman for a greeting card company. He was a member of the V.F.W. in Cedar Rapids and the Marengo American Legion Post #76. He enjoyed woodworking, farming with the Stevensons, and playing Skipbo and Blitz. He also raised, trained and showed Morgan horses.

Elizabeth Christine “Betty” Wetjen, age 97, of Amana, died Monday, September 8, 2008 at Colonial Manor of Amana, from complications of advanced age. Memorial Service: 10:30 A.M. Thursday, September 11, 2008, St. John’s Lutheran Church, Homestead, Iowa with Rev. Wayne Woolery officiating. Inurnment will be in St. John’s Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Memorials may be directed to St. John’s Lutheran Church, Homestead, or Essence of Life Hospice, Amana. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo is in charge of arrangements.
She is survived by her daughter Maureen Thalacker and husband Ronald of Amana, three grandchildren, John, Steve and Dave Thalacker and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband John in 1986, three sisters, Mary Reihman, Louise Haas, and Leni Schuerer, three brothers, Fred, Paul, and William Oehl, and an infant granddaughter.
Elizabeth Christine Oehl was born September 25, 1910 in Amana, Iowa, the daughter of Fred and Louise Roemig Oehl. She received her education in the Amana schools and married John Wetjen on November 29, 1952 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, in Homestead, Iowa. Besides being a homemaker, Betty worked at the Amana Woolen Mill, and also was clerk at the Amana Post Office. She served as acting postmaster for a short time. Later in life, Betty worked part time at the Sandstone Winery. Betty was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Homestead.

Geraldine T. Hanson, age 95, died Thursday, September 4, 2008 at Highland Ridge Care Center in Williamsburg, following an extended illness. Mass of Christian Burial: 10:00 A.M. Monday, September 8, 2008, St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Williamsburg with Fr. Joseph Roost officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Williamsburg. Friends may call from 5 to 7 P.M. Sunday, September 7, 2008 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church where there will be a Scripture service at 5 P.M. A memorial fund has been established. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo is in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include two sons, Michael and wife Sherry of Butte, MT and Stephen and wife Loretta of Williamsburg; six grandchildren Dana Hanson Monroe (Monte) of Darby, MT, Barbara Hanson Romerio (Chuck) of Whitehall, MT, John Michael Hanson of San Diego, CA, Conn Hanson of New York City, Morgan Hanson (Angela) of Pittsburg, PA and Hanorah Hanson Curry (Aaron) of Washington, D.C. and six great-grandchildren, Marisa, Nolan and Kyle Romerio, Logan Monroe and Thomas and James Hanson: a brother Jack Griffin of Cedar Rapids and a brother-in-law, Bernard Hanson, New Haven, CT. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Robert L. Hanson, a daughter, Nancy Hanson Prentice, two brothers, James and Francis Griffin, and a sister Mary May.
Geraldine Theresa Griffin was born August 21, 1913 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the daughter of John and Anna Molumby Griffin. She graduated from Immaculate Conception High School in Cedar Rapids in 1931. She was employed as a bookkeeper for Witwer Grocery Company. Geraldine married Robert L Hanson on September 2, 1937 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Cedar Rapids. The couple settled in Williamsburg, Iowa. Geraldine enjoyed knitting and crocheting for her children and grandchildren. She collected antiques and spent many joyful hours caring for her flowerbeds.

Richard D. Trumpold, age 72, of Middle Amana, died Thursday, September 4, 2008 at the Marengo Memorial Hospital of brain cancer. Funeral Services: 1:00 P.M. Monday, September 8, 2008 at the Middle Amana Community Church, Middle Amana with Elder Eleanor Hoehnle officiating. Burial will be in the Middle Amana Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 5 P.M. Sunday, September 7, 2008 at the Middle Amana Community Church. A memorial fund has been established. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo is in charge of arrangements.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Marilyn; two daughters, Pam Lockhart of Cedar Rapids and Cheri Kirk (James) also of Cedar Rapids; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a brother, Henry Trumpold (Janice) of Marengo, and a sister-in-law, Carolyn Trumpold of Middle Amana. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Clifford and John and a sister, Dorothy Graesser, and a son-in-law Robert Lockhart.
Richard Donald Trumpold was born November 7, 1935 in Middle Amana, Iowa, the son of Rudolph and Maria Buerkin Trumpold. He received his education in the Amana schools. He served in the Army Reserves during the Korean Conflict and then served in the U.S. Army for two years. Richard married Marilyn Blessing on June 6, 1954 in Cedar Rapids. He was employed Quaker Oats from 1957 to 1991. He was a supervisor from 1980 until retiring. Following his retirement, he worked at the Amana Furniture Shop in Amana.
Richard enjoyed woodworking, playing pool, watching pro wrestling and the Chicago Cubs. He traveled to Germany twice. Richard spent many hours planting roses and tending their blooms. He also constructed a fish pond at his home in Middle Amana. For the last ten years, he spent the winters in Texas. During these winters, he was a bell ringer for the Salvation Army, a member of the Hot Pepper Organization and volunteered during the hockey and basketball games at the Arena in Texas. Richard was a member of the Amana Church and the Young Mans Bureau.

Matthew Keith “Sarge” Merritt, age 82, of Marengo, IA, formerly of Waco, TX, died Monday, September 1, 2008 at Rose Haven Nursing Home, Marengo following an extended illness. Funeral Services: 11:00 A.M. Friday, September 5, 2008, First United Methodist Church, Marengo, IA with Rev. Katie Dawson officiating. Burial will be in the Marengo Cemetery with military honors conducted by Marengo American Legion Post #76. Friends may call from 4 to 7 P.M. Thursday, September 4, 2008 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo, IA.
A memorial fund has been established.
Keith is survived by his wife Marilyn, two daughters, Barb Christoffersen and husband Steve of Cedar Rapids, and Shery Merritt of Bethlehem, PA; a son Dan Merritt and wife Teresa of Jenks, OK; seven grandchildren, Brian (Lory) Christoffersen of Cedar Rapids, Tammy (Mike) Hoffman of Mason City, IA, Shery (Nick) Pryszlak of Branchburg, NJ, Matthew Christoffersen of Cedar Rapids, Joshua (Kendra) Merritt of Centennial, CO, and Travis and Kayleen Merritt of Jenks, OK; seven great-grandchildren, Cody and Callie Christoffersen, Noah, Chloe, Dinah, Silas and Tabitha Hoffman. Also surviving are his siblings, Mary Hayden of Cedar Rapids, Jim Merritt and wife Beverly of Johnston, IA and Chuck Merritt and wife Jean of Marengo. He was preceded in death by his parents, a son Steven Keith Merritt, and a brother Ronald Merritt.
Matthew Keith Merritt was born September 28, 1925 in Williamsburg, Iowa, the son of Benjamin Burr Merritt and Florence Mae Hawkins Merritt. He received his education in the Iowa Valley schools, graduating from Iowa Valley High School in 1945. Following graduation, Keith was employed at Iowa Steel in Cedar Rapids. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1948 until 1970, stationed at Spokane, Washington, Yakota, Japan, Clark AFB in the Phillipines and several other bases in the U.S. He married Marilyn Huber on July 12, 1951 in Solon, Iowa. Following his retirement from the Air Force, Keith was employed by the Iowa Valley Schools in Marengo, then at Solar Homes of Marengo, retiring in 1977. The couple then moved to Waco, TX. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Marengo, the American Legion Post #76 for over 59 years, and was treasurer of Air Force Sergeants. He enjoyed camping and fishing. He especially enjoyed coaching Little League Baseball during his years in the Air Force. Keith was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan.

Vivian G. Shaull Holst, age 96 of Marengo, died Sunday, August 31, 2008 at Rose Haven Nursing Home following an extended illness. Funeral Services: 10:30 A.M. Wednesday, September 3, 2008, First United Methodist Church, Marengo with Rev. Katie Dawson officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Belle Plaine. Friends may call from 4 to 7 P.M. Tuesday, September 2, 2008 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. A memorial fund has been established.
She is survived by her son Ronald Shaull and wife Rosalie of Marengo, three daughters, Pat Hagen and husband Kenneth of Homestead, Charlotte Iberg and husband Ronald of Austin, TX and Jeroldine Soar of Council Bluffs, Iowa; ten grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, two brothers, Roderick and Charles Moore, four sisters, Marguerite Beasmore, Lavona Pasler, Lucille Blomme and Frances Tehan, a son-in-law, Harold Soar and a grandson Brett Hagen.
Vivian Grace Moore was born March 17, 1912 in Parnell, Iowa, the daughter of Charles and Maude Claypool Moore. She received her education in the North English schools and married Merritt Shaull on July 1, 1928 in Marengo. He died November 23, 1957. Vivian married Harry Holst on November 14, 1958 in Marengo. He died April 1, 1988. Vivian was employed at Amana Refrigeration for many years. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Marengo, and the United Methodist Women. She enjoyed gardening, crocheting, needlework and making afghans.

Elvin Russell Heller, age 89, of Pinewood, MN, formerly of Ladora, IA died Friday, August 8, 2008 at North Country Regional Hospital in Bemidji, MN of an abdominal aortic aneurysm. Funeral services: 10:00 A.M. Thursday, August 14, 2008, Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo, Iowa with Rv. Mike Townsley officiating. Burial will be in the Kosta Cemetery, rural Marengo, IA with military honors. Friends may call from 5 to 8 P.M. Wednesday, August 13, 2008 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be contributed to the Clover Ridge United Methodist Church Flood Relief Mission.
Survivor include his wife, Nancy L. of Pinewood, MN; two children and their spouses Rick and Ramona of Marengo, IA and Rusty and Martha of Pinewood, MN; four grandchildren and their spouses: Richard A. and fiancée Erin of Cedar Rapids, IA; Steven E.L. and Laura of Ralston, NE; Jon R. of Pinewood, MN; and Jessica L. and Samuel Wike of Bemidji, MN. and two great-grandchildren, Alexander and Elliott Heller of Omaha. Also surviving are three brothers and their spouses Wesley and Marietta Heller of Marengo, IA; George and Vava Heller of Marengo, IA and Frank and Zelma Heller of Lostine, Ore. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lloyd and Emma, two sisters Mary and Alice and two brothers Lloyd Jr. and Ernest.
Elvin was born to Lloyd Wright and Emma Dusil Heller on the Heller Farm in Honeycreek Township, Iowa County, Iowa on April 7, 1919. He received his education in the Honeycreek #11 School, Iowa County, Iowa. He married Nancy Lee Daniels on October 15, 1949 in Bemidji, MN. The couple had two sons, Richard and Russell. Elvin served in the U.S. Navy from 1945 to 1946 during World War II. Following his discharge from the Navy, he returned to Marengo, IA. where he was employed by Jim Furnlong’s Radiator. He then moved to Bena, MN to work at Judd’s Resort until 1971. He moved for a short time to Riverton, WY then returned to the Bemidji area where he owned and operated Elpine Village Trailer Court. He retired in 1992 to Pinewood, MN where he loved to hunt, fish, garden and make wine.

Aileen V. Meade, age 75 of Parnell, died Tuesday, August 12, 2008 at her home following an extended illness. Mass of Christian Burial: 10:00 A.M. Saturday, August 16, 2008, St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Williamsburg, IA with Fr. Bob Harness and Fr. Joe Roost officiating. Burial will be in St. Michael’s Cemetery, Holbrook, IA. Friends may call from 4 to 8 P.M. Friday, August 15, 2008 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Williamsburg where there will be a Scripture Service at 3:45 P.M. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be contributed to Camp Courageous, Monticello, IA.
Aileen is survived by her husband, Wayne Meade; her children Pat Meade and wife Mary Jane of Dyersville, Shelley Bishop and husband Phil of Center Point, Denny Meade of Parnell, Tim Meade and fiancée Kathy Wagamon of Parnell, John Meade and wife Carol of Newhall, Steve Meade and wife Carman of Olathe, KS, Matt Meade of Lee’s Summit, MO and Joe Meade and wife Carrie of Parnell; 21 grandchildren; and two brothers, Bill Burke and wife Ginger of Coggon and Glenn Burke and wife Kay of Ryan. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Walt and Don Burke, a sister Mary Hamling, and a daughter Susan in infancy.
Aileen Veronica Burke was born May 31, 1933 in Ryan, Iowa, the daughter of Joseph Henry Burke and Susan Veronica Coleman Burke. She received her education in the Troy Mills and Walker schools, graduating from Walker High School in 1951. Aileen married Mathias Wayne Meade on June 4, 1955 in Walker. She was a homemaker and loving mother. She was a previous member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Holbrook and the Altar and Rosary Society. Most recently, Aileen was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Parnell and St. Joseph’s Altar and Rosary Society. She enjoyed crocheting and quilting, playing Bingo and traveling. Aileen was an avid reader and a devout Iowa Hawkeyes fan. But most of all, she cherished her time with family and friends.

Helen N. Sietsema, age 95, of Marengo, died Saturday August 16, 2008 at the Marengo Memorial Hospital, Marengo, Iowa of complications from a stroke. Funeral Services will be at 10:30 A.M. Tuesday, August 19, 2008, at Trinity United Church of Christ, rural Marengo with Rev. Bev Thompson-Travis officiating. Friends may call after 9:00 A.M. Tuesday at the church. Burial will be at 1:30 P.M. Wednesday, August 20, 2008 at the Tabor Cemetery, Tabor, IA. A memorial fund has been established.
She is survived by a son, Richard T. Sietsema and wife Margie of Byron, GA; and four daughters, Betty Clouse of Gainesville, FL, Audrey Loffer and husband Robert of Marengo, Kathleen Witzel and husband Leo of Brainard, NE and Karen Heitmann and husband David of Victor; 23 grandchildren, Vicki, Greg, Kimberly, Cheryl, Carrie, Kristine, Michelle, Mark, Matthew, Michael, Melanie, Merissa, Anthony, Charity, Christopher, Derek, Leslee, Shambria, Kyla, Nyla, Rachel, Sean and Damen, numerous great-grandchildren, a great great granddaughter, a sister, Letitia Lawson age 112, of Milford, IA and a brother-in-law, Hrold Sietsema and wife Marilyn of Minnesota.. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Glade Sietsema and 4 sisters and 2 brothers.
Beulah Helen Northey was born April 16, 1913 on the family farm, near Milford, Iowa. She was the youngest of eight children born to Albert J. and Carrie Thompson Northey. Helen attended Okaboji Consolidated School and graduated in 1930. At an early age she joined the Excelsior Methodist Church where she took part in Sunday School, Youth Group, Bible School and other church activities. On December 28, 1936, she married Glade Wesley Sietsema in Milford, Iowa. The couple made their first home on a farm near Lake Park, IA. Five children came to live in this home, Richard, Betty, Audrey, Kathleen and Karen. Following a short time of farming, Glade decided to become a minister. Through the years, they served churches in South Dakota, Iowa and Wisconsin. Glade died in 1961 while he was pastor of the Congregational United Church of Christ in Tabor, Iowa.
Helen loved caring for her home and family. She enjoyed gardening and always had lots of vegetables and flowers. She was a member of the Tabor Congregational United Church of Christ, where she worked with the Sunday School and the Women’s Fellowship as long as she was able. She was a 50-year member and past matron of the Order of Eastern Star.
In 2001, Helen moved to Marengo to be closer to family. In spite of health issues and arthritis, she continued to enjoy crocheting, and took great pride in the sweaters that she contributed to Guidepost Knit for Kids mission project. Helen had a deep and abiding faith in God which sustained her throughout her life. She enjoyed attending services at Trinity UCC when she was able and came to love and appreciate her Trinity family. Helen loved flowers and birds and taught her family to appreciate nature. She was a blessing to all who knew her and will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
