Joyce Lavonne Hiner Peska, age 55, formerly of Brooklyn, died Monday, July 27, 2009 at her home in Flower Mound, TX. Mass of Christian Burial: 1:00 P.M. Saturday, August 1, 2009, St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Brooklyn with Fr. Brian Shepley officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Brooklyn. Visitation: 5 to 7:30 P.M. Friday, August 31, 2009 at Kloster Funeral Home, Brooklyn where there will be a Scripture Service at 7:30 P.M.
She is survived by her husband, Larry A. Peska of Flower Mound, TX; two children, Jennifer L. Peska of Flower Mound and Justin L. Peska of Lewisville, TX; her parents, Harold and Pauline Hiner and a brother George and wife Lori Hiner, all of Brooklyn.
Joyce Lavonne Hiner was born July 24, 1954 in Grinnell, Iowa, the daughter of Harold and Pauline Yossi Hiner. She attended the Brooklyn schools and graduated from BGM High School in 1972. Joyce attended Marshalltown Community College for a year. She married Larry A. Peska on July 10, 1976 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Brooklyn. Besides being a wife, mother and homemaker, Joyce was employed as an accountant at GTE in Grinnell for 13 years. She was a member St. Phillip the Apostle Catholic Church in Lewisville, TX, and a past member of the Women’s Business Association. Joyce enjoyed cooking, landscaping and gardening, especially herb gardening.

Fern Wichmann Oehl, age 77, of Amana, died peacefully at her home surrounded by her family on Tuesday evening, July 28, 2009. Funeral Services: 10:30 A.M. Friday, July 31, 2009, St. John’s Lutheran Church, rural Homestead with Rev. Wayne Woolery officiating. Burial will be in St. John’s Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 7 P.M. Thursday, July 30, 2009 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in rural Homestead. Memorials may be contributed to St. John’s Lutheran Church. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo is in charge of arrangements.
Fern M. Wichmann was born August 23, 1931 in Amana, the daughter of Adolph, Sr. and Anna Koester Wichmann. She married Carl A. Oehl on September 12, 1953 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Homestead. Fern was a homemaker, and she and her husband owned and operated the Colony Market Place in South Amana for over 25 years, along with their Colony Kitchen Foods business. She loved her flowers and gardening and is well remembered for her family meals and angel food cakes.
Fern is survived by her husband of 54 years, Carl; a daughter Carla and a son Scott and his special friend Sue, a grandson Travis and wife Laura Kay Sheely, and a great-grandson Dylan Sheely, all of Amana; three brothers, Raymond and wife Eleanor of Williamsburg, Adolph, Jr. and wife Regina, and Earl and wife Marilyn all of Homestead; and two sisters, Dorothy Folkmann and husband Loren of Williamsburg and Ethel Wichmann of Osage. Also surviving are a sister-in-law Eleanor Wichmann, a brother-in-law, Raymond Oehl and a sister-in-law Emily Oehl, all of Amana, along with many nieces and nephews. Fern was preceded in death by her parents, a brother Clarence, and a sister Roma in infancy.

Harriet L. Rathjen, age 97, of Marengo, died Monday, July 27, 2009 at Rose Haven Nursing Home, Marengo, following an extended illness. Funeral Services: 10:30 A.M. Thursday, July 30, 2009, First Presbyterian Church, Marengo with Rev. David Mosher officiating. Burial will be in Genoa Bluff Cemetery, rural Ladora. Friends may call from 4 to 7 P.M. Wednesday, July 29, 2009 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established.
Harriet is survived by her son, Charles and wife Marion Rathjen of Marengo; two daughters, Janet Bradley and husband Ed of Newhall, IA and Joyce Fleischacker and husband Frank of Marshfield, MO; eight grandchildren, Vicki Drown, (David) of Cedar Rapids, Connie Kimball (Dan) of Palm Harbor, FL, Mary Schall (Ken) of Robins, John Rathjen (Renee) of Williamsburg, Dan Bradley (friend Barb Gaffney) of Woodbury, MN, Dave Bradley (Debbie) of Indianapolis, IN, Mike Fleischacker of Cedar Rapids and Stephanie Gensheimer (Todd) of Ann Arbor, MI; and 12 great-grandchildren, Erica and Alicia Drown, Danielle Kimball, Amanda and Garrett Shannon, Megan and Elise Rathjen, Katie and Mike Bradley, Darrian Fleischacker, and Emili and Ryan Gensheimer. Also surviving are a sister-in-law, Charlotte Goss of Rockledge, FL and special nieces, nephews and their spouses. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Kenny in 1992, four brothers, Kenneth Goss, John Goss and two in infancy, and two sisters, Margaret Janss and Adah Neuzil.
Harriet Lucille Goss was born May 18, 1912 in Blairstown, Iowa, the daughter of George W. and Minnie Shuck Goss. She graduated from Blairstown High School on May 24, 1929 and the Business College in Jackson, Michigan in 1930. Harriet married Kenneth M. Rathjen on December 24, 1932 in Aurora, IL. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Marengo for over 50 years, the Marengo Garden Club, the First Presbyterian Quilters, and the First Presbyterian Women’s Association. She enjoyed quilting and helped with over 200 quilts at the church. She also enjoyed tending to her flowers.

John Edward Waterbeck, age 83 of Grinnell, formerly of Hartwick, died Friday, September 25, 2009 at St. Francis Manor in Grinnell following an extended illness. Funeral Services: 10:30 A.M. Tuesday, September 29, 2009 at Grace United Methodist Church, Brooklyn with Rev. John Dodds officiating. Burial will be in Brooklyn Memorial Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 P.M. Monday, September 28, 2009 at Kloster Funeral Home, Brooklyn. Memorials may be contributed to Grace United Methodist Church, Brooklyn.
He is survived by his wife Isabel of Grinnell, two sons, Gary J. Waterbeck (Donna) of Shellsburg and Terry L. Waterbeck (Judy) of Maple Grove, MN; two daughters, Susan Kay Locke (Jeff) of Urbandale, and Joy Cummings (Marty) of Malcom; five grandchildren, Angela Ruley (Darold) of Springville, Jennifer Melgaard (Tom) of Surprise, AZ, Nicholas Waterbeck of Phoenix, AZ, Dustin Cummings (Katie) of Malcom and Courtney Cummings of Malcom; five great grandchildren, Logan, Brenton, Dalton, and Austin Ruley, and Cadence Cummings. Also surviving are a brother Walter Waterbeck of Coggon and a sister Fran Snyder of Cedar Rapids. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Leonard and a sister Elsie Vajgrt.
John Edward Waterbeck was born February 13, 1926 in Poweshiek County, Iowa, the son of Frank and Maggie Eirp Waterbeck. He graduated from Hartwick High School in 1944 and married Isabel Mae Keller on May 21, 1950 at Grace United Methodist Church, Brooklyn. He farmed in the Hartwick area for many years. John was a member of the Hartwick Fire Department for 18 years, Grace United Methodist Church, the ZCBJ Lodge, the Poweshiek County Extension Board and was on the school board Advisory Committee. He also served as a 4-H leader. He spent his free time woodworking, fishing and watching ball games. John enjoyed traveling, especially bus tours with Isabel, and listening to polka music. He treasured the time he spent with his family and attended many of the grandchildren’s events.

Helen M. Young, age 84 of Amana, formerly of South Amana, died Tuesday evening, September 22, 2009 at Colonial Manor of Amana following an extended illness. Funeral Services: 10:00 A.M. Saturday, September 26, 2009, Middle Amana Community Church, Middle Amana, Iowa with Elder Harold Pitz officiating. Burial will be in the South Amana Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 6 P.M. Friday, September 25, 2009 at the Middle Amana Community Church. Memorials may be contributed to the American Cancer Society. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo is in charge of arrangements.
She is survived by her husband William of Amana; three sons, Clyde of High Amana, David and wife Patricia of Joice, and Laverne of South Amana, and two grandchildren Robert Young of Cedar Rapids and Kurtis Young of Chicago, IL. She was preceded in death by her parents.
Helen Marie Dietrich was born July 22, 1925 in Amana, Iowa the only daughter of Henry and Marie Franke Dietrich. She graduated from the Amana High School in 1944. Helen was employed at the Amana Woolen Mill prior to her marriage to William Young on May 3, 1947 in Cedar Rapids. The couple resided in South Amana for 51 years. Besides being a homemaker, Helen was a longtime volunteer for the American Cancer Society and a past board member of the Iowa County unit of the American Cancer Society. She was a member of the Amana Heritage Society and a lifelong member of the Amana Church Society. Helen enjoyed gardening, reading and spending time with her family.

Archie Roy Bair, age 80 of Brooklyn, died Monday, September 21, 2009 at the Grinnell Regional Medical Center following a brief illness. Funeral Service: 10:30 A.M. Friday, September 25, 2009, Kloster Funeral Home, Brooklyn with Fr. Brian Shepley officiating.Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Brooklyn, IA. Visitation: 4 to 7 P.M. Thursday, September 24, 2009 at the funeral home. A memorial fund has been established.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley; two daughters, Deb Morton (Jim) of Victor and LeeAnn Current (Jerry) of New Sharon; a son David (Maria) of San Antonio, TX; 8 grandchildren, Amy Blankenship of Victor, Loren Morton of Zearing, John Urfer of Mount Pleasant, Robert Stanek also of Mt. Pleasant, Kristina Raney of New Sharon, and Darcy, Wendy and Cindy Bair, all of San Antonio, TX.; and 5 great-grandchildren, Shawn Blankenship, Justine, R.J., Rhianna, and Jacob Raney. He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter Barbara Jean in infancy, two sisters, Naomi Bair and Katherine Avard and a brother Edward Bair.
Archie Roy Bair was born November 28, 1928 in Ladora, Iowa, the son of Roy Everett and Anna Marie Leitzman Bair. He attended Victor High School and married Shirley Wilcox on February 19, 1955 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Brooklyn. Archie served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He was employed as a farm hand on area farms and also worked at KSKB Radio Station. Archie enjoyed playing cards, bingo, long walks and reading. He was a Hawkeye and Nascar fan. He was a hard worker and loved his farm animals. He especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Woodrow William “Woody” Boyd, age 90, died Thursday, September 17, 2009 at the Grinnell Regional Medical Center, Grinnell, IA, following a brief illness. Funeral Services: 10:30 A.M. Saturday, September 19, 2009, at the First Presbyterian Church, Brooklyn with Rev. John Reynolds officiating. Burial will be in the Jackson County Township Cemetery, Montezuma with military honors conducted by Francis-Gallagher Post #294. Friends may call after 9:30 A.M. until service time at the church on Saturday. Memorials may be contributed to the First Presbyterian Church Handicap Accessibility Fund.
He is survived by three daughters, Linda Mullen (Brad) of Guernsey, Bev Boyd of Urbandale, and Shirley Messamer (Ron) of Adel; six grandchildren, Tina Saland (Cory) of Brooklyn, Bradford Mullen of Brooklyn, Adam Mullen of Guernsey, Teresa Gale of Waukee, Randall Messamer (Monica) of Perry and Daniel Messamer of Puyallup, WA; and ten great grandchildren, Jon Mullen, Jesse Saland, Hanna Saland, Devin and Derik Gale, Allison, Stephanie, and Alex Messamer and Elaina and Jesse Messamer. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Ina Mae, two brothers, Warren and John and a sister Evelyn Chrissinger.
Woodrow William Boyd was born June 29, 1919 in Ewart, Iowa, the son of John and Eliza Smith Boyd. He received his education in the Poweshiek County schools and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Woody married Ina Mae Johnson in Montezuma on February 24, 1941. He was employed as a truck driver for the Poweshiek County Roads Department for many years. He also worked as an auto mechanic in Deep River and for Dyer’s Ford in Brooklyn. Woody was an avid fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Chicago Cubs. He loved homemade cookies, playing cards, bingo and word searches. He also enjoyed his daily drives around the area. Woody was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Brooklyn.

Janice Kay Korns was born August 2, 1960 in Rapid City, South Dakota at Ellsworth Air Force Base. She died Monday, September 14, 2009 at the Brooklyn Community Estates in Brooklyn, Iowa. She was the daughter of Doris A. Bunn and the late William Franklin Korns. A memorial fund has been established.
Janice received her education in Brooklyn, Iowa and graduated from the BGM Schools. She worked for many years at Jim and Mary’s. Her last employment was with BGM schools as a one-on-one aide in the high school.
Janice enjoyed being with children, cooking, playing cards and games on the computer, and she was an avid reader.
Janice was an awesome mom and aunt to many. Her most precious love and devotion went to her daughter Brettney Michelle Korns.
She is survived by her daughter Brettney; her two moms: Doris A. Bunn and Janet L. Korns both of Brooklyn; two sisters: Sherry Korns-Johnson (Steve) of Brooklyn and Angie Bayer (Joel) of Victor; two brothers: Charlie Korns of Brooklyn and Dan Bunn (Whitney) of Marengo; one step-sister Darla Ingersoll (Tim); two step-brothers: Mark Rhinehart (Kayleen) and Steven Rhinehart (Jennifer) all of Brooklyn; and nieces and nephews: Blain, Calvin, Amanda, Will, Owen, Ben, Brandi, Travis, Cody, Nick, Isaac, Gianna, Teagan, and Jayden.
Janice was preceded in death by her father Bill Korns, her step-father John Bunn, and her niece Jenny Korns.
Memorial Services will be held at 7 P.M. Thursday, September 17, 2009 at the Presbyterian Church in Brooklyn, Iowa.

Frances Marie Wylie was born in Ringling, Oklahoma on August 5, 1922. Frances attended the University of Oklahoma at Norman. During World War II she was an instructor in Amarillo, Texas. There she met her future husband, Ross E. Wylie, who was a pilot during the war. Frances and Ross were married on March 17, 1945 in Denver, Colorado where he was stationed. After living a short time in Texas, they eventually made their home in Brooklyn, Iowa. They farmed and Frances worked at Grinnell Re Insurance and the Rural Electric Company for many years.
Frances was a force of nature - full of humor and resolve. Family and friends were her primary focus. She was a bridge player, a golfer, a traveler, and a shopper who loved music and plays, entertaining friends, and was committed to her church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ross E. Wylie, her mother Bernice Harper, her father Joe L. Harper Sr. and her brother Joe L. Harper Jr.
She is survived by her son Randy Wylie and daughter-in-law Betsy of Whitney, Texas, her daughter Susan Wylie Schoon and son-in-law Craig of Washington Depot, Connecticut, and her two beloved grandchildren, Sara Schoon of Saratoga Springs, New York and Nathan Wylie of Austin, Texas.
Frances passed away on Saturday August 29, 2009 at Candlewood Valley Health and Rehabilitation Center in New Milford, Connecticut. She lived most of her joyful life in Brooklyn, Iowa. Memorial Services: 10:00 A.M. Saturday, September 26, 2009, Madison Church of Christ, rural Brooklyn, Iowa with Dennis Smith and Rev. John Reynolds, Jr. officiating. Inurnment will be in the Brooklyn Memorial Cemetery. Visitation: 4 to 7 P.M. Friday, September 25, 2009 at Kloster Funeral Home, Brooklyn, Iowa.
Memorials may be contributed to the Nebraska Children’s Home Society, 4939 South 118th, Omaha, NE 68137-9976 or the Evan B. Donaldson Adoption Institute, 525 Broadway 6th Floor, New York City, NY 10012.
