Delbert Lee Peska, age 70 of Marengo, died Saturday, September 5, 2009 at the Marengo Memorial Hospital, following an extended illness. Mass of Christian Burial: 10:30 A.M. Wednesday, September 9, 2009, St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Marengo with Fr. Joseph Roost officiating. Burial will be in the Marengo Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 P.M. Tuesday, September 8, 2009, at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. A Rosary will be recited at 4:30 P.M. and there will be a Scripture Service at 7:30 P.M. A memorial fund has been established.
Delbert is survived by his wife Cynthia; two sons, Mike and wife Robin, and Mark and wife Dawn, all of Marengo; four grandchildren, April Peska Balk, Brandon Peska, Senior Airman Marcus Peska and Chad Peska (Brooke); and a great-grandson, Layne Peska. Also surviving are two brothers, Dale (Evelyn) of Marengo and Duane (Carol) of Ladora. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother David and three grandchildren, Christopher, Jillian and Justine Peska.
Delbert Lee Peska was born November 5, 1938 in Chelsea, Iowa, the son of Albert and Hazel See Peska. He received his education in the Hartwick schools and married Cynthia A. Albert on November 8, 1958 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Marengo. Delbert was employed as a truck driver with Wilder Grain of Hartwick for several years. He subsequently was employed as a machine metal specialist with Amana Refrigeration for 34 years, retiring in 2001. He was a member of the Local Machinists Union #1526.

Mary Ellen "Nell" Simmons, age 105, of Williamsburg, Iowa died Monday, August 31, 2009, at Rose Haven Nursing Home in Marengo, Iowa from complications of age. Mass of Christian Burial: 10:30 A.M. Friday September 4, 2009 at Saint Mary's Catholic Church, Williamsburg, Iowa with Father Joseph Roost officiating. Burial will be in Saint Mary's Cemetery, Williamsburg, Iowa. Friends may call from 4 to 7 P.M. Thursday, September 3, 2009 at Saint Mary's Hall in Williamsburg, Iowa where there will be a Scripture Service at 7 P.M. Memorials may be contributed to Saint Mary's Catholic Church, Williamsburg, Iowa or Safe Haven of Iowa County. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo, Iowa is in charge of arrangements.
Nell is survived by nine nieces and nephews who loved her dearly. She was preceded in death by her husband, Eldon Simmons; her parents, Mary Ellen (Kilroy) and Michael F. Naughton; and her seven brothers and sisters: M. Clarence Naughton, Margaret Glanz, J. Walter Naughton, J. Paul Naughton, Rita Driscoll, James F. Naughton and John L. Naughton.
Mary Ellen "Nell" Simmons was born June 17, 1904 on her family farm located between Williamsburg and Parnell, Iowa, the daughter of Michael and Mary Ellen Kilroy Naughton. She graduated from Parnell Consolidated School in 1924 and was proud to have won a top spelling and penmanship award that served her well throughout her long life as she was a prolific letter writer. Nell helped her parents at home raising their large family and provided financial support to the household with housekeeping jobs in Iowa City, Iowa. She married Eldon Simmons at Saint Mary's Catholic Church, Williamsburg, Iowa. In 1934 she went to work for Durr Grocery Store in Williamsburg, Iowa, and in 1936 was hired by Oren Pete Peterson owner of Peterson Drug in Williamsburg, Iowa. She had aspirations of becoming a pharmacist, and worked for Mr. Peterson and later his son-in-law, John Engel, for 47 years; retiring in 1983. Nell was proud to have put up over 100 prescriptions in one day, and was a long-time caregiver and friend to many in the Williamsburg community. She was honored as one of the Senior Grand Marshals at Williamsburg's Sesquicentennial Celebration in 2007.
Nell and her husband Eldie loved the Rocky Mountains where they vacationed for many years. Although they had no children themselves, they loved to spend time with family and their many nieces and nephews. Nell will always be remembered for her quick Irish wit and sense of humor. She was a friend to all who came in contact with her, and will be missed by her family and friends.

Lloyd M. Lacy, age 89 of Vinton, formerly of Marengo, died Saturday, August 29, 2009 at Virginia Gay Hospital, Vinton, IA, following an extended illness. Private Family Services will be held at a later date. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo is in charge of arrangements.
He is survived by his wife Neoma of Vinton; two daughters, Jeannene Ann Lacy of Hiawatha and Patricia Ann Lacy of Vinton; and six grandchildren, Christene Dietz (Jerry) of Cedar Rapids, Amy Jo Lacy, Caitlin Loney, Destiny Loney, Breanna Loney and Austin Douglas all of Vinton. He is also survived by a brother Larry Lee Lacy and wife Nancy of Cedar Rapids. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother Leonard in 2005.
Lloyd M. Lacy was born November 27, 1919 in Williamsburg, Iowa, the son of Alfred C. Lacy and Alta Caroline Faas Lacy. He attended the South Pilot Township School, Iowa County and married Neoma P. Rogers on December 13, 1941 at the Ohio Methodist Church Parsonage, rural Ladora. Lloyd served in the U.S. Army from 1942 - 43, stationed in North Carolina. He was employed as a mechanic with Handler Motor in Cedar Rapids for 30 years and also worked with Potts Motor in Marengo for 4 years. Lloyd also farmed for 10 years in the Alburnett area.

Mary Charlotte Firman, age 90, passed away Saturday, December 26, 2009 at Rose Haven Nursing Home, Marengo following an extended illness. Funeral Services: 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, December 30, 2009, First United Methodist Church, Marengo with Rev. Katie Dawson officiating. Burial will be in the Colfax Cemetery, Colfax, Iowa. Visitation: 4 to 6 P.M. Tuesday, December 29, 2009 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. A memorial fund has been established.
Mary is survived by her three children, Jon (Chris) Firman of Niantic, CT, Jayne (Marvin) Machacek of Norway, IA, and Jeffrey (Cindy) Firman of Indianapolis, IN; and five grandchildren, Jon Lloyd Firman, Lindsey, Ashley, McKinsey and Courtney Firman, along with many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, Mary was preceded in death by four sisters, Martha in childhood, Iris Dwight, Enid Nelson, and Doris Stacy, two brothers, Dale in childhood and William Wilding, and an infant daughter, Judith Ann.
Mary was born July 26, 1919 in Colfax, Iowa the daughter of John and Nell Hester Wilding. She attended the Colfax schools and graduated from Newton High School in 1938. Mary was united in marriage to Lloyd Firman on November 8, 1941 in Las Vegas, NV. The couple moved to Los Angeles and later back to Iowa where they settled in Norway. Following Lloyd’s death in 1979, Mary moved to Marengo, where she resided until her death.
Mary had a beautiful singing voice, singing for many weddings and church choirs. She loved to cook, garden and prior to moving to Rose Haven, was active with HACAP and Senior Dining programs. She was an active member of the Methodist churches in both Norway and Marengo.
Mary’s family would like to thank the staff of Rose Haven and Hospice Compassus for their kindness and care shown to Mary in her final years.

Linda Ann Ellis, age 54 of Brooklyn died Friday morning, December 25, 2009 at her home following an extended illness. Funeral Services: 10:30 A.M. Tuesday, December 29, 2009, First Presbyterian Church, Brooklyn with Rev. John Reynolds officiating. Burial will be in Brooklyn Memorial Cemetery. There will be no public visitation. In lieu of flowers memorials may be contributed to the Linda Ellis Memorial Fund, 2163 440th Ave., Guernsey, IA 52221. Kloster Funeral Home, Brooklyn is in charge of arrangements.
She is survived by her children, Ryan Ellis of West Haven, Utah and Amanda Ellis of Cedar Rapids; her parents, Glen and Donna Stauffer; her siblings, Lynn Stauffer of Brooklyn, Laurie Grier (Tom) of Guernsey and Lisa Steffensmeier of Brooklyn. She was preceded in death by her grandparents.
Linda Ann Stauffer was born November 26, 1955 in Brooklyn, Iowa, the daughter of Glen and Donna Groves Stauffer. She graduated from BGM High School in 1974. She was employed by GTE/Iowa Telecom for 35 years. Linda was a lifelong resident of Brooklyn. She enjoyed working with her co-workers and friends at the many community events and gatherings. She loved her pets, traveling, and attending her children’s sporting events. Linda enjoyed coaching Silver Spirit Dance Team, going for walks, and crafting. She especially enjoyed the many family traditions. She was a member and elder of First Presbyterian Church and also a member of the Southside Circle.

Lester A. Young, age 85, died Tuesday, December 22, 2009 at Highland Ridge Care Center, Williamsburg, IA. Funeral Services: 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, December 29, 2009, Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo with Rev. David Remfer officiating. Military honors will be conducted at the funeral home, following the services. Burial will be in the Woodlawn Cemetery, Toledo. Friends may call from 4 to 7 P.M. Monday, December 28, 2009 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. A memorial fund has been established.
He is survived by his daughters, Jeanne Marie Carter of Wise, VA and Barbara Jo Barrick and husband Geoffrey of Fort Dodge; eight grandchildren: Leslie Jacobs (Shannon) of Woodbridge, VA, Lara Page (Aaron) of St. Roberts, MO, Lynn Carter (Sandra) of Robbins, Michelle Hermeier (Glenn) of Stoddard, WI, Ambri Refer of Independence, Seth Refer of Johnston, Sarah Barrick of Marengo, and Erin Barrick of Fort Dodge; and nine great-grandchildren: Tyler and Cody Maxwell, Brenna Page, Cassandra and Cody Carter, Paige Gregg, Christine and Steven Hradek, and Zach Hermeier. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Betty in 1991, two sons in infancy James and David, and a daughter Linda. His siblings also preceded him in death: Robert Nash, Raymond Nash, Tommy Young, Archie “Lyle” Meeker, John Young, William Nash and Marie Holt.
Lester Albert Young was born December 27, 1923 in Toledo, Iowa, the son of Aaron Elsworth Young and Bertha Sherman Young. He graduated from Toledo High School in 1941 and attended Clark College in Toledo. He served in the U.S. Army from 1943 -1946, stationed in France. Lester married Betty Jean Norris on July 3, 1944 in Toledo. He was employed by General Telephone Company as an installer/repairman, retiring in 1986. Lester had a wonderful sense of humor and always looked on the bright side. He was an avid fisherman, and loved the Iowa Hawkeyes. One of his proudest moments was meeting Hayden Fry in person. He was a member of the United Methodist Church and the Marengo American Legion Post 76.

Edith M. Martinson, age 90, died Monday, December 21, 2009 at Rose Haven Nursing Home, Marengo following an extended illness. Funeral Services: 10:30 A.M. Monday, December 28, 2009 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Marengo with Rev. Doug Morton officiating. Burial will be in the Marengo Cemetery. Visitation: 4-7 P.M. Sunday, December 27, 2009 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. A memorial fund has been established.
She is survived by her husband Merlyn; four daughters: Roberta Kleppe (Jim) of Cedar Rapids, Mary Blomme (Virgil) of Belle Plaine, Nancy Martinson (Milford) of Williamsburg, and Janice Gorsch of Cedar Rapids; two sons: Robert Gorsch (Sharon) of Victor and James Gorsch (Lori Sykes) of Marengo; four stepchildren: Cheryl Kirkpatrick (Ron) of Cedar Rapids, Gary Martinson (Sheryl) of Marion, Lois Hinrichs (Oswald) of Amana and Barbara Thomas (Dale) of Marion; 11 grandchildren, 11 step-grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, eight step-great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a brother, Loren Hughes of California and a sister, Marlene Gritsch (Gene) of Grinnell. She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, four brothers, two great granddaughters, and a step-granddaughter.
Edith Myrtle Hughes was born August 11, 1919 in Poweshiek County, Iowa, the daughter of Eugene and Golda Decker Hughes. She received her education in the Hartwick schools and graduated from Hartwick High School in 1937. Edith married Lloyd R. “Bud” Gorsch on November 25, 1939 in Belle Plaine. The couple later divorced. Edith married Merlyn John Martinson on August 12, 1972 in Marengo. She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Marengo. During her lifetime, Edith was employed by the Amana Bakery, worked as an aide at the nursing home, clerked at Brown’s Hardware, and waitressed at various restaurants. She enjoyed playing dominos, cross-stitching, crocheting, embroidery, and assembling jigsaw puzzles. She also loved being outside.

Lucille Ehrle, age 90 of Amana, died Saturday, December 19, 2009 at Colonial Manor of Amana. Funeral Services: 10:00 A.M. Tuesday, December 22, 2009, Middle Amana Community Church, Middle Amana, with Elder Betsy Momany officiating. Burial will be in the Amana Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 7 P.M. Monday, December 21, 2009 at the Middle Amana Community Church. A memorial fund has been established. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo is in charge of arrangements.
She is survived by four sons, Henry (Isabelle) of Cedar Rapids, Ron (Marilyn) of Cedar Rapids, Gary (Christy) of Belle Plaine and Steve (Shirley) of Marion; a daughter Nancy VonAhsen (Larry) of Cedar Rapids; fifteen grandchildren, and twenty-nine great-grandchildren, and six great-great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in 2005, a sister Amanda Williams and a step-sister Magdalene Hergert.
Lucille Rosa Puegner was born August 12, 1919 in High Amana, Iowa, the daughter of Edmund and Emma Lippman Puegner. She received her education in the Amana schools and married Carl Fred Ehrle on October 13, 1938 in Marengo, Iowa. Besides being a homemaker, Lucille was employed at the Amana Woolen Mills and also worked at Colony Inn for 18 years. She was a member of the Amana Church Society.

Harold R. Nail, age 85 of Marengo, formerly of Ladora, died Thursday, December 17, 2009 at Rose Haven Nursing Home, Marengo. Funeral Services: 10:30 A.M. Monday, December 21, 2009 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo with Rev. Jim Davis officiating. Burial will be in the Ohio Cemetery, rural Ladora. Friends may call from 4 to 7 P.M. Sunday, December 20, 2009 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. A memorial fund has been established.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Betty of Marengo; two daughters, Sandra Kruse (Terry) of Lone Tree and Lee Ann Haack (Leo) of Williamsburg; eight grandchildren and several great and great-great grandchildren. Also surviving are two sisters-in-law, Patsy Nail and Virginia Hunzelman, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, a son Larry in 2006, three brothers, Theron, Ellis and Harley Nail, and two sisters, Meryl Ranfeld and Eulah Mae Goldammer.
Harold Ray Nail was born March 6, 1924 in Barnett, MO, the son of Ira Sylvester Nail and Bessie Dyer Nail. He graduated from Ladora High School and married Betty K. Hunzelman on January 31, 1948 at her parents’ home. The couple owned and operated Nail Trucking and were involved in the agriculture business until their retirement in 1984. Harold and Betty resided on a farm south of Ladora until moving to Marengo in 2006.
Harold was a member of the Ladora Methodist Church, and held many church offices. He was a past member of the Ladora School Board, the Ladora Businessmen, the Ladora Saddle Club and the Ladora Senior Housing. He loved to watch Iowa Hawkeye basketball, attend the Iowa State Fair and especially enjoyed spending time with the grandchildren camping and fishing at their farm pond.
