Henrietta L. Schwarting, age 95, of South Amana, died Saturday, December 25, 2010 at Colonial Manor of Amana, following an extended illness. Funeral Services: 10:30 A.M. Wednesday, December 29, 2010 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Conroy with Rev. Gary Sears officiating. Burial will be in the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, Conroy. Visitation: 4 to 7 P.M. Tuesday, December 28, 2010 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. A memorial fund has been established.
Henrietta is survived by two sons, Larry Schwarting and wife Lani of South Amana, and Harvey Schwarting and wife Jeannie of Williamsburg; four grandchildren, Linda Block of Homestead, Lanette Spanier of Albany, MN, Terry Schwarting of South Amana and Craig Schwarting of Marengo; seven great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a brother George Ehrmann and wife Ruth of Amana, along with numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Paul, four brothers, Alfred, Walter, Roy, and Richard Ehrmann, a great grandson, Chase, and a great-great-grandson Bradley.
Henrietta Lena Ehrmann was born March 11, 1915 in West Amana, Iowa, the daughter of Fred and Ida Schoenfelder Ehrmann. She attended the Amana schools and married Paul Schwarting on February 10, 1938 at the Trinity Lutheran Parsonage in Conroy. Henrietta was a wife, mother and homemaker. She enjoyed gardening and crocheting. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Conroy and also the ESR Club.

Dale Dean Peska, age 75, of Marengo, died Sunday, May 16, 2010 at his home with his loving family by his side. Funeral Services: 10:30 A.M. Friday, May 21, 2010, St. John’s Lutheran Church, Marengo with Rev. Douglas Morton officiating. Burial will be in the Marengo Cemetery with military honors. Visitation: 4 to 8 P.M. Thursday, May 20, 2010 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. A memorial fund has been established.
Dale is survived by his wife Evelyn; seven children, Thomas Peska of Marengo, Bill Peska (Deb) of Delta, Steve Peska (Lisa Davis Popelka) of Marengo, Lorene Peska (Dave Miller) of Marengo, Joann Sebetka (Wayne) of Atkins, Mary Moore (Tim) of Fairfax and Scott Peska of Marengo; 13 grandchildren, Dominique Peska of California, Troy Peska of Marengo; Jesse Peska (Sandra Rogers) of Sigourney, Stephenie Peska of Marengo, Allison Peska (Brian Moffitt) of Marengo, Virginia Miller of Marengo, Dalandra Peska of Delta, Matthew, Mollie and Marcus Moore of Fairfax, Austin and Kelsey Sebetka of Atkins and Alex Peska of Marengo and a great-grandson, Jeremiah Peska of Sigourney. Also surviving are a brother Dwaine Peska (Carol) of Ladora and many other extended family members.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers David and Delbert, a grandson Jeremiah Shaull and a step-brother Don Peska.
Dale Dean Peska was born December 15, 1934 in Belle Plaine, Iowa, the son of Albert Thomas Peska and Hazel Lavonne See Peska. He was raised in rural Hartwick, Iowa and graduated from Hartwick High School in 1952. During school he enjoyed playing basketball and baseball and was selected to attend Boys State during his junior year. Dale attended electrician college in New York. He returned home and was employed at the Green Giant Factory in Shellsburg. While working there he was introduced to Evelyn Bearbower. The couple married September 5, 1959 at the Assembly of God Church in Vinton, Iowa. They settled in Chelsea with Dale employed at the lumberyard and also farming. He went to work at Amana Refrigeration in 1965 and the couple then moved to Marengo. He retired in 2002. Dale also served in the U.S. Army from 1957 - 1961, stationed in Germany.
Dale enjoyed his years at Amana. He loved gardening, fishing, reading and spending time with his grandchildren and working with his sons. Dale was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather and will be truly missed by his family and many friends.

Dale Allen Karsten, Jr., age 57, of Marengo, died at his home, Wednesday, July 6, 2011. Graveside Memorial Services: 11:00 A.M. Thursday, July 14, 2011 at the Marengo Cemetery, Marengo, Iowa, with Rev. Katie Dawson officiating. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 P.M. Wednesday, July 13, 2011 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. A memorial fund has been established.
Dale is survived by his daughters, Allison Schlabach and husband Travis of Marengo, and Cara Stoddard and husband Seth of Waverly, Nebraska; six grandchildren, Ashlea and Austin Schlabach of Marengo, and Noah, Owen, Aiden and Asher Stoddard of Waverly, Nebraska; and his mother Mary Karsten of Marengo. Also surviving are his siblings, David “Nate” Karsten of Marengo, Denny Karsten (Holly) of Blairstown and Deanne Kinzenbaw (Doug) of Marengo. He was preceded in death by his father and grandparents.
Dale Allen Karsten, Jr. was born February 23, 1954 in Iowa City, Iowa, the son of Dale Karsten, Sr. and Mary Ellen Walter Karsten. He graduated from Iowa Valley High School with the class of 1972. During his working career, Dale had been employed as a sales representative for various food manufacturing companies. He enjoyed golfing in his leisure time.

Ruth Marie Schmieder, well known local artist, died Monday, July 4, 2011, in her beloved Middle Amana, Iowa at the age of 89. Visitation will be at the Middle Amana Church on Friday, July 8, from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm. Funeral Services will be on Saturday, July 9, at 10:00 am at the church with Elder Emilie Hoppe officiating. Burial will follow at the Middle Amana Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Amana Church Society, Amana Heritage Society or Amana Arts Guild. Arrangements are with Kloster Funeral Home in Marengo.
Ruth was born May 26th, 1922, in Middle Amana to Dr. Christian and Johanna Jeck Herrmann. She grew up in Middle, graduating from Amana High School In 1939 and attended the University of Iowa for two years. On April 24, 1944, she was united in marriage with Adolph C Schmieder in Roswell, New Mexico where Adolph served in the Army Air Corps. When Adolph was discharged from the service after World War II, the couple returned to the Amanas where they lived and raised their family. After Adolph retired they spent winters in their condo overlooking Tampa Bay, FL returning every spring to the family home in Middle.
In the early 1960’s Ruth and some friends decided to take an art class at the YWCA in Cedar Rapids. There Ruth discovered her passion and talent for painting. Working mainly in oils and acrylics, she painted the scenes she knew and loved best, the Amanas and the rural Iowa countryside. Later in her career she switched to painting miniatures. She especially enjoyed painting beautiful blooming flowers from local gardens.
Ruth loved Amana, the Church, and little children who she taught faithfully for 22 years in her Sunday school class. She and Adolph enjoyed playing bridge and she attained the status of Life Master. She was talented as a seamstress and quilter but most of all she enjoyed knitting. She and other Amana ladies knit and then sold ski hats and toe socks to a skiing store in Aspen, Colorado for many years. Later, as a volunteer, she knit countless sets of caps and booties for the newborn babies at Mercy Medical Center. She and Adolph were avid Hawkeye fans attending games as season ticket holders for over 50 years. She was a faithful follower of the Cubbies, Da Bulls, (especially Michael Jordan and B.J. Armstrong) and Tiger Woods.
Most of all Ruth loved her family. She is survived by her daughter Terry and husband Jim Roemig of Amana, her son Eric Schmieder of Albuquerque, four grandchildren, Jason Gauna and wife Lynette of Albuquerque, Karlos Schmieder of Oakland, CA, Sarah Roemig and husband Scott of Excelsior, MN and Rebecca Selzer and husband Neil of Verona, WI. Also surviving are six much loved great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband, Adolph in 2002, her parents, her brother, Roy Herrmann, and a daughter-in-law Jeanne Gauna.

James Wesley Conrad, age 73, of High Amana, IA, formerly of Wayland, IA, died Wednesday June 29, 2011, at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids, IA. Funeral Services will be at 10:30 AM Saturday July 2, 2011 at Sugar Creek Mennonite Church in rural Wayland, IA with Pastor Richard Swartzendruber and Pastor Nathan Luitjens officiating. Burial will follow at Sugar Creek Mennonite Church Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 PM Friday July 1, 2011 at the church. A memorial fund has been established. Kloster Funeral Home in Marengo is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include his two sons: Michael (Colleen) of Marengo; Ronald (Christina) of Wayland; and daughter Amy Yoder (Brad) of High Amana; five grandchildren: Jory, Daniel, and Brinley Conrad; Gracie and Simon Yoder; and brother Willard Conrad (Hettie) of Hesston, KS.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Shirley in 2009, brother Edwin, and sister Ruth Liechty.
James Wesley Conrad was born September 10, 1937, in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, the son of Daniel and Luetta Kaufman Conrad. He graduated from Wayland High School in 1956. He served in 1-W for a year in Denver, Colorado. He married Shirley Ilene Gingerich on November 14, 1959 at Lower Deer Creek Mennonite Church, Kalona, Iowa. James was a farmer and also was employed by Farmers Implement in Washington, Iowa in the parts department and then was a truck driver for Agri-Way Feeds of Wayland, Iowa.
He loved John Deere tractors, playing with his grandchildren, and spending time outdoors and walking around his farm. He also enjoyed music especially Johnny Cash. He was a lifetime member of Sugar Creek Church and most recently attended Lower Deer Creek Mennonite Church.

Dorothy Marz, age 92 of Amana, died peacefully of natural causes on Friday morning, June 17, 2011 at Colonial Manor of Amana. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, June 20, at the Middle Amana Community Church followed by graveside services in South Amana, with Elder Kristie Yoder officiating. Visitation is Sunday, June 19, from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Middle Amana Community Church. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo, is in charge of arrangements.
Dorothy Berger was born February 26, 1919, in South Amana, the daughter of Herman Berger and Mary (Setzer) Berger. Dorothy attended the Amana schools. Following graduation, she was employed by various Amana businesses. She married Louis Marz on November 12, 1949. The couple later divorced.
Residing many happy years in Homestead, Dorothy was the consummate homemaker. She took delight in her family and enjoyed baking, embroidery, quilting, and gardening both vegetables and flowers. Dorothy displayed her faithfulness to God through stewardship to all living things and always welcomed people with a smile on her face and a sparkle in her eye. She was a member of the Amana Church Society, Homestead Welfare Club, and the Amana Heritage Society.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, Frederick, Daniel and Adolph Berger and two sisters Christine Engelhaupt and Emilie Berger.
She is survived by her daughter, Mary (Tom) Burgher of Amana and son, Dr. Mark (Marti) Marz of Cedar Rapids; four grandchildren, Laura (Keith) Simmonds, Andrew Marz, Liesl and Fritz Burgher; two great-grandchildren, Daniel and Anna Simmonds; and sisters Helen Hertel of Middle and Emma Johnson of Norwalk, California.
Memorials may be contributed to the Amana Church Society or the Amana Heritage Society.

Richard L. Fuller, age 49 of Victor, died Friday, June 10, 2011 at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids. Graveside Services: 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, June 14, 2011, Genoa Bluff Cemetery, rural Ladora with Rev. Katie Z. Dawson officiating. Friends may call from 4 to 7 P.M. Monday, June 13, 2011 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. A memorial fund has been established.
Richard is survived by his mother Mildred of Marengo, and many cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Harley L. Fuller, and an infant sister Linda Kay.
Richard Laverne Fuller was born November 3, 1961 in Marengo, Iowa, the son of Harley L. and Mildred Conrad Fuller. He was raised in the Ladora area, and graduated from HLV High School in 1980. Richard was employed for 32 years as a clerk at Big G Foods in Marengo. He was an avid NASCAR fan and especially liked to follow Dale Earnhardt, Sr.

Norma Lea Marie Vogt, age 79 of Marengo, died Tuesday, June 7, 2011 at her home following an extended illness. Funeral Mass: 10:00 A.M. Saturday, June 11, 2011 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Marengo. Burial will be in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Fairfax, Iowa. Visitation: 4 to 7 P.M. Friday, June 10, 2011 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo, with a Scripture Service at 7 P.M. A memorial fund has been established.
Norma is survived by her seven children: Steven W. Lucas (Joyce) of Vinton, Robin D. Lucas (Marlene) of Nevis, MN, Brian P. Lucas of LaCrosse, WI, Brenda M. Roshar (Ben) of Center Point, Marlene N. Lucas of Bemidji, MN, Kathleen L. Lucas Vrba (Frank) of Marengo and David S. Anthony (Lucinda) of Davenport; 17 grandchildren, Steven, Amber, Robin Jr., Rachel, Rebecca, Peggy Sue, Stacey, Brian, Renee, Kathleen, Scott, Austin, Joshua, Bridget, Robert, Aaren and Daniel; 32 great-grandchildren and her special friend Stanley Brock. Also surviving are, two sisters, Bette McLean (Jack) and Bernita Zimmerman (Nik) both of California, and her beloved dog Toby. Norma was preceded in death by her parents, a sister Marlene, two nephews, Chuck and Bill and a niece Carrie.
Norma Lea Marie Sullivan was born January 1, 1932 in Amana, Iowa, the daughter of Raymond E. and Bernice Eva Hasley Sullivan. She graduated from St. Matthias High School in Muscatine, Iowa with the class of 1948. Over the years, Norma was employed by Quaker Oats and LeFebure Manufacturing, and also was an agent for Banker’s Life and Casualty. In her free time Norma enjoyed fishing and genealogy.

Henry E. Hertel, age 91 of South Amana, died Friday, June 3, 2011 at the Marengo Memorial Hospital, Marengo, Iowa. Funeral Services: 10:00 A.M. Tuesday, June 7, 2011, Middle Amana Community Church, Middle Amana, Iowa with Elder Harold W. Pitz officiating. Burial with military honors will be in the South Amana Cemetery. Visitation: 4 to 7 P.M. Monday, June 6, 2011 at the Middle Amana Community Church. Memorials may be contributed to the El Kahir Shrine, Cedar Rapids or the Amana Church Society. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo is in charge of arrangements.
Henry is survived by his wife Helen of Colonial Manor in Middle Amana; a son Larry W. Hertel of South Amana; a daughter Lynda H. Flaherty (Brian) of South Lake, TX; two grandchildren, Kellie and B. Kyle Flaherty; and a brother Ronald Hertel of Iowa City. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother Billy.
Henry Emil Hertel was born March 27, 1920 in South Amana, Iowa, the son of William F. and Helen Shoup Hertel. He received his education in the Middle Amana School. Henry served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1945, serving in the China Burma India Theatre during World War II. He married Helen Berger on November 10, 1948 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Henry began his employment with Amana Refrigeration, working there for two years. He then worked at the Shell Station in Marengo. In 1953 he became manager and operator of the Phillips 66 Station in Homestead, retiring in 1989 after 36 years.
Henry was a member of the Amana Church Society, the Masonic Hope Lodge #175, and the El Kahir Shrine, Cedar Rapids as a member of the color guard.
