Neva L. Johnson, age 93, of Brooklyn, IA, died Tuesday, February 23, 2010 at Brooklyn Community Estate in Brooklyn. Funeral Services: 10:30 A.M. Saturday, February 27, 2010 at Grace United Methodist Church, Brooklyn with Rev. John Dodds officiating. Visitation: 5-7 P.M. Friday, February 26, 2010 at Kloster Funeral Home, Brooklyn. Burial: Brooklyn Memorial Cemetery, Brooklyn. Memorials maybe contributed to the Grace United Methodist Church.
Neva is survived by three sons: Terry Johnson of Cedar Rapids, Lyle (Lisa) Johnson of Sioux Falls, SD, and Jim (Anita) Johnson of Ames; a daughter Nancy (Roger) Roudabush of Brooklyn; eight grandchildren: Connie (Carl) Byers of Cedar Rapids, Calvin (Peggy) Roudabush of Brooklyn, Jeffrey (Michelle) Johnson of Fontana, CA, Shari (Ryan) Hokanson of Parker, CO, Tina (Brian) Claus of Omaha, NE, Julie (Roger) Raddatz of Sioux Falls, SD, Meg Johnson of Madison, WI, and Alec Johnson of Iowa City; and eight great grandchildren: Jennifer and Matthew Byers, Joshua and John Roudabush, Jacob and Jessica Claus, Jordan Raddatz, and Owen Hokanson. She is also survived by her sister Jean White VanErsvelde.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in 1991, her sister Florence Williams, her brother John White, her son Bobby in 1946, and her daughter-in-law Effa Johnson in 2009.
Neva Lucille Johnson was born January 21, 1917 in Brooklyn, IA, the daughter of Almon and Julia Tesar White. She graduated from the Brooklyn High School in 1934 and married Thomas William Johnson on November 25, 1935 in Brooklyn. She was employed as a secretary by both the Gillette Law Office and the food service department at Grinnell College for many years. Neva was a member of the Card Club, BBBs, and the Grace United Methodist Church. In her younger years she enjoyed ballroom dancing. In her free time she played cards and gardened. Spending time with her family was her greatest joy.

George W. Moline, age 82, of Brooklyn, formerly of Marengo, died Tuesday, February 23, 2010, at the Marengo Memorial Hospital following an extended illness. Per his wishes, there will be no services.
He is survived by a son David (Nancy) Moline of Washington, IL, and two grandchildren, Jake Moline and Kate Moline. Also surviving is a special friend Alberta Smith of LeMars, IA. He was preceded in death by his parents and a son Eric in December 1989.
George Wilfred Moline was born April 6, 1927 in Fort Madison, IA, the son of Wilfred and Geneva George Moline. He graduated from Fort Madison High School in 1945. He attended Bradley University and the Illinois Institute of Technology obtaining degrees as a commercial artist and mechanical engineering. George worked as a technical engineer for a variety of employers including Pullman Railway Manufacturing, Press Steel Cars, W. A. Schaeffer Pen and Co., Amana Refrigeration, Iowa County, French Reneker Engineering, the City of Newton, and Van Winkle/Jacob Consulting Engineers. George had his commercial pilot’s license and was a registered professional race car driver. He was a member of the American Society of Certified Engineering Technicians. He married Karen Morgan on May 1, 1963 in Ft. Madison, IA. The couple later divorced. George was an avid golfer and held memberships at the Williamsburg and Marengo Golf Clubs. George enjoyed woodworking, flying planes, attending football games, and watching “Law and Order”.

Shirley J. Heath, age 82 of Fairfax, formerly of Marengo, IA, died Sunday, February 21, 2010, at her home following a brief illness. Funeral Services: 10:30 A.M. Friday, February 26, 2010 at First United Methodist Church, Marengo with Rev. Katie Z. Dawson officiating. Burial will be in the Marengo Cemetery. Visitation: 4 to 7 P.M. Thursday, February 25, 2010 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. Memorials may be contributed to the First United Methodist Church, Marengo.
Shirley is survived by her loving husband of 62 years and best friend Gerald; a son David (Patty) of Wylie TX; two daughters, Cynthia Hubble (Charles) of Cedar Rapids, and Sherri Johnson (Martin) of Traer; four grandchildren, Joel Nelson, Arianne Johnson, Ashley Heath, and Brooke Johnson, and a great-grandson, Alexander Nelson. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother Richard Denzler.
Shirley Joyce Denzler was born August 28, 1927 in Marengo, Iowa, the daughter of Milford and Elta Wilson Denzler. She attended the Iowa County Schools and graduated from Marengo High School in 1945. She attended the University of Iowa, Iowa City for a year, and then was employed by Amana Refrigeration in the accounting department. Shirley married Gerald Heath on May 18, 1947 at the First United Methodist Church in Marengo. She served as a Girl Scout leader for many years. Shirley was a member of the First United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School and was a member of TTT. Later after the children were grown, Shirley worked at Rosa’s Flowers, Marengo. The couple moved to Fairfax in 2003. She will be deeply missed by her loving family and many friends.

Voda Mae Arens, age 84 of Hartwick, died Saturday, February 20, 2010 at Brooklyn Community Estates, Brooklyn, IA. Funeral Services: 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, February 23, 2010, Grace United Methodist Church, Brooklyn with Rev. John Dodds officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Tama, IA. Visitation: 5 to 8 P.M. Monday, February 22, 2010, Kloster Funeral Home, Brooklyn. A memorial fund has been established.
Voda is survived by two sons, Nathan Arens (Diane) of Hartwick and Wayne Arens (Virginia) of Brooklyn, nine grandchildren, Nicholas Arens (Amy) of Hartwick, Scott Arens of Cedar Rapids, David Arens (Breanna) of Marshalltown, Kevin Arens of Indianola, Amy Arens of Hartwick, Mike Arens of Hartwick, Jason Arens of Brooklyn, Wes Arens of Hartwick and Crystal Arens of Brooklyn; and three great grandchildren Chryton Arens, Graydon Arens of Hartwick and Kailynn Arens of Marshalltown. Also surviving is a brother Mark Croskrey (Katherine) of Tama. She was preceded in death by her parents, and her husband in 2000.
Voda Mae Croskrey was born August 30, 1925 in rural Tama County, the daughter of Harrison M. and Florence Keup Croskrey. She graduated from Tama High School in 1943, and married Julian A. Arens on February 25, 1950 at St. Patrick’s Rectory in Brooklyn. The couple farmed in Poweshiek County for many years.
Voda enjoyed crocheting, gardening, fishing, mowing the lawn, and playing Pepper and Bingo. She also enjoyed Rolle Bolle and traveling out west. Voda especially enjoyed driving the tractor on the farm. She was a member of the CWW (Community Welfare Workers) for many years.

Erma P. McMann, age 90, of Marengo, Iowa, died Friday, February 19, 2010 at Rose Haven Nursing Home in Marengo. Funeral Services: 10:30 A.M. Tuesday, February 23, 2010, Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo with Pastor Sheryll Untiedt officiating. Burial will be in the Marengo Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 7 P.M. Monday, February 22, 2010 at the funeral home. Memorials may be contributed to Safe Haven of Iowa County or Hospice Compassus.
Erma is survived by her sons, Gary (Kay) of Marengo, Garth of Cedar Rapids and Ronnie (Deb) of Marengo; four grandchildren, Sharon Carney (Mike), Marjie Krakow (Steve), Travis McMann (Zoe), all of Marengo and Tonya McMann of Ladora; nine great-grandchildren and a special friend Karen Pratt of Aledo, IL. Also surviving are several step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and two great-grandchildren, Patrick Bladen and Ashlyn Kay Carney.
Erma Pauline Bladen was born July 17, 1919 in Marengo, Iowa, the daughter of Walter M. and Ethel Dye Bladen. She attended the Oak Grove School in rural Iowa County, Iowa. Erma married Vincent McMann on August 25, 1947 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. The couple later divorced. Erma was employed for many years as a nurses’ aid at the Watts Nursing Home and later at the Marengo Memorial Hospital. She enjoyed reading and was a frequent visitor to the Marengo Library. Erma was very fond of animals. She had several pets, and also fed the occasional stray cat or dog that would appear at her door.

Adaline Valentine Zuber passed away in her dream February 15, 2010, the day after celebrating her 92nd birthday. Adaline had dreamed of a facility where aged people of Amana could find rest and peace and it became a reality in 1971 when Colonial Manor of Amana opened. Adaline was the Colonial Manor treasurer and board member for many years. She spent her last days peacefully at Colonial Manor of Amana (her home).
Mass of Christian Burial: 11:00 A.M. Saturday, February 20, 2010, St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Marengo with Fr. Joseph Roost officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Marengo. Visitation: 3 to 7 P.M. Friday, February 19, 2010, Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo, with a Scripture Service at 7:00 P.M. A memorial fund has been established.
Adaline Valentine Duda was born in Belle Plaine, Iowa on Valentine’s Day February 14, 1918 the oldest of three children born to Thomas and Elsie Kokesh Duda. She graduated from Belle Plaine High School and went on to graduate in 1941 from Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in Cedar Rapids. She worked in the Anamosa Hospital, the Woodward State Hospital and then in the Miller Hospital in Williamsburg where she spent many years. When Dr. Miller was called into World War II she spent days working and living nights at the hospital taking care of patients. She was known as “Duda” to all patients who knew her. When the Miller Hospital closed, Adaline spent her time at various jobs and volunteering. She worked at the South Amana Store and spent years as a clerk at the South Amana Post Office. She was a tour guide for the Amanas and enjoyed being with the tourists and joking with them.
Adaline spent years as a volunteer for the Iowa County Tuberculosis Christmas Seals campaign and served as president of the Iowa Tuberculosis Association. She organized the Parent Teachers Association for the Amana Schools and served as its president. She was among the original volunteers for Hospice of Iowa County. She was a Washington Township election judge for 50 years. Adaline also loved to garden. People would enjoy her short humorous quips such as her greeting of “howdy duda day” and her expression of “hanging in there” when asked how she was.
While working at the South Amana Hotel to earn money for nursing school she met Herbert Zuber. They were married on May 10, 1941 in St. Michael’s Church in Belle Plaine. They spent their married life in the home they built in South Amana.
Adaline is survived by her son Thomas (Janet) Zuber, Cedar Rapids; daughter Patricia Starbuck, Portage, Indiana; grandchildren Rebecca Zuber, Brooklyn, New York, Heather Zuber, Anaheim, California, Holly (Josh) Burkhart, Newhall, Brenda (Craig) Vanderploeg, and Chad Starbuck; great-grandchildren Jessica, Nicole, Joshua Vanderploeg, all of Fulton, Illinois and a sister Dorothy (Ray) Snitil, Cedar Rapids. Adaline was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Herbert in 1992 and a brother Leo Duda.

Alberta W. Brosnahan, age 87, died Saturday, February 13, 2010 at Brooklyn Community Estates, Brooklyn, Iowa following a brief illness. Mass of Christian Burial: 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, February 17, 2010 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Brooklyn with Fr. Brian Shepley officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Brooklyn. Visitation: 4:30 to 7 P.M. Tuesday, February 16, 2010 at Kloster Funeral Home, Brooklyn, with a rosary recited at 4:30 P.M. A memorial fund has been established.
She is survived by her children, Loretta Hanson (Stephen) of Williamsburg, Rita Brosnahan-Gerleman (Joe) of Johnston, Anita Brosnahan Johnson (Jim) of Ames, and Marty of Nevada, IA; ten grandchildren, Meg Johnson of Madison, WI, Alec Johnson of Iowa City, Breehan Gerleman-Lucchesi (Andrew) of Ames, Logan Gerleman of Grimes, Conn Hanson (Eric Minton) of New York City, Morgan Hanson (Angela) of Pittsburgh, PA, Hanorah Curry (Aaron) of Washington, D.C., Shelley Terpstra of Ames, Anna VerPloeg (Brent) of Grimes, and David Terpstra (Abby) of Bellingham, WA; five great-grandchildren, Thomas and James Hanson, and Ben, Andrew and Ethan VerPloeg. Also surviving is a son-in-law Harv Terpstra of Ames.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Martin in 1972, a daughter, Mary Rose Terpstra in 2000, and two brothers, Arnold and Kenneth Benda.
Alberta Wilhelmina Benda was born November 24, 1922 in Jefferson Township, rural Poweshiek County, Iowa, the daughter of James and Rose Posekany Benda. She graduated from Hartwick High School and married Martin Edward Brosnahan on January 7, 1947 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Chelsea. Alberta was employed as a postal clerk and was Postmaster in Brooklyn for many years. She enjoyed tending her garden, feeding the birds and squirrels and going on walks with her dog Holka. She was a longtime member of the BBB’s, the American Legion Auxiliary, and was active in the Democratic Party. She was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Brooklyn.

Steven Ray Gasper, age 47 of Montezuma, formerly of Brooklyn, died Friday night, February 12, 2010 at his home following a sudden illness. Memorial Service: 10:00 A.M. Saturday, February 20, 2010, Kloster Funeral Home, Brooklyn, Iowa with Rev. John Dodds officiating. Inurnment will be at a later date. The family will receive friends after 9:00 A.M. Saturday, February 20, 2010 at Kloster Funeral Home, Brooklyn. A memorial fund has been established.
He is survived by a brother Dave Gasper (LuAnne) of Blairstown; a sister Denise Albert (Dave) of Marengo; an aunt Leona Glandon of Williamsburg; an uncle John Gasper (Judy) of Oskaloosa; nephews, Gerald Caligiuri (Cora) of Roland, Daniel Gasper of Blairstown and Robert Gasper (Jenny Daily) of Brooklyn; nieces Melissa Loger (Lance) of Dike, and Carrie Gasper (Nick Krapf) of Cedar Rapids; great nephews Liam Caligiuri, Sawyer and Shayden Loger; great nieces Sierra Loger and Hayden Gasper; Also surviving are many step-nieces, step-nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Carlene Gasper Caligiuri in September 2009, three aunts, Helen Gasper Poe-Rhinehart, Betty Chilcote Visser and Margaret Chilcote Catlin-Krueger.
Steven Ray Gasper was born April 7, 1962 in Oskaloosa, Iowa, the son of Carl Eugene and I. Lucile Chilcote Gasper. He received his education in the Montezuma and Brooklyn schools and graduated from BGM High School in 1980. Steven worked in concrete, construction, and electrical businesses in Texas, Florida and Iowa. He enjoyed playing cribbage and cards, reading, working crossword puzzles, and shooting pool. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. Steve had a very soft heart and a great sense of humor. He will be greatly missed by his family and many friends for his fun, love and laughter.

Dorothy C. DeGood, age 82, died Tuesday, July 6, 2010, at Rose Haven Nursing Home in Marengo. Funeral Services: 10:00 A.M. Friday, July 9, 2010 at the Middle Amana Community Church, Middle with Elder Jon Childers officiating. Visitation: 5 to 7 P.M. Thursday, July 8, 2010 at the Middle Amana Community Church in Middle. Interment will be in the Amana Cemetery, Amana. A memorial fund has been established. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo is in charge of arrangements.
She is survived by a son, Dennis (Rose) DeGood of Amana and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Cletus in 1999; two sisters: Louise Haldy and Elsie Baumgartner; and a brother, Frank Rohrbacher, Jr.
Dorothy Caroline Rohrbacher was born January 20, 1928 in Amana, IA the daughter of Frank and Jennie Fry Rohrbacher. She attended the Amana Schools. Dorothy married Cletus DeGood in Iowa City on April 10, 1948. The couple bred German Shepherds for many years early in their marriage. She was employed by the Amana Woolen Mills as an inspector for many years. Dorothy enjoyed gardening, collecting figurines, taking care of stray cats, and loved music, especially playing the organ. She also was an avid rock hound.
