Wesley G. Reida, age 80 of Brooklyn, died Saturday, March 26, 2011 at the Grinnell Regional Medical Center, Grinnell. Funeral Services: 2:00 P.M. Thursday, March 31, 2011 at Kloster Funeral Home, Brooklyn with Rev. John Reynolds officiating. Burial will be in the Brooklyn Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be held at Kloster Funeral Home, Brooklyn, from 11 A.M. until 2 P.M. on Thursday prior to the service. Memorials may be contributed to Camp Courageous.
He is survived by his wife Doris of Malcom; a son Dennis (Linda) of Chariton; twin daughters, Susan Michalek (Doug) of Victor, and Sharon Wang (Jim) of Malcom; six grandchildren, Jill Michalek of Iowa City, Jeremiah Michalek of Victor, Mike Wang (Kim) of Brooklyn, Jamie Wang of Oskaloosa, Abby Aeschliman (David) of Hudson, WI and Molly Reida of Manassas, VA; four great-grandchildren, Kyra and Hailey Wang, and Sebastian and Madeline Aeschliman. Also surviving are a brother, Bruce Reida of Brooklyn and two sisters, Mary Jane Roudabush (Dean) of Columbus, OH, and Colleen Lidtka (Laverne) of Grinnell. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Wesley George Reida was born June 8, 1930 in Brooklyn, Iowa, the son of Amos and Gerna Haswell Reida. He graduated from Brooklyn High School in 1948 and then attended Simpson College. Wesley served in the U.S. Navy. He married Doris Booth on February 3, 1951 in Tama, Iowa. He was employed in real estate and insurance for many years. Wesley was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, and the Kiwanis Club, where he had served as president. He enjoyed fishing and sightseeing, was a Chicago Bears and Iowa Hawkeyes fan, and loved to spend time with his family.

Wallace W. “Wally” Pasbrig, age 71 of South Amana, died Friday, March 4, 2011, at St. Luke’s Hospital, Cedar Rapids, IA, following a brief illness. Funeral Services: 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, March 8, 2011, Trinity Lutheran Church, Walford, IA with Rev. David Mosher officiating. Visitation: 4 to 7 P.M. Monday, March 7, 2011 at the church. A memorial fund has been established. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo is in charge of arrangements.
He is survived by his wife Paula; three children, David and special friend Elaine Sackett of Cedar Rapids, Jennifer Blankinship (Wes) of Oxford and Christopher (Jill) of Homestead; four grandchildren, Andrew and Samuel Graesser, and Lauren and Elizabeth Pasbrig. Also surviving are a brother David Pasbrig (Charlene) and a sister Cindy Fauerbach (Steve) all of Mayville, WI. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Wallace William Pasbrig was born December 15, 1939 in Madison, WI, the son of Wallace Henry and Myra Isabel Nelson Pasbrig. He graduated from Mayville High School in 1958 and attended the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and then Brown School of Broadcasting in Minneapolis. Wally served in the U.S. Air Force Reserves. He married Paula Louise Voehl on October 29, 1966 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Clinton, IA. He was employed with KCRG-Radio for many years, retiring in 2002. Wallace was active in several civic organizations in Wisconsin and Iowa. He was an avid supporter of the Green Bay Packers and the Wisconsin Badgers.

Mary Lou Roemig, age 69, of Middle Amana, died Friday, April 8, 2011 at Colonial Manor of Amana. Funeral Services: 10:00 A.M. Monday, April 11, 2011, at the New Apostolic Church, 2930 Wilson Ave. S.W., Cedar Rapids, Iowa with Pastor Larry Dollmeyer officiating. Burial will be in the West Amana Cemetery. Visitation: 4 to 7 P.M. Sunday, April 10, 2011 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. Memorials may be contributed to the Essence of Life Hospice or Colonial Manor of Amana.
She is survived by her husband Gilbert; a sister, Sandra Ludovissy and husband Curt of West Amana and a nephew Jason Ludovissy and wife Jewel. She was preceded in death by her parents.
Mary Lou Ehrmann was born August 17, 1941 in West Amana, Iowa, the daughter of Alfred Otto Ehrmann and Elsie Lina Mittelbach Ehrmann. She graduated from the Amana High School in 1959 and attended Paris Academy of Beauty Culture in Cedar Rapids, receiving her beautician license. She was employed over the years at the Amana Woolen Mill, and Amana Refrigeration. She also worked as a beautician. Mary Lou married Gilbert Roemig on May 30, 1981 at the New Apostolic Church in Cedar Rapids. The couple resided in Middle Amana. She enjoyed gardening in her free time, especially her flower garden.

Rachael M. Sherman, age 96 of Marengo, died Saturday, February 12, 2011 at her home. Funeral Mass: 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, February 16, 2011, St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Marengo with Fr. Joseph Roost officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Marengo. Visitation; 4 to 7 P.M. Tuesday, February 15, 2011, at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo with a Vigil Service at 7 P.M. Memorials may be contributed to St. Patrick’s Catholic Church or the Altar and Rosary Society.
Rachael is survived by her children, Melvin Sherman (Dorcas) of Robins, Constance Weichers (Gary) of Horseshoe Bend, AR, and Jeff Sherman (Laurie) of Marengo; eight grandchildren, Curt Hansel, Dan Sherman, Brad Sherman, Cyndi Sulllivan, Rian Sherman, Chad Sherman, Aaron Sherman and Jeffrey Sherman; fourteen great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Also surviving are a brother, Duane Harris (Helen) of Des Moines and a sister Lois Weber (Alvin) of Sigourney. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Kermit in 1978, two brothers, William “Bill” and Maurice Harris and a sister Theresa Lansing.
Rachael Mary Harris was born December 14, 1914 in rural Keokuk County, Iowa, the daughter of George and Ida Van Dee Harris. She graduated from Webster High School in 1932 and married Kermit Kyle Sherman on November 9, 1935 in Iowa City, Iowa. Rachael was a wife, mother and homemaker. She was a Girl Scout leader for 15 years. She loved to cook dinners for her family, gardening, needlework and playing bridge. Rachael was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Marengo, and the Altar and Rosary Society. She also was a member of the Iowa County Historical Society, the Ingleside Club, the Marengo Garden Club and the Marengo Golf Club.

Beata M. Sandersfeld, age 94, of South Amana, died Wednesday, January 5, 2011 at Rose Haven Nursing Home, Marengo following an extended illness. Funeral Services: 10:30 A.M. Saturday, January 8, 2011 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Conroy. Burial will be in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, Conroy, IA
Visitation: 4 to 7 P.M. Friday, January 7, 2011 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. Memorials may be contributed to Trinity Lutheran Church or the Lutheran Interparish School (LIS).
Beata is survived by a son Tom Sandersfeld of Williamsburg, a daughter Kim Knight of Tempe, AZ; seven grandchildren; two sisters, Doris Heitshusen of Luzerne and Ramona Huedepohl of Millersburg and a brother Eldon Weiss of Ladora. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Everett, and a brother Leroy Weiss.
Beata Marie Marita Weiss was born August 26, 1916 in Seward, Nebraska, the daughter of Walter William Weiss and Marie Neitzel Weiss. She was raised in Lincoln Township. She married Everett August Sandersfeld on October 16, 1941 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Lincoln Township. The couple resided in South Amana. Beata was a wife, mother and homemaker. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Conroy, past treasurer of the E.S.R., and secretary-treasurer for 17 years of the Aid Association for Lutherans local chapter. She enjoyed playing cards, and gardening.

Dorothy L. Schumacher, age 89 of Marengo, died Tuesday, April 26, 2011 at her home. Funeral Services: 10:30 A.M. Monday, May 2, 2011, First United Methodist Church, Marengo with Rev. Katie Z. Dawson officiating. Burial will be in the Marengo Cemetery. Visitation: 4 to 7 P.M. Sunday, May 1, 2011 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. A memorial fund has been established.
Dorothy is survived by her sons, Carl Eugene Schumacher (Sue) of Branson, MO and Alan William Schumacher (Joyce) of Marengo; five grandchildren, Scott Schumacher of Des Moines, Jill Simm (Matt) of Springdale AR, Carl B. Schumacher (Jessica) of Des Moines, Joshua Schumacher (Melissa) of Des Moines, and Abby Ray (Ronnie) of Marengo; four great-grandchildren, Grant and Lauren Simm, Madalyn Ray and Brant Schumacher; and a special friend, Betty McGivern. Her parents and a brother Joe LaGrange preceded her in death.
Dorothy LaGrange was born May 11, 1921 in Marengo, Iowa, the daughter of Joe LaGrange and Mary Kienle LaGrange. She attended rural school in Iowa County and in 1969 received her high school diploma through Kirkwood. Dorothy worked with her husband Carl, managing their farm operation up until 1977, farming over 500 acres. They divorced after 36 years of marriage in 1978. In 1974 Dorothy began her career in Real Estate, finally retiring her professional license this past year. Seeing a need for affordable housing in the Marengo area, she established the Bear Creek Mobile Home Park in 1981. Her vision of turning a cornfield into an affordable housing development became her legacy. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Marengo for 78 years. Dorothy was independent, fair and caring.

Harold James Weldon, age 77 of Parnell, died Tuesday, March 8, 2011 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City. Funeral Mass: 10:30 A.M. Saturday, March 12, 2011, St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, North English, with Fr. Joseph Roost officiating. Military Honors will follow the service. Visitation: 4 to 7 P.M. Friday, March 11, 2011 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in North English where a Vigil Service will be held at 7 P.M. Inurnment will be at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Parnell at a later date. Memorials may be contributed to St. Joseph’s Cemetery Fund or the charity of the donor’s choice. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo is in charge of arrangements.
Harold is survived by two sons, Greg of Parnell and Paul (Jennifer) also of Parnell; two daughters, Patti Schropp (Larry) of Parnell and Joan Sieren (Jeff) of Wellman; five grandchildren, Sara and Jeremy Schropp, Stacie White, and Kate and Jacob Weldon; and a great-grandson, Logan White. Also surviving are a brother Clement (Audrey) of North English and a sister Rita Murphy of Parnell.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Anna Cain Weldon, his wife Marjorie in 2008, two brothers, John and Dean, and a sister Margaret Hanson.
Harold James Weldon was born May 24, 1933 in Parnell, Iowa, the son of John and Anna Cain Weldon. He graduated from Parnell High School in 1951 and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict stationed in Japan. Harold married Marjorie Harney on November 16, 1955 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Holbrook. He was an electrician in the Parnell area for many years, then owned and operated the Weldon DX in Parnell. He then worked for Shay Electric and Amana Refrigeration before going to General Mills as a maintenance superintendant. Harold enjoyed reading and puzzles in his free time. He was well known for his commitment to Parnell and his generosity towards the community. He had a quick wit and a wonderful sense of humor.

Barbara S. Whisenand, age 71 of Brooklyn, died Friday, April 1, 2011 at the Grinnell Regional Medical Center in Grinnell. Visitation will be 5 to 7 P.M. Tuesday, April 5, 2011 at Kloster Funeral Home, Brooklyn with a memorial service to be held at 7 P.M. Rev. John Reynolds, Jr. will officiate. Inurnment will be at a later date. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established with the Victor State Bank.
Barbara is survived by her husband of 36 years, Jim Smith of Brooklyn, a son Allen Whisenand (Kate) of Ankeny; a daughter Jenice Whisenand of Polk City; two brothers, Robert (Anita) Sutfin of Montezuma and Paul Sutfin of Eldridge; four sisters, Marie Haggerty of Lyons, IL, Helen White of Huntley, IL, Kathleen Fiorito (John) of Florida, and Teresa Chartrand of Trevor, WI. She was a loving grandmother to numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and a fond aunt to many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Robert Whisenand, a daughter Dawn Kriegel and a sister Carol Earley.
Barbara Susanna Sutfin was born July 24, 1939 in Chicago, Illinois, the daughter of Robert and Lois Bauman Sutfin. She received her high school diploma from a Chicago area school. Barbara was the owner of Whisenand Bookkeeping and Tax Service in Brooklyn for many years. She continued her education with many self education courses in the tax and bookkeeping field, along with attending tax preparation seminars throughout her career. She was listed in the Who’s Who of American Business Women as a most notable woman. Barbara was a member of the Brooklyn Ladies Auxiliary and also served on the local ambulance service. In her free time Barbara enjoyed reading and traveling.

Melvin L. “Sheik” Slaymaker, age 76 of Marshalltown, formerly of Marengo, died Wednesday March 9, 2011 at the Iowa Veterans’ Home in Marshalltown. Funeral Services: 2:00 P.M. Sunday March 13, 2011, Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo, with Rev. Jim Davis officiating. Visitation: Noon to 2 P.M., Sunday, March 13, 2011 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. Burial will be at Koszta Cemetery with Military Honors conducted by Marengo American Legion Post #76. A memorial fund has been established. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo, is in charge of arrangements.
Melvin is survived by four children David Slaymaker of Koszta, Dale Slaymaker (Mindi), Denise Roberts (Nick) and Diane Maas (Rich) all of Marengo; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Also surviving are two brothers Don Slaymaker (Lovell), and Marvin Slaymaker, both of Marengo. He was preceded in death by his parents, one grandchild Alex Slaymaker, and two brothers Dean and Richard.
Melvin LeRoy Slaymaker was born on February 1, 1935 in Koszta, Iowa, the son of McCellan and Arlene Hartz Slaymaker. He received his elementary education in the Koszta Schoolhouse. He served in the U.S. Army from 1952-54 and received his high school diploma while in the military. Sheik worked as a plumber and was employed by S&S Plumbing and Heating until he retired. Sheik was a lifetime member of the Belle Plaine American Legion. He enjoyed fishing, reading, rolle bolle, playing cards, and drinking with his friends. He had been residing at the Iowa Veterans’ Home in Marshalltown since 2004.
