Russell R. “Russ” Sandersfeld, age 79, of Amana, died suddenly on Saturday, February 11, 2012 at his restaurant, following an apparent heart attack. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, February 15, 2012, Trinity Lutheran Church in Walford, Iowa. Burial will be at First Lutheran Cemetery, rural Conroy. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 P.M. on Tuesday February 14, 2012 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Walford. A memorial fund has been established. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo is in charge of arrangements.
Russell Rudolph Sandersfeld was born April 17, 1932, the fourth of five children of Rudolph Henry and Dora Dorthea (Witte) Sandersfeld. Russ grew up on the family's farm near Williamsburg, Iowa. He served in the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1955 and was deployed to the Korean War. He was a member of the Williamsburg VFW Post #8797.
On May 20, 1953 he married the love of his life, Mary Ellen Martinson, in St. John's Lutheran Church. The couple settled in Amana, Iowa and raised five children: Randal, Vickie, Dan, Michael, and Jason.
Russ had many occupations, interests, and hobbies. He pursued each with gusto. Growing up a farmer, he loved the land, farming, and working outdoors. He purchased and operated the family farm of his father-in-law, Frank Martinson. He was also a skilled carpenter – typically the hardest working member of any crew on which he assisted. He worked alongside his son, Michael, on homebuilding projects and his son, Randal on large tree removals. Not a believer in idle time, Russ also trained himself in woodworking. In his basement wood shop he created many pieces of heirloom furniture for his family and others.
Russ was a restaurateur, working in the business he loved for 57 years. He started at the Ox Yoke Inn in Amana in 1955. In 1967 Russ established The Colony Village Restaurant. Along with his family, Russ built the Colony Village into one of the most well-known and successful independent restaurants in Iowa. Over the years, Russ and Mary Ellen owned and operated – at times simultaneously – several other restaurants, including Old Ironsides and The Kozy Inn in Cedar Rapids and the Colony Village in Conroy and Homestead.
Russ was an avid fan and active supporter of Iowa Hawkeye athletics. He was a member of the National I-Club Board of Directors and served as a past president of the organization. For 30 years Russ's rolling black and gold tribute – the Hawkeye Hearse – has been a landmark at Hawkeye football games where, on game days, Russ was a generous host to hundreds of fans over the years. In 2011, a local television station promoted Russ as "The Ultimate Hawkeye Fan".
Russ had a passion for music. In the 50's he played the drums in a band he started with his brothers, Robert and Victor, and his cousins, Verne and Louis, called the "Buzzin' Cousins". He enjoyed singing in the First Lutheran Church choir with his wife, Mary Ellen, for over 40 years. Russ sang and acted in local theater productions and was never shy about sharing his vocal talents with friends and strangers alike. He relished the opportunity to spontaneously break into song, especially four-part harmonies with his family. He was well known for leading rousing renditions of The Schnitzelbank at his Hawkeye tailgaters, and for singing carols over the phone to friends late on Christmas night.
Russ was a beacon in the various communities in which he belonged and was beloved by everyone he met. He was quick-witted, had a hearty chuckle, and loved to make others laugh by telling a good joke. His ability to remember dozens of intricate jokes and stories combined with his penchant for nearly always being "one-off" when attempting to recall family members' birthdays, names, and other vital facts was both confounding and one of his most endearing qualities.
For most of his life Russ worked closely with several members of his family, including his wife, his sister-in-law, Gloria Burgy, and siblings: sisters Dolores Kleinmeyer of Williamsburg and Laverna Folkmann (Merlin) of Williamsburg, and brother, Robert (Annette) of Amana. Over the years many of his employees, spanning generations, became like a second family…so many people knew “Restaurant Russ”. He seemed to never forget a face...greeting local friends and frequent travelers alike by name at the door of his restaurant.
Russell will be dearly missed by his wife of 58 years, Mary Ellen; his children, Randal Sandersfeld of rural Marengo, Vickie Brackney (Chris) of Iowa City, Dan Sandersfeld (Wendy) of Amana, Michael Sandersfeld (Heidi) of Amana, and Jason Sandersfeld (Sarah) of Shueyville; nine grandchildren, Joshua Sims (Beth) of Iowa City, Jessica Sims of West Branch, Kaitlin Sims of Iowa City, Audrey and Graham Sandersfeld of Amana, Gunther and Ellery Sandersfeld of Amana, and Garrett and Wyatt Sandersfeld of Shueyville; and two great-grandchildren, Martin Sims of Iowa City and Hayden Sims-Wallace of West Branch. Despite his many activities, Russ always made time for his family and he loved entertaining his grandchildren.
Russ was preceded in death by his father, Rudolph, his mother, Dora, and his brother, Victor.
