Verna L. Shaull of Marengo, Iowa, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, February 11, 2012, at the beautiful age of 91. Upon her death, she was a resident of Bella Home Care in Las Vegas, Nevada, her final retirement home. Services for Verna will be held at 11:30 A.M. Saturday, February 18, 2012 at First Presbyterian Church, Marengo, Iowa, officiated by Rev. Jerry Rife. Visitation will be 5 to 7 P.M. Friday, February 17, 2012 at Kloster Funeral Home in Marengo. Her burial will be next to her beloved husband, J. LeRoy Shaull and her son, Ronald L. Shaull at the Marengo Cemetery. A memorial fund has been established.
Verna is survived by her daughter, Connie Sonntag, and husband Philip. She will be missed by her grandchildren, Matthew P. Sonntag, Timothy M. Sonntag and his wife, Naroeun; and a special family, Carlos and Frannie Ugarte and their children, Carlos and Lita. Also, sheis survived by her nephews, Lee Nelson, Donald McGregor, Brad Waline (Karen) and Jeff Waline; and her nieces, Susan (Russell) Schultz (Tomm), Lois (Nelson) Longfield, Carol (Kolsto) Perrin (Dick)and Tracy (Waline) Herink (Ed).
Verna was preceded in death by her parents, Knute and Nellie Kolsto, her devoted husband of 56 years, LeRoy Shaull, her son, Ron Shaull, her 9 siblings, Olive, Nora, Emmet, Marcus, Milton, Echo, Lillie, Kenneth and Elner; a niece, Kathy (Shaull) Waline, and nephews, Gordon Nelson and Richard Kolsto.
Verna Kolsto was born on August 23, 1920, in Iowa County, Iowa. She married LeRoy Shaull on August 6, 1940, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Verna and LeRoy began farming north of Marengo, and continued for 20 plus
years. Many a high school boy has good memories and stories to tell of helping Verna and LeRoy while on the farm. The girls too, have good memories of Verna and her dedicated involvement in the Girl Scouts. They later sold the farm and bought the variety store in Marengo (Shaull’s Variety). They retired after selling the variety store. To keep busy in her retirement, Verna worked in the Amanas for Schanz Furniture as a part time clerk and sales associate. She was a long time member and very active as a deaconess of the First Presbyterian Church in Marengo. She had many good friends and enjoyed spending time with them. In January of 2010, Verna made the big move to Las Vegas, Nevada, to be close to her daughter and son-in-law.
We love her dearly. She will be missed by all who knew her. We can now celebrate her life, her finally being with Jesus, and her reunion with LeRoy and Ron in glorious heaven.

Howard F. Tuttle Jr., age 80 of Marengo, died Wednesday, February 22, 2012 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City. Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Saturday, February 25, 2012, First United Methodist Church, Marengo with Rev. Katie Dawson officiating. Burial will be in the Marengo Cemetery. Visitation: 4 to 7 P.M. Friday, February 24, 2012 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. A memorial fund has been established.
Howard is survived by his wife of 60 years Cleo; two sons, Kenneth (Carol) and Kirby, both of Marengo; three grandchildren, Tina Tuttle (Rion) and Nathan Tuttle both of Marengo and Felicia Koehn of California; two step-grandchildren, Chris Lyman of Cedar Rapids and Amy Imhoff of Iowa City; two great grandchildren, Nessecity Tuttle and Karmia Koehn. Also surviving are his siblings, Jean Gritman (Bob) of Marion, Ann Schutterle of Ladora, Jack Tuttle (Sharon) of Marengo, Shirley Shaull (Carrol) of Ladora and Betty Wiedemeier (Larry) of Des Moines.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Kurtis, an infant sister, nephews and a brother-in-law.
Howard F. Tuttle was born December 5, 1931 in Victor, Iowa, the son of Howard J. and Frances Keeney Tuttle. He graduated from Marengo High School with the Class of 1951. Howard married Cleo A. Young on December 28, 1951 at the Methodist Church in Marengo. The couple farmed in the area for many years. They owned and operated “The Dock” restaurant on Highway 6 in the 1970’s. Howard also worked at Amana Refrigeration, Davies Feed, and Thermogas. He was a school bus driver for Iowa Valley Schools, delivered campers across the nation, and was a lawn mower mechanic in Sigourney. His most recent employment was delivering Cub Cadet lawn mowers.
Howard and Cleo had been wintering in McAllen, TX for over 17 years. He would return with medicines, vanilla from Mexico, and grapefruit to give away to friends. He loved the “In Park Music Jams” and the “Big Band Jams” while in Texas. He and his brother-in-law, Keith Young, would always start their days with breakfast together, both here in Marengo and in Texas. But Sundays were reserved for breakfast with the family. He also enjoyed making beaded lamps and flag poles for friends.
Howard knew many people and almost all the roads in the area. He never took the same road home when out for a jaunt. Friday nights were reserved for his brother and sisters and their spouses in the area. He was known to do the dishes at Dusty’s occasionally, but never at home. He enjoyed square dancing, bowling, and long weekends in Minnesota fishing with his bowling buddies. Later they enjoyed getting together for the July 4th Fish Fry.

Dennis Van Tomme, age 69, of Cedar Rapids, died Friday, January 27, 2012 at Mercy Hospital in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Mass of Christian Burial: 2:00 P.M. Monday, January 30, 2012, St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Brooklyn, IA with Fr. Brian Shepley officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Brooklyn. Visitation: 12:00 noon until service time Monday, January 30, 2012 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. A memorial fund has been established. Kloster Funeral Home, Brooklyn is in charge of arrangements.
Friends are also invited to “Celebrate Dennis’ Life” at Just Jules, 835 Center Point Road NE, Cedar Rapids, IA, on Wednesday, February 1, 2012 from 4 to 8 P.M.
Dennis is survived by five daughters, Kelli Kelchen (John) of Marion, Heather Burkart (Terry) of West Des Moines, Rachel Van Tomme (Ed) of Cedar Rapids, Nicole Wagner (Jim) of Cedar Rapids, and Tiffany Van Tomme of Cedar Rapids; a son Dennis Kramer of Kentucky; six grandchildren, Justin, Wyatt and Reagan Burt and Caleb, Abbe and Ellie Wagner; his mother Mervin Rachel Van Tomme of Brooklyn, and a sister Colette Pfetzing of Sacramento, CA. He was preceded in death by his father Rene Van Tomme.
Dennis Van Tomme was born June 26, 1942 in Moline, Illinois, the son of Rene and Mervin Rachel West Van Tomme. He graduated from Montezuma High School in 1960 and attended the University of Iowa for 3 years, studying Aeronautical Engineering. Dennis was an entrepreneur. He pursued a successful career in investment sales and small business ownership. He sold kitchenware for many years and was top salesman for many of those years. His proudest moments were feeding the homeless on Thanksgiving at his restaurant Denny’s Green Square. He operated several restaurants over the years, including The Flamingo, The King Tutt Lounge, Denny’s Green Square and The Flame Room. He was a member of SaPaDaPaSo. Dennis was an avid hunter and fisherman. He enjoyed mushroom hunting, gardening and playing euchre. But he especially loved spending time with his family and friends.

Henry C. “Heinie” Eichhorn, age 88 of Marengo, died Thursday, February 9, 2012 at Rose Haven Nursing Home in Marengo. Graveside Services: 11:00 A.M. Monday, February 13, 2012 at the Marengo Cemetery, with Rev. Gerald Rife officiating. Visitation: 2 to 5 P.M. Sunday, February 12, 2012 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. A memorial fund has been established.
Heinie is survived by his brother Charles and wife Nancy of Belle Plaine and a sister-in-law Gloria Eichhorn of Fairfax. He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Elizabeth Ehrmann Eichhorn, and two brothers, Elmer and Harold.
Henry Christian Eichhorn was born December 3, 1923 in Marengo, Iowa, the son of Henry F. and Elizabeth Ehrmann Eichhorn. He attended the Conroy schools. Henry worked at Amana Refrigeration for 37 years. He also was a farmhand, and sorted seed corn at Pioneer Seed for many years. Heinie was a girls’ softball coach in Marengo for over 40 years. He could be found at the softball fields all spring and summer long. He was an avid bowler for many years and enjoyed spending time with his friends at Lucky 6 Lanes.

Charles “Charlie” Eugene Myers, age 85 of Cedar Rapids, formerly of Marengo, passed away Monday, April 30, 2012 at his home surrounded by his family. Memorial Service: 11:00 A.M. Saturday, May 5, 2012, First Presbyterian Church, Marengo with Rev. Gerald Rife officiating. Inurnment with Military Honors will be in the Marengo Cemetery, next to his first wife, parents and sisters. The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 P.M. Friday, May 4, 2012 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. Memorials may be contributed to First Presbyterian Church, Marengo, St. James Methodist Church, Cedar Rapids or Iowa Hospice, Cedar Rapids.
Charlie is survived by his wife Eva; his five children, Charles “Chuck” H. Myers (Carla) of Hartford, IA, Anthony “Tony” M.J. Myers (Nancy) of Green Bay, WI, Michele “Mickie” F. Johnson (Jerry) of Houston, TX, Andrea D. Young (Doug) of Mead, CO, and Matthew E. Myers (Kelly) of Spokane, WA; twelve grandchildren, seventeen great-grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren, as well as mother-in-law Edna Allman, sister-in-law Carolyn Cooper (Lee), brother-in-law Ed Allman (Doris), three step-children, Teri Svoboda (Dave), Stephanie French (Matt), and Wendy Schmitz (Roger); six step-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren.
Charlie was born November 7, 1926 in the Myers' family home three miles south of Marengo. He was the only son of Howard Levi Myers and Helen Minnie Hunzelman Myers. His two older sisters, Ethel “Beth” E. Adreon and Arlene H. Feiereisen, passed before him.
Charlie graduated from Carson High School in Marengo and attended the University of Iowa in Iowa City. He served in the U.S. Air Force and was a staff sergeant crew chief on P-51 fighter aircraft at Nellis AFB in Las Vegas. Besides being a farmer, he had his own business as an electrical contractor. He was an avid bowler, and was the first person to bowl a 700 series in official league play at Lucky Six Lanes in Marengo. He also enjoyed watching and feeding birds, roller skating, Bible study, card-playing and watching sports on television. Charlie was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, the Marengo American Legion Post 76, El Kahir Shrine, and the P-3 retirees of Cedar Rapids.
He met his first wife and mother of his children, Evelyn Faye Turner Myers in Las Vegas when she was playing baseball with friends. They were married September 1, 1950 in Las Vegas. In 1996 Evelyn passed away at the Myers’ home. Charlie met his second wife, Eva Mae Allman Myers, through his daughter and they married on April 29, 2000 in Cedar Rapids. They resided on the farm for nine years until they moved to their present home in Cedar Rapids.
Charlie will be greatly missed by his family and all who knew him.

Catherine Roberta Kriegel, age 91, of Brooklyn, died Saturday, April 28, 2012 at Grandview Heights Nursing Home in Marshalltown. Mass of Christian Burial: 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, May 2, 2012, St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Brooklyn, Iowa with Fr. Brian Shepley officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Brooklyn. Visitation: 4 to 7 P.M. Tuesday, May 1, 2012, Kloster Funeral Home, Brooklyn, with a Scripture Service at 7 P.M.
Roberta is survived by thirteen children, Francis Kriegel (Marilyn) of Victor, Joanne Phillips (Gary) of Marshalltown, Jane Glasford (Mike) of Crooks, SD, Raphael Kriegel (Diane) of Montezuma, Thomas Kriegel of Brooklyn, Theresa Goeke (Tom) of Marshalltown, Elizabeth Cretin (Charles) of Eldora, Vincent Kriegel of Crooks, SD, Margaret Carlton (Darrell Beason) of Brooklyn, Dave Kriegel (Chelle) of Laurel, IA, Dorothy Allen (Nathan) of Winterset, Ted Kriegel (Tammy) of Brooklyn and Agnes Crabtree (James) of Brooklyn; 33 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren. Also surviving are four brothers, Joseph Pfiffner (Vera) of Waterloo, Herbert Pfiffner (Jean) of Dunkerton, Cletus Pfiffner (Evelyn) of Oelwein and Vincent Pfiffner of Raymond, and a sister Mary Agnes Barnes (Gene) of Vinton.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband William John Kriegel in 1996, two grandsons Lloyd and Walter Kriegel, a great-granddaughter, Ashley Phillips, a brother Francis Pfiffner, and five sisters-in-law, Ann, Marian, Carol, Joanne and Helen Pfiffner.
Catherine Roberta Pfiffner was born August 29, 1920 in Waterloo, Iowa, the daughter of Raymond and Johanna Geib Pfiffner. She received her education in the Black Hawk County schools, graduating from 8th grade in 1934. She married William John Kriegel on November 28, 1945 at Barclay Catholic Church, rural Dunkerton, Iowa. Roberta was a mother and a homemaker. She enjoyed crocheting, sewing and quilting. She also enjoyed baking. Roberta was very fond of all the little babies in the family over the years. She was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, the Altar and Rosary Society, Circle Club, and the Women’s Catholic Foresters. She was very active in 4-H in earlier years.

Marcel Lynn Roth, age 55 of Brooklyn, Iowa, left us Wednesday, April 25, 2012. He died at Brooklyn Community Estate following an extended illness.
Mass of Christian Burial: 10:00 A.M. Saturday, April 28, 2012, St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Brooklyn with Fr. Brian Shepley officiating. Marcel is survived by his mother, Imelda Roth of Traer; his daughter Erica Kocka (Dan) of Fairview Heights, IL; his son, Justin Roth of Victor; and two grandchildren, Ivy Roth and Alexis Roth of Victor. Also surviving are six brothers and four sisters, Pamela Reinburg (Bill) of Centralia, IL, Dean Roth (Becky) of Brooklyn, Garland Roth of Brooklyn, Cynthia Van Hove (Craig) of Traer, Andrew Roth (Jo) of Brooklyn, Valerie Roth of Traer, Marcia Stegall (Gary) of Abingdon, IL, Martin Roth (Lisa) of Verona, WI, Jerry Roth (Brenda) of Janesville, WI and Francis Roth (Michelle) of Marengo; along with many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father Maynard Roth and a brother Dwight Roth.
Marcel Lynn Roth was born July 18, 1956 in Grinnell, IA, the son of Maynard and Imelda Henle Roth. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and served from 1974-1977 as a radio operator. Following his honorable discharge, he returned to Brooklyn, and was employed with Malcom Stone for 33 years. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. He could be found “cruisin” in his 2007 Ford Mustang or his F-150 pickup. He especially enjoyed spending time with his children and showering his grandchildren with lots of candy.

Mariene “Reene” Olson, age 90 of Marengo, died Tuesday, April 24, 2012 at Rose Haven Nursing Home. Funeral Services: 10:30 A.M. Saturday, April 28, 2012, First Presbyterian Church, Marengo with Rev. Gerald Rife officiating. Burial will be in the First Lutheran Cemetery, rural Conroy. Visitation: 4 to 7 P.M. Friday, April 27, 2012, Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. Memorials may be contributed to the First Presbyterian Women, the Marengo Library, or Safe Haven of Iowa County.
She is survived by eight grandchildren, Sheri Olson, Lance Olson, Linette Olson Lacina, Holly Olson Disterhoft (Duane), all of Marengo, Seth Griggs of Grinnell, Josie Olson Cary (Timothy) of Ladora, Meloney Olson of Union Ridge, MD, and Sandy Olson Henry (Steven) of Union Ridge, MD; eleven great-grandchildren, Adam Olson (Jenni), Colton, Madison and Carter Lacina, Emma Disterhoft, Taylor Halligan (Mitch), Cale Disterhoft (Michelle), Steven, Kaylee and Emma Henry, and Isaac J. Cary; and four great-great-grandchildren, Robert A. Olson and Gabriel L. Olson, Max Taylor and Gideon Disterhoft.
Also surviving are nieces and nephews, Mary Weldon Baumgartner of Marengo, Zelda Weldon Clubb of North English, Joe Weldon of Cedar Rapids, and Jim Weldon of New York City, NY, and two daughters-in-law, Linda Olson of Coralville, and Else Krakow (Wayne) of Marengo, who took great care of her in her final years.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Louis E. Olson, two sons, Robert L. Olson and Larry G. Olson, a sister Viola Weldon, a nephew Bruce V. Weldon, a niece Marilyn Weldon Smith, a brother-in-law, Bruce Weldon, and a daughter-in-law Nancy Olson Brooks.
Mariene Valentine Hite was born February 14, 1922 in Marengo, Iowa, the daughter of Uriah and Emma Blair Hite. She was a member of the Marengo High School Class of 1940. Reene married Louis Eugene Olson on December 31, 1938 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Reene was employed as a bookkeeper at the Goodyear Store in Marengo until 1960. She then attended Paris Academy of Beauty in Cedar Rapids and received her beautician license in 1961. She owned and operated Mariene’s Hair Salon from 1962 - 1989. Reene managed the Marengo Housing Corporation, and was secretary of the board of directors, retiring in the late 1990’s. She and her husband, Louis, enjoyed square dancing and round dancing for many years. She also belonged to a synchronized swim team in Cedar Rapids and appeared in several performances coached by Beulah Gundling in the early 1960’s. Reene was a great believer of exercise before it was fashionable. She did weekly aerobics well in to her 80’s, and was a member of T.O.P.S. for most of her adult life. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Marengo, and the Presbyterian Women for over 80 years, and the Marengo American Legion Auxiliary.
Mariene “Reene” was an energetic fun-loving wife, mother, grandmother and great and great-great grandmother. She will be dearly missed by her family, church family and many friends. Let us be comforted in the knowledge that God has now granted her often-expressed wish to be reunited with her “three boys” in heaven.
