James Ross “Jim” Donachie, age 89 of Mount Pleasant, SC, died Sunday, May 27, 2012 in South Carolina. Graveside Services: 11:00 A.M. Friday, June 1, 2012, Calvary Cemetery, Brooklyn, Iowa with Rev. John Dodds officiating. Military Honors will be conducted by Brooklyn American Legion Post #294. There will be no visitation. Kloster Funeral Home, Brooklyn is in charge of arrangements.
He is survived by three sons Dave Donachie of Amarillo, TX, Mike Donachie (Nancy) of Orlando, Fl, and John Donachie (Sandy) of Charleston, SC; and two grandchildren, Adam and April Donachie. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his spouse Evelyn “Casey” Lacaeyse Donachie in 1985.

Anna L. Floerchinger Woehr, age 97 of Marengo, died Saturday, May 26, 2012 at Brooklyn Community Estate in Brooklyn. Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Saturday, June 2, 2012, St. John’s Lutheran Church, Marengo with Rev. Gary Sears officiating. Burial will be in the Marengo Cemetery. Visitation: 4 to 7 P.M. Friday, June 1, 2012 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Marengo. A memorial fund has been established.
Anna is survived by her five daughters, Grace (Roy) Schumacher of Davenport, Sylvia (Don) Kummer of Garnet Valley, PA, Virginia (Dale) Sperry of Marengo, Mary (Chuck) Wilde of Peach Tree City, GA, and Carol (Alan) Hubbard of Princeton, MO.; twelve grandchildren; twenty great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren. Also surviving are three step children and several nieces, nephews and two sisters-in-law.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands Carl Floerchinger and Fred Woehr, nine brothers and sisters; Rev. E. W. Hinrichs, Pauline Berry, Clark Hinrichs, Marie Boehnke, Martha Borcherding, Florence Krause, Louis Hinrichs, Howard Hinrichs, and Gordon Hinrichs. One step-child and a son-in-law David Soedt
Anna L. Hinrichs was born August 2, 1914 in rural Victor, Iowa, the daughter of Ludwig Henry and Anna Marie Schultz Hinrichs. She was baptized and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Victor, Iowa. She graduated from Guernsey High School with the Class of 1932. Anna married Carl H. Floerchinger at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Victor on January 28, 1934. To their marriage they were blessed with five daughters. The couple farmed in the area for many years finally moving to Marengo in 1954. Anna served the Marengo Memorial Hospital for 20 years. She was an active member at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Marengo. Her husband Carl passed away in 1979. Anna married Fred J. Woehr in 1983 and lived in St. Louis, Missouri. Fred passed away and Anna returned to Marengo in 1995. She enjoyed spending time crocheting and making quilts at St. John’s Lutheran Church .

John D. “Jack” Rowland, age 98, of Marengo, died Tuesday, May 22, 2012 at Rose Haven Nursing Home, Marengo. Funeral Services: 10:30 A.M. Friday, May 25, 2012, First Presbyterian Church, Marengo with Rev. Gerald Rife officiating. Burial will be in the Marengo Cemetery with Military Honors. Visitation: 5 to 7 P.M. Thursday, May 24, 2012, Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. Memorials may be contributed to the Marengo Memorial Hospital.
He is survived by his son John Jr. and wife Jane of Jefferson; two grandchildren, Amy Lawton (Todd) of Dallas Center, and Kara Fogarty of Granger; four great-grandchildren, Drew and Nic Lawton and Dillon and Kolby Fogarty; and a special friend, Maggie Kirby of Marengo. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Betty Jane Scott Rowland in 1997, and a brother William “Bill” Rowland.
John David Rowland was born April 29, 1914 in San Jose, California, the son of Lincoln and Laura Gode Rowland. He attended the San Jose schools through 11th grade. The family moved to Marengo and Jack attended Marengo High School for his senior year, graduating in 1933. Jack married Betty Jane Scott on June 14, 1941 in Marengo. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II as a member of the 463rd Fighter Squadron. This unit remained close and he attended many reunions over the years. When he returned to Marengo, Jack went to work at Quaker Oats for over 40 years. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Marengo, the Marengo American Legion Post #76, and a past member of the Marengo Golf Club.

Marilyn Maxine Read Montgomery, age 85, of Brooklyn, passed away May 19, 2012, after a courageous nine year battle with cancer. Funeral Services: 10:30 A.M. Tuesday, May 22, 2012, First Presbyterian Church, Brooklyn, with Rev. John Reynolds, Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Brooklyn Memorial Cemetery. Visitation: 5 to 8 P.M. Monday, May 21, 2012 at Kloster Funeral Home, Brooklyn. Memorials may be made to the Christian Appalachian Project (christianapp.org) or Guiding Eyes for the Blind (guidingeyes.org), two of Marilyn’s favorite charities.
Marilyn was born September 22, 1926, to Glen and Margaret (Hall) Read at their family farm home north of Brooklyn. She received her early education at the country school in Bear Creek Township and graduated with the class of 1944 from Brooklyn High School. She attended Drake University in Des Moines.
Marilyn worked at the Poweshiek County Bank in Brooklyn. On September 22, 1951, she married Dean Montgomery at her family’s home. The couple made their home in Brooklyn with Marilyn working as a bookkeeper for their Surge Dairy Equipment business.
Marilyn belonged to Eastern Star, AK P.E.O., and was an active member of the Malcom Presbyterian Church. She and Dean enjoyed playing cards, fishing, and traveling. She volunteered in her community and gave generously of herself to her family, her friends and her church. She was a member of the Brookhaven Nursing Home Board of Directors, serving as president for many years. She will be remembered for her kindness to her friends and her love for her pets. She raised a large flower garden and loved to share her flowers with others. She took pleasure in baking bread and rolls as gifts for friends. She also enjoyed singing, both in the church choir and as part of a trio with Agnes Montgomery and Evalena Dale, with Nina Bartachek as their accompanist.
Marilyn was preceded in death by an infant daughter, DeAnn, in 1955, her parents, brother Gerald in 1999 and sister Gladys in 2009.
Left to celebrate her memory are her husband of 60 years, Dean, daughter Mary (Craig) Lang of Brooklyn and son Mike (Mary) Montgomery of Knoxville; six grandchildren: Jessica Lang Bloomberg (Justin) of West Des Moines, Chase (Sylvona) Lang of Cedar Rapids, Dane Lang of Brooklyn, Sarah Montgomery (fiancé Tom Hosak) of Omaha, NE, Cade Lang of Brooklyn, and James Montgomery of Grimes. She delighted in great-grandchildren Carsynn and Cael Lang of Cedar Rapids, and was looking forward to the birth of the baby she called “Blossom” Bloomberg in July. She is also survived by her brother Ronald Read (Jan) of Malcom, a sister-in-law, Darlene Read of Brooklyn, brother-in-law Robert Wulf of Ankeny and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Carroll W. Gorsch, Sr., age 81 of Marengo, died Wednesday, May 16, 2012 at his home. Funeral Services: 10:30 A.M. Monday, May 21, 2012, Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo with Rev. Katie Z. Dawson officiating. Burial will be in the Koszta Cemetery, rural Marengo. Visitation: 3 to 6 P.M. Sunday, May 20, 2012 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. Memorials may be contributed to the Marengo Memorial Hospital or Marengo Senior Dining.
Carroll is survived by his wife Marlene; three sons, Carroll Jr. “Skip” (Harry) of Marengo, Terry Gorsch of Hubbard and Denny Gorsch of Chelsea; nine grandchildren, Trevor Gorsch (Sarah), Tara Jo Gorsch (Alex DeVries), Kori Gorsch Beck (Cody), Kelly Gorsch, (Justin Jenney), Kasie Gorsch, Dustin Gorsch (Megan), Dylan Gorsch-Soppe, Taylor Gorsch and Alicia Gorsch-Soppe; seven great-grandchildren, Autumn Gorsch, Hunter Gorsch, Jared Jenney, Kaleb Gorsch, Wyatt Beck, Madison Jenney, and Megan Gorsch. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother Kenneth Gorsch.
Carroll William Gorsch was born July 15, 1930 in Marengo, Iowa, the son of William and Elsie “Pearl” Cooperider Gorsch. He attended the Iowa County schools and graduated from Marengo High School in 1947. Carroll married Marlene Catherine Bauler on January 6, 1951 at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Newhall. Carroll was a life-long farmer. He was also employed at Kinze Manufacturing as a welder for over 20 years. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, but spent most of his time farming the land that he loved. He was a member of the National Rifle Association and the Farm Bureau.

Michael R. White, age 65 of Newton, formerly of Washington, died Monday evening, May 14, 2012 at Mercy Medical Center, Des Moines, Iowa from complications of multiple myeloma. Memorial Services: 4:00 P.M. Sunday, May 20, 2012 at St. Mary’s Parish Hall, Williamsburg, Iowa, with Deacon Dave O’Brien officiating. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 P.M. on Sunday at St. Mary’s Hall. A memorial fund has been established. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo is in charge of arrangements.
Michael is survived by his wife, Marsha (Stahl Driscoll); his children, Wendi White (Alan Warholoski) of Leadville, CO, Jeff White of Sebastopol, CA, Amy Pitt (Mike) of Duvall, WA, Carisa Driscoll (Jeff Scieszinski) of Des Moines, Larry Driscoll (Leah) of South English, Cameron Driscoll (Stacey) of Iowa City, and Keelan Driscoll (Mindy) of Williamsburg; ten grandchildren, C.J. White, Isabella Warholoski, Spencer and Zada Pitt, Victoria, Elleh, and Keely Driscoll, Adi and Chloe Driscoll, and Albi. Also surviving is his sister Mary Maxwell (Gerry) of North Liberty. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Stephen and a sister Susan in infancy.
Michael Robert White was born April 18, 1947 in Washington, Iowa, the son of Roscoe and Eunice (Clingman) White. He graduated from Pekin High School in 1965 and then graduated from William Penn College in 1969. Mike married Karolyn Greeson on June 3, 1967. The couple later divorced. He married Marsha on August 30, 2003 in Linby, Iowa. The couple resided in Newton.
Mike was a teacher and coach for many years at Washington High School. As head track coach, the girl’s relay team set a record at the state meet, which still stands today. He later owned and operated Mike White Builders and White’s Country Greenhouse in Washington, Iowa. He continued his education at the University of Iowa, receiving his Masters and Doctorate degrees in Special Education while working at Mid Prairie. Most recently Mike was a special education consultant for the Heartland Area Education Agency.
Mike also was a talented musician and was a member of a band called the “Troubadours”. He was always an advocate for youth and will be remembered by those students whose lives he inspired. He was an avid gardener and enjoyed birds. He was a fan of car racing, bull-riding, the Raiders, and the Yankees. He had a wonderful sense of humor. Above all else, Mike loved his family; and he cherished the time he spent with them.

George Schuerer Sr., age 93 of Amana, died peacefully of natural causes on Friday morning, May 11, 2012, at Colonial Manor of Amana. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, May 14, 2012, at the Middle Amana Community Church, Middle Amana, Iowa, followed by graveside services in East Amana Cemetery. Elder Kristie Yoder will officiate. Visitation is Sunday, May 13, from 4-7 p.m. at the Middle Amana Community Church. Memorials may be contributed to the Amana Church Society, Amana, Iowa, and Camp Courageous of Monticello, Iowa. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo, is in charge of arrangements.
George Schuerer was born December 10, 1918, in Amana, the son of Walter and Magdalena (Oehl) Schuerer. George attended the Amana schools. Following graduation, he worked at the Homestead Lumberyard until he was drafted for service for World War II. He served in the Army Air Force Medical Corp. He married Florence Zuber on August 31, 1943.
After World War II, he started work at the Amana Meat Shop and later became manager. After retiring in 1991, he opened the Grapevine Winery where he continued to meet and greet both tourists and locals alike with a big smile on his face. He made lifelong friends and had the uncanny ability to always remember their names. He served on the Amana Community School Board for many years, as well as the Kirkwood Foundation Board. He was a lifelong member of the Amana Church Society. In his free time, he enjoyed being outdoors, hunting, fishing, and golfing. His greatest joy was spending time with his grandchildren.
George was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Phyllis (Schuerer) Burgher, and granddaughter Emilie Burgher.
He is survived by his wife, Florence Zuber Schuerer of Amana; son, George Schuerer Jr. of Amana; son-in-law Thomas Burgher; four grandchildren, Samantha and Georgie Schuerer, and Liesl and Fritz Burgher; and brothers, Walter Schuerer and Harold Schuerer of Amana.

Mary Catherine Disterhoft, age 80, of Marengo, died Thursday, May 10, 2012 at the English Valley Care Center, North English, Iowa. Funeral Mass: 10:00 A.M. Tuesday, May 15, 2012, St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Marengo with Fr. Joseph Roost and Fr. Brian Shepley officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Marengo. Visitation: 4 to 7 P.M. Monday, May 14, 2012 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo with a Rosary at 7 P.M. A memorial fund has been established.
Mary is survived by eight children, Susan Bean (Leslie) of Williamsburg, Terrance (Camelle) of Tiffin, Diane Williams (Dan) of Conroy, Timothy (Ann) of Marengo, P. Bryan (Joyce) of Oxford, Mary L. Disterhoft of Hiawatha, Julie Bigler (Jackie) of Fairburn, GA and Colleen Lane (Dale) of Williamsburg: 19 grandchildren, Shawn Williams of Conroy, Isaac Bean of Ames, Colby Lane of Iowa City, Caitlin Love (Brian) of Ankeny, Mallory Meier (Daniel) of Marengo, Amanda Westfall (Bryant) of Conroy, Devin Disterhoft of Tiffin, Britney Iburg (Nick) of Williamsburg, David Disterhoft of Oxford, Shelby Williams of Conroy, Seth Bean of Ankeny, Dillon Disterhoft of Oxford, Emily Bean of Ankeny, Drew Disterhoft of Tiffin, Adam Disterhoft of Marengo, Kali Disterhoft of Oxford, Ashton Bigler of Fairburn, GA, Kristina Lane of Williamsburg and Taylor Bigler of Fairburn, GA; and three great-grandchildren, Kaiden Williams, Nash Iburg, and Brodie Westfall. Also surviving are her siblings, John Frimml of Belle Plaine, Robert Frimml (Marlys) of Newhall, Jane Dietrich (Bill) of Victor, Luann Lutkenhaus (John) of Cedar Rapids, Marcia Bonham (Don) of Middletown, OH, Sandra Mantz (Bob) of Boca Raton, NM, Richard Frimml (Dee) of Luzerne, and Dave Frimml of Cedar Rapids, along with many nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Paul W. Disterhoft, a brother, Bill Frimml and a sister Margaret Stumpff.
Mary Catherine Frimml was born March 22, 1932 near Norway, Iowa, the daughter of Cecil Jacob and Luella Marie Stallman Frimml. She attended the Norway schools and graduated from Norway High School. Mary was united in marriage to Paul Warren Disterhoft on June 12, 1956 at St. John’s Catholic Church in Blairstown, Iowa. The couple farmed in the Marengo area for many years. Paul died June 27, 1983. Mary was a wife, mother, and homemaker. She enjoyed an evening out that included dancing, but her main focus was her family. She especially enjoyed spending time with the children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Marengo.
