Janet Rose Colson, age 81, of Olathe, Kansas, formerly of Iowa City and Marengo, died October 11, 2013. Per her wishes, her body was cremated. Mass of Christian Burial: 10:30 A.M. Friday, July 11, 2014, St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Marengo, with Fr. Joseph Roost officiating. Inurnment: Calvary Cemetery, Marengo. The family will greet friends and relatives at a dinner at St. Patrick’s Parish Hall, following the cemetery service.
She is survived by her children, Marie Baughman of Colorado Springs, CO, Mark Brachtenbach (Karen) of Kansas City, MO, Matthew Brachtenbach of Kansas City, MO, and Michael Brachtenbach (Stephanie) and three grandchildren, Zachary, Allison and Gabrielle Brachtenbach of Olathe, KS. Also surviving are a sister Marylou Tripolino (Jack) of Waverly, and a brother John F. Colson (Nancy) of Brookings, SD.
Janet was preceded in death by her parents, Louis and Frances Colson, who resided in Marengo.

Florence Rettig Schuerer, age 91 of Amana, died Saturday, July 5, 2014 at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids. Funeral Services: 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, July 9, 2014, Middle Amana Community Church, Middle Amana, Iowa with Elder Emilie Hoppe officiating. Burial will be in the Amana Cemetery. Visitation: 4 to 7 P.M. Tuesday, July 8, 2014, at the Middle Amana Community Church. Memorials may be contributed to the charity of the donor’s choice. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo is in charge of arrangements.
Florence is survived by her husband Walter; two sons, Ronald (Linda) of East Amana, and Gerald (Fay) of Amana; a daughter, Madeline Schulte of Amana; three grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; four nephews and a niece; and two beloved dogs, Kyla and Josie. She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, John C. Rettig, and a son-in-law Keith “Skeeter” Schulte.
Florence Louise Rettig was born February 23, 1923 in Middle Amana, Iowa, the daughter of Carl F. and Louise Hegewald Rettig. She graduated from the Amana High School in 1941 and attended the Cedar Rapids Business College for 2 years. Florence enjoyed people and looked forward to her many jobs over the years. Prior to her marriage, she worked at the Amana Main Office, the Amana Meat Market and the General Store. Florence married Walter Schuerer on January 30, 1946 in Davenport, Iowa. Besides being a wife, mother and homemaker, Florence worked at the Colony Inn from 1945-1990, and at the Brick Haus Restaurant alongside her husband, daughter and son-in-law from 1990-2010.
She enjoyed cooking, baking pies, and gardening. She had fun dyeing Easter eggs every year and “giving them away!” She and Walter traveled to Japan, South America, Austria, and Germany. But she especially cherished her family, grandchildren, and her dogs, and the time she spent with them.

On July 4th, 2014 Dale E. Lenton of Beaver Dam, Wisconsin, formerly of Marengo, Iowa passed gently into the hands of Jesus in the care and comfort of Hospice Home of Hope in Fond du Lac.
Dale was born on July 24th, 1923 in Blairstown, Iowa to Clarence and Helen Lenton nee Dickinson. Dale proudly served our country in the U.S. Army as a Prisoner of War guard and as a Radar Technician from June 25th, 1945 to December 7th, 1946 and he had been a member of the Blairstown American Legion for over 50 years.
Dale married Dorothy Wilkermeyer on August 20th, 1951 in Cheyenne, Wyoming. Dorothy and Dale had a wonderful life for 42 years. They were both employed at Le Febure’s in Cedar Rapids until they retired in 1985. Following retirement Dale and Dorothy traveled extensively in their RV and enjoying each other’s company.
Dale remained in Iowa for four years following Dorothy’s death. He then moved to Wisconsin to join the life of Doris Bender, nee Wood, also formerly of Blairstown. Dale and Doris were inseparable for the next 17 plus years. Doris and Dale also traveled until health and age intervened.
Dale was “Dad” to Sandy Weier, Deb (Rick) Gempeler, and Suzie (Doug) Fishbaugher and “Grandpa” to Gloria (Don) Linke, Kevin (Jenny) Weier, Ed (Jamie) Tetzlaff, Carrie (Jon) Tetzlaff, Heath (Janelle) Fishbaugher, Holly (Dave) Belongia and Heide (Mike) Belongia, and 18 great-grandchildren.
Dale was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Dorothy, brothers Daniel, Wilbur, Gerald and William, sister Hilda Brecht, and great-niece, Kaitlyn Mumm.
Dale is survived by his “buddy” Doris Bender, sister, Charlotte Brecht, sister-in-law, Julia Lenton, and many nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews.
It brought Dale great joy toward the end of his journey that his Iowa family traveled to Wisconsin to see him. Special thanks to Charlotte, Debra (John) Hadenfeldt and Jennifer, Ashlyn, and Noah Hadenfeldt. Noah and Ashlyn put a smile on his face that will last through eternity.
Funeral services will be at 11:30 A.M. Tuesday, July 8, 2014, at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo with Rev. Diane Miller officiating. Burial with military honors will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Blairstown, Iowa. The family will receive friends after 10:00 A.M. Tuesday, at the funeral home.
Memorials may be contributed to Hospice Home of Hope, 400 County Road K, Fond du Lac, WI 54935.

Delmar L. Knock, age 89 of Williamsburg, Iowa, died Sunday, June 29, 2014 at his home following a brief illness. Funeral Service: 10:30 A.M. Wednesday, July 2, 2014, St. Paul Lutheran Church, Williamsburg with Rev. Carl Cloeter officiating. Burial with military honors will be in St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation: 4 to 7 P.M. Tuesday, July 1, 2014, St. Paul Lutheran Fellowship Hall, Williamsburg. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be designated to Lutheran Interparish School Endowment Fund, St. Paul Lutheran Church Endowment Fund, Essence of Life Hospice, or the charity of the donor’s choice. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo is assisting the family with arrangements.
Delmar is survived by his wife Vera; three sons, David (Deb), Steve (Jane) and Dean all of Williamsburg: six grandchildren, Justin (Noel) Knock of Waukee, Tara Knock, and Jamie Knock, both of Williamsburg, Jacob Knock of Williamsburg, Lindi Knock of Milwaukee, WI and Isaac Knock of Williamsburg. Delmar was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Mervin and Byron.
Delmar LaVerne Knock was born February 1, 1925 in Williamsburg, Iowa, the son of Ferdinand and Anna Reckow Knock. He received his education at the Pilot Grove School and graduated from Williamsburg High School with the Class of 1943. Delmar served in U.S. Army as a military policeman. He married Vera Frieda Meyer on June 4, 1955 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, rural Williamsburg. Delmar worked for Standard Oil for over 42 years as a bulk tank rural delivery agent. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, serving as an usher for many years. He was a former L.I.S. School Board member.
Delmar enjoyed fishing, mushroom hunting, playing cards, puzzles, and word finds. He especially enjoyed his family and grandchildren and spending time with them. Spending time at his warehouse was also a special joy.

Alice Lee Tucker Hayes, age 95 of Marengo, died Wednesday morning, June 25, 2014 at Rose Haven Nursing Home, Marengo. Funeral Service: 10:30 A.M. Saturday, June 28, 2014, First United Methodist Church, Marengo with Rev. Matt German officiating. Burial will be in the Marengo Cemetery. Visitation: 5-7 P.M. Friday, June 27, 2014, Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. A memorial fund has been established.
Alice is survived by a daughter, Elaine Cooney and husband Gary of Hudson; five grandchildren, Vance Schumacher (Adrienne) of Cedar Rapids, Serena Brueggemeyer (Erik) of Cedar Rapids, Alisa Cooney of Waterloo, Alison Foughty (Scott) of Polk City, and Johnette Stephenson (Jeff) of Belle Plaine; and nine great-grandchildren; and a son-in-law, Larry Schumacher of Marengo.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Howard Hayes in 2005, a daughter Gloria Schumacher in 2012, a son John Hayes in 2010 and his wife Florence in 2013, and four brothers, and five sisters, Deana Hancock, May Harshman, Virginia Hoos, Beth Caughlan, Charles David Tucker, Jr, Gertrude Waag, Don Tucker, Mack Tucker, and Joe Tucker.
Alice Lee Tucker was born October 15, 1918 in Pittsfield, Illinois, the daughter of Charles David Tucker and Elizabeth Ryan Tucker. She graduated from Pittsfield High School in 1937 and attended college in Quincy, Illinois. Alice married Howard S. Hayes on March 9, 1940 in Hannibal, MO. Alice worked for Cryovac on the assembly line, Colonial Manor in Amana as a CNA and a CMA, and the Iowa Valley Elementary School as a teacher’s aid with the special education classes. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother who enjoyed sewing and embroidering. She also liked to garden and work in her flower beds.
Alice was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Marengo for over 52 years, where she was former secretary/ treasurer of the United Methodist Women.

Carl George Unglenk, age 80 of Amana, Iowa, died Tuesday morning, June 24, 2014 at Colonial Manor of Amana. Per his wishes, Carl’s body has been cremated. Memorial Service: 10:30 A.M. Friday, June 27, 2014, St. John’s Lutheran Church, Marengo, with Rev. Andrew Gray officiating. Inurnment will be in the Marengo Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service on Friday at the church. Memorials may be contributed to St. John’s Lutheran Church, Marengo, and Colonial Manor of Amana. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo is in charge of arrangements.
Carl is survived by his step-children, Dennis Graesser, and Carol Hopp and husband Gary all of West Amana; five grandchildren, Nathan Hopp, Crystal Hopp, both of West Amana, Tricia Schutterle (Wayne) of Norway, Tonya Grambo (Rick) of West Amana, and Rachel Trimpe of West Amana; six great-grandchildren, Morgan, Whitney and Ethan Schutterle, Grant and Loralei Trimpe, and Brandon Chalfant. Also surviving are a daughter-in-law, Chris Graesser of West Amana, a niece and three nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Joyce in 1998, and two sisters, Rosalie Roth, and Marcella Bell and her husband Jim.
Carl George Unglenk was born June 24, 1934 in Amana, Iowa, the son of Louis and Lina Roth Unglenk. He graduated from the Amana High School with the Class of 1952. He served in the U.S. Army from 1953 - 1958, attaining the rank of Sergeant. Carl was employed with the Amana Meat Market as a butcher, and with Schanz Furniture for many years. Carl married Joyce Gleason Graesser on November 13, 1967 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Marengo. He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Marengo. Carl was a former member of the Isaac Walton League, and the Amana Men’s Choir. He enjoyed music and hunting.

Galen J. Lines, age 97 of Brooklyn, formerly of Marble Rock, died Thursday, June 19, 2014 at Brooklyn Community Estate. Memorial Service: 10:30 A.M. Tuesday, June 24, 2014, Grace United Methodist Church, Brooklyn, with Rev. John Dodds officiating. Inurnment with military honors will be in the Brooklyn Memorial Cemetery. There will be no visitation. A memorial fund has been established. Kloster Funeral Home, Brooklyn, is assisting the family with arrangements.
Galen is survived by his wife Lucile; twin daughters, Lorraine Nelson (Mike) and LaRay Keiser (Mike), all of Brooklyn; 6 grandchildren, Wade (Brandy) Wiedemeier of Marion, Dawn (Jason) Snook of Montezuma, Jennifer (Matt) Johannes of Brooklyn, Michelle (Brad) Graham of Brooklyn, Bryan (Terri) Carlson of Newcastle, PA, and Kimberly (Mike) Kemp of Las Vegas, NV; 14 great- grandchildren, Tara Nowotny, Mike Wiedemeier, Mika Wiedemeier, Paige Snook, Tailor Snook, Jaicee Snook, Kayla Johannes, Jacob Johannes, Michaela Carlson, Andrew Carlson, Mykenzie Davies, J.J. Paglia, Bradly Graham, and Jordan Graham; and two great-great grandchildren, A’laia Jones and Chance Nowotny. He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters and four brothers.
Galen Jewel Lines was born May 22, 1917 in Marble Rock, Iowa, the son of Thomas and Lyla Lossee Lines. He graduated from Marble Rock High School in 1934 and married Lucile Eleanor Ahart on August 27, 1938 in Marble Rock. Galen served in the U.S. Army as a medic from 1941-44, stationed in Europe. Upon his return, Galen operated a Mobile gas station and was a bus driver for 17 years. He then was manager at Farmland Industries Coop in Belle Plaine for over 30 years. Galen was a member of the Brooklyn American Legion, and the Lions Club in Horseshoe Bend, AR. He enjoyed woodworking and macrame’.

Stephen Rex “Virg” Heishman, age 59 of Brooklyn, died Saturday, June 14, 2014, surrounded by his loving family. A memorial service will be held on Friday, June 20, 2014 at 6 P.M. at the Holiday Lake Community Center, with Rev. John Reynolds, Jr. officiating. This will be followed by a casual and informal celebration of Virg’s life, and a meal. The family will take Virg on a final “Cruise around the Lake” following the meal. Inurnment will be at a later date. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established. Kloster Funeral Home, Brooklyn, is assisting the family with arrangements.
He is survived by his mother Nancy Tebbenhoff (Carl) of Dupo, IL, his loving sisters, Susan Hopwood (Ken) of Montezuma, Lori Hiner (George) of Brooklyn, Brenda Mikel Hagedorn (Dan) of Grinnell, and Kristi Chedester (Willy) of Brooklyn.; his nieces and nephews and their families; Nathan (Niki) Hopwood, and children Gracie Kelly-Hawkins, and Ryan Hopwood, all of Brooklyn, Andrea Long and children, Allison, Jake and Luke, all of West Des Moines, Tricia Allen (Eric Smith) and her children Autumn Waterbeck, Faith Allen and Paisley Smith of Bismark, ND, Derek Hiner (Stephanie Graham) of Johnston, IA and children Hunter Hiner and Jayden Graham, Brandon Mikel, Ashley Mikel, Mariah Mikel all of Grinnell, Dennis (Jacque) Hagedorn and son Elijah of Kirksville, MO and Clint Hagedorn of Ames, Emily Chedester and son Brayden Good of Grinnell. Also surviving are many aunts and uncles, and cousins all over this grand nation. He is also survived by so many friends that were as close as family or even closer, too many to list, but remembered and appreciated by his family.
Steve was preceded in death by his parents, Virgil and Mary Jane Goodrich Heishman, and a brother-in-law Doug Mikel, and his grandparents.
Stephen Rex Heishman was born September 5, 1954 in Fort Smith, AR to Virgil Rex and Nancy Patten Heishman. In 1956, his sister Susan Jane was born and the family made their home in Brooklyn. Stephen’s parents later divorced. His father remarried Mary Jane Goodrich-Butler and sisters Lori Lynn and Brenda Jo joined the family. In 1963 Kristi Lee was born. Stephen graduated from BGM High School in 1972. He went to work in Illinois, returning a few years later. He was employed with Manatt’s INC for 30 + years, becoming superintendent of the seal coating crew. Steve had made his home at Holiday Lake for 20 years, and had recently purchased a home in Mercedes, TX, so he could golf year round.
Steve loved and was loved by so many people. When he made a friend, he was your friend forever. He loved the Denver Broncos, Fantasy Football, his Sunday NFL package, the Iowa Hawkeyes, loud music and bongo drums. He enjoyed cruising around the lake on his golf cart and he loved playing golf. He was a member of Duck’s Unlimited and Pheasants Forever. Steve made daily trips to the farm this past spring to check on the planting and he tried to make it to the Tap to see his friends, especially Jamie Manatt, a daughter he never had!
