Glenna Evans, age 81, of Brooklyn, died Saturday, August 10, 2013 at Brooklyn Community Estate, Brooklyn. Funeral Service: 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, August 14, 2013, Kloster Funeral Home, Brooklyn. Burial will be in the Brooklyn Memorial Cemetery, Brooklyn. Visitation: 4 to 7 P.M. Tuesday, August 13, 2013 at Kloster Funeral Home, Brooklyn. A memorial fund has been established. The funds will be combined with the memorials received from her son Rob’s services.
Glenna is survived by her husband Robert J. Evans; a daughter Karen Soliday and husband Frank of Ankeny; and two grandsons, Mike Soliday and Bart Soliday of Ankeny. She was preceded in death by her parents, her son Robert “Rob” on July 27, 2013, two brothers, Arthur and Wallace Keller, two sisters, Hazel LeBeau and Irma Reimers, a sister in infancy Shirley, and a sister Elsie at age 13.
Glenna Faye Keller was born November 19, 1931 in rural Brooklyn, Iowa, the daughter of James V. and Gertrude Kenyon Keller. She graduated from Brooklyn High School in 1949, and married Robert John “Bob” Evans on June 15, 1949 at Madison Church of Christ, rural Brooklyn.
Glenna was active assisting her husband, farming and with his business, Evans Construction, and volunteering in the community. She was an ambulance driver for Poweshiek County, and managed the roller skating rink in Brooklyn. She was a lifetime member of the Madison Church of Christ, and taught Sunday school and Bible school for many years. She helped with the Methodist Church donation center for many years. In earlier years she was active in 4-H, winning many awards and showing the champion dairy heifer at the fairs. She enjoyed her antiques, flowers, cats, bowling, and riding horses. She was a loving wife and mother and will be missed by her family and friends.

Bruce R. Patten, age 65 of Brooklyn, Iowa, died Saturday, August 9, 2014 at his home. Funeral Service: 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, August 13, 2014, Kloster Funeral Home, Brooklyn. Burial will be in the Brooklyn Memorial Cemetery with military honors. Visitation: 10-11 A.M. Wednesday, August 13th, prior to the service. A memorial fund has been established.
Bruce is survived by his wife Jocelyn; two sons from a previous marriage, Scott Patten of Boone, and Dustin Patten of Grinnell; a son Chad of Brooklyn; his mother, Lois Patten of Brooklyn; a brother, Gene of Brooklyn; and two sisters, Ellen Visser and husband Terry of Iowa Falls, and Faye Klenk and husband Darwin of Malcom.
He was preceded in death by his father, Jack Patten, and a daughter Shari in infancy.
Bruce Richard Patten was born June 15, 1949 in Grinnell, Iowa, the son of Jack and Lois Johnson Patten. He graduated from BGM High School with the Class of 1968. Bruce served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam era. Following his return, Bruce farmed for many years. He also was a custodian at Kwik Star for 17 years. Bruce and Jocelyn Ainas were united in marriage on October 1, 2010 at Grace United Methodist Church in Brooklyn.
Bruce enjoyed watching movies and collecting glassware. He loved his family and cherished the time he spent with them.

Gladys A. Tschopp, age 94 of Williamsburg, Iowa, died Friday, August 8, 2014 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City. Funeral Service: 10:00 A.M. Tuesday, August 12, 2014, St. Timothy Evangelical Lutheran Church, Williamsburg, with Rev. Karl Heck officiating. Burial will be in Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery, rural Williamsburg. Visitation: 5 to 7 P.M. Monday, August 11, 2014 at St. Timothy Evangelical Lutheran Church, Williamsburg with a Scripture Service at 6:45 P.M. A memorial fund has been established. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo is assisting the family with arrangements.
Gladys is survived by her daughters, Marlys Stithem (Charles) of South Amana, and Kella Jane Tschopp of Fairfield; a son-in-law, Robert Gerard of Libertyville; a granddaughter, Dorae Lynn Rippey (David) of Fairfield; and three great-grandsons, Dalton, Drake and Dallen.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and her husband, A. Melvin Tschopp in 1996.
Gladys Anna Adelheid Heitshusen was born May 27, 1920 in Iowa County, Iowa, the daughter of Adolph and Emma Maas Heitshusen. She graduated from the Marengo High School with the Class of 1939, and married A. Melvin Tschopp on June 22, 1941 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, rural Williamsburg. The couple farmed the Heitshusen Century Farm and the Tschopp farm for many years. Gladys loved her family and the farm animals, especially the cats, which at times numbered up to 40. She also enjoyed the square dancing group that she and Melvin were members of.
Gladys was an active member of her church, St. Timothy Evangelical Lutheran Church, Williamsburg, and in earlier years, St. Paul Lutheran and Immanuel Lutheran.

Catherine Mae Smith, age 94, of Blairstown, died Thursday morning, August 7, 2014 at the Keystone Care Center, Keystone, Iowa. Funeral Service: 11:00 A.M. Monday, August 11, 2014, Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo with Rev. Matt German officiating. Burial will be in the Marengo Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday after 9:00 A.M. until service time at the funeral home. Memorials may be contributed to the Alzheimer’s Association or the Keystone Care Center.
Catherine is survived by her husband Kenneth; two daughters, Sandra Cerveny of Flossmoor, IL, and Lea Longfellow (Bill) of Alburnett, IA; four grandchildren, Jeremy Cerveny (Sandi), Kelly Conrad (Sean), Sarah Longfellow and Rachel Longfellow; three great-grandchildren, Chelsea, Ryan and Hayden; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother Russell Parry, a sister Rachel Knock, and a son-in-law Harold Cerveny.
Catherine Mae Parry was born July 4, 1920 in Marengo, Iowa, the daughter of William Parry and Ethel Shaull Parry. She graduated from Marengo High School, and married Kenneth Melvin Smith on January 10, 1947 in Ladora, Iowa. Catherine worked at the movie theatre in Marengo, and later was employed as a bank clerk at the Benton County Savings Bank in Blairstown.
Catherine was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, and recently had been a member of the Blairstown Presbyterian Church. She enjoyed reading and spending time with her family.

Carl A. Oehl, age 87 of Amana, Iowa, died Thursday, July 24, 2014, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy, Hiawatha, Iowa. Funeral Service: 10:30 A.M. Tuesday, July 29, 2014, St. John’s Lutheran Church, rural Homestead, with Rev. Terry Small officiating. Burial will be in St. John’s Cemetery with military honors. Visitation: 4 to 7 P.M. Monday, July 28, 2014 at the Amana Community Church, Amana, Iowa. A memorial fund has been established. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo is assisting the family with arrangements.
Carl is survived by his daughter, Carla Oehl Sheely; his son, Scott Oehl; a grandson, Travis Sheely and wife Laura Kay; and a great-grandson Dylan Sheely, all of Amana. Also surviving is a sister-in-law, Emily Oehl of Amana, and very special friends, Harold “Bud” Schulte and Sue Heitman. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Fern of 54 years in 2009, and two brothers, Raymond and his wife Alice, and R. Fred Oehl.
Carl Oehl was born July 18, 1927 in Amana, Iowa, the son of Fred and Helene Hergert Oehl. He graduated from the Amana High School with the Class of 1946. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1945-46 stationed in Chicago. Carl was united in marriage to Fern Wichmann on September 12, 1953 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Homestead. He started his career at the Amana Meat Market, and he and his family owned and operated the Colony Market Place in South Amana for over 30 years.
Carl was a lifetime resident of Amana. He actively participated in community projects and was a member of several local organizations. He was a member of the Amana Colonies Travel Council, past president of the Iowa Restaurant Association, and past president of the East Iowa Tourism Board. Carl and his partners operated the “Amana on the Hill” at the Iowa State Fair for over 20 years. He also was instrumental in the development of the Travel Host and Tourism in the Amana Colonies and in the State of Iowa.
Carl loved Iowa sports, and also enjoyed outdoor activities. His hobby was collecting “friends”. He believed a stranger was just a friend that he had not yet a chance to meet. His favorite saying was “Keep Smiling”.

Stuart Wendler, 59, of High Amana, Iowa died July 20, 2014, at St. Luke's Hospital, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, due to complications of diabetes. Funeral services will be Wednesday, July 23, at 10:00 A.M. at the Middle Amana Community Church, in Middle Amana with Elder Betsy Momany officiating. Burial will be in the High Amana Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 P.M. to 7 P.M. on Tuesday, July 22, at the Middle Amana Church. Memorials may be directed to the Amana Church Society. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo is assisting with arrangements.
Stuart Fred Wendler was born to Glenn and Mary Jane Seifert Wendler on September 25, 1954. He lived his entire life in High Amana, with the exception of four years spent in Homestead, Iowa. He attended the Amana Schools and graduated from Amana High School with the class of 1973. In 1972, he earned the rank of Eagle Scout, an accomplishment that he was very proud of. Following high school he began working for the Iowa County Secondary Road Department, where he operated a road grader maintaining gravel roads. He retired from Iowa County in 2009 after 34 years of service.
He was united in marriage to Wendy Ackerman on June 21, 1975 in Amana, Iowa. They divorced in 1994 but remained friends. He was a member of the Amana Church Society and the Masonic Saint Clair Lodge # 164 of Fairfax.
Stuart loved being outdoors in any weather, and especially enjoyed deer hunting and fishing. He enjoyed visiting with people, whether strangers or friends. Recently he received the most joy out of spending time with his granddaughters.
He is survived by his daughter Maggie (Percy) Fields of Iowa City; son Jacob (Natalie) Wendler of Johnston; granddaughters Isabella Wendler of Iowa City, and Cora Wendler of Johnston; brother Guy (Terri) Wendler of Cedar Rapids; sister Susy Wendler of West Des Moines; nephews Peter, Ted, and Charlie Wendler and Will and Kurt Reihmann, and aunt and uncle, Janet and Carroll Zuber. He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, and his beloved and faithful canine companion, Sadie.
The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses at St. Luke’s Hospital for the extraordinary care that was given to Stuart during these very difficult last weeks.

Elmer E. Krakow, age 92 of Marengo, died Saturday morning, July 19, 2014 at Rose Haven Nursing Home, Marengo. Funeral Service: 10:30 A.M. Tuesday, July 22, 2014, St. John’s Lutheran Church, Marengo with Rev. Andrew Gray officiating. Burial will be in the Marengo Cemetery with military honors. Visitation: 4 to 7 P.M. Monday, July 21, 2014, Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. A memorial fund has been established.
Elmer is survived by his wife Naomi; a daughter Kathy Jo Kurth (fiancé Michael Denison) of Marengo; two grandchildren, Stephanie Weida and Michael Weida; and three great-grandchildren, Angel Jansen, Hayden Weida and Braiden Weida.
Also surviving are three brothers, George (Dorothy) of Marengo, Clarence (Kathy) of Belle Plaine, Wayne (Elsie) of Marengo, and a sister Lillian (Ernie) Schmutz of Muscatine.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers Carl and Dale, and two sisters, Betty Wright, and Emma Krakow in infancy.
Elmer Ernest Krakow was born December 13, 1921 in Homestead, Iowa, the son of Ernest Carl Krakow and Anna Marie Kahler Krakow. He received his education in the Iowa county schools and served in the U.S. Army for two years, stationed in Germany. Elmer was united in marriage to Naomi Kurth on September 6, 1958 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Marengo. Elmer worked for ten years as a farmhand, and at Kelly’s Implement for 22 years. Lastly he and his brother George owned and operated the Krakow Brothers Garage for 35 years.
Elmer was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Marengo, and the Marengo American Legion Post 76. He and his brother made all the flag poles that are used at the cemetery on Memorial Day. Elmer enjoyed camping and fishing in his free time. He also liked to work on crossword puzzles, and spend time in his garden.

Marvin Arno “Benny” Bendorf, age 87, of Iowa City, Iowa, formerly of Amana, passed away Thursday morning, July 17, 2014 at Colonial Manor of Amana. Funeral Service: 10 A.M. Monday, July 21, 2014, Amana Community Church, Amana, Iowa, with Elder Harold Pitz officiating. Burial will be in the Amana Cemetery with military honors. Visitation: 4 to 7 P.M. Sunday, July 20, 2014 at the Amana Community Church. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Amana Church Society, the Amana Heritage Society or the Amana Arts Guild. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Bendorf was born in the village of High Amana on September 4, 1926, the son of Henry and Susanna Wendler Bendorf.
Benny is survived by his wife Madeline Roemig Bendorf with whom he was united in marriage on June 26, 1999; two sons, John (Martha) of Iowa City and Carl (Linda) of Solon, IA; two grandchildren, Analiese (Jason) Brown of Boulder, CO, and Oliver Bendorf of Madison, WI; a sister, Marietta Moershel of Middle Amana; and a brother, Henry "Hank" (Kathy) Bendorf of Shawnee Mission, KS.
Additional survivors include niece Marianne Moershel (Bruce Woodrow) and sons Erich and Matthew, niece Rebecca Moershel (Larry Gordon) and daughter Ellie, all of Toronto, Canada; nephew Scott (Ursula) Williams of Middle Amana and daughter Emilie (Mike) Kaplan; niece Angela (Warner) Jamison of North Carolina; niece Sally Williams of Fairfax IA and daughter Claudia (Adam) Ahrens; and great-nieces, Betsy (Brian) Harrison and Katy (Nick) Dohrmann. Also, stepdaughters Elizabeth Cooper of Charleston, SC; Carol (David) Heusinkveld of Amana, IA; and, Susan (John) Goree of Iowa City, IA and step-grandchildren Katherine and Martin Goree, Forrest Heusinkveld and James Cooper.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife of 43 years, Emaline Noe' Bendorf with whom he was united in marriage on June 19, 1949; a brother, William "Billy" Bendorf of High Amana; a sister, Elizabeth Williams of Fairfax, IA; niece, Nancy Williams Cook; nephew, Brian Bendorf; grand­nephew, Morgan Williams; and step-grandson, Jordan Heusinkveld.
After graduating from the Amana High School in 1943 and completing his freshman year at the University of Iowa, Mr. Bendorf enlisted in the US Navy where he served on two Destroyer Escorts in enemy submarine work in the Atlantic. One of Benny's most memorable experiences while on active duty during WWII occurred while his ship was being prepared in Brooklyn Navy Yard, NY, for a voyage into the Pacific and expected invasion of Japan. On August 14, 1945, President Truman announced the surrender of Japan whereupon Benny and many of his shipmates as well as thousands of others rushed to Times Square for an indescribable celebration.
After discharge from military service in 1946, he returned to the University of Iowa and upon graduation in 1949, continued on to complete a year of post­ graduate work. While at the University of Iowa Benny was a major letter winner in baseball as a second baseman for the Hawkeyes.
His passion for sports led him to teaching positions and coaching baseball and basketball in the Walford and Blairstown public schools. During this time he also played baseball for the town teams of Amana, Marengo and Williamsburg and also for the M & J League of Cedar Rapids.
Subsequently he was employed at Amana Refrigeration, Inc. for six years after which he accepted a position as sales and marketing manager for the Amana Society Furniture Manufacturing Division in 1957, a career from which he retired in 1988 after thirty one years of service.
Benny was also an avid golfer and a former member of Elmcrest Country Club in Cedar Rapids. He was a charter member of the Amana Colonies Golf Course and enjoyed the game throughout his lifetime. Always a passionate Hawkeye he supported the Hawks throughout the years.
Throughout his lifetime, Mr. Bendord devoted time and served enthusiastically in community and civic affairs which included the Amana Society, Inc., Board of Directors and Management Committee; numerous community boards and chairmanships on fund-raising committees for non-profit organizations including the Amana Heritage Society, University of Iowa Coaches Versus Cancer; Iowa Center for Industrial Research & Service (CIRAS); and the State of Iowa Small Business Administration (SBA). He served as a volunteer at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics and Mercy Hospital, Iowa City. He was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity and the University of Iowa President's Club. Mr. Bendorf was a lifelong member of the Amana Church Society and served devotedly in the capacity of Elder from 1962 to 1988.
Benny loved visiting with friends and strangers alike. He enjoyed sharing his sense of humor and repertoire of jokes. He found great pleasure in his garden, both in the planning and planting of hundreds of annuals every year in just the right combination of eye-pleasing colors and patterns. Nature’s beauty was his delight.
Benny often expressed gratitude for the many blessings God had permitted him throughout his lifetime; for a fulfilling, exciting, and meaningful life filled with loving family and many dear friends by whom he will be greatly missed.
