Dorothea Mae Lang, age 89 of Brooklyn, died Tuesday, June 23, 2015 at the Bishop Drumm Care Center in Johnston, Iowa. Funeral Mass: 10:00 A.M. Monday, June 29, 2015, St Patrick’s Catholic Church, Brooklyn with Fr. Brian Shepley officiating. Visitation: 4 to 7 P.M. Dorothea Mae Anthony was born December 14, 1925 in Sheridan, Iowa, the daughter of David Uriah Anthony and Grace Cleone Mayo Anthony. She attended the rural Sheridan #2 School until 1939, and graduated from Grinnell High School in 1943. Dorothea married Lawrence A. Lang on October 1, 1945 in Jackson, MN. Besides working with her husband on the farm, Dorothea was a store manager, worked and managed the Grinnell Senior Center and was a certified nursing assistant at Brooklyn Community Estate. She was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Brooklyn, the Altar and Rosary Guild, a former member of the Columbian Club, and the Ruritans. She was active with the Grinnell Adult Daycare, the Grinnell Regional Medical Center Auxiliary, the Bear Creek Community Fund, Sonora Grange-River Road Club and the Seed Program at the Grinnell Hospital. She logged over 33 years of volunteer work and in 2014 was awarded the Governor’s Volunteer Award.
Dorothea enjoyed crocheting, and embroidering. She collected angels and roosters. She always had a big garden and did lots of canning. She also enjoyed her flowers. She considered herself an all-around farmer’s wife. Her family was important to her and she cherished the time spent with them.
Survivors include her children, David L Lang (Patricia) of Papillion, NE, Vivian G. Lane of Urbandale, Larry C. Lang (Lorna) of Elbert, CO, W. Joseph Lang (Kathy) of Boone, and Karen J. Sieibers (Bob) of Great Falls, MT; her eleven grandchildren, Brenda Witmer (Scott) of Johnston, Scott Lang (Joanie) of Channahon, IL, Sandy Flanagan of Johnston, Jeff Lang (Janice) of Omaha, Brandy Lang of Oskaloosa, Michael Lang of Deep River, Dan Flanagan (Naomi) of Colorado, Lawrence Siebers, Kenneth Siebers (Deb), and Paul Siebers (Jean) of Wisconsin, and Rita Ann Tarnowski (John) of Montana; 30 great-grandchildren, Brittany Witmer, Jake Lang, Shelby Fechner, Chris Witmer, James Lang, Summer Fechner, Macoy Flanagan, Josh Flanagan, Steven Lang, Tory Fechner, Aryanna DuRocher, Rachel Lang, Tabor Flanagan, Matilda Lang, Maria Lang, Gretchen Lang, Hawkins Flanagan, Jenna Lang, Zoey Flanagan, Elisa Siebers, Jeffery Siebers, Ben Siebers, Jennifer Siebers, Rebecca Tarnowski, Andrew Siebers, Chad Siebers, Thomas Tarnowski, Stephanie Siebers, Katie Tarnowski and Kevin Tarnowski; and four great-great grandchildren, Cory James Siebers, Brock Daniel Siebers, Brett David Lee Siebers, and Kristi Jean Anderson. Also surviving are her brothers, Charles Cree-Anthony (Melinda) of Des Moines, and Richard Anthony (Kathy) of Anamosa.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Lawrence in 1999, two granddaughters Debra Flanagan and Barbara Siebers, and a sister Helen Clayton-Mayo.
Mac J. Sayers, age 88 of Marengo, Iowa, died Friday, June 19, 2015 at his home, surrounded by his loving family. Funeral Service: 10:30 A.M. Monday, June 22, 2015, St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Marengo with Rev. Fr. Joseph Roost officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Marengo. Visitation: 4 to 7 P.M. Mac is survived by his wife Elsie; his children, Vicki Davidson (Bob) of Amana, James “Jim” Sayers (Vanessa) of Belle Plaine, Carla Myers (Chuck) of Hartford, Adda Sayers (TJ) of Urbandale, Susan Bell of Marengo, Nancee Herman (Dale) of Atkins, and Justin Sayers (Sheila) of Marengo; step-children, Cindy Walter (Kevin), Dan Hollrah (Chris) and J. Brian Hollrah; sixteen grandchildren, Jennifer (Chad) Knudtson, Jessica (Steve) Cerveny, Benjamin Sayers, Andrew Sayers, Chantel Teachout, Canada (Matt) Snyder, Carissa (Tony) Nusbaum, Shayla Bell, Spencer Bell, Senra (Nathan) Whitters; Sara Herman, Nolan Herman, Nathan Herman, Nevin Herman; Stella Sayers, and William Sayers; and ten great-grandchildren; six step-grandchildren, Lacie (Tim) Blattner, Abbie (Taylor) Maxfield, Sara Hollrah, Andrea Hollrah, Rebecca (Kyle) Campbell and Anneli Hollrah; and a step-great grandchild. Also surviving is his sister, Sally Anderson of Santa Barbara, CA.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Mabelle Rogers Sayers, his first wife, Darlene Eckert Sayers, a son Dudley, a daughter Paula, and three brothers, William, James, and Dean “Bud” Sayers.
Mac J. Sayers was born April 22, 1927 on the family farm, in Iowa County, Iowa, the son of James William and Mabelle Merle Rogers Sayers. He attended the Iowa County schools and graduated from Marengo High School with the Class of 1945. He was a life-long farmer in the Iowa County area. Mac and Darlene Eckert were married September 14, 1948 in Kansas City, MO. She passed away July 6, 1987. He later married Elsie Hahn Hollrah on August 3, 1991 at Middle Amana, Iowa.
Mac loved spending time with his family, especially outdoors on top of the hill, “Buffalo Acres” with roaring bonfires. He liked to play cards and dominos. He also spent many hours tending his buffalo, and never missed a chance to go mushroom hunting. In his younger years he enjoyed hunting, fishing, traveling and dancing. He also served as a township trustee for a number of years.
Florence Ethel Kochuyt, age 93 of Brooklyn, formerly of Grinnell, died Sunday morning, June 14, 2015 at Brooklyn Community Estate. Per her wishes, there will be no services. Kloster Funeral Home, Brooklyn is assisting the family with arrangements.
Florence is survived by her children, John “Jack” Irwin (Gay), Betty Ann Wolos (Ed), and Chuck Kochuyt (Jean); ten grandchildren, Kevin, Debbie, Lisa, Brad, Edward, Christine, Cheryl, Shellie, Josh, and Jeremy; twenty-four great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. Also surviving is her sister Charlotte.
She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, Henry, Raymond, and George, a sister Helen, a son Terry Lee Kochuyt, and a grandson Richard.
Florence Ethel Ameye was born May 20, 1922 in Patterson, New Jersey, the daughter of Edmond and Rose Lippens Ameye. She completed her education through the eighth grade. Florence was a homemaker and mother. She enjoyed traveling, camping, crocheting, and cross stitch. She knitted baby hats for the local hospitals obstetrics and nursery departments. Her world revolved around her family, and she cherished the many family gatherings and activities. She especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
John Richard “Dick” Watts, age 84, of Clinton, MO, formerly of Marengo, died Friday June 5, 2015, at The Kansas City Hospice House, Kansas City, MO following a short illness. Graveside Memorial Service will be held at a later date. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo is assisting the family with the arrangements.
Dick is survived by two loving children, a son, Gary Watts of Clinton, MO and a daughter, Lori Gates and husband Steve of Neosho, MO; two grandchildren, Ryan Gates of Maryville, MO and Megan Gates of Alexandria, VA; a sister, Darlene Denison of Center Point, IA; a sister, Marcene Rauch of Sterling, KS; a sister, Marilyn Ward of Mercedes, TX; a brother John Watts of Colbert, WA and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Marilyn Ehrman Watts; his parents John and Gale (Height) Watts; a sister, Patricia (Watts) Taylor; a brother Harold Lewis Watts; and a brother George Eugene Watts.
Dick was born October 8, 1930 in What Cheer, IA the son of John Harold and Gale Height Watts. He received his early education in the What Cheer and Deep River schools. He entered the service in 1947 joining the U.S. Navy. John served in the Navy from 1947 until 1954 seeing action in the Korean Conflict. He married Marilyn Ehrman on April 14, 1956, at the Little Brown Church, Nashua. He was a general contractor and owned and operated Watts Construction from 1959 until his retirement in 1996. He was a member of the Marengo American Legion and the Marengo Jaycees. Dick was an avid outdoorsman and loved hunting and fishing with friends and family. In 1996, he moved from Marengo to Missouri, where he enjoyed his retirement and was close to family.
Robert Edwin Carter, age 67 of Montezuma, formerly of Brooklyn, died Monday February 23, 2015 at Diamond Life Health Care in Montezuma. Graveside Memorial Services: 2 P.M. Robert leaves behind a brother Richard Carter and wife Sandra of Toledo, a sister Norma Taghon and husband John of Tennessee, and four nieces and nephews, Debbie Burroughs of Tennessee, LeAnn Carter-Rhoads of Brooklyn, Chris VanHamme (Paul) of Tama and Matthew Carter of Muscatine, along with several great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother Ollie and father William.
Robert Edwin Carter was born April 15, 1947 in Grinnell, Iowa, the son of William Delmar Carter and Olive Elizabeth Ackley Carter. He received his education in the Brooklyn Schools. Robert never married. He worked with his father on the family farm for many years. He liked to relax by watching western movies and shows on television. He enjoyed collecting and fixing up antique tractors. He followed NASCAR and was a fan of Dale Earnhardt, Sr.
Vicki Sue Bahr, age 43 of Swisher died Thursday, May 21, 2015 at her home. Funeral Services; 10:30 A.M. Wednesday, May 27, 2015, Clover Ridge United Methodist Church, Walford, with Rev. Mike Townsley officiating. Burial will be in Hala Cemetery, rural Walford. Visitation: after 9:30 A.M. Wednesday, May 27, 2015 at the church. Vicki is survived by her mother Grace “Pat” Bahr of Swisher; two brothers, Ricky Bahr (Karen) of Marengo, and Kevin Bahr (Sherri Gillick) of Swisher; along with nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles. She was preceded in death by her father Orville and a brother Randy, as well as grandparents, Dale and Irene Bahr.
Vicki Sue Bahr was born March 14, 1972 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the daughter of Orville Dale and Grace Koch Bahr. She received her education in the Prairie Schools (College Community) graduating in 1993. Vicki worked for 12 years at Goodwill as a clerk. She liked to sing, dance, color, go camping and watch movies. She loved many different foods but was especially fond of KFC at Sunday family dinners. Vicki looked forward to and cherished time spent with family.
Vicki was a member of the Clover Ridge United Methodist Church, Walford.
Thor William Curtis Osterholt, age 19 of Chelsea, died Wednesday, May 20, 2015 in a motor vehicle accident. Memorial Services 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, May 27, 2015, New Beginnings Church, Brooklyn with Pastor Joshua Jerard officiating. The family will receive friends from 4 to 8 P.M. Tuesday, May 26, 2015 at Kloster Funeral Home, Brooklyn. A memorial fund has been established.
Thor is survived by his parents, Ron and Liza Osterholt of Chelsea; a brother, Joseph H. Carter III (Aryana) of Marshalltown, a half sister Janice Bishop; paternal aunts and uncles, Linda Kuiken (Les), Diann Pelelo (Mike), Pam Eliason (Steve), Tina Holbrook (Gene), Mary Weaver (Denny), Paul Osterholt (Paul Amundson), Ann Meis (Mark), and Chris Wilkinson; Maternal aunts and uncles, Charles Bishop (Clair), Jeanne Bishop, and Annette Bishop; many cousins and a special family friend, Eugene Miller.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Roger and Elizabeth Osterholt, and Charles and Loretta Bishop, and an uncle Jim Osterholt.
Thor was born January 14, 1996 in Sioux City, Iowa, the son or Ronald and Lizabeth Bishop Osterholt. Following his years of home schooling he received his GED from South Tama High School, and was employed at the Subway and Pilot Center outside of Brooklyn. He enjoyed board and video games, cooking, baking and gardening. He especially enjoyed riding his motorcycle, long walks with his dog, and visiting with his neighbors. He was always willing to give a helping hand. Thor also was an avid reader of books, and he donated many books and movies to the Chelsea Library. He was a member of the New Beginnings Church, Brooklyn.
Leonard K. Dietrich, age 89 of Williamsburg, Iowa, formerly of Ladora, died Tuesday, May 19, 2015 at Mercy Hospital, Iowa City. Funeral Service: 10:00 A.M. Saturday, May 23, 2015, Trinity United Church of Christ, rural Marengo, with Pastor Tim Miller officiating. Burial will be in Zion Cemetery, rural Ladora. Visitation hours are from 4 to 7 P.M. Friday, May 22, 2015 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. Memorials may be contributed to the Iowa City Hospice.
Leonard will be deeply missed by his wife of 68 years, Thelma; three daughters, Lonnett Dietrich Blakley (Frank) of Riverside, Ica Shaull (Kenneth) of North Liberty, and Ellen Stevenson (Kurt) of Tiffin; two grandchildren, Nathan Shaull (Katie) of Bertram, and Matthew Shaull (Kimberly) of Hiawatha; and a great-grandchild Keagan Shaull. He is also survived by a brother Donald Dietrich of Marengo, and many additional family and friends. Leonard was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Richard and Gary, and a sister Margery Stockstell. He will be missed, and was a blessing to all who knew him.
Leonard Kenneth Dietrich was born July 14, 1925 on the family farm in Lincoln Township, Iowa County, Iowa. He was the son of Edward August Albert Dietrich and Mary Orpha Calvert Dietrich. Leonard received his education in the Iowa County schools and served for a time in the U.S. Army Air Force. Leonard was united in marriage to Thelma Marie Punke on September 10, 1946 in rural Marengo. The couple took over the task of running the family farm in Lincoln Township, which they worked for 60 years. Leonard became an award-winning sales associate with Archer Oil for several years. He had a great talent for creating tools and other items which filled a wide variety of needs on the farm. In 2006, Leonard and Thelma retired from the farm and moved to Williamsburg. Leonard was a lifetime member of Trinity United Church of Christ.
The truest philosophy of Leonard and Thelma and their family can be found on a large wooden plaque made by a family friend: “There are no strangers here…Only friends we haven’t met.”
