Virginia M. Derwin, of North Liberty
IOWA CITY ‑ Virginia M. Derwin of North Liberty died Saturday, April 9, 2011, at her home.
A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 13, 2011, at St. Thomas More Catholic Church at 300 12th Avenue in Coralville with the Rev. Walter Helms officiating. Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to Camp Courageous. Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City is handling the arrangements.
Mrs. Derwin was born and raised in Washington. She married James Derwin on July 7, 1962, in Omaha, Neb.
She and her husband lived in Dubuque from 1970 to 2005, moving to North Liberty in 2005. Most important to her was her family, especially her grandchildren. She loved to cruise to distant ports.
Surviving are her husband; two children, Arlene Klesner and husband Steve of Iowa City, and Jim Derwin and wife Michelle of Des Moines; two grandchildren; four siblings, Marjorie Soethout and husband Jim of Omaha, Neb., Marilyn Marcley and husband Harry of West Des Moines, Charles Brinning and wife Jeannette of Richland, and Donnie Brinning and wife Mercy of Brighton; one aunt; and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Forest and Florence Johnson Brinning; one grandson; and one sister, Rita.

Lola Gay Jones, 48, of rural Wayland
WAYLAND ‑ Lola Gay Jones, 48, of rural Wayland, died Thursday, March 31, 2011, in the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.
There will be a gathering/visitation from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, April 9, at the OC Community Church south of Wayland. Beatty Funeral Home in Wayland is assisting with arrangements.
Mrs. Jones was born May 29, 1962, in Texas City, Texas, the daughter of Lloyd Allen and Della Faye (Davis) Jones.
She worked in real estate for a short time. She also managed a women’s fitness club and owned her own cleaning business. She loved cooking, gardening and taking care of animals ‑ especially cats. The most important and cherished role of her life was being a mother. She enjoyed raising her two daughters and spending time with any and all children. She often babysat for others. She enjoyed spending time with her daughters as well as any of their friends, who were also always welcome in her home. She was known for her fun, outgoing, nurturing and giving nature, and her strawberry-blond hair that turned heads wherever she went.
Surviving are two daughters, Kelly Riekstins of Marietta, Ga., and Courtney Rixten of Atlanta, Ga.; her father, of Dickinson, Texas; her fiancé, Troy Jameson of Wayland; two brothers, Les Jones of Dickinson, Texas, and Lonnie Jones of Rockdale, Texas; and three sisters, Loa Heckendorn of Dickinson, Texas, Lora Worthey of San Antonio, Texas, and Lonna Stein of Dickinson, Texas.
She was preceded in death by her mother.

Danny Chester Cherryholmes, 72, of Davenport
DAVENPORT ‑ Danny Chester Cherryholmes, 72, of Davenport, died Wednesday, April 6, 2011, at his home following a battle with cancer.
Funeral services to celebrate his life will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 16, at Berean Baptist Church in Davenport with the Rev. Mark Baker and the Rev. Kerry Hatfield officiating. Burial will be at 3 p.m. Saturday in Crawfordsville Cemetery in Crawfordsville. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Halligan McCabe DeVries Funeral Home in Davenport, with an Eastern Star service at 6:30 p.m. and a Masonic service to follow. There will be additional visitation from 9 until 9:45 a.m. Saturday at the church. Memorials may be made to Berean Baptist Church or to Beacon of Hope Hospice.
Mr. Cherryholmes was born April 21, 1938, in Crawfordsville, the son of Telma and Chester Cherryholmes. He married Arlene York of Washington in 1958. She preceded him in death in 2003. He married Beverly Bain on Dec. 18, 2004.
He retired from Ralston Purina (now Nestle) on May 1, 1999, after 40 years of service. He was a member of Fraternal Lodge 221. He kept active in the Order of the Eastern Star, Davenport Chapter 178. He was an adult advisor for the Order of Rainbow for girls in Iowa and Minnesota. He was a Rainbow dad, receiving the Grand Cross of Colors Award, and was State of Iowa Projects chairman for many years. He enjoyed bowling for 37 years. He was a Hawkeye fan and enjoyed NASCAR races. He also enjoyed traveling with his wife Beverly and the time they spent together. He was very proud of his grandchildren and didn’t miss too many of their football, baseball or soccer games, swimming meets or track meets. He was especially proud of the fact that seven of his 10 grandchildren and step-grandchildren are currently attending college, with one already graduated. His two youngest grandchildren are in junior high and grade school.
Surviving are his wife Beverly; three children, Gail Conyers and husband Kirk of Blair, Neb., Kent Cherryholmes and wife Sue of Davenport, and Kari Hoag and husband Dean of Manheim, Pa.; three stepchildren, John Bain and wife Andrea of Bettendorf, Joan DeMoss and husband Bruce of Blue Grass, and Joe Bain of Davenport; eight grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his first wife; his parents; and two siblings in infancy.

Arlene Jones, 98, of Washington
Arlene Jones, 98, of Washington, formerly of the Ainsworth area, died Saturday, April 9, 2011, in the McCreedy Home in Washington following a short illness.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 12, at the Beatty Funeral Home in Washington with the Rev. Dorothy Halverson officiating. Burial will be in the Cambrian Cemetery. Visitation began at noon today at the funeral home, where the family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. A general memorial has been established.
Mrs. Jones was born Sept. 30, 1912, in Cotter, the daughter of Richard and Esther (Williams) Arthur. She married J. Darold Jones on March 16, 1939, in Cotter
She graduated from Cotter High School in 1931. She was employed at the post office in Ainsworth and also worked at the Ainsworth Four Corners Restaurant. She was a lifelong member of the Cotter Presbyterian Church, American Legion Auxiliary, Eastern Star, and the Cotter Guild, where she served as past president. She enjoyed writing letters, notes and cards and receiving mail.
Surviving are one son, Allen Jones and wife Marlene of Ainsworth; two grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, in 1991; two brothers, Kenneth, and Irvin; and one grandson-in-law.

John Alfred Miller, 94, of Kalona
KALONA ‑ John Alfred Miller, 94, of Kalona, died Wednesday, April 6, 2011, in the Pleasantview Home in Kalona as a result of declining health.
A celebration of life service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 10, at the Fairview Mennonite Church in rural Kalona with the Rev. Perry Miller and the Rev. Leon Stutzman officiating. Burial will follow in the Fairview Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the church. A memorial fund has been established for the Gospel Echoes Prison Ministry and Iowa City Hospice. Peterseim Funeral Home in Kalona is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Miller was born Aug. 14, 1916, in Midland, Mich., the son of Dan J.S. and Catherine (Blucker) Miller. He married Effie Marie Swartzendruber on Aug. 14, 1938, at the Fairview Mennonite Church.
He attended Franklin Rural School in Iowa County. He farmed for many years and also worked as a nursing assistant at the VA Hospital in Iowa City for 24 years. He was a member of the Fairview Mennonite Church and the Kalona Koffee Klub. He enjoyed fishing, woodworking and wintering in Florida and Texas. He loved music and enjoyed singing bass in a men’s chorus. Scripture memorization was important to him, and even with other faculties declined he was able to quote Bible verses. He also enjoyed joining in the music when Chaplain David Yoder led Bible study at the Pleasantview Home.
Surviving are his wife; four daughters, Judy Gingrich and husband Eldon of Riverside, Phyllis Bassett and husband Art of Cleveland, Ga., Joy Cuchna and husband Ron of Amana, and Lorna Bender and husband Glendon of Goshen, Ind.; 14 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Vira Hershberger of Harrisonburg, Va.; and two brothers, Howard Miller and wife Margaret of Phoenix, Ariz., and Willard Miller of Nixa, Mo.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Richard Miller; one great-granddaughter; two brothers, Fred, and Mervin Miller; and two sisters, Irene Smoker, and Marie Stutzman.

Laura Jean Hochstedler, 65, of Kalona
KALONA ‑ Laura Jean Hochstedler, 65, of Kalona, died Saturday, April 9, 2011, at her home.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 12, at the Fairview Mennonite Church in rural Kalona. Burial will be in the Fairview Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. today at the Yoder-Powell Funeral Home in Kalona, where the family will greet friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. A memorial fund has been established for Crooked Creek Christian Camp, Mission Aviation Fellowship and Bethany.
Miss Hochstedler was born Sept. 20, 1945, near Kalona, the daughter of Ezra and Susan (Mast) Hochstedler.
She attended Evergreen rural school. She lived in the Kalona community most of her life. She did voluntary service in Minnesota for a couple of years. She worked as a cashier at JW’s Foods. She was a member of the Fairview Mennonite Church. She enjoyed traveling, reading and spending time with family.
Surviving are five brothers, Robert L. Hochstedler of St. Paul, Minn., Donald G. Hochstedler and wife Ellen of Kalona, Wayne A. Hochstedler and wife Nancy of Barstow, Calif., James M. Hochstedler and wife Pam of Kalona, and Loren K. Hochstedler and wife Elvesta of Kalona; four sisters, Oleta Bollman and husband Ken of Fort Wayne, Ind., Carol E. Glick of Danvers, Ill., E. Marlene Schrock and husband Dale of Iowa City, and Twila S. Swartzentruber and husband Don of Kalona; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother-in-law, Harley Glick; and one nephew.

Robert “Bob” Joseph Mercer
KALONA ‑ Robert “Bob” Joseph Mercer, 90, of Kalona, died Saturday, June 4, 2011, in Kalona, following an extended illness.
A celebration of life Mass will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 8, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Riverside with the Rev. Rich Adam officiating. Burial will follow at noon at Mount Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Cedar Rapids. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Peterseim Funeral Home in Kalona. A memorial fund has been established for Hospice of Washington County and the Kalona Public Library.

Mildred Elaine “Millie” Palmer
Mildred Elaine “Millie” Palmer, 77, of Washington, died Sunday, Jan. 22, 2012, in Halcyon House in Washington.
A celebration of life will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 26, at the Beatty Funeral Home in Washington with the Rev. Fred Bickhart officiating.
