Jean Laura Sexton
LONE TREE ‑ Jean Laura Sexton, 84, of Apache Junction, Ariz., formerly of Lone Tree, died Sunday, Jan. 16, 2011.
Graveside memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Sunday, May 29, at the Lone Tree Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Following the committal services at the cemetery, a time of food and fellowship will be held at the Lone Tree American Legion Post 457. Memorials may be directed to the Jean Sexton memorial fund. The Sorden-Lewis Home for Funeral and Cremation Services in Lone Tree is handling the arrangements.
Mrs. Sexton was born June 24, 1926, in rural Louisa County, the daughter of Coyt M. and Velma V. (Stratton) Westfall. She married Maynard H. Sexton on Oct. 26, 1945, in Iowa City at her parents’ farm.
She was a teller and bookkeeper at the Lone Tree Savings Bank. She was a member of the Lone Tree American Legion Auxiliary, and she attended the United Presbyterian Church when she visited Lone Tree.
Surviving are one son, Coyt M. Sexton and wife Bobbi of Mesa, Ariz.; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two brothers, Kenneth P. Westfall and wife Vera Jean of Hollister, Mo., and Gerald C. Westfall and wife Shirley of Jacksonville, Mo.; two sisters, Joann M. Pomeroy and husband Glen C. of Orlando, Fla., and Judy V. Evans and husband Terry G. of St. Paul, Ark.; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and one brother.

Esther M. Hirschy
Esther M. Hirschy, 82, of Mt. Pleasant died on Wednesday, May 18, 2011, at the New London Nursing and Rehab Center.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 21, 2011 at the Trenton Missionary Church in Trenton with Rev. David Forrester officiating. Burial will be in the Green Mound Cemetery west of Trenton. Visitation will begin on Friday, May 20 at 2:30 p.m. Visitation with the family will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Memorials have been established to the Trenton Missionary Church or to the Green Mound Cemetery.

Jody Raylene Schudel
KALONA ‑ Jody Raylene Knepp Schudel, 31, of rural Kalona, died Monday, June 6, 2011, at her home, following a 4-1/2 year battle with brain cancer.
A celebration of life service will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 10, at the East Union Mennonite Church in rural Kalona with the Rev. Jay Miller officiating. Burial will follow in the East Union Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Peterseim Funeral Home in Kalona. Memorial contributions may be given to Jody’s Benefit Auction in care of the East Union Mennonite Church.

Duane Van Winkle
Duane Van Winkle, 87, of Newport, Tenn., died Saturday, May 14, 2011 at his home.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Friday, May 20, 2011 at the All Faiths Mausoleum in Sea Pines Memorial Gardens, Edgewater Tenn., with Chaplin Robert Mills, Sr. of the 82 Airborne Greater Daytona, Tenn. Chapter, officiating. Military honors will be rendered by members of the American Legion Post No. 285 of Edgewater.
Mr. Van Winkle was born in Brighton, Iowa. He was an Army veteran of World War II serving in the 82nd Airborne 504 Parachute Infantry Regiment and was a charter member of the 82nd Airborne Greater Daytona Chapter. After 1971, he resided in Edgewater, where he had been a mail carrier for the U. S. Postal Service. He moved to Newport in 1995.
He is survived by one son, Gary Van Winkle of Denham Springs, La; one daughter, Donna Roue of Newport; three grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy “Dottie” Van Winkle in 1996.

Gordon Dean Schlabaugh
Gordon Dean Schlabaugh, 76, died on Tuesday May 17, 2011 at Parkview Manor in Wellman
Celebration of Life services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 20, 2011, at the West Union Mennonite Church, rural Parnell, with Pastors Martha Yoder and Ray Reimer officiating. Burial will be in the West Union Mennonite Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2-8 p.m. on Thursday at the Powell Funeral Home in Wellman. Visitation with the family will be from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. A general memorial fund has been established.
Mr. Schlabaugh was born August 18, 1934 near Wellman, the son of Sam and Nettie Yoder Schlabaugh. He graduated from Iowa Mennonite School in 1953. He married Lois Horrisberger on October 22, 1955 in Conneaut Lake, Pa. He lived and farmed in the Wellman area all his life. He was a member of the West Union Mennonite Church. He loved animals, gardening, cars and reading.
Surviving are his wife Lois of Wellman, four sons, Daryl Schlabaugh and wife Charity of Iowa City, Lee Schlabaugh, Jim Schlabaugh and wife Beth, and Neil Schlabaugh and wife Anne, all of Wellman; two sisters-in-law, Madena Schlabaugh and Laurine Schlabaugh, both of Wellman; and five grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Eldon and Don Schlabaugh, and an infant sister, Gladys Schlabaugh.

Jennifer Marie Lewis
Jennifer Marie Lewis, 31, of Iowa City, died Sunday, May 29, 2011, at Lake Macbride State Park from injuries suffered in an accident.
Mass of the Resurrection will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 4, at St. James Catholic Church in Washington with the Rev. Troy Richmond officiating. Private family burial will take place at a later date. Visitation will begin at 3 p.m. Friday at the church, where the family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Prayer services will be held at 7 p.m. Friday at the church. Memorials have been established for an Education Scholarship in her name.

Cindy Sue Vander Linden
LONE TREE ‑ Cindy Sue Vander Linden, 52, of Lone Tree, died Tuesday, May 24, 2011, in the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, May 27, at the Sorden-Lewis Home for Funeral and Cremation Services in Lone Tree with Carol Kaalberg, Parish Life Administrator, officiating. Burial will be in the Lone Tree Cemetery. Following the committal services at the cemetery, a time of food and fellowship will be held at the Lone Tree American Legion. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to Lone Tree Fire and Rescue or the American Cancer Society.

Anna Rich
Anna Helen Rich, 36, of Riverside died Thursday, May 19, 2011 at University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City following a sudden illness.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, May 23, 2011 at the United Presbyterian Church in Washington with Rev. Bob Wollenberg officiating. Visitation will begin at 11:00 a.m. Sunday at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home in Washington. Visitation with the family will be from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Burial will be in Sandy Hook Cemetery in rural Brighton. Memorials have been established for Hospice of Washington County and the Kalona Public Library.

Doris Lankford
Doris Dian Smith Lankford, 58, of Washington, died on Thursday, May 19, 2011, at Washington County Hospital.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, May 25, 2011 at the Gould Funeral Home in Richland with Rev. Dean Elmore officiating. Visitation will be held 9:30 to 11:00 a.m. immediately preceding the service. Burial will be in Richland Friends Cemetery. Memorials for her grandchildren may be left at the funeral home or mailed to the family.

Lucile A. Waldschmidt
Lucile A. Waldschmidt, 83, of Riverside, passed away on Friday, May 13, 2011 at the Briarwood Health Care Center in Iowa City with her daughters by her side.
Lucile’s Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, May 16, 2011, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Riverside. Father Rich Adam will officiate. Burial will be at Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Casket bearers will be Johnny Gilroy, Rick Reiland, Louis Kracium, Jason Snyder, Stan Hayek, and Philipp DeGood. Honorary Casket bearers will be Ronnie Waldschmidt, Scott Rummelhart, Bernard Gilroy, Eric Best, and Dennis Pixler. Following the committal services at the cemetery, a time of food and fellowship will be held at St. Mary’s Parish Center. Visitation for Lucile was held on Sunday, May 15, from 4:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. with a Prayer Service at the Sorden-Lewis Home for Funeral and Cremation Services in Riverside. A memorial fund has been established at the funeral home in memory of Lucile.
Lucile Ann Kron was born on August 27, 1927, in Riverside, IA. She was the daughter of Leo C. and Mary T. (Kolar) Kron. On August 16, 1955, Lucile was united in marriage to Francis J. Waldschmidt in Iowa City. Lucile was a homemaker. She was a member of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Riverside, Pinochle Club, and K.U.B. Club. She enjoyed gardening and expressed her kindness by sharing her fruits, vegetables, and canned goods with all. Lucile loved to spend time with her family and friends.
Lucile will be deeply missed by her husband, Francis, her daughters: LuAnn K DeGood and her husband, Randy of Riverside, Barbara J. Hayek of Clutier, Regina S. Snyder and her husband, Daniel of Riverside and Rita M. Best and her husband, Steve of Greenville, SC, her son-in-law, Dennis Pixler of Oelwein, her 12 grandchildren, Her two great grandchildren, and her two sisters, Ginger Reiland of Independence and Leona Rummelhart and her husband, Hubert of Iowa City.
Lucile was preceded in death by her parents, one daughter, Mary Pixler, one brother, Larry Kron, one sister, Marcella “Sally” Gertsen, one son-in-law, Tony Hayek.
