Evelyn Miller
Evelyn Miller, 88, of Pico Rivera, Calif., died Oct. 12, 1999 in Pico Rivera.
Mrs. Miller was born May 15, 1911, in Raymond (Clark County), S.D., the daughter of Frederick Henry and Laura (Schade) Klotz. The family moved back to Holstein when she was small and she graduated from Holstein High School. She worked for Holstein State Bank for many years.
She married Raymond H. Miller of Holstein Jan. 26, 1947, in Glendale, Calif. The couple moved to Pico Rivera, Calif. in 1948. She was an avid bowler, both in Holstein and California, and maintained a 155 average well into her 80's. She was the secretary of her senior citizen's league until last winter.
Survivors include her daughter, Sue Laura Miller Todd; a granddaughter, Laura Christy Todd; and many other relatives.

Freda Krager
Services were Nov. 3, 1999 for Freda Krager, 91, of Ida Grove at Christensen-Ciha Funeral Home in Ida Grove. The Rev. Marvin Lindley officiated with burial in Holstein Cemetery in Holstein.
Mrs. Krager died Oct. 31 at Morningside Rehab and Care Center in Ida Grove.
Mrs. Krager was born May 30, 1908, on a farm in Sac County, the daughter of Henry and Julia (Wagner) Miller. She attended country schools in Iowa and Minnesota.
She married Harry Sindt of Holstein in 1935. He died in April 1941.
She married Adolph Krager of Ida Grove in 1946. The couple made their home in Ida Grove, where they owned and operated Krager's Cafe from 1949 to 1960. He died in 1961. She continued to work at local restaurants and at the bakery in Ida Grove, retiring in 1980. She entered Morningside Rehab and Care Center in February 1985.
Survivors include two daughters and their husbands, Maxine and Darwin Walter of Ida Grove and Darlene and Victor Hemer of Tucson, Ariz.; four grandsons, Rick and his wife, Debbie Walter and Rodney Walter, all of Oakland City, Ind., Roger and his wife Shari Walter of Ida Grove and Michael Hemer of Phoenix, Ariz.; a granddaughter and her husband, Amy and Patrick Williams of Tucson, Ariz.; two great-granddaughters, Laura and Lindsey Walter of Ida Grove; two great-grandsons, Jacob Taggart of Tucson, Ariz., and Mason Walter of Schaller; one step-grandson, Patrick Williams of Tucson, Ariz.; and many nieces and nephews.

Almer Noyd
Memorial services will be Nov. 4, 1999 at 3 p.m. for Almer G. Noyd, 92, lifelong resident of the Odebolt-Arthur community at Faith Lutheran Church in Odebolt under the direction of Farber and Otteman Funeral Home in Odebolt.
Mr. Noyd died Oct. 31 at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City.
Survivors are a son, John Noyd of West St. Paul, Minn. and a brother, Howard Noyd of Bellevue, Wash.

Catherine Arndorfer
Services were Oct. 22, 1999 for Catherine M. Arndorfer, 49, of Mason City, formerly of Ida Grove, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Mason City. The Revs. Frederick J. Wood and Kurt Rutz officiated with burial in Elmwood Cemetery under the direction of Major Erickson Funeral Home in Mason City.
Mrs. Arndorfer died Oct. 19 at Mercy Medical Center - North Iowa in Mason City.
Mrs. Arndorfer was born April 26, 1950 in Ida Grove, the daughter of John Otto and Mary Ellen (Owens) Jacobs. She graduated from Maple Valley High School in Mapleton in 1968. She graduated from Emmanuel Hospital School of Radiologic Technicians in Omaha, Neb., in 1970.
She married Thomas Arndorfer May 28, 1977. She was employed with Kossuth and Humboldt County Hospitals. The couple moved to Mason City in 1991. She was employed with Mercy Medical Center - North Iowa and in 1995 became board certified as a technologist in nuclear medicine.
She was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church.
Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Kristine and Elizabeth Arndorfer, both at home; her father and stepmother, John and Norma Jean Jacobs of Mapleton; three sisters, Carol and her husband, Bruce Burton of Manly, Joan and her husband, the Rev. Kurt Rutz of Paola, Kan., and Patricia Jacobs of Inwood; two brothers and their wives, Dennis and Kim Jacobs of Kansas City, Mo., and Donald and Anjanette Jacobs of Wichita, Kan.; and several nieces and nephews.
Memorials may be directed to Mercy Cancer Center.

Lois Backerman
Lois A. Backerman, 84, of Cedar Falls died Oct. 16, 1999 at her home. Interment was in Greenwood Cemetery in Cedar Falls.
Mrs. Backerman was born Oct. 14, 1915, in Cedar Falls, the daughter of Charles and Wilhelmina "Minnie" (Peterson) Wiltse. She graduated from Cedar Falls High School in 1933.
She married Harvey R. Backerman Dec. 12, 1936 in Galena, Ill.
Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Barbara Lindholm of Cedar Falls and Ellen Steuk of Ida Grove; six grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; and a special friend, Rose Silverson of Seminole, Fla.

Charlotte Howie
Services were Oct. 18, 1999 for Charlotte Elizabeth Howie, 80, of Ida Grove at Church of God in Ida Grove. Dr. Herbert Johnson officiated with burial in Graceland Cemetery in Creston under the direction of Sliefert Funeral Home of Storm Lake.
Mrs. Howie died Oct. 15 at Buena Vista County Hospital in Storm Lake.
Mrs. Howie was born May 3, 1919, in Creston, the daughter of Harold and Maude (Henry) Hawker. She received her education at Creston Schools, graduating from Creston High School.
She married Max E. Howie Nov. 1, 1936 at Maryville, Mo. She was a homemaker for more than 29 years in Creston, while he worked for the CB&Q Railroad. The couple moved to McCook, Neb. in 1965. In 1972 the couple moved to Harlan. They moved to Ida Grove in 1974, where they retired.
She was a member of Church of God in Ida Grove.
Survivors include two sons and their wives, Paul and Eileen Howie of Storm Lake and Robert and Angie Howie of Malvern; five grandchildren, Mark, Matthew, Kristen, Janet and Lisa Howie; four great-grandchildren; and other relatives.

Marilyn Bruns
Services were Oct. 25, 1999 for Marilyn Louise Bruns, 74, of Galva at United Methodist Church in Galva. The Rev. Doris Lindley officiated with burial in Rosendahl Norwegian Lutheran Cemetery in Holstein.
Mrs. Bruns died Oct. 21 at Spencer Municipal Hospital in Spencer.
Mrs. Bruns was born Feb. 15, 1925 in Galva, the daughter of Earl G. and Mabel C. (Valen) Todd. She attended Galva School graduating in 1941.
She married Duane K. Bruns July 6, 1946 in Clay Center, Kan. She played piano in the nursing home for 25 years. She also took care of many people in Galva, both young and old.
She was a member of United Methodist Church in Galva, United Methodist Women, American Legion Auxiliary Dibbern Post #454.
Survivors include a daughter and her husband, Cheryl and Raymond Johnson of Las Vegas, Nev.; four sons and their wives, Gary and Annette Bruns of Cherokee, Larry and Marsha Bruns of Arnold, Mo., Terry and Mary Bruns of Early and Jerry and Deb Bruns of Waukee; 12 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Gilbert Fey
Services were Oct. 25, 1999 for Gilbert E. Fey, 74, of Smithland at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Oto. The Revs. Edmund Tiedeman and David Hogan officiated with burial in Sioux Township Cemetery in Smithland, with military honors conducted by American Legion Leslie Seaton Post 0666 of Smithland, under the direction of Armstrong Funeral Service in Mapleton.
Mr. Fey died Oct. 21 at a Sioux City hospital.
Mr. Fey was born March 30, 1925, at Moville, the son of Carl F. and Florence (Gaffey) Fey. He grew up in Moville, and graduated from Moville High School in 1943.
He served in the United States Army from May 24, 1945, until his honorable discharge Oct. 30, 1946.
He married Margaret Dahlhoff March 24, 1948, in Ida Grove. He then managed a farm north of Cherokee. In 1954, the couple moved to Sloan where he worked as a salesman for John Deere Implement. In 1984, they moved to Connecticut where he dispatched for a trucking firm until his retirement in 1990, when they moved to Smithland.
He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Oto and American Legion Leslie Seaton Post 0666 of Smithland.
Survivors include his wife; a daughter and her husband, Michelle and John Bainbridge of Smithland; son, Michael Fey of Council Bluffs; two grandchildren, Jenifer and Christopher; two great-grandchildren; a sister, Palma Campbell of Imboden, Ark.; a brother and his wife, Wayne and Lorraine Fey of Battle Creek; and other relatives.

Gary Schuett
Services were Oct. 16, 1999 for Gary Everett Schuett, 58, of Holstein at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Holstein. The Rev. Curtis Benson officiated with burial in the Holstein Cemetery under the direction of Barker Funeral Home.
Mr. Schuett died Oct. 13 at Burgess Memorial Hospital in Onawa.
He was born Sept. 14, 1941 to Everett and Lorine Todd Schuett in Correctionville and graduated from Holstein High School. He served in the National Guard and Reserve. He married Sandra Wilson on Nov. 2, 1963 in Cherokee. The family moved to Holstein in 1944. Following the guard, he returned to farming. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church and its choir.
Survivors include his wife, Sandra; a son, Tim Schuett and his wife Lori of Fort Dodge; a daughter, Brenda Schuett of Baton Rouge, La; one grandson, Devon Schuett; two step grandchildren, Jill and Ryan Canavan; two sisters, Darlene Franzkowiak and her husband George of Schaller, and Luella Nydene and her husband Dale of Storm Lake.

Thomas Baker
Memorial services were Oct. 16, 1999 for Thomas Ervel Baker, 54, of Holstein at Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church in Holstein. The Rev. Tim Schott officiated with burial at a later date under the direction of Barker Funeral Home.
Mr. Baker died Oct. 12 at Morningside Care Center in Ida Grove.
He was born Dec. 6, 1944 in Storm Lake to Ervel and Helen Schott Baker. He spent his childhood and early adult life on a farm northeast of Schaller. He later moved to Holstein when he married Donna Marie Schelldorf on Nov. 4, 1973.
They owned and operated the Schnapps Haus from 1975-80. They moved to an acreage south of Holstein in 1993.
Survivors include his wife, Donna Marie of Holstein; a daughter, Ann of Quimby; a granddaughter, Angelica of Quimby; his mother, Helen Baker of Storm Lake; sisters, Donna and James Lewallen of Cherokee, and Diane and Gene Baker of Crawfton, Neb.; three nephews and three nieces, a daughter Tami and family, and a mother-in-law, Ella Schelldorf.

Arlene Magnuson
Funeral services were Oct. 19, 1999 for Arlene R. Magnuson, 75, of LeMars, formerly of Ida Grove, at the Church of God in Ida Grove. The Rev. Herbert Johnson and Rev. Percy Dervan officiated with burial in the Ida Grove Cemetery under the direction of Christensen-Ciha Funeral Home.
She died Oct. 14 at the Abbey Nursing Home in LeMars.
She was born Aug. 10, 1924 in Battle Creek to Dewey F. and Hattie (Hanson) Johnson. She was raised on a farm southwest of Ida Grove. Upon graduating from Ida Grove High School in 1941, she became a country school teacher.
On Nov. 1, 1976 she was united in marriage to Robert Magnuson and they made their home in Remsen. He died unexpectedly after five years of marriage. She then become a resident of the Abbey Nursing Home, where she made her home for the past 22 years.
Survivors include her mother, Hattie Johnson of Arcata, Calif.; two brothers and their wives, Melvin and Juanita Johnson of Schaller, and Duane and Patricia Johnson of Ida Grove; and one sister and her husband, Shirley and Herbert Peterson of Arcata, Calif., plus nieces and nephews.

Robert Bagenstos
Services were Oct. 9, 1999 for Robert Ray Bagenstos, 72, of Holstein at United Methodist Church in Holstein. The Rev. Judith A. Piper officiated with burial in Holstein Cemetery under the direction of Barker Funeral Home in Holstein.
Mr. Bagenstos died Oct. 6 at Sioux Valley Memorial Hospital in Cherokee.
Mr. Bagenstos was born Nov. 4, 1926, in Cherokee County, the son of Ray and Katie (Schubert) Bagenstos. He attended country school through the eighth grade and graduated from Holstein High School in 1944. He served in the U.S. Army in the Philippines during World War II. He was discharged in 1946.
He married Joanne Louise Hansen March 28, 1948, in Holstein. In 1946, he took over the Food Locker Storage from his father and also started Western Corner in the locker. He sold the business to John Tiefenthaler in 1991 and continued to work part-time until retiring in 1996.
After his wife's death, he married Connie (Havighurst) Roemer Sept. 4, 1988, in Holstein.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church, Holstein Community Club, Kiwanis, Holstein Lucky Riders and Northwest Iowa Quarter Horse Association. He was a volunteer with the Holstein Fire Department and served as a past president of Iowa Meat Processors Association.
Survivors include his wife; a son and his wife, Thad and Deb Bagenstos of Holstein; a daughter and her husband, Mary Jo and Doug Ruffridge of Oskaloosa; three grandchildren, Wade, Brooke and Abbie Bagenstos; a sister and her husband, Betty and Henry Witt of Webster City; a brother, Richard Bagenstos of Philadelphia, Pa.; three stepsons and their wives, William and Deborah Roemer, Jim and Jean Roemer and John and Mindi Roemer; two stepdaughters, Janet Roemer and Nancy Roemer; and seven step grandchildren.
