Thekla Schmidt

Thekla D. Schmidt, age 88, of Silver Spring, Maryland, a dress designer who taught adult education classes in the Bishop Method of clothing construction for Montgomery County schools, passed away on Saturday, September 27, 2003, at Montgomery General Hospital, Maryland. A funeral service was held on Saturday, October 4, 2003, at 1:00 p.m. at St. John Lutheran Church in Hanover with Pastor Mark Abraham officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Sliefert-Asmus Funeral Home in Storm Lake was in charge of the arrangements.

Thekla D. Hesse "Jeri" Schmidt was born icon in Ida County, Iowa on September 12, 1915, baptized in Grant Township Lutheran Church and confirmed in 1929. She was united in marriage to Ervin W. Schmidt on June 21, 1936, at St. John Lutheran Church in Hanover. This union was blessed with two daughters, Karen and Barbara.

In 1941, Jeri moved with her husband to Washington, D.C. and continued her education in Textiles and Clothing at George Washington University. She became a clothing construction specialist, training with Edna B. Bishop, originator of the Bishop Method which is a method of sewing that emphasizes accuracy in preparing, cutting and marking fabric, cutting to fit, stitching and pressing.

From 1951 to 1963, Mrs. Schmidt was a Trainer and Supervisor in the Adult Education Department of the Board of Education of Montgomery County, and conducted clinics, seminars, lectures and fashion shows in the metropolitan D.C. area. In addition, she did clothing design for private clients until recent years.

Jeri was a member and past president, certification secretary and historian of the Bishop Method of Clothing Construction Council, Inc. She was a member of the Maryland Vocational and Practical Arts Association, the Washington Fashion Forum and charter member (1948) of the Washington, D.C. chapter of the Valparaiso University Guild, serving as local chapter president and eastern area director. Jeri was also an active member of the Lutheran Church of St. Andrew, the Lutheran Women's Missionary League and the Adult Fellowship of St. Andrew.

She was a resident of Montgomery County, Maryland, where she lived with her husband of 67 years. Jeri loved her family very much and her greatest joys in life were serving the Lord and caring for her family.

Jeri is survived by her husband, Ervin of Silver Spring, Maryland; two daughters: Karen Cavanaugh and her husband, Thomas of Basye, Va., and Barbara Wilkes and her husband, Gerald of Warrenton, Va.; five grandchildren: Tamara Ellerbe, Susan and Tommy Wilkes, Pamela Range and Steve Grupe as well as five great-grandchildren.

Vernon L. Vogler

Vernon L. Vogler, age 83, of Grinnell, formerly of Schaller, died Friday, November 22, 2003 at St. Francis Manor in Grinnell.

Funeral services were Tuesday, November 25, 2003 at 11 a.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Schaller with Reverend Brandt officiating. Burial was in Schaller Cemetery.

Vernon Vogler was born icon on December 26, 1919 in Schaller to Adolph and Hedwig (Langner) Vogler. He spent his childhood in his parents home and attended school in Schaller through high school, graduating with the Schaller High School Class of 1938.

On November 3, 1941, Vernon was inducted into the United States Army. He served his country until 1945, when he was honorably discharged on December 27.

Vernon was united in marriage to Harriet Dunham on November 22, 1943 at her family home in Early. Two sons, Stanley Vernon and Gerald Lee, blessed this union.

Vernon and his father partnered together in carpenter work. In 1964, he went into commercial construction.

On November 20, 1965, Vernon married icon Lois Downard of Russell.

Vernon was a charter member of the V.F.W. Post 64704 in Schaller. He had the talent and the desire to participate in sports as a young man, and was a fan that enjoyed watching sports as he grew older.

Survivors include his sons: Stan and wife Ethlyn of Beverly Hills, Mich., and Jerry and wife Toni of Wichita, Kans.; six grandchildren; three sisters: Thelma Fitzsenry of Storm Lake, Lorraine Fey of Battle Creek, and Deloris Mills of Hemut, Calif.; many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

Preceding Vernon in death were his parents, and two brothers: Donald and Adolph, Jr.

Bendix C. Halverson

Bendix C. Halverson, 82, of Rock Rapids, formerly of Sioux Rapids, died Saturday, November 22, 2003 at Lyon Manor Nursing and Rehab Center in Rock Rapids. Funeral services were at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, November 26, 2003 at Peace Lutheran Church in Rock Rapids with Rev. George Clausen officiating. Also, there was a service at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, November 26, 2003 at First Lutheran Church in Sioux Rapids with Dean Maiden officiating. Burial was in Lone Tree Cemetery in Sioux Rapids. Roste Funeral Home of Rock Rapids was in charge of arrangements.

Bendix Halverson was born icon at Linn Grove to Bennie and Rena (Hanson) Halverson on April 26, 1921. He attended Highview Consolidated School until his family moved to a farm near Sioux Rapids, where he graduated from Sioux Rapids High School in 1940. After working in a creamery at Lakefield, Minn., he enlisted in the Navy Air Force.

In August 1945, he married icon Margaret Brown and they farmed in the Sioux Rapids area for a short period of time. The couple moved to Minneapolis where he studied at the Lutheran Bible Institute. They returned to the Sioux Rapids area to farm, and lived on the Hanson family farm until moving to a home in Sioux Rapids in 1981. Margaret passed away in April 1989.

In June 1992, Bendix married icon Evelyn Dykhouse of Rock Rapids, and for the next 10 years they shared homes in Sioux Rapids and Rock Rapids. They made Rock Rapids their permanent home in 2002.

Family, faith, and community were the priorities in Bendix’s life, and he contributed his talents and energies in many ways. He took part in Sunday school, choir, Luther League, and served on various groups in the churches of which he was a member. He served as a school board member, director on the board of First National Bank in Rembrandt, and was a 50 year member of the Legion Post in Sioux Rapids. The quartet he and several brothers formed entertained at many community and church functions, and he enjoyed leading sing-alongs on the many bus trips he took during his retirement years.

Bendix is survived by wife Evelyn of Rock Rapids; sons Lee (Ginny) Halverson of Hoffman Estates, Ill., and Boyd (Norma) Halverson of Laurens; daughters Faith (Gabriel) Blaskovich of Lohrville and Karen (Greg) Moehl of Orlando, Fla; stepson Dana (LaDawn) Dykhouse of Sioux Falls, SD, stepdaughter Dalyce (Michael) Sellers of Belgrade, Mont.; brothers Junior and Norman Halverson of Sioux Rapids; sisters Nellie Sundblad of Sioux Rapids and Helen Andersen of Modesto, Cal.; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Margaret, and brothers Donald, Honroe, Virgil and Emmett.

Bendix enjoyed a close connection with nature, and was a careful steward of the soil during the years he farmed. He treasured his family and friends and will be lovingly remembered by all who knew him.

Kathryn Deal

Kathryn Kay Deal was born icon in Lincoln, Neb., on May 22, 1916. She entered God’s kingdom when she passed away at the Good Samaritan Center in Atkinson, Neb., on November 11, 2003. She was baptized at the age of three weeks at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Lincoln and was confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Atkinson. At the age of seven, her parents moved to a farm near Atkinson, and she received her education in the Atkinson schools. At the age of nineteen, she moved to Iowa, where she remained until 1970. At that time she and her husband, Bob Deal, moved to O’Neill to be near her aging parents, Ralph and Lelia Ries of Atkinson.

Kay was active in the O’Neill community as coordinator of Meals on Wheels for Christ Lutheran Church for many years, and she helped deliver the first meals in O’Neill on April 30, 1973. She also served on the board of the Emergency Family Services and was a member of the Christ Lutheran Ladies’ Aid, the community prayer chain, the Golden Rod Garden Club, and a birthday club. In earlier years, she visited shut-ins and conducted a Bible study group. She lived for her church activities, family and friends and all of God’s animals.

Kay is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Ron and Grace Berg of Sartell, Minn.; a daughter, Merridee Matson of Carrollton, Tex.; three grandchildren, Kim Hoghaug, of Sartell, Minn., Ann Marie Babb and husband Eric of Jackson Hole, Wyo., and Matthew Matson and wife Laura of Dallas, Tex.; great-grandchildren Paige Hoghaug and Tanner Babb; stepdaughter and husband Dawn and Bill Anderson of Astor, Fla. and their two children, Misty McCain and Billy Anderson and families. She leaves many additional friends and relatives in the area.

Preceding her in death were husband Robert Deal, parents Ralph and Lelia Ries, grandson David Berg, and step-grandson Larry Anderson.

Funeral services were held on November 14, 2003 at Christ Lutheran Church in O’Neill. Burial was in Ida Grove Cemetery.

Shirley Johnson

Shirley A. Johnson passed away on Sunday, November 23, 2003 at Buena Vista Regional Medical Center at the age of 69. Funeral services were held at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Alta on Friday, November 28, 2003 with Barker Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Burial was in Scandinavian Cemetery, Alta.

Shirley A. Huseman was born icon on September 17, 1934 to Louis and Ella (Oatman) Huseman in the Hanover area of Buena Vista County.

Shirley was baptized and confirmed at St. John Lutheran Church in Hanover. She attended St. John Parochial School and graduated from Alta High School in 1952.

Shirley was united in marriage to Carrol L. Johnson on December 13, 1953 at St. John Lutheran Church in Hanover. She and Carrol joined St. Paul Lutheran Church in Alta later that year, where she was active in the church and a faithful member. They resided on the home farm until April 2003 and moved into the town of Alta.

Shirley found great enjoyment in her church, spending time with her grandchildren, quilting, sewing, flowers and genealogy. She did some of her genealogy research in a month-long visit to Germany in 2001. Shirley had a great love for her family. She and Carrol celebrated their 50 years together with a family gathering in Monticello in June of this year. Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; two infant sons; and three brothers.

Shirley is survived by her husband, Carrol, of Alta; two daughters, Jorja Schofield and her husband Vern on Wintersville, Ohio, and Jodi Sanow and her husband Greg of Owasso, Okla.; two sons, Bruce Johnson and his fiance Kelli Hosch of Monticello and Gary Johnson and his wife Jo of Reinbeck; 15 grandchildren: Melanie and Valerie Schofield of Ohio, Casey, Aubrey, and Kate of Monticello, Jamie Dennis of Cedar Falls, Jennifer, Hannah, and Bailee Johnson of Reinbeck, Nathan Sanow of Florida, Laura, Danielle, and Brianna Sanow of Oklahoma, and Kelle and Eric Bartels of Marion; one great-grandson, Dominick Bartels; one sister, Maurine Hutton of Mesa, Ariz.; one brother, Kent Huseman of Anchorage, Alaska; one brother-in-law; several sisters-in-law; and many nieces and nephews.

Victor A. Durán

Victor A. Durán, age 32, of Storm Lake, died on Friday, April 2, 2004 at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, after suffering a fall at work.

Funeral mass for Mr. Durán was held Wednesday, April 7, 2004 at 3 p.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake, with Father Eriberto Da Costa officiating. Burial was in Storm Lake Cemetery under the direction of Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home.

Dan Offenburger

Dan Offenburger, 68, of Shenandoah died Thursday night, April 8, 2004, in an Omaha hospital. A wake will be held Sunday at 8 p.m. at Hackett Livingston Funeral Home in Shenandoah, with the funeral Monday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Shenandoah. He had suffered a heart attack while golfing March 26, 2004 and never regained consciousness.

Offenburger, who was retired, taught and coached at Fonda OLGC and later was athletic director at Creighton University in Omaha before becoming economic development director for Shenandoah.

Margie Peck

Margie Peck, age 76, of Alta, died Monday, April 5, 2004 at Buena Vista Manor in Storm Lake.

Christian services were held Thursday, April 8, 2004 at 10:30 a.m. at Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, with Father Bruce Lawler officiating.

Lowell Hansen

Lowell W. Hansen, age 84, of rural Alta, passed away Saturday, April 10, 2004, at Sioux Care Center in Sioux Rapids. A funeral service was held Tuesday, April 13, 2004, at 11 a.m. at Riverside Presbyterian Church in Linn Grove with Pastor Russ Westbrook and Reverend Doctor Robert Krause officiating. Burial was at Barnes Township Cemetery in Linn Grove. Sliefert-Asmus Funeral Home in Sioux Rapids was in charge of arrangements.

Lowell Wayne Hansen was born icon the son of Albert and Amy (Van Cleve) Hansen on December 28, 1919, in Alta. He attended school in rural Alta and graduated from Highview High School in 1937. After graduation, Lowell farmed in the rural Alta area.

Loren M. Ellrich

Graveside memorial servies for Loren M. Ellrich, 85, of Ne Orleands, La., formerly of Newell and Storm Lake, will be at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 18, 2004 at the Newell Cemetery with Pastor Greg Baskerville officiating. Military honors will be conducted by the Newell American Legion Post. Redig Funeral Home of Aurelia is in charge of arrangements.

Loren died June 27, 2002, in Meadowcrest Hospital in New Orleans, La.

Sylvia Swanson

Sylvia E. Swanson, age 96, of Albert City, passed away Thursday, May 27, 2004, at Pleasant View Home in Albert City. A funeral service was held Tuesday, June 1, 2004, at 10:30 a.m. at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Albert City with Reverend David Bernhardt officiating. Burial was at Fairfield Township Cemetery. The Sliefert-Asmus Funeral Home in Albert City was in charge of the arrangements.

Sylvia Elizabeth (Benna) Swanson was born icon to Axel and Esther Benna on September 9, 1907, at their home near Albert City. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church in Albert City. She attended country school until it was time for high school which she attended in Albert City, and graduated from there in 1925. After graduation, she worked in Minneapolis as a housemaid for some time, and later she worked as a cook in the Lutheran Children’s Home in Andover, Ill. After that she worked as a waitress and a baker in a café in Albert City.

Grace Jane Friedman

Grace Jane Friedman, 6-day-old daughter of Matt and Cindy Friedman, died Saturday, May 29 at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids from complications at birth. Services were held on Tuesday at 10 a.m. at St. Matthew Catholic Church by Rev. Mark Osterhaus. Burial was at Mount Calvary Cemetery in Cedar Rapids.

Survivors include her parents; grandparent, Chuck and Mary Kay Friedman of Cedar Rapids and Rex and Darlene Shearer of Storm Lake; great-grandparents, Ann Negro and Emmett Friedman, both of Cedar Rapids, Catherine Hamman of Kingsley and many aunts and uncles.

Tyler Turnquist

Tyler Jonathan Turnquist was born icon on May 28, 2004 to Jon and Carrie (Sieger) Turnquist in Storm Lake.

Tyler was a precious little boy who was loved by his family and friends. He especially loved getting hugs and kisses from his big sister, Brittany, and his parents. Tyler also had a fond affection for his grandparents and six girl cousins.

Eleanor Franzmeier

Eleanor Franzmeier, age 80, of Albert City, died Tuesday, July 20, 2004 at Pleasant View Nursing Home in Albert City.

Funeral services were held Friday, July 23, 2003 at 10:30 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church in rural Storm Lake, with Pastor Tom Egger officiating. Burial was in Zion Lutheran Cemetery. Sliefert-Asmus Funeral Home in Albert City was in charge of the arrangements.

Verma M. Bell

Verma M. Bell, age 96, of Storm Lake, died Thursday, July 29, 2004 after living a full life.

A memorial service was held Monday, August 2, 2004 at 10:30 a.m. at United Methodist Church’s Witter Chapel in Storm Lake. Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake assisted with arrangements.

Elva V. Frerichs

Elva Frerichs, age 81, of Newell, died July 29, 2004. Funeral services were Monday, August 2, 2004 at 2 p.m. at Nain Lutheran Church in Newell, with Reverend Paul Johnston officiating. Burial was in Newell Cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Newell.

Elva Virginia (Petersen) Frerichs, the daughter of Nels and Agnes (Andersen) Petersen was born icon September 8, 1922 on a farm in Sac County.

Elizabeth Harder

Elizabeth E. Harder, age 90, of Galva, died Thursday, October 7, 2004, at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, October 11, 2004, at Galva United Methodist Church Christensen-Huffman Funeral Homes. The Reverends Ron Johannsen and Ron Johnson officiated the service, with burial in Galva Township Cemetery East.

Mary Huegerich

Mary McClurg Huegerich, age 65, of Fonda, died Monday, November 29, 2004 at University Hospital in Omaha after a brief fight with cancer.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, December 2, 2004 at 10:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church in Fonda, with Father Thomas Hart as celebrant of the Mass of Christian Burial. Burial was in Mt. Zion Cemetery at Fonda under the direction of Mahaney Funeral Home in Fonda.
