Charles E. Brown

Charles E. Brown, 85, of Dongola, died at 7:20AM on Wednesday, August 08, 2012 at Saint Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau.

He was born on October 30, 1926 in Dongola the son of Charles Lester and Pearl (Eddleman) Brown. He married Mary Belle Moake on January 13, 1947. She survives him.

He served is country honorably in the US Navy. He worked in the Dongola area as a farmer. He was a member of the Operators Engineers Local 318 for over 45 years and the First Baptist Church of Dongola.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Belle; son, Wayne (Judy) Brown of Dongola; daughter, Vickie (Lonnie) Corzine of Dongola; 3 granddaughters, Becky (Chris) Brown of Geneseo, Sherri (Delbert) Freeman of Dongola and Jenny (Eric) Tellor of Dongola; 2 grandsons, Jeff (Kim) Brown of Dongola and Jerry Corzine of Dongola; 12 great-grandchildren, Hannah, Issac, Sarah and Samuel Ritter, Rachel, Josh and Gabrielle Freeman, Jacob, Steven and Micah Brown, Destiny and Cody Tellor; 1 sister, Mary Kula of Anna.

He is preceded in death by his parents, sisters, Anita Holshouser and June Taylor and infant brother.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, August 11, 2012 from 10-12PM at Crain Funeral Home in Dongola.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 11, 2012 at 12PM at Crain Funeral Home in Dongola with Rev. Paul Sadler officiating. Interment will follow in St. John’s cemetery with military honors by VFW Post 3455 and by Illinois National Guard Honor’s Team.

Ruby Boswell

Ruby Boswell, 83, of Anna, died Sunday, July 22, 2012 at 7:15 a.m. at Jonesboro Rehab and Care Center.

She was born on August 5, 1928 in Elsberry, Missouri the daughter of John and Sadie June (Dickerman) Martin. She married Stanley Boswell on January 2, 1979. He preceded her in death on July 19, 1986.

She was a member of Mt. Moriah Lutheran church.

Words from Ruby’s granddaughter Neely- Ruby had a full robust life every minute of every day. She enjoyed eating, cooking, dancing and socializing. If you knew her at all, you knew she enjoyed the 'good' life.

She is survived by her daughter, Tina (Mike) Otten of Anna; 1 granddaughter, Neely Otten of Anna; 1 grandson, Matthew Otten of Belleville; 1 sister, Dorothy Cook of Anna; 1 brother, John (Helen) Martin of Elsberry, Missouri; life-long friend, Kathryn Neely of Anna and very special companion, Tom Bacon.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and twin sister, Ruth Martin.

Visitation will be held on Friday, July 27, 2012 from 10-11:30 a.m. at Crain Funeral Home in Anna-Jonesboro.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 27, 2012 at 11:30 a.m. at Crain Funeral Home in Anna-Jonesboro with Bill Littrell officiating. Interment will be private at Anna City cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Jonesboro Healthcare or VFW-Ladies Auxiliary and will be accepted at the funeral home.

Charles W. Craig

Mr. Charles W. Craig, age 72 of Anna, died at 3:08 p.m. Wednesday, July 11, 2012 at the home of his daughter. He was born October 13, 1939 in Cobden, the son of Harold E. and Grace Armour Craig. He married Ramona Sue Gillespie on August 11, 1958 in Anna. She preceded him in death on April 9, 2008.

Charles is survived by one daughter, Denise Craig of Anna; two sisters, Dee (Charles) Langford of Cobden, Linda (Bob) Hill of Cobden; two brothers, Robert (Phyllis) Brimm of Dayton Ohio, Roger (Donna) Craig of Zion, IL; sisters and brothers in law, June & Bud Howard of Mt. Pleasant and Mickey & Becky Gillespie of Pawnee, IL; nieces and nephews, Janie, Jennifer, Jon, and Josh Meirndorf, Brian (Vonda) Hill and Family, Julie (Kurt) Marteney, Michael Gillespie, Melissa Jostes, Aden Jostes, Greg and Susie Ginsburg and Family, Susan and Karl Rademacher and Family, Craig and Anna Langford and Family, John and Sharon Mitchell and Family; other relatives and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Sue two sisters, Jean Phillips and Sue Rosenthal.

Charles was a member of the Countryside Christian Church near Vienna. He was a graduate of the AJCHS class of 1957.

Charles served as the Democrat Precinct Committeeman for the Stokes Precinct and was a Union County Democrat Chairman. He retired after 28 years at Tuck Tape. After his retirement he owned and operated his own taping company.

Funeral services for Mr. Charles W. Craig will be at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, July 15, 2012 at the Rendleman & Hileman Funeral Home in Anna with Rev. Bill Littrell officiating. Interment will be in the McGinnis cemetery. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday, July 14, 2012 at the Rendleman & Hileman Funeral Home in Anna. Dorothy Smith

Dorothy Smith, 77 of Tamms, died at 12:45AM, on Tuesday, July 31, 2012 at her home.

She was born on October 6, 1934 to Glenn and Mildred (Sheffer) Newell in Alexander County. She was united in marriage to Melvin E. Smith on June 14, 1952. He survives her.

Dorothy liked dogs and deer. She was employed as a cook for thirty-one years at Egyptian Community School where she was famous for her rolls. She then worked eleven years as hostess at Anna McDonalds, where she still went daily to visit with friends.

She is survived by her husband, Melvin; 1 daughter, Glenda (Michael) Hamilton of Henderson, KY; 1 son, Kenny (Gail) Smith of Tamms; 4 brothers, Raymond Newell of Jackson, MO, James (Carolyn) Newell of Tamms, David (Anna) Newell of Kelso, MO and Michael (Diann) Newell of Cape Girardeau, MO, 1 sister-in-law, Irene Pettit of Villa Ridge, nieces, nephews and other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Visitation was held on Wednesday, August 1, 2012 from 5-8PM at Crain Funeral Home in Tamms.

Services were held on Thursday, August 2, 2012 at 10AM at Crain Funeral Home in Tamms with Rev. Joe Aldridge officiating. Interment will follow at St. John’s cemetery.

Virginia L. Buckley

Virginia L. Buckley, 87, of Anna, IL formerly of Argenta, IL died Monday July 9, 2012 in the Union County Nursing Home in Anna, IL surrounded by her family.

Services to celebrate Virginia’s life will begin with a time of visitation on Friday, July 13, 2012 from 12:00 p.m. until 1:00 p.m. at Dawson & Wikoff Funeral Home, Mt. Zion. Following the visitation, Virginia will be laid to rest next to her husband Charles in Friends Creek cemetery, Argenta, IL with a committal service at 1:30 p.m., Friday afternoon. Memorials may be made in her memory to the Union County Nursing Home, Anna, IL.

Virginia was born November 14, 1925 in East Prairie, MO, the daughter of Raymond and Gertrude McKee. She enjoyed gardening, fishing, sporting events, family and friends. Virginia worked for Caterpillar Tractor Co. for many years and went on to work as the Office Manager for Buckley Brothers Painting until her retirement.

Virginia was a graduate of Argenta High School and had married Charles J. Buckley in 1943. He preceded her in death.

She is survived by her daughter: Patty Fombelle and her husband David of Cobden, IL; son: Mike Buckley of Mt. Zion, IL; sister: Elaine Mashburn of Maroa, IL; five grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, a niece and a nephew.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, sister: Charlotte Franklin; granddaughter: Kimberly; grandson: Aaron; and daughter-in-law: Jill.

The family is most grateful for the care given to Virginia by the Union County Nursing Home and staff.

Sophia Sharon Gosnell

Sophia Sharon Gosnell, age 75, of Murphysboro, died at 2:50 pm Tuesday, July 17, 2012 at her home.

She was born January 28, 1937 to James and Bonnie (Richmond) Matheny in Williamson County, Illinois. She married Eldon Gosnell, August 9, 1984, and he predeceased her on December 15, 2011.

Sophia graduated from the West Frankfort Community High School. She attended college at the Southern Illinois University and the San Jose University, receiving her teaching degree. Sophia worked in various schools in the Murphysboro area as an elementary school teacher. Sophia was a member of the Bridge Club, the Audobon Society, Arbor Day Foundation and the Red Hat Ladies.

She is survived by 1 son, Rolland (Sandra) Bridges of Cobden, and 1 daughter, Bonnie (Jon) Ruby of Palm Harbor, Florida; 4 grandsons, Logan Ruby of Palm Harbor, FL, Rolland Bridges, V of Cobden, Roscoe Bridges of Cobden, and Eric Greer of LA; 2 granddaughters, Hannah Ruby of Palm Harbor, FL Cassandra (Justin) Doiel of Cobden, and Tory Greer of OK; 1 nephew, Richard Jorgenson of Elkville, IL, other relatives and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents and her brother, Keith Matheny.

Visitation was Saturday, July 21, 2012 at 11:00 am to the hour of service at Crain Pleasant Grove Murdale Funeral Home.

Funeral Services for Sophia Sharon Gosnell were at 1:00 pm on Saturday, July 21, 2012 at the funeral home with Rev. Jim Grant officiating.

Memorial Contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society, Sallie Logan Public Library and/or VNA Tip Hospice. Memorials will be accepted at the funeral home.

Arrangements are by Crain Pleasant Grove Murdale Funeral Home.

Richard L. McClain

Richard L. McClain, age 84 of Anna, died 6:15 p.m. Tuesday, May 22, 2012 at Manor Grove Care in Kirkwood, Missouri after a 20 month long battle with lymphoma. Richard was born on November 22, 1927 in Water Valley, Ms, the son of Frank and Elizabeth (Smith) McClain. He married Jo Brashears on September 12, 1953. She preceded him in death in 1981.

Richard spent his youth in Paducah, Kentucky and graduated from Murray State University with a Master’s degree in Secondary Education. He was a WWII military veteran in the United States Army. He moved to Anna in 1951 and began a long teaching career, ending at the Anna-Jonesboro Community High School where he taught business and, in his early years, coached football. He was an avid outdoorsman and nature buff who did his best to visit every national park west of the Mississippi River. Richard was also a train enthusiast who loved the pace of a train as it gave him the opportunity to see the country side at 'his speed'.

Richard is survived by two children, Carol McClain of St. Louis, MO and Keith (Juli) McClain of Murray, KY; two granddaughters, Stephanie Jo and Elizabeth Suzanne McClain, both of Murray, KY; his loyal companion and best friend, Winston, a Yorkshire terrier.

Private burial services will be held at the Anna cemetery followed by a family memorial service at the Kentucky Lake at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to stjude.org/donate, with acknowledgments made to Carol McClain at 109 Parkland Avenue, St. Louis, MO 63122. Hobart Rendleman Clutts

Mr. Hobart Rendleman Clutts, age 90 of Cobden, passed away at 8:30 a.m., Monday, May 7, 2012 at his home on Skyline Drive in Cobden. He was born November 22, 1921 in Cobden, the son of Hobart William and Mary Rendleman Clutts. He married Geraldine Verble on October 13, 1943 in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. She preceded him in death on June 26, 2007.

Hobart is survived by one daughter, Sheleigh (Bill) Belongy of Clewiston, Florida; one son, Rodney (Kelli) Clutts of Anna; six grandchildren, Brett Witthoft of Anna; Erin (Michael) Pearson of Mone di Procida, Italy; Tyler (Kasey) Clutts of Jonesboro; Emily (Mistee) Clutts of Cypress, Stephanie (Dan) Stoelb of Versailles, Kentucky; Rachel Clutts of Cobden; three great grandchildren, Brennan and Eli Pearson of Mone di Procida, Italy, Maggie Clutts of Jonesboro; twelve nieces and nephews; family friend, Susan Steck of Cobden; other relatives and many friends. Hobart was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Geraldine Clutts; three siblings, Charles Lee Clutts, Herbert Walter Clutts, and Margaret Carolyn Clutts Flamm.

The family would like to give thanks to his caregivers for the past two years, Alice Arnaud, Janet Dabbs & Kim Richardson.

Hobart was known to many as H.R. or Junior. He lived his entire life in Cobden and was a business man and leader in the community. After graduating from Cobden High School in 1939, H.R. was drafted into the Army in 1941. When he finished his tour of duty in Europe with the 301st Battalion, he was commissioned Captain and awarded the Silver star for leadership and bravery. He returned home and attended Normal University (SIU) and became partner in the fruit and vegetable brokerage business, known as J.R. Clutts & Son. He retired from the business at the age of 62.

During his lifetime, H.R. had a variety of interests including civic service. He served on the board of directors at the First National Bank of Cobden, the Cobden School Board #17. He was a member and past commander of the Cobden American Legion Post #259. He was a member of the Union County Country Club.

Some of his hobbies and activities included fishing, hunting, growing fruits and vegetables. He especially loved golfing. In recent years he enjoyed bird watching and feeding and outdoor work.

Funeral services for Mr. Hobart Rendleman Clutts will be at 11:00 Thursday, May 10, 2012 at the Rendleman & Hileman Funeral Home in Cobden with Rev. Clifford Heil officiating. Interment will be in the Anna City cemetery. Military honors will be conducted by the Carroll P. Foster Post #3455 of the V.F.W. in Anna and the Military Funeral Honors Team of Marion. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, May 9, 2012 at the Rendleman & Hileman Funeral Home in Cobden. Memorial contributions may be made to Bald Knob Cross or Hospice of Southern Illinois. Envelopes will be available at the Rendleman & Hileman Funeral Home in Cobden and Anna.

Frances Leota (Frankie) Howell

Frances Leota (Frankie) Howell, 77, of Cobden, passed away at 6:05 p.m. on Monday, April 30, 2012 surrounded by her family at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale, Carbondale.

She was born on January 17, 1935 to Hiram Eston Reeves and Frances Helen (Parks) in Carbondale.

Frankie married Richard Dean Howell on June 19, 1952 in Carbondale. He survives.

Other survivors include two sons Clifton Howell and his significant other Tammy Morris of Cobden and Thomas and his wife, Karen Howell of Murphysboro; two daughters Susan and her husband Jeff Mason of DuQuoin, Lisa and her husband Mark Jones of Carbondale; one brother Roy Reeves of Desert Hot Springs, CA; eleven grandchildren, Anthony and his wife Diana, Christopher, Richard, Margaret, S. Kain, Kelly, and Jesse Howell, Jeffrey and his fiancé Tracie and Theresa Mason, Rebecca and her husband David Burnam, and Stephanie Jones; seven great-grandchildren, Makenzie, Mitchell, Matthew, Brooke, Alayna Sue, Brayden and Jewel; former daughter-in-law Kim Howell of Cobden; many nieces, nephews and other extended family members.

She is preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Roscoe Reeves; two sisters, Anna Mae Naegele and Essie Raines; and her son, Steven L Howell on June 22, 2004.

Frankie was a member of St Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Carbondale and S.I. Unit of Airstream Association, #039 for 31 years. She also ran her own daycare 'Frankies Day Care' out of her home for 25 years until she retired in 1986. She touched the lives and hearts of many families and children.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 5, 2012 at St Francis Xavier Catholic Church with Father Robert Flannery officiating. Friends may call at the Meredith Funeral Home from 5:00 p.m. til 8:00 p.m. on Friday, May 4, 2012. Interment will be held after church services, at Murdale Gardens of Memory in Murphysboro. Memorials may be made to Parkinsons or TIP Hospice. Envelopes will be provided at the funeral home.

Frankie enjoyed the love of her family, traveling, camping and gardening.

Meredith Funeral Home of Carbondale is assisting the family with the arrangements.
