Dorothy L. Norris

Dorothy L. Norris, 90, of rural Plymouth, passed away at 7:35 p.m. Sunday, December 13, 1998, at Elms Nursing Home in Macomb.

Born November 30, 1908, in Macomb to John G. and Mabel Ingram Baker, she married Donald I. Norris on April 11, 1931, in Keokuk, Iowa. He passed away October 11, 1995.

Two sisters and two brothers also preceded her in death.

Surviving are two sons, James of Tennessee, IL, and Wayne of Plymouth; one daughter, Mrs. Blondell (Barbara) Hoyt of Macomb; two brothers, Harlan Baker of Good Hope and John Baker of Roseville; 10 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

She owned and operated Norris Florist in Macomb and also had been a floral designer for Bonham and Arling Florist in Macomb. She taught school in New Philadelphia after World War II. She attended Western Illinois College.

She was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Macomb and Rebekah Lodge. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star Good Hope Chapter for 72 years.

Services were held at 10:00 Thursday, December 16, at Jones Mortuary, Colchester, with the Rev. Mark Myers officiating. Burial was in Oakwood cemetery, Macomb.

Memorials may be made to Hillsgrove United Methodist Church in rural Tennessee or Wesley United Methodist Church.

Vilasco O. Sorrells 12/17/1998

Vilasco O. Sorrells, 83, 404 East Jared Street, Abingdon, passed away at 7:50 p.m. Tuesday, December 8, 1998, at OSF St. Mary Medical Center in Galesburg. Born March 25, 1915 near Littleton, IL, the son of John and Amy Dugger Sorrells, he married Pauline Mercer on March 13, 1939 in Palmyra, MO. She survives. Also surviving are one son, Giles Sorrells of Dunlap, IL; one daughter, Loretta Peterson, Avon; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Lena Larson of Berwick and Vivian Ruhl Millard, Abingdon. He was preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters. He farmed near Abingdon for 50 years retiring in 1972. He was a member of Coal creek Bible Church. Services were held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, December 12, at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Chapel in Abingdon with the Rev. Mike Barr officiating. Burial was in Abingdon cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Coal Creek Bible Church or International Tremor Foundation.

Marian R. Lock 12/17/1998

Marian R. Lock, 77, Avon, passed away at 9:45 a.m. Friday, December 11, 1998, at OSF Saint Francis Medical center in Peoria. Born September 4, 1921, in Fairview to T. Chellis and Louise Negley Taylor, she married J. Hobart Lock Jr. on November 29, 1943, in Canton. He survives. Also surviving are two sons, Terry of Lincoln and James of Avon; one daughter, Mrs. Donald (Carolyn) Moffitt of Knoxville; ten grandchildren and two brothers, Howard and Gene, both of Canton. She attended Eureka College. She and her husband were farmers near Avon. She was a member of the Prairie City Presbyterian Church, where she taught Sunday school for many years, and was a member of the choir and missionary society. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Avon Unit of Fulton County Homemakers Extension Association. Services were held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, December 16, at her church with the Rev. Kurt Ayers officiating. Burial was in the Avon cemetery. Corman Memorial Home, Avon, was in charge of arrangements. Pallbearers were Justin Moffitt, Jeremy Lock, Jim Lock, Glenn Potter, John Potter, and Jason McKay. Memorials may be made to her church, the American Red Cross, Western Illinois Chapter; or the Avon Ambulance Service.

Sandra K. Andrews

Sandra K. Andrews, age 53, of 300 North Jefferson Street, Apt. 204, Abingdon, Illinois, died at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, December 26, 1998 at OSF St. Mary Medical Center, Galesburg.

She was born August 6, 1945 in Spencer, Iowa, the daughter of Louis Thomas and Lorna Elizabeth Berg Krall. Her first marriage was to Larry Rhinehart in May of 1964. They were divorced. Her second marriage was to Terry Andrews on August 1, 1980. They were also divorced.

Survivors include one son Todd L. Rhinehart, Abingdon; two step sons, Troy and Todd Andrews, both of Abingdon; one brother, Michael W. Krall, Panama City, Florida; one sister, Karen Martin, Fairview, Illinois; one grandson, Dalton Parrish, five step grandchildren and one nephew.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one son, Ricky Rhinehart and one brother-in-law.

She had lived in the Abingdon area most of her life and graduated from Abingdon High School in 1963. She worked as a secretary in the personnel Department at Briggs Manufacturing in Abingdon for 18 years. She was a member of Abingdon Christian Church and has been very active in the Abingdon Booster Club.

Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, at Abingdon Christian Church with Reverend Raymond McLaren officiating. Burial was in the Abingdon cemetery.

A memorial fund will be established. Hinchliff-Pearson-West Chapel, Abingdon, was in charge of the arrangements.

Ernest Johnson

Ernest E. Johnson, age 87, of Berwick, Illinois, died at 2:06 am. Sunday, December 27, 1998, at Avon Nursing Home in Avon.

Born October 7, 1911, in Berwick to Emil and Sophia Swanson Johnson, he married Jewel Turner on March 2, 1935, in Galesburg. She survives.

Also surviving are two sons, Ernest of Roseville and Gary of Avon; one daughter, Linda Carlberg of Roseville; one sister, Inez Peterson of Galva; 10 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

His parents, two brothers and six sisters preceded her in death.

He and his wife farmed in the Berwick area.

He was a member of Berwick Baptist Church, where he served as past deacon and elder. He served on the Roseville School Board. He was a 50-year member of Roseville Masonic Lodge 519, AF& AM. He established the Boy Scout Troop in Berwick in 1949.

Graveside services were held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, December 29, at Berwick cemetery. The Reverend Jay Cowell officiated. Corman Memorial Home in Roseville was in charge of the arrangements.

Memorials may be made to his church or to Avon Nursing Home.

Edwin E. Day

Edwin E. 'Ed' Day, age 72, of 614 Park Place, Monmouth, died at 8:31 p.m. Wednesday December 23, 1998 in Cottage Hospital.

He was born September 26, 1926, in Swan Creek, the son of Albert Wayne and Iva Edith Hale Day.

He married Beatrice Louise Simpson on November 5, 1971, in Monmouth.

Surviving are his wife, Monmouth; four sons, Edward E. Sellers, Charlotte, N. C., Bill Smith, Gladstone, Bruce L. Smith, Biggsville; and Brian H. Smith, Kirkwood; two daughters, Donna Carson, Colchester, and Diana Keever, Kirkwood; two brothers, Ernest Day, Abingdon and Dr. A. J. Day, Watseka; two sisters, Marjorie Murphy, Grays Lake and Jesse Shook, Waukegan; eight grandchildren, and one great-grandson.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, one sister and one nephew.

He attended Monmouth High School and entered the Navy at the age of 15 and served for 26 years, including four years in the Navy Reserve. He was a veteran of World War II and Korean Conflict.

Mr. Day was employed for six years with Wells Pet food Company, seven years at Jamieson Center, and for the past nine years at the front desk of St. Mary’s Square, Galesburg. He was a life member of both the Monmouth Veterans of Foreign War 2301 and Monmouth American Legion Post 136.

Funeral was held at 1 p.m., Tuesday, December 29 in Turnbull Funeral Home, Monmouth with Rev. Jerry Kilgore officiating.

Burial was in Biggsville cemetery. Memorials may be made to his great-grandson’s education fund.

Viola Mae 'Billie' Lindsey

Viola Mae 'Billie' Lindsey, age 71, of R. Rt. Abingdon, Illinois, died at 4:10 p.m. Sunday, December 27, 1998 at Cottage Hospital, Galesburg.

She was born November 10, 1927 in Abingdon the daughter of James and Melissa Melvin Ross. She married J. Lavern Lindsey on November 25, 1944 in Galesburg. He survives.

Other survivors include two daughters, Patty Simpson, Springfield, Illinois and Peggy Kennett, Abingdon; one sister, Bertha Warren, Abingdon; eight grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

She grew up in Marietta, Illinois and had lived in Abingdon most of her married life. She was a homemaker. She was baptized in the Assembly of God Church, Abingdon, Illinois.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Wednesday December 30 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Chapel, Abingdon. Rev. Richard Ginther offiiated. Burial was in Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens, Galesburg, Illinois.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.

Theodore L. Tinkham

Theodore L. 'Ted' Tinkham, 19 of 5129 Roberts Road, Peoria Heights, Illinois, died at 11:05 p.m. Friday December 18, 1998 in a traffic accident at 7924 Farmington Road, Peoria.

He was born April 12, 1979, in Normal, the son of Tyrone and Frances Smith Tinkham.

Surviving are his father, in Illinois; his mother, Peoria Heights; two brothers, Christopher Tinkham, Peoria and Matthew Tinkham, Peoria Heights; his grandparents, Al and Marilyn Smith, Galesburg, and Ted and Dora Tinkham, Cameron, and several aunts and uncles, and one nephew.

He worked in the stockroom at Famous Barr department store, Peoria. He was a member of First Christian Church, Peoria.

Cremation rites were accorded. The funeral services were held at Wright & Salmon Mortuary, Peoria, with Rev. William Petterson officiating. Internment will be at a later date in Swan Lake Memory Gardens, Peoria.

Memorials may be made to the March of Dimes.

Mae Fox 12/17/1998

Mae Fox, age 95, of 606 North Washington Street, Abingdon, Illinois, died at 4:40 a.m. Sunday, December 13, 1998 at the Rosewood Health Care Center, Galesburg. She was born May 29, 1903 in New Haven, Kentucky, the daughter of Robert D. and Mary S. Fogle Peak. She married Philip P. Fox on September 25, 1932 in Abingdon, Illinois. He preceded her in death on September 21, 1991. She is survived by two sons, Robert Fox, of Portland, Oregon and John Fox, Abingdon; one sister, Cecelia Melton, Galesburg, ten grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two daughters, Phyllis Fox on June 17, 1998, and Nora K. Fox; one sister and five brothers. She grew up in New Haven, Kentucky and later lived in St. Augustine, Illinois. She had lived in Abingdon since 1929. She had worked at the former Blue Bell Manufacturing Company. She and her husband operated a gas station, grocery store and Maid-Rite Sandwich Shop. She had also worked at the Ben Franklin Store and last worked at the former Russ’ Grocery Store in Abingdon. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the Altar and Rosary Society of the Church. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Father Oman, officiating. Burial was in the Abingdon cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Sacred Heart Catholic Church or Abingdon Public Schools Foundation.

Dale E. Gallehue 12/17/1998

Dale E. Gallehue, 86, Bushnell, passed away at 11:50 a.m. Friday, December 11, 1998, at Galesburg Cottage Hospital. Born February 17, 1912, in McDonough County to Elmer and Iva Ebert Gallehue, he married Reta Gale Buchen on June 29, 1939, in St. Augustine. She survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Sam (Jill) Schneider and Judy Gummersheimer, both of Champaign; four grandchildren; two great grandchildren and two sisters, Berniece Huffman of Bushnell and Mary Ann Sly of Milan. One grandson preceded him in death. A World War II Navy veteran, he was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1422. He was a farmer near Bushnell for 32 years and a member of the McDonough County Farm Bureau. He was a clerk for Mound Township board of trustees and a member of McDonough County Health Improvement Association. He was a member of St. Bernard’s Catholic Church, where services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, with the Rev. David Kurt officiating. A prayer service was held at Martin-Hollis Funeral Home on Sunday at 6 p.m. Burial was in the Bushnell cemetery. Memorials may be made to Bushnell Rescue Squad or his church.

Lorraine Emma Sherman 12/17/1998

Lorraine Emma Sherman, 2428 Peninsula Drive, Daytona Beach, Florida, passed away at 5:21 p.m., Tuesday, December 8, 1998 at her home. Born January 26, 1903 in Elba Township, Knox County, the daughter of Gotlob and Emma Greiner Housman, she married Lewis William Sherman on September 13, 1920 in Morrison, MN. He passed away December 26, 1981. Surviving are two sons, Howard Sherman of Daytona Beach, FL and Richard 'Dick' Sherman of Abingdon; two daughters, Elizabeth 'Betty' Way of Abingdon and Ruth Ann Bryan of Ellisville; 20 grandchildren; 52 great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Esther Harris of Macomb and Ruth Hills of Farmington. Two sons, William Lewis Sherman, who died in a plane crash in England during World War II and Bernard Sherman, also preceded her in death. She had lived in the Knox County area for many years where she and her husband farmed. She later moved to Abingdon and then to Daytona Beach in the early 1970’s. She attended Yates City High School. She was a member of the Abingdon United Methodist Church, a 50-year member of American Legion Post 381 Auxiliary, and a Gold Star Mother. She was employed for many years at the former Blue Bell Manufacturing Co. in Abingdon. Cremation rites were accorded. A Memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, December 19, 1998 at the Abingdon United Methodist Church. Hinchliff-Pearson-West Chapel in Abingdon was in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.

Gladys 'Kirk' Wiss 12/17/1998

Gladys 'Kirk' Wiss, 77, died at 4:30 a.m., Saturday, December 12, in Butterfield Retirement Village, Fayetteville, Arkansas. She was born in Roseville, May 11, 1921, the daughter of Hugh and Cora Meacham Kirkpatrick. She married Frank Wiss, September 28, 1945 in Champaign, who passed away August 3, 1979. She leaves a son, Dick Wiss of Boulder, Colorado; two daughters, Peg Morrison of Pettigrew, Arkansas, and Patricia Wiss of Cedar Falls, Iowa; a brother, George Kirkpatrick of Syracuse, New York; a sister, Dorothy Stoneburner of Roseville; and a granddaughter, Molly Davis. A granddaughter, Sara Davis and her parents also preceded her in death. A graduate of Roseville High School and the University of Illinois, she taught school in Pana, Illinois and was a volunteer at the Pana Hospital. Cremation was accorded and interment of ashes will be Friday December 18 at Pana. The family requests that memorials be made to the Pana Community Hospital, Pana, Illinois.

Ruth W. Dunbar 12/17/1998

Ruth W. Dunbar, age 86, of 1013 N. Farnham Street, Galesburg, died at 12:30 p.m. Sunday, December 13, 1998, in Galesburg Cottage Hospital. She was born April 14, 1912, in Swan Creek, the daughter of Joseph Andrew and Sarah Ellen Gray Strode. She married Orville N. Dunbar on August 24, 1939, in Abingdon. He died December 17, 1987. Surviving are one daughter, Cheryl Johnson, Victoria; two sisters, Edith Wheeler, Springfield, and Bess Payne, Bushnell; four grandsons, and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters. She was reared in the Bushnell area, and lived in Galesburg for more than 50 years. She was a homemaker. She was a member of First Church of the Open Bible, and was a former member of the Covenant Church. Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m., Thursday in Hinchliff-Pearson-West Chapel, Galesburg, with the Rev. Jeff Peterson officiating. Visitation will be one hour before the services at the funeral home. Burial will be in Henderson cemetery. Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.

Vincent F. Klauer

Vincent F. Klauer, Sr., age 95 1/2, of Rock Island, Illinois, died Friday, November 27, 1998 in his sleep. He was born June 28, 1903 in Davenport, Iowa, the son of Frank and Theresa Klauer. He married Antoinette Morlock in Rock Island on June 30, 1927. She preceded him in death on November 14, 1983. He was also preceded in death by one son, Rev. Arnold Klauer and four grandchildren. Survivors include three daughters, Theresa DeCrane, Abingdon and Janet Norman and Cecilia Kargl, both of the Quad City area; six sons, Vincent Jr., Richard, Clarence, William, David and Bernard all of the Quad City area, 34 grandchildren and 39 great grandchildren. He worked as a Machinist Pattern Maker in Davenport, retiring from there in 1966. Services were held Tuesday, December 1 at St. Mary Catholic Church, Rock Island. Burial was in Calvary cemetery, Rock Island. Among those attending his funeral were his son-in-law and daughter, Don and Theresa DeCrane, Abingdon, and grandchildren, Dan and Becky DeCrane and family of Manito, Thomas and Irita DeCrane and family, Moline and Christine Miecznikowski and twins.
