Matthew Wilson

Matthew Wilson, 56, Prairie City, passed away at 5:32 a.m. Friday, December 4, 1998, at St. Mary Medical Center in Galesburg. Born December 25, 1941, in Topeka, KS, to Ross and Marceline C. Mack Wilson, he married Gloria Carlson on December 31, 1987, in Avon. She survives. Also surviving are one son, Matthew of Centralia; two daughters, Penny Wilson of Aurora and Teresa Leonard of Arkansas; three stepdaughters, Sandy Frakes and Julie Sloan, both of Avon, and Pam Busly of Aurora; one brother, Wayne of Cameron; two sisters, Martha Courson and Janice Johnson, both of Abingdon; several grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. One brother, one sister, and one daughter preceded him in death. He worked for the Burlington Northern-Santa Fe Railroad for 38 years. He was a member of the BMWE Union Local 783. An Army veteran, he was a member of Abingdon American Legion. Services were at 10 a.m. Monday at Corman Memorial Home, Avon with the Rev. Rick Kerr officiating. Burial was in Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens, Galesburg.

David L. Friend

Onalaska, Wis. — David L. Friend, 60, Onalaska, Wisconsin, died Monday, November 30, 1998 at his home. He was born June 19, 1938, in Galesburg, the son of William and Sophia (Carlson) Friend. He married Sally Geissler on December 26, 1966, in Galesburg. Surviving are his wife; one son, Brian Friend, St. Paul, Minnesota; one daughter, Heather Nixon, Naples Florida; four children from a previous marriage, David D. Friend, William Friend and Robert Friend, all of Abingdon; and Deborah Tabb, Abingdon; one brother, Jerry Friend, Galesburg; two sisters, Drusilla Moran, Galesburg, and Sharon Shipplett, Abingdon. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister. He was a 28 year veteran of the Navy. He then worked for the Continuing Education Department at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse for 10 yeas, retiring in 1995. Funeral services were held at Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home, Onalaska, Wisconsin, with Rev. Mark E. Hart officiating. Burial was in Onalaska cemetery, where military rites were accorded. Memorials may be made to Gundersen Lutheran Medical Foundation for the dialysis unit.

F. Lucille Newell

F. Lucille Newell, 81, of 900 E. Jefferson St., Macomb, and formerly of Blandinsville, died at 12:15 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 25, 1999, in the Heartland Health Care Center at Macomb. She was born on April 20, 1918, in rural Blandinsville, a daughter of Charles and Portia Campbell Hodges. She married Hugh Newell on April 19, 1936, in Blandinsville. Survivors include husband Hugh; daughter Mrs. Paul (Donna) Augustyn of Marengo, Wis.; son Courtney Newell of Oracle, Ariz.; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; brother Rusty Hodges of Macomb; sisters Myra Robinson of Morton, Josephine Deems of Blandinsville, Charlene Downey of Macomb, and Claudia McGrann of Raleigh, N.C. She was preceded in death by her parents, daughter Myra Sue Newell, and three brothers Herbert, Bill and Jim Hodges. Mrs. Newell lived most of her life in the Blandinsville area, and had moved to Macomb in 1998. She worked at J.C. Penneys for 10 years, and then sold Tupperware for 20 years. She was a member of the First Christian Church in Blandinsville and the Jolly Homemakers Club. Services were held Saturday in First Christian Church in Blandinsville, with John Simmons and Ed Gund officiating. Burial was in Glade City cemetery in Blandinsville. Memorials may be made to the First Christian Church in Blandinsville or the donors choice. Clugston-Tibbitts Funeral Home in Blandinsville is in charge of the arrangements.

Ethel C. Boone Small

Ethel C. Boone Small, 85, Abingdon, passed away Tuesday, December 8, 1998 at 12:05 a.m. at the Care Center of Abingdon. She was born June 22, 1913 in LaHarpe, IL, the daughter of Edgar & Anna Helmers Buhl. She married Virgil Boone on January 30, 1932 in Dallas City, Illinois. He passed away March 23, 1975. She later married Andrew Small on September 22, 1979. He also preceded her in death. She is survived by four sons, Richard Boone of Abingdon, Edward Boone of London Mills, Terry Boone of Wataga, and Jerry Boone of Cullium, AL; 10 grandchildren; two step-grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Besides her husbands, she was preceded in death by two brothers, John and Sheldon Buhl, one granddaughter, one great-granddaughter and her parents. Mrs. Small was a member of Our Lord’s Chapel in Galesburg. She formerly lived in LaHarpe, Roseville and Galesburg. while in LaHarpe she attended the LaHarpe United Methodist Church. She had worked at St. Mary’s Hospital in Galesburg and at the Galesburg Clinic. She retired in 1978. Funeral services were held Friday, December 11, 1998, at 2:00 p.m. at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe, Illinois with Pastor Don Lundquist officiating. Burial was in the LaHarpe cemetery. Memorials may be made to the American cancer Society or to Alzheimers Research.

Marian F. Lewis

Marian F. Lewis, 82, 550 East Carl Sandburg Drive, Galesburg, passed away at 3:20 p.m. Thursday, December 3, 1998 at Seminary Manor in Galesburg. She was born May 14, 1916, in Avon the daughter of Drue and Ada Eathington Foster. She married Stanley Lewis on March 21, 1942 in Palmyra, MO. He survives. Surviving in addition to her husband are two sons, John Lewis of Peoria and Sid Lewis of Abingdon; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Thelma B. King, Peoria and Jane Reeves of Mesa, AZ. He was preceded in death by one grandchild and one brother. She grew up in Avon where she graduated from Avon High School in 1934. She attended Western Illinois Teachers College in Macomb. She had lived in Galesburg since 1974 and lived in Abingdon prior to that. She was a homemaker and previously worked as a telephone operator in Avon, at the Abingdon Argus Newspaper and later worked as a Dental Assistant for Dr. Gordon in Avon. She was a member of First Congregational Church in Abingdon and the Women’s Fellowship of the church. She was a charter member the Abingdon Junior Women’s Club. She also helped organize the first Kindergarten Class which was held at John Mosser Public Library in Abingdon. Services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, December 8, at the Hinchliff-Pearson-West Chapel in Abingdon with the Rev. Jon Prain officiating. Burial was in Abingdon cemetery. Memorials may be made to the First Congregational Church.

Ferne Dakin

Ferne Dakin, 101, formerly of Roseville, passed away at 8:35 p.m., Friday, December 4, 1998, at Heartland Health Care Center, Macomb. She was born October 4, 1897, in Point Pleasant Township, Warren County, the daughter of Albert Burrus and Minnie Frances VanKirk Reed. She married Edgar Dakin on May 23, 1922, in Monmouth. He passed away January 27, 1972. Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Kenneth (Betty) Leefers, Mrs. Nicholas (Doris) Hennenfent and Mrs. Lloyd (Mary) Miller, all of Macomb; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild and one sister, Frances Allison of Booneville, MO. She attended Western Illinois State Teachers College and then taught in rural schools in Warren County. She was a member of Roseville United Methodist Church. Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, December 7, in Roseville cemetery, with the Rev. Maurice Midgley, pastor of the Roseville United Methodist Church officiating. Corman Memorial Home, Roseville was in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be made to Roseville United Methodist Church.

Lloyd T. Williamson

Lloyd T. Williamson, 76, London Mills, passed away at 1:14 a.m. Monday, November 30, 1998, at Galesburg Cottage Hospital in Galesburg. Born December 22, 1921, in Northwood, Iowa, to Ira J. and Bertha E. Rule Williamson, he married Arnita Peterson on June 22, 1941. She survives. Also surviving are one son, Danny of London Mills; two daughters, Joyce Naslund of Maquon and Judy Libby of Chicago; one brother, John of Avon; one sister, Helen Zimmerman of Dahinda; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Four sisters and two brothers preceded him in death. A World War II veteran, he was a member of London Mills American Legion Post 470 and was a life member of Canton Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1984. He farmed in rural London Mills. A member of United Mine Workers of America, he also worked at Midland Coal co. for 41 years. He was a past member of London Mills Masonic Lodge. Services were held Thursday, December 3, at the Coal Creek Bible Church, London Mills with the Rev. Mike Barr officiating. Burial was in East Midway cemetery, where military rites were conducted by his VFW post. Corman Memorial Home, London Mills, was in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be made to London Mills Fire & Ambulance Service.

C. Grayson Crook

Grayson Crook of Fort Collins died Monday at Poudre Valley Hospital. He was 86. A memorial service was held Saturday at Warren-Bohlender Funeral Chapel with Rev. Paul Moyer officiating. Interment of remains followed. Grayson Crook was born August 11, 1912, in Fort Morgan, the son of Orion Scott Crook and Ida Grayson Crook. His only brother, Glenn, died in childhood of scarlet fever. He graduated from Weldona High School in 1929 and earned a bachelor’s degree in animal science from Colorado A&M;, now Colorado State University, in 1934. While in college he was a varsity letterman in baseball and track, a member of Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity and a member of the college livestock judging team. He also was a member of Alpha Tau Alpha scholastic honor society. In June 1935, he married Lucile Maxine Edmondson of Berthoud. The couple had two sons, Arthur Grayson, who died in April 1996 and Robert Scott of Fort Collins, who survives. Mr. Crook taught vocational agriculture, math and coached at both Johnstown and Timnath high schools in the late 1930’s In 1941, the family moved to Trinidad, where Mr. Crook worked for the Soil Conservation Service, a branch of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Following the death of his father in 1946, the family moved to the Crook homestead at Weldona, where they farmed until 1971, when Grayson and Lucile moved to Fort Collins. In 1970’s and early ‘80s, he sold standby power generators for the Winpower Corp, of Newton, Iowa, covering a territory of Colorado, Wyoming and Nebraska. Following his wife’s death in 1981, Grayson married Mary Ellen Reese of Abingdon, Illinois, who survives him. They met in Fort Collins and were married September 12, 1982.The couple were staunch boosters of CSU athletics and held season tickets for football and basketball for years. They traveled the nation in support of CSU teams and were long time members of the Ram Booster Club. Mr. Crook was an avid hunter and outdoorsman, gaining renown as an expert fly fisherman on the Poudre River. He was a past member of Oasis Lodge No. 67, Ancient Free & Accepted Masons in Fort Morgan; was a member of the Shriners; and attained Yorkrite and Scottish rite Degrees. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Fort Collins Alzheimer’s Association, 415 Peterson St. Fort Collins Colorado 80521.

Leona I. 'Sis' Curtis

Leona I. 'Sis' Curtis, 68, of 516 East Jackson, Macomb, passed away at 4:11 p.m. Sunday, December 6, 1998 at McDonough District Hospital in Macomb. She was born on May 12, 1930 in the Canton area to Paul and Gladys Smith Hickenbottom. She married Dana M. 'Curly' Curtis on June 10, 1947 in Macomb. He survives. Also surviving are one step-son, Gary (Karen) Flynn of Colchester; three brothers, Eugene (Joan) Hickenbottom of Bushnell, Carroll (Sandy) Hickenbottom of Dallas City, and Larry (Beverly) Hickenbottom of Carthage; two step-grandchildren, Mrs. Chris (Geri) Schneider of Geneseo and Kelly (Shellie) Flynn of Colchester; four step great-grandchildren, Eric Blackert of Geneseo and Seth, Stefan, and Sawyer Flynn of Colchester; one sister-in law, Mrs. Cleo (Melba) Peterson of Augusta, and several nieces and nephews. Sis lived in Schuyler County in her early years for eleven years, then Warren County for twenty two years, and then moved to McDonough County and retired to Macomb in 1984. She worked on the family farm with her husband. She was a member of the Ramblin’ Roses Square Dance Club in Roseville and was active at the YMCA Senior Center in Macomb. Services were held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, December 9, 1998 at the Clugston-Tibbitts Funeral Home in Macomb with Reverend Loren Curtis officiating. Burial was in the Brooklyn cemetery in Brooklyn, Illinois. Memorials may be made to either the Roseville Ambulance Service or the Augusta Assembly of God Church Building Fund.

Carl Max Smith

Carl Max Smith, age 69, of 56 Herring Avenue, Galesburg, Illinois, died at 4:42 p.m. Thursday, November 26, 1998 at OSF St. Mary Medical Center emergency room, Galesburg. He was born March 26, 1929 at Astoria, Illinois, the son of Carl Nathan and Mattie Leota Smith. He married Theresa Peltier in Conn. in 1951. They were divorced. Surviving are his father, Carl N. Smith, Galesburg; two sons Rodney L. Smith, Galesburg and Roger A. Smith, Kent, Washington; one brother Loren W. Smith, East Peoria, three sisters, Margery Albin, Galesburg, Maxine Homer, Abingdon and Donna Moore, Peoria, Illinois; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his mother and one brother. He had lived in Galesburg and Abingdon areas most of his life. He retired from Butler Manufacturing Company in Galesburg. He was a Navy Veteran of the Korean conflict. Services were held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday December 2 at Linwood cemetery, Galesburg with Rev. David Seitz officiating. Military honors were accorded with Harry E. Wiles American Legion Post #381 Abingdon in charge. Hinchliff-Pearson-West Chapel, Abingdon was in charge of the arrangements.

John Michael Ewen Jr

Last rites for John Michael 'Mike' Ewen Jr., 64, Roseville, were held Tuesday, December 1, at 10:00 a.m. in St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Raritan. Rev. Carl LoPresti officiated and interment was in St. Patrick’s cemetery. Mr. Ewen died Friday, November 27, 1998 at 7:40 a.m. in Community Medical Center, Monmouth. Corman Memorial Home, Roseville, was in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be left to LaMoine Christian Nursing Home, Roseville, or to St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. The son of John Sr. and Mary Etta Churchman Ewen, he was born June 9, 1934, in Michael. He married Carolyn Oberjohnn, June 19, 1959 in Litchfield, who survives. He also leaves his mother in Brighton; a son Chuck Ewen in Macomb; three daughters, Mrs. Terry (Brenda) Cummings of Monticello, Mrs. Don (Linda) Farr of Roseville and Mrs. Kent (Ellen) Poulter in Good Hope; a sister, Mrs. Robert (Rosemary) Schoeberle of Brighton; and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father. Mr. Ewen served with the US Air Force from 1956 to 1960. He farmed for 32 years in Warren County, was a member of the Warren and Henderson Counties Farm Bureaus and attended St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Raritan.

James W. Helton

James W. Helton, 67, San Antonio, Texas, formerly of Roseville, Illinois, died Friday, November 6, 1998 at home. He was born April 19, 1931, the son of Walter and Louise Helton. He married Helen Ivanic in Wisconsin. Surviving are his wife; two sons, Mark Helton and John Helton, both in Texas; four daughters, Teresa Hawkins, Alba, Becky Tomaselli, in Florida, and Jacqueline Gross and Jennifer VanZandt, both of Texas; one brother, Jon Helton in California, and five sisters, Kay Blue, Monmouth, Illinois, Margaret Curtis and Marsha Riley, both of Galesburg, Illinois, Jean Kindhart, Roseville, and Carol Norris, Industry, Illinois. He was graduated from Roseville High School, and was a member of the Boy Scouts. He was retired from the Air Force. A graveside service and military honors were held November 12 in Fort Sam Houston National cemetery, Texas.
